Projections and Rate My Team Are Live

After yesterday’s launch of the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, our Projections and Rate My Team tool have both been updated with initial numbers in our Members Area and are now live. Our members can now get access to these areas via the menu bar and start putting both to use in their pre-season selections.

We will be tweaking this numbers on a daily basis as new players enter the game and as the pre-season reveals more on likely starting lineups and roles.

Once again this term, the projections are based on the Rate My Team statistical model, developed by “Professor” Chris Atkinson.

Below you’ll find an FAQ on our Projections and Rate My Team, plus links to movies with Chris that talk you through the functionality of Rate My Team and even the methods that go into building and maintaining it week on week.

Access to these tools requires Membership and these are available for the pre-season price of £12.50 (RRP £15.00). Registered users can upgrade their accounts via this link, while new users can register as members here.

View this page for full details on all our benefits for Members.

How do I use the Projections?
Crucially, these tables can be used as another opinion-former when comparing players. Every player is rated for goals, assists, clean sheets etc based on values created by the “Rate My Team” statistical model – the values returned for each player are the expected values in accordance with its calculations.

A good way of thinking about them is to consider them average values for each player. If the season was played out 500 times, the values you’ll find in these projection tables are the average that the model would expect the player to score.

One of the most useful aspects of the Projections is the value column. You can sort by this to find the best value (Points Per FPL Million) delivered by players in each position.

With tables for the season and the opening six Gameweeks, you can get a view on long-term and short-term returns and value.

What are these values based on?
The Rate My Team statistical model is a complex beast – it uses historical data stretching back a number of seasons and, of course, specific player and team data. When generating the player values, the model looks at the specific fixture in each Gameweek, assessing the strength of both teams before calculating the likely team goals scored and how these goals will translate to specific player stats. The probability of a player taking part in the match is also a key ingredient – factors such as rotation, injuries and suspensions are taken into account.

When will these Projections be updated?
It’s likely that we’ll update the projections almost every day up until the season kick-off. As we get more data on likely first choice lineups and as the transfer market moves to cast doubt over starters, we will adapt and tweak the model accordingly. A new player, particularly if we anticipate they will threaten a starting role, can have a major impact on the projections and Rate My Team, influencing the projected output of his new team-mates.

The projections will also be updated throughout the season, providing a week by week view of what the model expects each player to score for the remaining Gameweeks to help guide your selections and transfers. We normally update on both Tuesday and Friday in order to build the latest team news into the numbers.

What is Rate My Team?
Rate My team is a statistical model built specifically to assess every player in the Premier League and return their expected values for Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points in a given Gameweek. The system is a complex and thorough one which, of course, plots the probabilities of a player’s time on the pitch, their expected number of goals, assists, bonus points, yellow and red cards, clean sheets, own goals, goals conceded and saves. The strength of the opponent they are facing in a given Gameweek is also crucial; so every team has an attacking, defensive rating, every player a probability of playing a given match with injuries, suspensions and international absence factored in.

How Can It Help Me?
If you’re a member you can use the Rate My Team tool in a number of ways. Firstly, you can use it as a projections tool to predict what specific players will score, on average, over the next X number of Gameweeks. As you’ll see in the movie below, you have a players table that can be filtered by position or FPL cost and which can be extended to show any number of Gameweeks. You can also sort on “Value” to find those players projected to offer the best points per million return.

However, this is just one part of the functionality. Once the season starts, Rate My Team can also analyse your existing FPL lineup, recommend captains, vice captains, your bench and order of substitutes and allow you to model your future transfers. In the second “My Team” movie below, you can preview this functionality in full.

Rather than post your team in the comments on the main site, our members can now enter their FPL code in Rate My Team and it will immediately offer you an appraisal of your squad. Using Rate my Team you can transfer players in and out of your squad and get an immediate appraisal of the impact of that transfer.

    Best option for mid-priced forward?
    Benteke, Giroud, Kane or Lukaku

Currently on Giroud just because I can't seem to fit in an Arsenal mid.

Going without hazard allows me to build a nice balanced team with Aguero.

    Schmeichel- hamer
    Koscielny - azpilicueta - rose - O'shea- targett
Walcott - mata - Chadli- puncheon - wanyama
    Aguero - Costa - sakho

Vergini is gooing, Advocaat announced it yesterday

“It’s a new season and I have to be straight and honest with people,” said Advocaat, "I don’t want to go on with him, with all respect. I’m sorry for Santi, but he has to go and find another club. It was the same with the right-back [Anthony Reveillere, who was told at the end of the season he would be released].Probably if other players realise if I buy someone for a certain position, they will ask if they can go.
            That’s the way it goes.”

reading that it sounds like he'll start the season but be replaced if Advocaat isn't happy

I'm happy to risk it for now. O'Shea is too dullard for my tastes so it's Matthews v Coates

Be careful as it looks like we'll be signing Nicolas Lombaerts for a fee of around £5m-£7m. He'll be straight in alongside O'Shea if that happens.

So Darmian looks to be closing in on his transfer to United...is it just me or have United just wasted more money. Looking at this clip http://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/video-manchester-united-target-darmian-9605353 he is predominantly played, and seems to favour left back annnnd loves to venture forward. ...ehh isn't that Shaw's job? He's been brought in as a right back but I'm not convinced. ...flop iny book...but I guess I've seen stranger things like Smalling costing 6m

Torino played 3-5-2 and Darmian was employed on both flanks, more often on left. That was last season. In his whole career, he's mostly played RB. End of.

This. Even in this clip there are games he is playing on the right as well. Essentially United bought a defender who is known to be able to slot into any of the defensive positions, and this clip reinforces that.

According to whoscored, he started on the left 15 times, and on the right 19 times, last season.

He is a right sided player, predominantly.

Importantly, there's no need to look at only the last season. And in any event, he's primarily a RB, and precisely a very much a defender, not a midfielder despite having played as a wide midfielder in 3-5-2. And that 3-5-2 often easily is 5-3-2.

    Rate this team!

    Schmeichel (Hennessey)
    Elphick Morgan Williams (O'Shea Baker)
    Hazard Silva Cazorla Ritchie (Wanyama)
    Rooney Kane Deeney

    ITB 3m

Unsure who will play regularly, Cedric 5.0 or Martina 4.5. I would like to swap out Rooney->Costa/Kun (after GW4) and Kane->Kun/Costa (if Kane is a disappointment).

Would Charlie Adam be nailed on as well?

8/10 of people drafting their teams have a lot of the same players. Cedric, Mings, Ramsey, Ki, Rooney, Costa, Henderson, Matthews, Azpi, Hazard or Cabaye for example. It's giving me a headache because I want the same players, but if they fail, I will fail along everyone else which is a missed opportunity. If I decided to be different and that fails then I'll be left behind.

Bayern Munich CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has rubbished claims of a Manchester United swap deal involving Bastian Schweinsteiger and Angel Di Maria.

Speaking to the media at Bayern's Allianz Arena, the German said: "For once I can completely deny that. It's never been discussed and was never part of anyone's thinking, neither here in Munich nor in Manchester.

"I read this stuff in the evening before going to bed and I always drop off to sleep feeling jolly and grinning.
"You shouldn't believe there's much truth in every rumor, especially if it's come from England. The proportion of untruth in the stories I'm reading at the moment is 99 percent."

Likes to go forward, seasoned international and he often ends up taking a few corners and free kicks. Even without FK's and corners he is the way to go if one wants a Watford defender I feel.

No argument there from me, allthough I said if one wants a Watford defender and I still do due to economic reasons

    Slowly warming up to this:

    Schmeichel
    Morgan, Azpi, Cedric
    Fab, Walcott, Yaya, Ritchie
    Sakho, Roonpig, Costa
    (Flappy, Tomkins/Reid, O'Shea/Matthews)

With £0.5m in the bank it allows me to do Yaya + Rooney > Aguero + Cabaye easily

    What do you guys think?
