Moving Target

Moving Target – Morgan Schneiderlin

On the same day that Manchester United announced the signing of Bayern Munich midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger, Southampton’s Morgan Schneiderlin was also confirmed as a Red Devil. After completing a deal for the combative Frenchman, Louis van Gaal explained the reasons behind his latest acquisition:

“Morgan is a player from the Premier League so he can cope with the Premier League. Our selection was not in balance and I have already mentioned that I want to make the balance with midfielders, so you could expect that I shall buy two holding midfielders. And Morgan Schneiderlin is the type that I think can play in our system and in our philosophy. Manchester United only buy players who can make a contribution for that. We are not buying just for buying.”

The History

Schneiderlin worked his way up the youth ranks at RC Strasbourg, penning his first professional contract in 2005. The French international managed just five appearances with the Alsace club, before being sold to Southampton in the summer of 2008 following Strasbourg’s relegation to the second tier of French football.

The combative midfielder found himself in and out of the line-up during his debut campaign with the Saints, producing zero attacking returns across 23 starts. In the wake of Southampton’s relegation to League One, he cemented a regular berth in the 2009/10 season, serving up one goal and two assists in 37 appearances.

Following the south coast outfit’s promotion back to the Championship for the 2011/12 campaign, Schneiderlin featured in all but four of their league ties, tallying two goals and three assist in 29 starts. A second-place finish gained the Saints entry into the top flight, where the he continued to flourish; having notched five goals and one assist in 36 outings, Schneiderlin was honoured as the Player’s Player and Fans Player of the Year.

In his previous two campaigns at St Mary’s Stadium, he chalked up six goals and three assists over 59 appearances, with ligament injury and a torn abductor muscle restricting him to 24 starts in the 2014/15 season.

Schneiderlin made his debut for France’s senior squad on June 8, 2014 in an 8-0 friendly win against Jamaica. Less than three weeks later, Les Bleus boss Didier Deschamps started him in a World Cup group clash against Ecuador. In all, Schneiderlin has earned nine caps on the international stage but is yet to score.

The Prospects

Schneiderlin’s arrival at Old Trafford – allied with the recruitment of Bastian Schweinsteiger – has furnished Van Gaal with a wealth of excellent midfield options. Factor in the impressive late-season form of Michael Carrick and Ander Herrera, and there is a myriad of viable set-ups that could exploit the Red Devils’ new-found strength.

With Van Gaal likely to operate with a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3, Schneiderlin can be expected to sit in front of the back-four as Van Gaal attempts to bring a better balance to a side that managed just 11 clean sheets in the previous campaign – just one more than relegated pair Hull and Burnley.

In terms of his individual Fantasy worth, Schneiderlin hardly set the world alight with four goals and one assist in 2,186 minutes for Saints last term, yet his 5.5 price tag in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game could entice some investors who are reluctant to invest heavily in United’s premium options.

Surprisingly, Schneiderlin fashioned shots (one per 76.7 minutes) at a similar rate to Mata (73.2 minutes) last year and has wasted no time in settling into his new surrounds, having scored on his United debut last week. In terms of creativity, it’s clear he is no deep-lying playmaker in the mould of Cesc Fabregas – the Frenchman provided just 20 key passes in 26 appearances in 2014/15, though his minutes per key pass (115) was still far quicker than Carrick’s 191.1, for example.

One look at the stats highlights what the new boy will mainly bring to Old Trafford. In his three seasons in the Premier League, Schneiderlin’s ball-winning ability was fundamental to the Saints’ style of play. In 2012/13, where he missed just two matches, he was first amongst Premier League midfielders for attempted tackles (182), successful tackles (108) and interceptions (139), whilst he sat third for successful tackles in each of the last two campaigns (2013/14, with 87 and 2014/15, with 79) despite his pitch time being somewhat restricted due to injury.

It may well be, then, that his determined displays in the centre of the park will boost United’s defensive prospects more than anything else. Given that no Red Devils defender made 30 or more appearances last year, though, many Fantasy managers will be wary of investing in Van Gaal’s backline from the off unless the remaining pre-season line-ups suggest greater consistency of selection.

In terms of fixtures, the opening schedule could certainly be a lot kinder for Van Gaal’s troops, though. United play six of last year’s top eight in the first ten Gameweeks, suggesting that Schneiderlin’s defensive duties will be key in the first couple of months. The Frenchman may well struggle to earn our attention if, as expected, he’s mainly employed to break up opposition attacks and provide the platform for Mata, Depay and Wayne Rooney to wreak havoc further up the field.

If Chelsea were playing Man City in GW1 would you still be picking Ivan/Azpi Hazard/Fab Costa or indeed 3 Chelsea?

RMT v 3.0 and last before final selections

    Schmeichel / Speroni
    Ivan/Kosc/Clyne (Prodl/Mings)
    Haz/Sterling/Chadli/Ritchie (Anya)
    Rooney/Benteke/Sakho

Considering downgraded Haz>Fab for Rooney>Kun or Ritchie>Arsenal mid, but not sure

    Thoughts appreciated. Cheers!

I would keep Hazard. Hurts too much if he goes well with his ownership. The rest looks solid although a little more invested in the defence than is my personal preference.

He looks like a clinical goal scorer to me while Sterling is clinical at duffing chances. I think Sterling will improve from last season but I think Depay has a higher ceiling for this year and he is a goal scoring mid of whom are FPL gold type players.

I think it's worth going that route with a 100m budget and reacting accordingly if it goes the other way when our team values improve and getting Silva in would be easier to absorb, if that makes sense.

Cheap premium goalies swinging me towards it, though Hart is also very much on the cards as the most nailed and cheapest City option.

I'd rather go Hart and diversify early doors. That said, the shift in BPS makes me feel like rotating cheapies who will make saves is better than they ever have been for FPL.

ehh maybe, Panti/Krul is the one for me if I go that route, but I'm still a CS man at heart.

All this said, If Hennessey makes his move to WBA, I'll just go for two 4.0 keepers and run with it.

    Hazard Chadli Milner Bolasie/cabaye 4.5

Fair call. I really like ramsey but like the 5.5 strikers i want to see who the best target is over the first couple of weeks. The idea of 'cover' doesn't seem like a good option when it comes to Arsenal.

Different way of looking at things - to maximize Team Value early season. I'd leave out pricey point scorers and instead emphasise bandwagon potential until my GW 7-10 WILDCARD when the focus changes to points maximisation.

Going on last year, the pricey players were not bandwagon material YYT RVP Hazard Aguero Rooney all lost value early on. Early bandwagons were Costa, Dier, Sigurdsson, Fabregas, Pelle. Generally lower priced exciting players with new teams.

Who do you think are this season's. I think Richards, Milner, Sterling, Mitrovic, Lens, Payet could be in the mix.

High profile, under-the-radar picks like Milner, Sterling, Yaya, Cabaye, Clyne would be the ones that will ramp up really quickly.

I made a promise to myself last year that i would not longer "chase" team value, rather just go with the guys getting the points regardless of price point. The team value thing tends to take care of itself. Furthermore, its easier to downgrade to and form players than it is to upgrade so there is some merit in starting with a few of those 'pricey players' GW1

I like it. covers the big teams pretty well - not sure if United are worth doubling up on. I would rather double up on Arsenal attack (Walcott + Ozil/Ramsey/Santi). You know what you're getting into with Lukaku...

          Why Mangala?

United's just a little feeling I have...(although, I'm fairly certain it's because I'm a United fan but oh well). I've never really liked doubling up on the same team in the same position, not sure I'm ready for that at the start of the season. Just a thing. (Probably a hinderance)

He's got some decent fixtures in a top team's defence, and fixtures get really nice when GW 4 kicks in, but I can see 1 or 2 cleanies even in the first 3, so it's all good.

            Thanks 🙂

top team's defense doesn't really apply to MCI. Mangala, with 12 CS, is the 16th defender with most CS last season. Zaba only got 11 CS. The likes of SWA, WBA & SOU defenders have more CS than him.

Moreover, problem with getting a Def from top team is you actually minimize the chance to double/triple up their attack when the fixtures are good. I tend to believe that we are more likely to get MCI attacking assets come GW4.

Although, they picked up towards the end of the season though. 6/7 CS at the Etihad at the end of last season. They have quite a nice run of fixtures at the start, other than Chelsea, and I have Jenkinson to cover with LEI, so that's fine.

                Who would you suggest instead?

This is an interesting point. They say it's a myth, but I truly believe that top teams do tend to tight up their defense at the latter stages of season. CHE and MCI did just that last season - they went from free-scoring form to cautious mode towards the end. Hence I think it's better to load up the likes of Kun, Silva, Sterling, YYT, etc. instead.

Call me casual but I think Clyne is probably the best pick at 5.5 despite moving to the so-called less "defensive-reliable" team. Purely on his defensive stats and attacking threat. Darmian should be golden once he find his footing, but LVG's comments just made him unfavourable. Shaw if starting the season is exciting, but he got some threat from Young. Consider Williams, PVA or even Smalling

it's not a myth man, think it's a fact. very obvious personally over the last 3 seasons that teams tighten up towards the end.

you reckon Chelsea will blitz teams away at the start and prove that they can do it in style, or continue where they left off boring boring chelsea?

I think they will do it in style - but then they may play it cautiously in that GW2 fixture.

Ivan is still a must imo - he still got that massive, massive goal threat and imo worth 7.0

Chelsea would be a straightforward pick. United if you dare. But I might just take the opportunity to double up on Sunderland and upgrade Simpson to a rotation you like.

Still abit early, but just judging by the Everton game, the whole team is very fit and could well start off very quickly. Was at the game and while obviously a tiring game in ridiculous conditions, Ozil and Ramsey got 90 min. Caz Giroud and Walcott got a solid 75 minutes. Kosc got 80min or so.

Plus it's not as if there's been big changes to their midfield - same players and same system. And we all know where most of their points come from...midfield. Most will have 1 midfielder, going 2 myself as abit of a differential

Walcott for sure, and at the moment Ozil. I think Ozil will do well and should be a mainstay in the Arsenal system and is the perfect player for Walcott to play off.

If I don't go Ozil, it will be Cazorla (set pieces, pens, and just generally a genius) and then Ramsey (selfish, makes his own chances_.

Yeah flew down to catch the game with some friends from KL and SG. Was surprised at the tempo and competitiveness of the game. Of course there were lulls, but with Wilshere and Coleman going into tackles full blooded and the penalty box scruffles between Kosc/Chambers vs Stones/Jagielka, the crowd really got going.

                    Lucky you.

Yeah against PL rival, I think they took the pre-season seriously.

You really think Wally is worth 0.5 more than Santi or Ozil? After watching the game, I'm more tempted than Santi. Wish I can double up but I think I won't

watching the game made me sure of the Walcott pick. his off the ball movement is so aggressive. Always on defender's shoulders, splits the centerbacks and blitzes them with his speed.

I think the 0.5 extra is warranted by his much higher goal threat. Santi and Ozil remain good picks for obvious reasons nonetheless. People worry about picking the wrong Arsenal mid - i'll just increase my chances with 2 😀

          Like your keepers.
Like the Mert & Jenk picks, unsure about Mangala & Simpson, Yoshida may be too temporary.
          Midfield is great.
Strikers apart from Rooney are too punty. I'd prefer Pelle from the start since I'm not a fan of pre-planning the use of FT.

            Cheers

Simpson is seriously not even a pick, he's a horrible one 😆 . I'm happy to go for a 4.0 at the start to enable a better team elsewhere. Quite happy with the balance so happy for him to stay until the 4.0 options become a little clearer.

Gardos has been ruled out for quite a long time I believe, so Southampton's notable CBs are only Fonte and Yoshida atm, and he's also just scored last night. Why is he temporary? Is there something I've missed? Had Cedric before but after the Gardos news and the goal, I've put him in and upgraded a 4.5 to Jenks with the spare cash.

Yeah, I thin I'll probably bottle it and go with Pelle in the end. Looks a better option and in some good form.
Wilson is the best bet in that budget range I reckon. If he fails, I'll have to do something about it, but for now I think his price is worth that risk considering what it allows me to have elsewhere.

            Thanks 🙂

              Fair point.

I think SOU will sign a CB. But if they don't, they Yoshida might be a good pick and a serious early bandwagon contender.

Pelle has the form and also fixtures. I don't think JRod will steal his prospects right away. But I believe Mane is a better pick because he's more lively in the attack. Still a good pick that big guy.

based on your points, I'd prefer Deeney as he;s on PKs. Not sure about BOU.

              No prob.

Yeap, if they do then I'll revert back to Cedric and downgrade Jenks/Mangala

Koeman's even said JRod will be eased in and isn't 100% yet, so I wouldn't worry about him risking Pelle's position atm.
Can't fit in Mane into my midfield. I think the options I have atm are better in midfield that is. 🙂

Is he? I'll have a look into him...might be a better option.

Well, that's not a whoel load to choose from at 5.5

I suppose Defoe could be a decent pick, and the other big shout from the cheap promoted sides is Deeney. I really don't know much about either Wilson or Deeney, and we won't know how they'll fare in the PL until we actually see them, so it's really just a guessing game at this stage, and I prefer Bournemouth's fixtures atm.

Actually thanks for this...Defoe looks pretty good at 5.5... with some nice fixtures as well.

i'm going the safe tactic with regards to 3rd striker position - Sakho first and downgrade to the 5.5 that looks good instead of making the wrong choice from the start and possibly being priced out of the best 5.5m forward by 0.1 or 0.2 if he starts well.

He is first choice but was showing signs of getting old last season and Gabriel played the odd game there (may have been cup games). I really think he's a 2/3 game bad spell away from being dropped and Gabriel coming in and cementing the place.

Ritchie has all the potential in the world to do well but unless I'm stuck with 6.0m max at 4th midfielder, I think I'll rather go with a PL proven quality like Hendo, Milner, Chadli or Siggy. Payet is a different story though - i like him as a player.

Sakho is the best priced striker at 6.5 - has fixtures too. Easy to downgrade if necessary.

Is having two big hitting forwards REALLY necessary? (ex. Rooney and Aguero) Obviously not now with Aguero set to miss early minutes of the season but what about mid-season? If either player has a bad run of form, wouldn't you be missing out on FPL points since almost a quarter of your budget is tied down to just these two players?

Personally, my mind was set on both Aguero and Rooney but after giving it some thought, as much as it pains me to say, I think I may have to part from one of them (sad face)

        What do you guys think?

Read the hot topic by andy85wsm. Nice discussion there about this sort of query. fwiw I'm going with Roo Costa and Sakho for the flexibilty to jump into bandwagons if necessary, and I believe those 3 can have good starts to the season

I think it's not REALLY necessary in most seasons...but this season, the 7-9 bracket doesn't fill me with confidence.

Lukaku is Lukaku. Benteke has many variables. JRod has doubts. Ings meh. Giroud game time in question and mids seem to have better value. Pelle is a decent pick for me still but Sakho is more tempting at 1.5m less.

Seconf year here, fully acclimatised to the language and lifestyle. He's an explosive talent as evidenced by his hatty last year. Scored 11 goals and 4 assist in on 2132 minutes last year. Im just on him

Mane is inconsistent sometimes though and he doesn't have many big hitter around him. It doesn't help that his defense is in shambles either.

          ruddy hennessey

          bassong huth clyne oshea staylor

          depay hazard walcott eriksen surman

          sakho rooney benteke

          1m itb

          some thoughts of my own:

          1) picked double norwich for home fixtures..risky though

          2) staylor is a 4m placeholder..tempted to spend the 1m itb to upgrade but currently prefer to use the cash to get kun

          3) picked sakho for the fixtures and giving me time(gw4) to swap to budget another striker..options should appear since close to 12 teams have strikers around that price range

          4) rooney likely to make way for aguero on gw4..will hold out aguero for the 1st 3

No need to double up on Norwich DEF and GK. You can easily play them both expecting a CS and they concede 2

Doubling on Norwich too, I think they will surprise. Plus it's the same defence I remember from a few seasons back...I think they can handle it.

Arsenal defender over Clyne. Eriksen to me, is poor value unless you hold him over whole season.

Not sure about doubling up on Depay and Rooney. I would go Costa over Rooney. Think Costa will be a reliable choice and faces up to his favourite Swansea first.

With the logic that expensive players are easier to downgrade than the other way around, how does this look? I would like to have one more really good option both in defense and in midfield, but I guess it will be easier to jump on the right bandwagons with this setup:

          4.5+4.5
          Azpi - Mertesacker - Angelia - Mings - 4.0
          Haz - Silva - Walcott - Ritchie - 4.5
          Rooney - Benteke - Sakho

          Here's a tip

If you would prefer to have the London UK time displayed in the comments rather than (12mins ago) you can.

          - Go to your profile
          - scroll to the bottom
          - change timezone to 'Europe/London
          - change date display to 'actual time'

Its a really handy way to keep up with times for those of us living outside of the UK. Saves having to convert it all the time.

          B - Costa and Fab/Sterling

I feel Costa may be a deadweight in my team, with consistent returns of 1 goal, 1 booking and 0 bonus points last season I'm just not sure I can justify spending 11m for very frustrating 5 point returns the after time.

I thought so but initially his fixtures arent great so Im wonder does he warrant the risk of rotation.

tough fixtures with risk of rotation..likely to rely on attacking points even if he starts.

better options out there who are nailed on and good fixtures with a lesser attacking threat

OR better stretch it to Ivan/Mata/Ritchie.

Not a fan but thinknthe general consensus so far is

            Cedric Fonte New CB Targett

            Until Betrand is fit

Betrand will take Targetts place when hes fit so its only a short term move. Long term I think Cedric probably offers the best value
