Great Expectations

Great Expectations – Matt Ritchie

After a dazzling campaign for Championship winners Bournemouth, Matt Ritchie is very much at the forefront of Fantasy managers’ minds ahead of the 2015-16 season. The winger was the driving force behind the Cherries’ title triumph last year, picking up 15 goals and 17 assists in the league alone, and with a price of 6.0 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, there is every suggestion that he will justify selection in our squads.

It’s been a meteoric rise for the Gosport-born Scottish international. His role in Swindon’s 2012 promotion from the fourth tier earned him the League Two Player of the Season award and, after impressing from the off the following season, he was snapped up by Bournemouth in January 2013 before going on to pick up the League One Player of the Season award for 2012/13.

Ritchie hasn’t stopped impressing since and his sterling performances during the previous campaign earned him a Scotland call up, whilst he was also named in the Championship Team of the Year. Now it is time for the winger to prove himself at the top level…

KEY FACTORS

    • Fantasy managers love a trigger-happy midfielder and Ritchie certainly falls into that category. No midfielder managed more attempts on goal than the Cherries’ man (151) last season and the winger also fired in a goal attempt more frequently than any of his team-mates, registering 3.3 efforts per appearance. Impressively, an average of 24.7 minutes per shot would have placed him third amongst midfielders with a minimum of ten appearances last term – just ahead of Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez (25.4), albeit at a lower level. Having climbed from League Two to Premier League level in three years, there is no doubting that Ritchie has the ability to adapt to a new division – since the 2011-12 League One campaign, he has averaged 11.5 goals and 10.5 league goals per season.

    • Ritchie’s ability from long range could be a key factor. The Scotland international produced 100 of his 151 efforts from outside the area and is renowned for the power of his shooting and long-distance accuracy. Indeed, six of his 15 goals last year came from outside the box – a tally matched by only Christian Eriksen amongst Premier League midfielders from 2014/15. Although Bournemouth enjoyed the most possession of all Championship clubs in their promotion campaign, they will not expect to work the ball into the box quite so easily this term and Ritchie’s ability from distance could prove vital.

    • No Championship player managed more than Ritchie’s 17 assists last season. The club’s number one for dead-ball duties is by far the Cherries’ most creative player and will be vital in forging opportunities if Eddie Howe’s side are to avoid the drop. Ritchie provided 98 goal scoring opportunities for his team-mates in 2014/15, which equates to an average of 38.07 minutes per chance created. Compared to Premier League midfielders with a minimum of 20 appearances in the season gone by, this would have placed him tenth, just ahead of illustrious company such as Gylfi Sigurdsson (38.1 minutes) and Alexis Sanchez (39 minutes).

    • Although many promoted clubs tend to start cautiously in a bid to contain opponents, Eddie Howe is adamant that Bournemouth will continue with the same approach that saw the Cherries register an average 58.6% possession last year – more than any other side in the Championship. Discussing his approach over the summer, Howe’s determination to go on the attack can only be good news for Ritchie’s prospects:

“We always felt that, by implementing a football philosophy that could be transferable from League One to the Championship, and the Championship to the Premier League, it would give us more of a chance. If you rip it all up and start again just because you’re in the top division, it’s too difficult. I don’t think we’d forsake our principles just because we’ve gone up. Sure, if you could guarantee me success playing a different way, being more direct and crossing balls in earlier, then we’d look at it. But in the Premier League the best way to win is to dominate the ball. That’s what we seek to do.”

  • One look at the early schedule suggests potential suitors may want to get Ritchie on board in their initial squads. Although the Cherries face two away clashes in the first three rounds of fixtures, they are rated top of our season ticker for the first eight Gameweeks, with home clashes against Aston Villa, Leicester, Sunderland and Watford, in addition to trips to Norwich and Stoke, heightening their Fantasy potential from the outset.

I like the overall strength of 3-5-2 without Hazard but I don't like the loss of a good captain option.

Aside from Aguero there's not really any other strikers I want anyway

Looks pretty nice, only way to fit hazard in would be to downgrade mane to ritchie then upgrade Fab mebbe. With tht said, i still like the balance you have without haz in the side. I have a very similar team but i did keep haz in it. Tough call, but i think fitting in hazard , sanchez, aguero all at a later date can prove troublesome, thus getting him early doesn't force an esrly WC if he starts hitting

I really like your attack and i now like the giroud pick

defence is alright i guess but i'd change skrtel

Midfield less confident about. Walcott is a conundrum right now. Mane and depay are both punts and it depends whether you're willing to take it.

      Fabregas over hazard 😉 😉 😉

I really don't see Giroud losing his spot upfront from the get go. Especially with Sanchez out the first few weeks, I see Walcott (if anything) playing on the wing.

Always possible to change, we'll see

Not a fan of the defense, but with a front 3 like that you must already know where you are putting your marbles.

Double Leicester with a new manager+ a defneder from a promoted team just feels risky. I think ozil over walcott could be a nice move for you, then using that .5 to beef up your D to include some chelsea or arsenal.

Also depay is too much of an unproven quantity for me, given that you already have rooney you could look elsewhere for some proven epl performers (lots at that price range)

Seems like you have hazard on your side with 4 premium mids. Downgradinh one of them to ritchie or a 7.0 and buffing that second attack to a benteke or giroud would be my move. But if i had to choose would go with B and sahko

I remember reading your team earlier in the day and noticed that you'd gone for Huth, Francis and Prodl at the back.

Spookily, I'd started with the same combination. But then I did some research and discovered that SWA/LEI rotate really really well and the Swansea kept a killer amount of clean sheets last season. So i dropped the 0.5 off Prodl and added it to Francis to make him Williams.

            Your thoughts?

Having two players in Azpi and Kosc who will start every week, it's a good plan having the Leicester/Swansea rotation with a 4.0 in there as you won't need to use him.

I have thought about this myself but it just feels crazy having a squad member who doesn't play

He could be a good shout but may not be fully fit to start off season with.

Does sound a bit light in attack tbh, assume means you have very strong midfield, but need to look at one of Rooney/Costa/Aguero at least surely.

      Little RMT guys/ gals

      Mignolet/Ruddy
      Azpi Cedric Jenkinson/Francis Targett
      Hazard Wacott Mane Ritchie Fletcher
      Costa Rooney Defoe

Would love the extra 1m for Defoe to Sakho, but Sunderland do have great fixtures, can easily find that 1m by changing keepers, but my mind is really set on LIV/NOR and WHU/BOU first 8 week rotations, I'm thinking clean sheets are looking likely, am I looking too much into rotation and being too stubborn ?

think so, as a west ham fan cant see them getting to many cleanies this year without big sam in charge, also bournemouth are newly promoted so might take a few weeks to adjust defense-wise

Cheers for reply, if I had a nailed 5.0 Liverpool defender I could switch defensive rotation to them and Norwich and stick Schmeichel in goal with 4.0 and get Sakho instead of Defoe

I think a SWA/LEI rotaton for the same price would leave you feeling more secure. Swansea kept 13 CS last season. 3rd in the league I think.

The rest of the team looks good, since you're set on not upgrading Defoe.

          1. Jay_

It's just those early Swansea fixtures. I'm not too keen on, thanks for suggestion though, Williams and Huth could work very well plus it would be nice to have CBs rather than full backs for bonus

I agree Swan/Leciester feeling like a stronger GK rotation.

And maybe swapping Jenkinson for a 4.5 defender (maybe Watford they dont rotate too badly with Bou) as dont see WHU getting too many cleanies, and Wally for Caz/Ozil/Ramsey, and then you could get Sakho - think he will make up the points (if any) you may lose from others.

            cech
Cedric, Fonte, Azpilicueta, bertrand, Joel Ward
            Ritchie, Fabregas, Cazorla, Ozil, Silva,
            Costa, Deeney, Callum wilson.

The plan is to rotate wilson + ritchie with bertrand + Wilson (depending on which teams have a home game/ weaker opponent)

3 Soton defenders seems crazy, withour forster cant see them keeping so many clean sheets and there lot of cheaper alternatives that have as good matches at the start, which would free up some cash to boost attack.

Alternatively, move Cech for 5m keeper, then Fonte/Betrand for Kosch/Merty and you get the CS benefit from Cech as well as potential attacking returns. I think other keepers going to earn more save points, as they will be more exposed than Cech.

            RMT Moses Version

            Butland/Hennessey

            Ivanovic/Mertesacker/Huth/Yoshida/S Taylor

            Hazard/Cazorla/Mane/Ritchie/Moses

            Rooney/Giroud/Sakho

.5 left in bank with purpose of going Giroud->Kane for WK2

3 x CHE, 3 x ARS, Ivan Hazard and Roo afforded, Sakho-Ritchie rotation.....I dont see how JM goes for Willian or Cuadrado over Moses at this point.

Yes I want Cazorla, not Ozil.

Not known at this point about Hennessey and if I had to guess Id say no to start the season, but he is the best of the 4.0s to have a shot at relevance in my opinion. Happy to roll with Butland solo. Only one super tough fixture in the first ten weeks.

Moses is admittedly a punt, but one worth going for in my view right now. If it goes bad after 1 or two weeks, another budget mid should emerge as they do every season, and I will make the switch. Usually tough to pick the right cheap mid from the beginning every season, have to spend a transfer anyway.

CHE have one more warmup right? One more look at Moses, but right now I feel good about his chances of starting.

Moses is still a step too far right now as its a certain transfer waiting to happen. Why not try for a more reasonable option?

That extra money could turn defender to an arsenal defender, so still cash in on the boost Cech will bring to the defence in terms of CS, but cheaper GK may get just as many save points as they will be under more attack (see Pants last season)
