Great Expectations

Great Expectations – Matt Ritchie

After a dazzling campaign for Championship winners Bournemouth, Matt Ritchie is very much at the forefront of Fantasy managers’ minds ahead of the 2015-16 season. The winger was the driving force behind the Cherries’ title triumph last year, picking up 15 goals and 17 assists in the league alone, and with a price of 6.0 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, there is every suggestion that he will justify selection in our squads.

It’s been a meteoric rise for the Gosport-born Scottish international. His role in Swindon’s 2012 promotion from the fourth tier earned him the League Two Player of the Season award and, after impressing from the off the following season, he was snapped up by Bournemouth in January 2013 before going on to pick up the League One Player of the Season award for 2012/13.

Ritchie hasn’t stopped impressing since and his sterling performances during the previous campaign earned him a Scotland call up, whilst he was also named in the Championship Team of the Year. Now it is time for the winger to prove himself at the top level…

KEY FACTORS

    • Fantasy managers love a trigger-happy midfielder and Ritchie certainly falls into that category. No midfielder managed more attempts on goal than the Cherries’ man (151) last season and the winger also fired in a goal attempt more frequently than any of his team-mates, registering 3.3 efforts per appearance. Impressively, an average of 24.7 minutes per shot would have placed him third amongst midfielders with a minimum of ten appearances last term – just ahead of Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez (25.4), albeit at a lower level. Having climbed from League Two to Premier League level in three years, there is no doubting that Ritchie has the ability to adapt to a new division – since the 2011-12 League One campaign, he has averaged 11.5 goals and 10.5 league goals per season.

    • Ritchie’s ability from long range could be a key factor. The Scotland international produced 100 of his 151 efforts from outside the area and is renowned for the power of his shooting and long-distance accuracy. Indeed, six of his 15 goals last year came from outside the box – a tally matched by only Christian Eriksen amongst Premier League midfielders from 2014/15. Although Bournemouth enjoyed the most possession of all Championship clubs in their promotion campaign, they will not expect to work the ball into the box quite so easily this term and Ritchie’s ability from distance could prove vital.

    • No Championship player managed more than Ritchie’s 17 assists last season. The club’s number one for dead-ball duties is by far the Cherries’ most creative player and will be vital in forging opportunities if Eddie Howe’s side are to avoid the drop. Ritchie provided 98 goal scoring opportunities for his team-mates in 2014/15, which equates to an average of 38.07 minutes per chance created. Compared to Premier League midfielders with a minimum of 20 appearances in the season gone by, this would have placed him tenth, just ahead of illustrious company such as Gylfi Sigurdsson (38.1 minutes) and Alexis Sanchez (39 minutes).

    • Although many promoted clubs tend to start cautiously in a bid to contain opponents, Eddie Howe is adamant that Bournemouth will continue with the same approach that saw the Cherries register an average 58.6% possession last year – more than any other side in the Championship. Discussing his approach over the summer, Howe’s determination to go on the attack can only be good news for Ritchie’s prospects:

“We always felt that, by implementing a football philosophy that could be transferable from League One to the Championship, and the Championship to the Premier League, it would give us more of a chance. If you rip it all up and start again just because you’re in the top division, it’s too difficult. I don’t think we’d forsake our principles just because we’ve gone up. Sure, if you could guarantee me success playing a different way, being more direct and crossing balls in earlier, then we’d look at it. But in the Premier League the best way to win is to dominate the ball. That’s what we seek to do.”

  • One look at the early schedule suggests potential suitors may want to get Ritchie on board in their initial squads. Although the Cherries face two away clashes in the first three rounds of fixtures, they are rated top of our season ticker for the first eight Gameweeks, with home clashes against Aston Villa, Leicester, Sunderland and Watford, in addition to trips to Norwich and Stoke, heightening their Fantasy potential from the outset.

    Out of Curioisity..
Say you were planning a GW 13 WC..
How many weeks would you set the ticker up for to choose an attacker?
And how many weeks for a defender?

5 and 12 here.. Would not want to waste transfers on defense while i'd prob want to shift attackers according to fixtures at the start so pointless planning and 8 man attack based on 12 fixtures

Attack, maybe four or even three. You'll be jumping on the bandwagons after that.

Yup.. set up a team based on the first 12 fixtures and realised the error of my ways. gonna set up for a shorter span.. this early WC thing is confusing me! i'm so used to waiting till january

I don't like it either but i'm open to it this year with so many options around and question marks unanswered before GW1.

Going Aguero-less until GW4 then tearing my team up with hits(maybe 2FTs + -8)/WC looks best.

Bet this differential team will top the template team during first 6 gw's

    Panti (Hennessey)
    Terry Creswell Clyne Huth Saylor
    Silva Eriksen Coutinho Siggy Mahrez
Giroud Lukaku Pelle (aka donkey frontline)

Personally, i am not keen on Creswell. Only thing i worry about is a clear captain option (a Hazard, Aguero, Costa or Rooney).

I am not saying it won't work but your captain choices may be a little more difficult.

This is the team i am currently leaning towards:

    Schemeichel, Schwarzer
Azpiliceuta, Cedric, O’Shea, Mings, S. Taylor
    Sterling, Fabregas, Walcott, Ritchie, Wanyama
    Rooney, Costa, Benteke

Defence is slightly weak but it gives me some great options up front. 6 captain options too.

    What do you think?

I will probably wildcard fairly early. The team is set up for the short term

    Many thanks.

Nice team, was wondering how you were affording it before I saw you didn't have Hazard, I think it's a viable option though

        Thanks man.

I feel more comfortable captaining Costa than Hazard early season. I just thunk he will score regularly. 12 points from a captain (6 x 2) is something i will take.

I would like to upgrade S. Taylor to a playing 4.5m.

I just can't squeeze the 0.5m out of anywhere really though.

Walcott to a 8.5 arsenal middfielder maybe and use the 0.5 to upgrade Taylor, but that is just a suggestion ofcourse

I think so. Against Barca you have to load the middle of the pitch and keep close together so that they can't thread their pinpoint passes through as easily. Vs most other teams Man Utd will play more expansively and stretch the game out.

I don't think it necessarily means Depay left wing, but his pace is probably most useful there.

    2 questions lads.

    A. Sterling or Ozil if you have Walcott already?

    B. Is it folly to go with Wilson for GW 1 and then switch to Sakho for GW 2 and 3?

    1. Elijah's Wood
      • 9 Years
      8 years, 10 months ago

Currently in the same situation with A, thinking to maybe double up and get Ozil as I will have to transfer out Walcott after a few weeks anyway (entirely dependant on Wenger of course).

B - get Sakho, saves you a transfer

Okay. But would you recommend using a WC early (GW4 I'm thinking) to earn some money or is it best if you try set up your team the best you can straight away so hopefully you won't have to use it. With straight away I mean like having Agüero from the start for example.

    Ruddy, Butland
    Ivanovic, Darmian, Huth, O'Shea, Francis
    Hazard, Walcott, Ramsey, Henderson, Wanyama
    Rooney, Benteke, Deeney

    Thoughts on this team?

Henderson and Benteke double up is slightly concerning. Feel like a double up in Arsenal midfielders is a good option considering the potential points spread in their team.

With the amount of decent midfielders available in the £8-10m price bracket it would be silly to double up on Chelsea mids

Are many going to be better than those two though? Fixtures aren't great but beyond that they're both sure things in the long term. Plus Hazard + Costa would still be a Chelsea double up...

          • 9 Years
          8 years, 10 months ago

Agreed, but there are less options in the premium price range up front, most people will have one or both of Costa and Rooney as a place holder for Kun.

Just feel that maybe getting a United/City/Ars mid would be better than having both Hazard and Cesc, would just pick one for now, spread your damages

Trouble with Sunderland is that its looking like a minefield of who will start, currently on O'Shea but not happy with it lol.

Yeh, ive currently not got any city coverage but am scared not to so unsure, maybe getting 5 playing defenders will be good in case of any injury. Having a £4m non playing defender will eventually hurt you.

      A. Ivan and Silva are much better than Azpi and Sterling. Plus not sure on Benteke in a new team yet.

Hi, I was hoping someone could help me as this is my first season of playing football fantasy.
    My current team is:

    Cech, Schwarzer
Azpilicueta, Cedric, Fonté, Yoshida, D. Simpson
    M. Ritchie, Ozil, cazorla, hazard, D. silva
    Costa, Deeney, Grabban

I was hoping for generic advice.

I.e is it worth 1 million to have Cech over someone like Butland? Should I keep Yoshida, Would shouldn't I keep, are there any players that I must use? Anything of that sort!

Thank you very much for any help 😀

Interesting formation, assuming your playing 3-5-2 i would probably get Wilson in for Grabban and rotate him with Deeney for their home fixtures.
Doubling up on defence at the beginning is risky as you dont know how strong each team is until a couple weeks into the league, tripling up on Soton is crazy lol - personally i dont think they will be as strong as last season so would swap out either Cedric or Fonte. Yoshida wont start as word on the street is Koeman is looking to sign 1 or 2 new centrebacks.

One of Ozil or Caz for Depay/Mata for United coverage, really nice first few fixtures.

Aside from that it looks nice.
