Great Expectations

Great Expectations – Matt Ritchie

After a dazzling campaign for Championship winners Bournemouth, Matt Ritchie is very much at the forefront of Fantasy managers’ minds ahead of the 2015-16 season. The winger was the driving force behind the Cherries’ title triumph last year, picking up 15 goals and 17 assists in the league alone, and with a price of 6.0 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, there is every suggestion that he will justify selection in our squads.

It’s been a meteoric rise for the Gosport-born Scottish international. His role in Swindon’s 2012 promotion from the fourth tier earned him the League Two Player of the Season award and, after impressing from the off the following season, he was snapped up by Bournemouth in January 2013 before going on to pick up the League One Player of the Season award for 2012/13.

Ritchie hasn’t stopped impressing since and his sterling performances during the previous campaign earned him a Scotland call up, whilst he was also named in the Championship Team of the Year. Now it is time for the winger to prove himself at the top level…

KEY FACTORS

    • Fantasy managers love a trigger-happy midfielder and Ritchie certainly falls into that category. No midfielder managed more attempts on goal than the Cherries’ man (151) last season and the winger also fired in a goal attempt more frequently than any of his team-mates, registering 3.3 efforts per appearance. Impressively, an average of 24.7 minutes per shot would have placed him third amongst midfielders with a minimum of ten appearances last term – just ahead of Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez (25.4), albeit at a lower level. Having climbed from League Two to Premier League level in three years, there is no doubting that Ritchie has the ability to adapt to a new division – since the 2011-12 League One campaign, he has averaged 11.5 goals and 10.5 league goals per season.

    • Ritchie’s ability from long range could be a key factor. The Scotland international produced 100 of his 151 efforts from outside the area and is renowned for the power of his shooting and long-distance accuracy. Indeed, six of his 15 goals last year came from outside the box – a tally matched by only Christian Eriksen amongst Premier League midfielders from 2014/15. Although Bournemouth enjoyed the most possession of all Championship clubs in their promotion campaign, they will not expect to work the ball into the box quite so easily this term and Ritchie’s ability from distance could prove vital.

    • No Championship player managed more than Ritchie’s 17 assists last season. The club’s number one for dead-ball duties is by far the Cherries’ most creative player and will be vital in forging opportunities if Eddie Howe’s side are to avoid the drop. Ritchie provided 98 goal scoring opportunities for his team-mates in 2014/15, which equates to an average of 38.07 minutes per chance created. Compared to Premier League midfielders with a minimum of 20 appearances in the season gone by, this would have placed him tenth, just ahead of illustrious company such as Gylfi Sigurdsson (38.1 minutes) and Alexis Sanchez (39 minutes).

    • Although many promoted clubs tend to start cautiously in a bid to contain opponents, Eddie Howe is adamant that Bournemouth will continue with the same approach that saw the Cherries register an average 58.6% possession last year – more than any other side in the Championship. Discussing his approach over the summer, Howe’s determination to go on the attack can only be good news for Ritchie’s prospects:

“We always felt that, by implementing a football philosophy that could be transferable from League One to the Championship, and the Championship to the Premier League, it would give us more of a chance. If you rip it all up and start again just because you’re in the top division, it’s too difficult. I don’t think we’d forsake our principles just because we’ve gone up. Sure, if you could guarantee me success playing a different way, being more direct and crossing balls in earlier, then we’d look at it. But in the Premier League the best way to win is to dominate the ball. That’s what we seek to do.”

  • One look at the early schedule suggests potential suitors may want to get Ritchie on board in their initial squads. Although the Cherries face two away clashes in the first three rounds of fixtures, they are rated top of our season ticker for the first eight Gameweeks, with home clashes against Aston Villa, Leicester, Sunderland and Watford, in addition to trips to Norwich and Stoke, heightening their Fantasy potential from the outset.

Is it just me that thinks Depay is absolutely wasted in the middle? It might be good for his goal scoring, but he hasn't contributed with a lot so far this pre-season.
I think he would be much more effective on the left, but it's hard to drop Young with his form, but it would be interesting to see how he would perform on the left for United.

Does not matter where he is playing, he is just a polished version of Januzaj who scored loads of goals in a very inferior league.

If United play 433 and play him in the middle, while selling Angel di Maria at the same time, I have no idea what they were thinking...

Just don't get why they are in pretty much every team on here, you only get three striker spots, and most will play 3 - 4 - 3, so don't waste a spot on a good championship player.

It's madness, he played in the equivalent of the Scottish league and has taken part on light pre season games, if the United twitter feed posted a link of him doing a basic drag back which they tried to palm of as amazing skill.

Let's see how he gets on in a proper game against a half decent team when the PL starts, Barcelona don't count, this is a fitness builder for them.

To compare the Eredivision to the Scottish league is madness.

You get League Two players going to Scottish PL teams and they go straight into the first team.

Eredivision is probably the 4/5th best league in Europe, I would say the championship is a better standard than Scottish PL.

As a barca fan, Pedro didn't play much last year, but he is out there, and I guess we are shopping him to man utd. He looks active, and he hustles back. Could've made more better crosses, and been more incisive lIke Iniesta, but he is good, and would help with speed. He scored a few a couple a seasons ago.

    Thoughts on the first half:

    - Defence is looking much better than last season espeially as the full back are making it a point to drop back and defend. Shaw and Darmian are looking good.
    - Depay is looking sharp, took a few good touches and made some good runs, but just haven't been found by one of his teammates.
-Now, the most crucial one, I think Rooney isn't looking very sharp. Taking a lot of bad touches, losing possession, giving the ball away, even though he scored the goal (which was gifted by Barca)

Oh and DDG is back in action.

Saw a few reports saying he was getting very high up the pitch at times (in a worrying way).

        Our very own Ivanovic?

Yeah, he is. Certainly has been one occasion when the defence were lobbed to just outside the 18 yard box on that side and darmian was still near the half way line.

I agree and hope he plays ahead of Valencia. Even though he isn't very good with the ball (neither is Valencia tbh), he is sound defensively.

Watch the replay of the goal again, Rooney two handed pushed Adriano in the back to free up space. A savvy play essentially by a vet that led to an easy goal. He sorta pawned Adriano, who should've defended better and gotten the refs call.

Man utd defense is looking pretty good, but barca have also just barely missed finishing on two or three occasions, and the way Roberto got so open early on against ddg was a defensive lapse. If Rakitic was out there with Iniesta, let alone, messi, Neymar, and dani Alves, I think man utd would have had to deal with greater pressure.

I think he looks confident, just isn't getting into the right place. Looked good for the brief time he was on the ball, although that wasn't for long. Would like to hear your side though.

He's too confident, that's his problem today.
He should keep it simple and play faster, need to many touches right now.

It's a tough one to be honest, I can't really choose any of the 5.5 - 5m defenders with any great confidence.

If you're not going 6m at least then might as well find a good 4.5m rotation set and have a strong mid/forward line.

O'Shea I don't think is as nailed as most people think, Kaboul didn't move from Spurs bench to sit on the Sunderland one, and Coates was a favourite of Advocate since he took over last season.

I don't trust Crystal Palace's defense but Speroni maybe the most talented 4.5 available. I'd pick a Swansea or West Ham defender over Cedric. Southampton need a new CB so Cedric is out of my team until then. Downgrade Costa to Benteke and upgrade Fab to Hazard. Love the Cazorla/Ozil double up. Ozil will do well for the first couple of weeks

placed a lot of hours of research in this draft and have had plenty of drafts rated thus far. But has it paid off?

Panty Hennessey (maybe switch to a 4.5/4.5 depending on Hennesey's transfer)

    Hazard Walcott Sterling Tadic Surman
    Rooney Benteke Sakho

Mane is too pricey and inconsistent for 1.0 extra. Tadic did well at the beginning of the last season and I expect him to do well at the beginning of this season. Tadic is doing well in pre season. Great value at 7.0

I don't like the idea of doubling up on Chelsea attack for the first 3 weeks. Wilson + any other 5.5 or less striker is a wait and see. Benteke is great value and has better fixtures than Costa. Sterling will obviously outperform Milner. Milner isn't a great fantasy option in my opinion; especially as a CM. I'll keep your advise in mind

So you're saying Milner or Sterling. Yeah, no you're wrong.
Costa is too expensive, i'd have to drop Rooney for him. I'd rather have Chelsea + Manu + Liverpool cover than just Chelsea + Liverpool.

looks really good, pretty similar to my team. the concerns i have are a) how will benteke adjust, maybe gettig him from gw 1 isnt the move
      b) walcott > nailed on arsenal mid. ( for more than just first few gws)

with that said, benteke + wally have that explosive potential that could really set u up nicely. ill probably end up keeping them as well unless walcott doesnt start community shield or benteke geta very limited preseason minutes

      1. Boo Ya Ka Sha
        • 9 Years
        8 years, 11 months ago

yeah if Walcott isn't nailed then Ozil will come in. I have no reason to doubt that Benteke won't do well at Liverpool. He had nearly 50% of Aston Villa's goals last season and that was with barely any quality around him. At least now he has Clyne, Hendo, Milner, Lallana, Coutinho, Firmino, and Ings around him. He should do well.

BUT he was also the be all and end all at Villa, he won't be now due to the players you mentioned plus he may lose pens which helped hid numbers.

He is just as likely to get Rodgers the sack as he is to bring him success if he flops, pressure is on, let's see how he copes with it.
