Fantasy Premier League – Player List Analysis – Mid-Price Forwards

We roll out the penultimate article in our assessment of this year’s Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Player List this evening, After casting an eye over the Goalkeepers, Budget Defenders, Mid-Price Defenders, Premium Defenders, Budget Midfielders, Mid-Price Midfielders, Premium Midfielders and
Budget Forwards, we analyse the available options in the mid-price bracket up front.

Arsenal’s Danny Welbeck carries a 7.5 price tag after scoring just four times in 25 appearances in his debut season at the Emirates. With Olivier Giroud and Theo Walcott surely ahead of him in the pecking order for the lone striker role, in addition to fierce competition for the attacking midfield slots, the England international may not see enough playing time to be regarded as a genuine Fantasy prospect. Welbeck is also a slight doubt for the start of the new season with a knee injury that has taken longer to heal than expected.

Chelsea pair Loic Remy and Radamel Falcao have both been priced at 7.5, though their pitch time is likely to be determined by Diego Costa’s ability to remain free from injury and suspension. Bearing in mind that Costa was restricted to just 24 starts last term, there’s certainly a chance that at least one of the pair will benefit at some point, though for now, neither looks worth gambling over, given how precious our three striker slots are. Remy could be worth considering if a mooted move to Palace or West Ham transpires, though.

Despite what was a pretty disappointing campaign last year, Romelu Lukaku appears to be one of the stronger options in the mid-price bracket. The Belgian international comes in at 8.0 this season and may benefit from only having the Premier League to focus on, having played a major role in Everton’s Europa League campaign last term. His goal conversion rate of 9.5% is a concern, however, while the Toffees tough opening schedule mean it’s only when the fixtures ease from Gameweek 11 that he may begin to feature on our radars. Nonetheless, Lukaku looks a secure option – he started 32 times last term, a tally bettered by only four other forwards, whilst he’s now scored at least ten times in all three of his seasons in the top-flight.

Over on the red half of Merseyside, summer signing Danny Ings and Mario Balotelli have been valued at 7.5 and 7.0 respectively. With Daniel Sturridge ruled out for the opening part of the season, it remains to be seen who Brendan Rodgers will opt for up front, though, after the Reds triggered Christian Benteke’s release clause at Villa. Owned by over 14% of FPL managers, Ings was fielded on the right of a front three in Liverpool’s previous friendly but with Rodgers full of options in the final third, he looks far from certain to lead the line in the season ahead. After a disappointing first year at Anfield, Balotelli looks set for the exit door if the Reds can find a buyer.

Another two forwards that could be set to leave the Premier League are Manchester City duo Edin Dzeko (7.5) and Stevan Jovetic (7.0). The Bosnian striker has been linked with a move to Roma, while former Fiorentina man Jovetic could also be set for a return to Serie A. Both look to be behind Sergio Aguero and Wilfried Bony in the pecking order, while latest addition Raheem Sterling can also play in various roles across the forward line. Even if Dzeko or Jovetic don’t depart this summer, it is very unlikely either will be viable Fantasy options in the forthcoming campaign.

In just 22 appearances last season, Papiss Cisse (6.5) managed to score 11 times and ended the campaign with a goal conversation rate of 24.4%, second only to Diego Costa’s 26.3%. New boss Steve McClaren utilised a 4-3-3 at Derby last year and has rolled out a 4-2-3-1 system in both matches in charges so far, suggesting a lone striker formation will be favoured. Bearing in mind that the Magpies have been heavily linked with moves for Aleksandar Mitrovic and Charlie Austin, there are still question marks over whether the injury-prone Cisse can remain at the top of the pecking order.

Southampton’s Graziano Pelle and Jay Rodriguez are valued at 8.0 and 7.0 respectively this year and both could provide decent options over the course of the season. Despite a disappointing second half of the 2014/15 campaign, which saw him go on a 14-match scoreless run, Pelle started 37 times last term, more than any other forward, and his physical attributes as a target man should ensure he remains Ronald Koeman’s preferred choice as the lone striker. The more versatile Rodriguez still offers an option on the flanks and, after finally recovering from a year-long knee injury, will be hoping to rediscover the form that saw him net 15 times during 2013/14. Certainly, the Saints’ opening schedule, which pits them against just three of last term’s top three in the first 13 Gameweeks, could barely be kinder and both forwards are already off the mark – Rodriguez has notched twice, whilst Pelle netted in a friendly win over Groningen earlier today.

Coming in at 6.5, fellow Senegal international Mame Biram Diouf is the only Stoke forward in the mid-price category. After scoring 12 goals in the previous campaign, the former United man could be decent value if he can stave off the challenge of new signing Joselu for a starting berth as the lone striker in Mark Hughes’s 4-2-3-1. In terms of goal conversion, Diouf’s 21.4% was fourth among all forwards last year, though his versatility can go against him, with the Potters boss handing him a right flank berth on a number of occasions.

Following Wilfried Bony’s January move to City, it took Bafetimbi Gomis some time to find his best form at Swansea. The France international seemed to improve week-by-week throughout the second half of last season, though, and scored six of his seven goals in his final ten appearances. Now the clear first-choice at the Liberty, with summer signing Eder seemingly offering back-up, Gomis should thrive with the likes of Andre Ayew and Gylfi Sigurdsson providing support from midfield. Available at 7.0, the former Lyon forward – who notched against the likes of Arsenal and City last season – looks one of the more appealing and potentially most consistent options in the mid-price roster. He’s also off the mark this summer, finding the net in a 2-1 win over 1860 Munich earlier tonight.

Saido Berahino was one of last season’s success stories in the budget bracket. After scoring 14 goals, the England U21 has been handed a price hike this time around, though still sets us back a respectable 6.5. The Baggies didn’t create an awful lot of chances last season, ranking 19th out of all 20 Premier League sides for attempts on goal, with more of our Fantasy focus on their reliable defence under Tony Pulis. Nonetheless, a goal conversion rate of 16.3% illustrates how clinical the youngster is in front of goal, though, and after some difficult opening fixtures, spot-kick taker Berahino could provide a viable option as a third forward. The Baggies striker netted in his first appearance of the summer in a friendly win over Charleston Battery earlier this morning.

One of the other stand-out names in this price range is West Ham’s Diafra Sakho, who comes in at 6.5. In an injury-hit campaign that restricted him to 23 appearances, Sakho still netted every 184.1 minutes – that’s sandwiched between Charlie Austin (178.9) and Christian Benteke (192.8), for example. Providing he can steer clear of the treatment room, he should benefit from an attack-minded approach under Slaven Bilic and has four very favourable home matches (LEI, BOU, NEW, NOR) in the first seven Gameweeks. With Andy Carroll (6.5) now expected to be out until mid-October due to an ongoing knee injury, Sakho’s eye for goal could be key to ensuring Bilic’s tenure gets off to a profitable start.

Adrian -> 4.5 to rotate with Schmeichel. Ruddy, Butland etc, look good.

Drop Alderweild to a 4.0m unless you plan to play more than 3 at the back

Ighalo is likely to play wide, Wilson or Deeney for .5 more should yield more points.

Right fellas. Tear this one. And feel free to give it a Doos rating. Not posted a RMT for a week now

    Butland Ruddy
    Kos Mings Bassong Morgan Collocini
    Hazard Walcott Mata B.Johnson D.Fletcher
    Costa Rooney Sakho

Once Aguero returns Mata will downgrade and Costa/Rooney become Aguero.
    Alternatively Mata/Johnson can be Chadli/Henderson

I have the same front3. The defence is probably a bit light. Midfield could work but if you downgrade Mata like you have suggested the midfield begins to look light also

One of my earlier drafts had Aguero and Lukaku which allows funds to beef up mid and defence but Rooney's getting a lot of love on here plus it's the before an international tournament. He always does well in them

Is Hazard AND Costa the best way to go? Does swallow a lot of funds. Where my frontline is the same as yours my downgrade of Haz to Fab/other really balances my team from my view. Hazards ownership already is a scare though if he goes wild from the start you will be behind a few points. I think Rooney as the lone striker is a must can see him having a great season.

Fair enough. I would maybe suggest downgrading Walcott until we get news he will start? Upgrade Johnson to Cabaye/Puncheon or Chadli/Hendo like you have suggested. Looks balanced then. Best of luck

Nice, but some would say Henderson>Milner but who knows. I am a ManU fan but somehow I dont see Rooney get enough points for his price.

Most would be only using Rooney for the first few games before Aguero rocks up (place holder)

I prefer Milner, much more direct and a bigger goal threat imo but its close, and Rooney is a placeholder, not much choice out there, Kun eased back in and dont want Costa.

Dear All who post RMTers and questions of FFS,
If someone disagrees with something you say and give you some criticism, do not pounce on them and if that's what the commenter on your post truly believe will better your team then while you don't have to be grateful, at least don't be hostile because you asked for their opinion in the first place. And if the person has a different style you don't necessarily agree with in their suggestion for you, don't do it. As long as you can back up your decisions then they are viable ones

Darmian will need time to adjust , and i think Shaw is class player but he suffered injuries last year so this season will be eventually his first .
Except Cech & kos all defenders can be rotated : Bellerin / Debuchy / Chambers for RB mert / gabriel / chambers CB and Monreal/gibbs for LB
so it comes to Mert vs Monreal for me

Exactly, there's no need for that at all. There will always be a difference of opinion amongst players, if there wasn't...we'd all have the same teams heading into GW1. Theres a reason too why people will look to punts and differential late in the season

It's all about the player tbh. I don't have any rule set for it. Just pick the best attacking full-backs and centre backs who are good for a goal or two from set pieces and great for bonus points.

Everyone is presuming its Agueros god given right to be top scorer again. Be interesting if he does start and blanks before City play Watford and Costa and Rooney for example start the season on fire. What happens then

I wouldn't be so mad if that happened. It would be a simple swap to one of the other guys, but if it's the other way round i.e. Augero fires early, you start to see hits being taken to get him in.

The dilemma though is would you drop one of Rooney Costa for Aguero before the Watford game of they are on fire or be brave enough to dump Aguero before the Watford game for one of Costa/Rooney of you start with him

I am confident in Aguero, but I see your point. There is risk either way. I haven't sacrificed too much in terms of balance/strength in other lines by having him, so I think I'll keep him in unless we hear anything.

fair nuff. can see why people have in their team.

my problem is I tried putting him in and it meant too much sacrifice in other areas, would rather go into the new season with a bit more balance and then maybe play WC early if i need to reassess

Well said. I am glad I haven't really dabbled too much into the no-Aguero scenario, because I would probably be in your boat if I'd seen the benefits not having him has for the rest of the side!

13m is a lot of money though, even for Aguero until we see him 100% fit and on form. I am happy to go without for 3 games in order to give my team a more rounded shape. The points I may miss from him will be made up by the rest of my squad.

Very hard to fit Aguero and Haz in and have balance in your squad.

Aguero Rooney Deeney. Lots of Deeney-doubters out there, but I'm content with him there at the moment. Adebayor could be a great 3rd striker if he moves to Villa.

Nice! I had Aguero, Kane, Sakho, but concluded that Rooney is nearly a must have so I'm willing to sacrifice the latter.

The only thing that worries me about aguero is that he's injury prone, he'll definitely score goals.

I don't see Rooney as the main striker on the team. Also, Costa only managed 150 points last year despite scoring 20 goals and i feel like that's because players around him are the ones winning the bonus points. Hazard won 42 bonus points last year compared to Costa's 18.

            Aguero's the man

for now Rooney is the main striker as they don't really have anyone else. That may change.

Costa had a very very good start last season, true he is not a bonus magnet.

I am going with Kane and Rooney over Aguero and a 7/8 mil second striker.

At 9.5 he might be a bit much for me in a Tottenham side that really could be average. They have a decent start mind and that worries me.

Clearly the 2nd. Wanyama's just a regular 2-pointer whereas the budget strikers will get some goals. I can't see Kane being as prolific this year whereas Ozil has pedigree.

        Hi troops

it looks like I’m nearly there:

        A)
        Schmeichel (Hamer)
        Ivan, Kos, Morgan (O’Shea/Ward
        Haz, Wally, Ritchie, Mane (Wanyama)
        Aguero, Sakho, Deeney
        1.0m ITB

        B)
        Schmeichel (Hamer)
        Azpi, Clyne, Morgan (O’Shea/Ward
        Haz, Wally, Ritchie, Silva (Wanyama)
        Aguero, Sakho, Deeney
        0.5m ITB

        C)
        Schmeichel (Hamer)
        Azpi, Clyne, Morgan (O’Shea/Ward
        Haz, Wally, Ritchie,Hendo (Wanyama)
        Aguero, Kane, Deeney
        0.5m ITB

        *Costa/Rooney until Aguero fit then
Any feedback on A), B) or C)? For me it gets down to a modest front line with a strong back or a strong front with a modest back. I think the balance for each team is good but it all gets down to Kane – will he continue his previous form?

        Thanks troops.

Just before I study those, I will say always go for a strong middle or front over strong back. The big points are scored away from the defence, not to mention captains.

I agree with strong middle and attack over back but the first few weeks no one knows who will be firing straight away. So starting with a strong back four is more likely to deliver early points before you swap into strong attack.

I agree with the premise, but some players have more of a guarantee than others. If Aguero is declared fit for GW2, WCs will be thrown down to get him. Extreme example, but there are very reliable picks in the middle and upfront.

I hate the double keeper thing regardless of the pair. 19 road games in goal? The pts from saves don't balance CS's.

          Hamer> Fab rotates -1.0
          Morgan rotates with Williams -.5
          Aguero> Costa (until...) +2.0
upgrade Wanayama> Clasie (Southhampton seems to have made this upgrade)
          IMO GL

Sounds to me like he's probably done a bit of both then!

I suppose if he is that versatile he's a worthwhile 5th mid based on the fact he'll get in the team somewhere, whether it's at a disappointing LB or optimism-inducing AMC.

Hey guys I was hoping for a little help on this team I made.

        de gea-(adrian)
        ivanovic-cedric-williams-(alderweireld-o'shea)
        hazard-walcott-henderson-depay (barry)
        rooney-cissé-deeney

I think I took a few risks especially with my strikers but I'm not sure if that's the right thing to do. Also I want to make sure my defense is solid. Thanks!!!

Cisse is not an assured starter with the signing of Mitrovic.

You don;t need a 5.0m backup GK with DeGea in your team, go for DeGea and a 4.0.

Swap Alderweireld to a 4.0 or 4.5m in defender.

Gks are too much! How about a cheap rotation eg. Butland and Ruddy!
Sending 5.0 on a sub defender is not on
Making these changes could help bolster the attacks and don't like Barry

I'd probably avoid Cisse because Newcastle's fixtures are awful. Rooney's aren't great either but I don't think it matters so much in his case. I'd drop Depay & De Gea though - the triple-up seems unnecessary. Might need some City cover?

I was out on the balcony last night and I was smoking a few with a couple of cold ones. The bathroom rug was airing near me.
This morning my rather large female flat mate said she could smell some cigarette smoke when she went to shower and kneeled down and smelt the rug. Indeed she could smell fag smoke.
I asked if she often sniffed rugs and she stormed off and slammed the door, I haven't seen her since.

Was weighing on this with someone earlier. They have a horrific set of fixtures from a clean sheet perspective but for their attackers it is actually quite strong. Bolasie has been one of 4 names on my team who has not changed over the tinkers from my first draft.

I am indeed. But don't hold it against me.

It simply adds to the overall attacking quality of the team. He's world class and our attack will be that much more potent because of his addition. I think there will be a time this season where many will be considering a double up on Palace attack.

I believe it was me who used the word "horrific". This is my reasoning -

I was at the time talking about Speroni, so it was in reference to their defensive prospects, which under Pardew have taken a hit anyway. I don't see more than one clean sheet in the opening six.
Whilst I agree Norwich and Villa are not horrific, the other four of their opening 6 are - ARS, che, CITY, spurs - I don't think anyone has a tougher start.

Agreed..the first eight as a bock aren't good, but the opening fixtures are fine...although I'm not sure anybody is that keen on visiting Palace tbh.

If our difference is based off of the definition of the word "opening" then fair enough. I usually plan 6 or so ahead. Their first 3 are not horrific, I agree. Their first 6 are not nice.

Well lets look at those fixtures...nor (newly promoted) ARS (tough opponents but so are Palace for their first home game) VILLA (just rubbish) che (fair enough bad fixture) CITY (poor defence which is why nobody will pick them) spurs (one of the worst defences in the league last season).

So yes...I agree..I only fancy Palace to blank in maybe two of those at worst.
