Moving Target

Moving Target – Morgan Schneiderlin

On the same day that Manchester United announced the signing of Bayern Munich midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger, Southampton’s Morgan Schneiderlin was also confirmed as a Red Devil. After completing a deal for the combative Frenchman, Louis van Gaal explained the reasons behind his latest acquisition:

“Morgan is a player from the Premier League so he can cope with the Premier League. Our selection was not in balance and I have already mentioned that I want to make the balance with midfielders, so you could expect that I shall buy two holding midfielders. And Morgan Schneiderlin is the type that I think can play in our system and in our philosophy. Manchester United only buy players who can make a contribution for that. We are not buying just for buying.”

The History

Schneiderlin worked his way up the youth ranks at RC Strasbourg, penning his first professional contract in 2005. The French international managed just five appearances with the Alsace club, before being sold to Southampton in the summer of 2008 following Strasbourg’s relegation to the second tier of French football.

The combative midfielder found himself in and out of the line-up during his debut campaign with the Saints, producing zero attacking returns across 23 starts. In the wake of Southampton’s relegation to League One, he cemented a regular berth in the 2009/10 season, serving up one goal and two assists in 37 appearances.

Following the south coast outfit’s promotion back to the Championship for the 2011/12 campaign, Schneiderlin featured in all but four of their league ties, tallying two goals and three assist in 29 starts. A second-place finish gained the Saints entry into the top flight, where the he continued to flourish; having notched five goals and one assist in 36 outings, Schneiderlin was honoured as the Player’s Player and Fans Player of the Year.

In his previous two campaigns at St Mary’s Stadium, he chalked up six goals and three assists over 59 appearances, with ligament injury and a torn abductor muscle restricting him to 24 starts in the 2014/15 season.

Schneiderlin made his debut for France’s senior squad on June 8, 2014 in an 8-0 friendly win against Jamaica. Less than three weeks later, Les Bleus boss Didier Deschamps started him in a World Cup group clash against Ecuador. In all, Schneiderlin has earned nine caps on the international stage but is yet to score.

The Prospects

Schneiderlin’s arrival at Old Trafford – allied with the recruitment of Bastian Schweinsteiger – has furnished Van Gaal with a wealth of excellent midfield options. Factor in the impressive late-season form of Michael Carrick and Ander Herrera, and there is a myriad of viable set-ups that could exploit the Red Devils’ new-found strength.

With Van Gaal likely to operate with a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3, Schneiderlin can be expected to sit in front of the back-four as Van Gaal attempts to bring a better balance to a side that managed just 11 clean sheets in the previous campaign – just one more than relegated pair Hull and Burnley.

In terms of his individual Fantasy worth, Schneiderlin hardly set the world alight with four goals and one assist in 2,186 minutes for Saints last term, yet his 5.5 price tag in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game could entice some investors who are reluctant to invest heavily in United’s premium options.

Surprisingly, Schneiderlin fashioned shots (one per 76.7 minutes) at a similar rate to Mata (73.2 minutes) last year and has wasted no time in settling into his new surrounds, having scored on his United debut last week. In terms of creativity, it’s clear he is no deep-lying playmaker in the mould of Cesc Fabregas – the Frenchman provided just 20 key passes in 26 appearances in 2014/15, though his minutes per key pass (115) was still far quicker than Carrick’s 191.1, for example.

One look at the stats highlights what the new boy will mainly bring to Old Trafford. In his three seasons in the Premier League, Schneiderlin’s ball-winning ability was fundamental to the Saints’ style of play. In 2012/13, where he missed just two matches, he was first amongst Premier League midfielders for attempted tackles (182), successful tackles (108) and interceptions (139), whilst he sat third for successful tackles in each of the last two campaigns (2013/14, with 87 and 2014/15, with 79) despite his pitch time being somewhat restricted due to injury.

It may well be, then, that his determined displays in the centre of the park will boost United’s defensive prospects more than anything else. Given that no Red Devils defender made 30 or more appearances last year, though, many Fantasy managers will be wary of investing in Van Gaal’s backline from the off unless the remaining pre-season line-ups suggest greater consistency of selection.

In terms of fixtures, the opening schedule could certainly be a lot kinder for Van Gaal’s troops, though. United play six of last year’s top eight in the first ten Gameweeks, suggesting that Schneiderlin’s defensive duties will be key in the first couple of months. The Frenchman may well struggle to earn our attention if, as expected, he’s mainly employed to break up opposition attacks and provide the platform for Mata, Depay and Wayne Rooney to wreak havoc further up the field.

good team i must say but contrary to the popular belief i still wont go with two biggies in defense from the get go (Azpi and Kos) one is enough for me .Also is Saylor nailed on?(at 4.0 if he is ,he will be in my team)

Because I'd prefer finding value in midfield, and using the 2 striker spots for the top point scorers (not necessarily the best value).

Basically, it should have Rooney + Costa/Kun imo

Not convinced about Rooney this season and I'm a fanatic UNTD fan. He didn't play in midfield as much as people think. I just think LVG philosophy doesn't allow Rooney to score highly

Don't think he will over the course of the season...but Bournemouth has some decent home fixtures to begin with and he was central in their attacks last year...I personally expect him to start well and get a rapid price increase.

Keepers - I would go for a more nailed on combo. WHen Foster is back you will have no playing keeper. Defence looks decent but a few too many punts in midfield for my liking - Firmino, Payet & Depay is too much. Have you got a plan for getting Aguero in?

Morgan may not start as he is still playing in the Gold Cup, so go with Huth. Firmino is a gamble, and you are already gambling with Payet and Depay.

Toying with the idea of starting with both Costa and Hazard. Gives the chance to drop Costa for Aguero, without worrying about not having a Chelsea captaincy option...

for me its either Costa or Hazard not getting both.

That's fair enough, and over the season it makes sense to go for one or the other, as their value lies in captaincy potential. This way though, I can watch their early form, then make an informed choice between the two after the first three GWs. Say this is my front seven:

        Hazard - Walcott - X - X
        Costa - Rooney - X

If Costa looks better than Hazard:

        Rooney > Aguero & Hazard > Fabregas/9.0

If Hazard looks better than Costa:

        Costa > Aguero & Rooney > Benteke/8.5 OR Walcott > Chadli/Henderson/7.0

    Schmeichel - Guzan

    Ivan - Mertesacker - O'Shea - Ward - Huth/Prodl*

    Hazard - Ozil - Mane - Ritchie - Ki

    Rooney - Benteke - Sakho

    *Still haven't decided

If there is indication that Aguero will play I plan on doing:

stuck on bottom of the last page so one more try 🙂

    courtois / hennesey

    kosc / huth - williams / o'shea - saylor (i know he's not nailed...)

    haz / silva / milner / chadli / ritchie

    roo / giroud / deeney

thinking SUN's fixtures good enough to keep o'shea in the first 11 even if saylor doesn't play and rotate ritchie and deeney according to fixtures.

instead of rotating deeney and ritchie i would recommend u to use the spare cash to upgrade a defender that can play every week.

look at it this way..if u downgrade ritchie to a 4.5 u save 1.5m which enable you to get clyne instead of saylor. U can then rotate btw 343 and 442.

thanks both, but isn't 343 or 352 probably more profitable than 442? especially with LIV's fixtures...

yup but your defense has an obvious weak link in s.taylor..1 defender injuried and u are left with 3.

clyne is just an example of what u can do with the cash..u can have cedric/alderweireid at 5m for eg..then downgrade ritchie to redmond maybe and u can rotate between 442 343 and 352.

in short i would prefer to fix the defense first. rotating attackers is also not easy as it is harder to predict points.

ON THIS TRANSFER DAY: In 1996, Manchester United signed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, "the baby-faced assassin", from Molde.

The worst thing about that final was that it gave Clive Tyldesley something to bang on about for the rest of his career.

    Another draft...

    Ruddy (Hennessey)
    Ivan | Francis | Toby (O'Shea/Taylor)
Haz | Ozil | Mata | Payet (Fletch)
    Costa | Wilson | JRod

£2.5m ITB. Enough for Costa > Aguero for GW3. I'd like yo opinions on it. (Don't give me that BS that JRod won't start either)

Erwin Koeman's comments following the 10-0 friendly suggested JRod may not be ready for the start of the season.

But didn't start in the game against Feyenoord which is the closest thing we've seen to a first XI.

'Graziano is living for scoring and Jay is coming back and he made three goals as well. Jay maybe needs more time to be fit again. We are very glad he is training and playing games, but he needs time.'

please can someone rate my team out of 10:

    Goalkeeper: Adrian
    Defenders: Koscielny Azpillicueta Jagielka
    Mids: Walcott Payet Hazard Henderson
    Forwards: Benteke Rooney Deeney

    Subs: Schmeichel Bentaleb Angella Bassong

Feel free to say how bad it is and how to make it better. THANK YOU!!

Not too keen on the gks.
      Too much money in d.
Weak midfield after Hendo and Haz.
Deeney needs an upgrade - bit much to start with an unknown upfront.

      3/10.

      0,5/1
      2/3
      2/3
      2,5/3

      Makes 7/10

I think Payet and Bentaleb is a bit weak in midfield

      Good goalies
      A CHS def is needed.
      Only like Haz in midpark.
Deeney - him again. Benteke looks outstanding value at this point.

        0,5/3
        2/3
        2,5/3

        So 5,5/10 for me...

I really think you want to bring a Chelsea defender in

Hows it going lads, here's my ever-changing team, need some advice about where to downgrade so I can fill in the blanks (Kun will be costa for the start of the season then will see whether to ship rooney or costa depending on form)

    X, 4.0
    X, X, Kosc, O'Shea, Morgan
    Haz Chadli Hendo Walcott Wanyama
    Rooney Costa Sahko

Leaves 11.5ITB which is obv. nowhere near enough

          Aguero - injuries
          Costa - injuries
Kane - didn't get going until November
          Rooney - played in CM
          Benteke - played for Lambert/Villa
          Giroud - injuries

All of them have the ability to score a lot higher.
