The Numbers Game – 2014/15 Review – Southampton

The sceptics were circling ahead of Ronald Koeman’s first year in charge of Southampton after former manager Mauricio Pochettino was followed through the exit door by a number of first-team regulars. The Dutchman proved them wrong, though, and after dipping into the transfer market to acquire the likes of Sadio Mane, Graziano Pelle, Dusan Tadic and Ryan Bertrand, he guided the Saints to a seventh-place finish – one spot higher than they’d managed under the Argentine in 2013/14.

In this members article, we cast an eye back over Koeman’s first campaign at St Mary’s, analysing the chief goal threats and creators and comparing their overall displays to Pochettino’s only full year at the helm.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Watford winning 1-0 so far on the first friendly of their German tour..

and it's that man Ighalo again! That's 4 in 2 1./2 pre-season matches, to follow his 20 Championship goals last season..

    Available for 5.0!

20 goals in nearly half the minuted Deeney played last season... I'm tempted

Ighalo's played Serie A and La Ligua..so he'll complete the set of the 3 European top leagues next season!

After a slow start, he started securing in October and never looked back! 20 Championship goals in around 30 starts, and that playing 'second fiddle' to Deeney.

Been tinkering around a lot today and have come up with this. My only concern is no hazard, but here it is:

    Schmeichel - Hamer

    Koscienly - Azpillicueta - Rose - O'Shea - 4.0
(O'Shea used mainly as a backup sub player)

    Walcott - Mata - Chadli - Atsu - Abdi
(Atsu and Abdi have perfect Home/Away rotation - if one flops then the other can step up)

    Aguero - Costa - Sakho

Midfield a little on the weak side? Too much investment in the forwards?

not too keen on a spurs defender and it will be interesting to see if chadli can cement his place in the first team, which wasnt the case towards the end of last season

Reasoning being firstly that planning wildcard use following closure of the two transfer windows is simply logical
But if I don't want to use my wild card then means that I will be doing well and therefore have a spare transfer to get Vorm out

What's the usual time out for a broken wrist anyway? Sounds quite serous for a goalie...

So who actually expects Hennessey to oust Foster / Myhill if he goes the WBA?

I'll likely have him in my team because I want a £4.0m GK and he has the most (if still small) chance of gametime, but I can't see him being a number 1.

    Wishful thinking IMO.

Money? False assurances? Begovic was told he had a chance to oust Courtois as no.1 at Chelsea and he believed it.

What one says to the press and what one genuinely believes are entirely different things. And the fact he's signed for Pulis once implies that there's a relationship/trust there.

            • 9 Years
            8 years, 11 months ago

But he never played regularly for Pulis at Palace.
Why are Ospina and Szczesny happy to stay at Arsenal when they know they won't be number 1?
I reckon he's just gonna be 2nd or 3rd choice if he goes. Might get some gametime over Myhill but when Foster is back that'll be it. Hennessey is not a great GK.

Well they do while Foster is out. Myhill starting, Hennessey on the bench for cover incase he too gets injured in a game.

Of course not, but it just shows how a quickly-built reputation can diminish and a career can go down the drain after 1 or 2 good seasons. One sunny day doth not a summer make...

He had quite a good reputation before and was a developing talent. Michu had struggled in Spain's second tier and was much more of a later bloomer, no?

What's the feeling on the Southampton Defence, with Clyne, Toby and Schneiderlin no longer at the club and Forster and Bertrand injured, are they still likely to be tight at the back ?.

      • 10 Years

People are making a very big deal out of this Bertrand injury which may only rule him out of 2 weeks.

Just remember last year's reconstruction before writing us off.

          Considered Lescott?

Stekelenburg is 100% nailed on. Brought in on loan, purely to cover Forster's injury. I expect a new CB. Clasie is signing imminently.

Oh dear, someone hasn't kept up have they?

Clasie will sign imminently. Highly rated, linked with United, nearly moved to Porto last summer, turned down Schalke this summer. He is having a medical today/early tomorrow. Deal done. He'll slot into your Davis slot.

Gardos will definitely not fit in there. IF we weren't signing a CB, Yoshida would. No improvement? Well that's fine because both our manager and our director of football have confirmed that a new CB will be brought in. Don't assume that they let Toby go and sit there and do nothing about it. Last summer should have taught you something.

Targett will be there very temporarily. So I don't think that's a fair judgement.

Why make a judgement on a work that you know to be incomplete before a deadline?

I'm not even particularly recommending us. There are definitely risks and it might not work. I just think it's questionable to write us off without a second thought.

    Score update...Watford now 3-0 up.

2 from Ighalo and 1 from Anya.

Anya didn't score a league goal all last season, and his starting position could be under threat from potential new signing Steven Berghuis.

Just for the record, Capoue assisted Ighalo's second goal...
