Moving Target

Moving Target – Morgan Schneiderlin

On the same day that Manchester United announced the signing of Bayern Munich midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger, Southampton’s Morgan Schneiderlin was also confirmed as a Red Devil. After completing a deal for the combative Frenchman, Louis van Gaal explained the reasons behind his latest acquisition:

“Morgan is a player from the Premier League so he can cope with the Premier League. Our selection was not in balance and I have already mentioned that I want to make the balance with midfielders, so you could expect that I shall buy two holding midfielders. And Morgan Schneiderlin is the type that I think can play in our system and in our philosophy. Manchester United only buy players who can make a contribution for that. We are not buying just for buying.”

The History

Schneiderlin worked his way up the youth ranks at RC Strasbourg, penning his first professional contract in 2005. The French international managed just five appearances with the Alsace club, before being sold to Southampton in the summer of 2008 following Strasbourg’s relegation to the second tier of French football.

The combative midfielder found himself in and out of the line-up during his debut campaign with the Saints, producing zero attacking returns across 23 starts. In the wake of Southampton’s relegation to League One, he cemented a regular berth in the 2009/10 season, serving up one goal and two assists in 37 appearances.

Following the south coast outfit’s promotion back to the Championship for the 2011/12 campaign, Schneiderlin featured in all but four of their league ties, tallying two goals and three assist in 29 starts. A second-place finish gained the Saints entry into the top flight, where the he continued to flourish; having notched five goals and one assist in 36 outings, Schneiderlin was honoured as the Player’s Player and Fans Player of the Year.

In his previous two campaigns at St Mary’s Stadium, he chalked up six goals and three assists over 59 appearances, with ligament injury and a torn abductor muscle restricting him to 24 starts in the 2014/15 season.

Schneiderlin made his debut for France’s senior squad on June 8, 2014 in an 8-0 friendly win against Jamaica. Less than three weeks later, Les Bleus boss Didier Deschamps started him in a World Cup group clash against Ecuador. In all, Schneiderlin has earned nine caps on the international stage but is yet to score.

The Prospects

Schneiderlin’s arrival at Old Trafford – allied with the recruitment of Bastian Schweinsteiger – has furnished Van Gaal with a wealth of excellent midfield options. Factor in the impressive late-season form of Michael Carrick and Ander Herrera, and there is a myriad of viable set-ups that could exploit the Red Devils’ new-found strength.

With Van Gaal likely to operate with a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3, Schneiderlin can be expected to sit in front of the back-four as Van Gaal attempts to bring a better balance to a side that managed just 11 clean sheets in the previous campaign – just one more than relegated pair Hull and Burnley.

In terms of his individual Fantasy worth, Schneiderlin hardly set the world alight with four goals and one assist in 2,186 minutes for Saints last term, yet his 5.5 price tag in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game could entice some investors who are reluctant to invest heavily in United’s premium options.

Surprisingly, Schneiderlin fashioned shots (one per 76.7 minutes) at a similar rate to Mata (73.2 minutes) last year and has wasted no time in settling into his new surrounds, having scored on his United debut last week. In terms of creativity, it’s clear he is no deep-lying playmaker in the mould of Cesc Fabregas – the Frenchman provided just 20 key passes in 26 appearances in 2014/15, though his minutes per key pass (115) was still far quicker than Carrick’s 191.1, for example.

One look at the stats highlights what the new boy will mainly bring to Old Trafford. In his three seasons in the Premier League, Schneiderlin’s ball-winning ability was fundamental to the Saints’ style of play. In 2012/13, where he missed just two matches, he was first amongst Premier League midfielders for attempted tackles (182), successful tackles (108) and interceptions (139), whilst he sat third for successful tackles in each of the last two campaigns (2013/14, with 87 and 2014/15, with 79) despite his pitch time being somewhat restricted due to injury.

It may well be, then, that his determined displays in the centre of the park will boost United’s defensive prospects more than anything else. Given that no Red Devils defender made 30 or more appearances last year, though, many Fantasy managers will be wary of investing in Van Gaal’s backline from the off unless the remaining pre-season line-ups suggest greater consistency of selection.

In terms of fixtures, the opening schedule could certainly be a lot kinder for Van Gaal’s troops, though. United play six of last year’s top eight in the first ten Gameweeks, suggesting that Schneiderlin’s defensive duties will be key in the first couple of months. The Frenchman may well struggle to earn our attention if, as expected, he’s mainly employed to break up opposition attacks and provide the platform for Mata, Depay and Wayne Rooney to wreak havoc further up the field.

Mmm I tend to disagree..somthing strange happened last season. He seemed to have a strange injury that no one spoke about. He was on fire till then..after that he got phased back in slowly. He was doing very well and playing till then.. We not bought anyone so he is best option

How much are you guys spending on GKs? I am currently on 9.5m (Fab/Schmeichel) i am reconsidering it now and might go cheap --> 8.5m combo.

What's your best 8.5 combo for short term, let's say 4GW?

You could look at Hennessey who might be a starting GK at West Brom now @4m only. Pair him with another 4.5gk that rotates well.

Arsenal director Lord Harris says manager Arsene Wenger has the financial backing to break the club's transfer record this summer.

"We would back him to break the club's transfer record. If he wanted the man, he could have him," Harris told the Daily Mail.

"Apart from Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, he could have any player."

Pretty bold that. So we know Wenger certainly has the money and freedom to pursue anyone, but do we think he'll do it? After his talk about club philosophy and developing players this week, will he just stick to what he has?

True to an extent, but the last 2 summers he's bought Ozil and Sanchez. Will he have a marquee signing up his sleeve?

          • 11 Years

If we counted a clubs track record of successful buys then Arsenal with Wenger are streets ahead of the rest. Why is chucking money around on flops a better way than how Wenger does it.
He'll only but the right players...he keeps saying it and he does. So yes...one marquee signing would be my guess as well.

          1. Doolittle
            • 11 Years
            8 years, 11 months ago

Agreed, I don't think Arsenal should be chucking money around at all. However, Wenger surely knows that he doesn't quite have a title winning squad, and he does need a DM, even if only as backup to Coquelin. With a striker, he's right not to splash a load of money on someone like Benteke, but if he can get Benzema (big if) then that would be massive.

Yeh, but in both cases it was more a case of players becoming available, than him actually pursuing them.

Sanchez sold for Suarez, Ozil sold for Bale.

I trust his judgement when he wants a player, but I don't trust him to actually go out and get what we need.

In 13/14 Giroud was our only striker, last season we started with one fit centre back in the entire squad, and Arteta has needed to be replaced for 3-4 years, and he just got lucky Coq came in last season.

I'm relatively immune to it now though. 😆

It must be frustrating being an Arsenal fan. With a team like Everton, I know that we have no hope of getting near the top, let alone winning the league, so my expectations are low. With Arsenal, you're always just a couple of players away, it must be infuriating.

I think the most any football fan can ask for is that the club at least tries to be the best it can be, yet we're always a little short.

Maybe they'll prove me wrong though, eh? 😀

          Mid/For atm is:

          Sterling - Milner - Fab - Ozil
          Rooney - Costa - Sakho

But toying with Sterling + Costa to Chadil + Aguero which I probably will end up doing. Going with the Huth/Williams rotation with Jenkinson/Francis along with Azpi. Solid forward line Lucy 🙂

      I like it.

Not sure about Muniesa as he seems permanently injured although if fit could be a good choice.

A lack of Hazard would scare me with his high ownership.

      Who is your 7.0?

      1. Lucy.
        • 10 Years
        8 years, 11 months ago

Yeah, the Stoke defence is a bit tricky.

Undecided on the 7.0. Either Chadli or a Liverpool chap.

Plenty have gone without Hazard. It's a calculated risk.

      Like it a lot!

Norwich/Saints rotate nicely home and away, and Stoke 4.5s are a gamble, so I would go Martin over Muniesa.

And Chadli is still my favoured 7.0 fwiw.

Who would you have over Mata?

The Stoke defence thing is being remedied.

Fabregas has proven his worth in the past as an early season pick. He'll eventually be Hazard further down the line.

Doos makes Jenko his top West Ham defensive option at the moment.

I would put 0.5 and get Sterling...and make that 7m Mid a 6.5m Mid..like Lens who would attack and has decent fixtures..and after gw7 you can get someone like Cabaye or Bolasie...instead of him..

Finally found a team with good spread, balance and range of prices that allows for a fairly easy swapping of players. Removing a Chelsea mid was the key.

The problem is the transfer window closes 4 weeks after FPL starts. Could well force you to make a GK transfer early on.

      Looks good
      I would downgrade cedric to a 4.5 and upgrade baker/mariappa to a 4.5 and rotate the 2
      NEW/SUN maybe
Wilson over deeney because of fixtures

    Any advice?

    Schmiechel / Butland

    Azpi / Mert / Munisea / Ward / Cedric

    Mata / Fab / Ozil / Yaya / Wanyama

    Rooney / Kane / Sakho

Tempted by Wilson > Sakho week 1 and if signs continue to point at Aguero starting week 2 may have to change again

Palace fixtures are poor, try and find an alternative to award.

I'm pretty sure this is the best set up I have found over last few weeks:

    Courtois
    Jagielka Bellerin Alderweireld
    Silva Hazard Cabaye Schneiderlin Walcott
    Costa Benteke

    Thoughts?

Evertons fixtures early on aren't pretty so Jagielka a gamble...

True.. my alternative is dropping Silva & Jagielka and getting Rooney & Janmaat - Better?
