The Numbers Game – 2014/15 Review – Stoke City

Following a successful first season at the Britannia for Mark Hughes, in which he guided Stoke to a ninth-place finish, expectations were high as the Potters headed into the 2014/15 campaign. The former Blackburn boss continued his side’s evolution, bringing in the likes of Bojan Krkic from Barcelona and Victor Moses on a season-long loan from Chelsea, while Phil Bardsley and Mame Biram Diouf added physicality at both ends of the pitch. That balance of style and substance ultimately proved successful, with Stoke finishing in ninth place once again.

In this members article, we will take an in-depth look at Hughes’ second season in charge, analysing the main goal threats and creators and comparing the numbers from the 2013/14 and 2014/15 campaigns under the Welshman.

Could Krkic have a stellar season? Also, predictions for Stoke this year?

shhhh. Also worth noting that Bojan took a while to adapt. He might have had better stats if he stayed injury free and continued his good form

He'll get minutes, of course he will, but nailed on? Definitely not. Walcott has been talking himself up as a striker, and Wenger has done the same in the past. Giroud didn't start every game last season, and that was without a fully fit Walcott. He won't start all games this year.

Not many will start all games this year.. I will get Walcott too so not worried if Giroud misses the odd game. If it looks like Walcott is going to be first choice striker I will ofc change Giroud. We can call him a little punty but I think he will come good.

Anya's appearances will be very limited this year. He's a backup player.

Likely to be first choice creative/attacking midfielders for Watford: Abdi, Jurado and (if he signs, which looks likely) Berghuis.

Jurado is probably the safest pick purely because he has history with QSF, whereas the others do not. Abdi just signed a new 3 year contract so he's tied down, but has had a couple of unlucky seasons from an injury standpoint (non-recurring injuries, a string of bad luck). If he stays injury free he's an excellent play that runs the Watford midfield.

Rest of the team is 4.0s and 4.5s but the main body is:

    Mertesacker
    Hazard, Ozil, Mane, Henderson
    Kane, Benteke, Pelle

3.0m ITB and need to find 0.5 for Kane to Aguero to be open?

    Defensive Midfielders....

I'm sure this has been discussed countless times, but as someone who only got into FF last year, I just wonder. do we think there will ever be a viable way in which Fantasy football can value defensive mids?

for example, players like Matic, one of the most important players in Chelsea's title last year, incredibly influencial, but no returns points wise. I would love to be able to include such important players in my team.

what do you think, could it ever happen? were they ever valuable previously?

No and not unless FPL changes how it distributes points (like ufpl). If points were awarded for interceptions, pass completion and tackles i'd consider him.

Under the old bonus system some were (Barry Ferguson) but adding additional points etc. has been discussed to death, and the consensus seems that it would add too much confusion.

Game would become more boring if they got points outside bonus points. Just need to sort out the BPS system to give them more chance of baps.

It'd involve a fundamental change to the point scoring system and thus make it more complicated, no? Think the simplicity of it is one of the main factors for the FPL towers. Although it would be nice.

I don't think there's a need for that. It's good that you understand that, but I don't see a special points system for such players, they are in every team - Coqlen, Carrick, Song etc.

The only way they could do it without amending the points would be to add another position, so you have a 17 man squad, have to pick two DMs and play one every week. They'll never do it though.

Just wondering, based solely on potential to score points (leaving price out of this equation) for the first 3 weeks, would you pick Costa or Sakho?

    A. Costa - SWA, mci, wba

    B. Sakho - ars, LEI, BOU

I'm tempted to get Sakho over Costa and save the money in the bank instead for Aguero.

Was supposed to keep this one to myself. Under the radar as he is. But I have never been good at keeping secrets.
What's your thoughts on Odemwingie? Classified as a midfielder. Cheap. Former striker who knows how to score goals? Was fairly lively in Stokes last friendly and was one-on-one whit the goalie. And was one of the few who was given the full 90 min.

Walters is more nailed than both of those wide guys. And as I've shown below, Bojan is also a wide option if Adam plays. 🙂

Walters plays from the right. Bojan can operate from the left when Adam plays #10, which is the only position Adam plays in...

          More than you think.

Lol, I didn't say Adam would affect Odemwingie. 😕 I said Bojan is yet another wide option threat when Adam plays, as Adam only plays CAM.

                  No worries.

Basically there's Walters, Arnautovic, Bojan, Odemwingie as it stands competing for the two wide spots. If Charlie Adam doesn't play, then Bojan could play CAM with two of Walters, Arnie, Odem out wide.

Personally I think Walters is pretty nailed as it stands.

If you can find 1.0 somewhere, I'd go with someone like Cabaye/Bolasie and Atsu/Redmond as the last two midfielders. Or take a gamble on Lens or whatever your gut feels.

You have your bases covered there anyways, would never go Courtois/4.0 but I'm an average player at best so what do I know..
