Scout Report – Manuel Lanzini

Last week, West Ham made Argentinian midfielder Manuel Lanzini their seventh summer signing, with the 22-year-old joining on a season-long loan from UAE Arabian Gulf League side Al-Jazira, with an option to make the move permanent.

New Hammers boss Slaven Bilic was glowing in his praise of Lanzini, nicknamed “The Jewel”, and likened the new acquisition to a certain Man City playmaker:

“I watched him two years ago and I wanted to take him to Besiktas, but it was difficult. Now, the chance has come to get him, he’s going to help us a lot as he will add even more creativity in the crucial parts of the pitch. At the age of 20, he was given the No 10 jersey at River Plate who, with Boca Juniors, are a massive club of course. He’s not very strong but he rides challenges, he doesn’t go down – so I hope he could be big for us. There are deep playmakers like [Andrea] Pirlo or [Luka] Modric or you have playmakers between the lines up front like Silva. He’s more like him but he can play in all positions behind the strikers.”

THE HISTORY

Having come through the youth system at River Plate, Lanzini made his senior debut as a 17-year-old in a 1-0 win over Tigre in August 2010. He made 22 appearances for Los Millonarios during the 2010/11 season, although he failed to find the back of the net. Lanzini then spent the 2011/12 campaign on loan at Brazilian side Fluminese, where he made 37 appearances in all competitions, scoring five goals, and helped them win the Carioca in 2012.

Upon his return to River Plate ahead of the 2012/13 season, Lanzini was handed the coveted number ten shirt, worn by the likes of Ariel Ortega, and went on to provide eight goals and two assists in 26 league appearances before stepping up his creativity the following year, delivering five goals and nine assists from 41 outings in all competitions.

In 2014, Lanzini joined Al-Jazira, and scored eight goals in 24 league appearances alongside former Juventus and Roma forward Mirko Vucinic, helping secure a second-place finish in the league.

Lanzini has also been capped four times for Argentina at under-20 level, but has yet to earn a call-up to the senior side.

THE PROSPECTS

Although Bilic has opted for 4-4-2 on occasion during the summer, the Hammers are expected to line up in a 4-2-3-1 for the season ahead. The Croatian primarily employed that formation during his time at Besiktas and rolled out such a system for last weekend’s trip to Charlton.

This would certainly enhance Lanzini’s prospects of finding a place in West Ham’s starting XI, with the young Argentine taking up one of the places alongside fellow new signing Dimitri Payet in the three attacking midfield slots behind a lone striker. This would see the likes of Enner Valencia, Matt Jarvis, Morgan Amalfitano and Mauro Zarate battle it out for the final berth, with Diafra Sakho looking favourite to lead the line.

In terms of match sharpness, though, the new boy has conceded he’s a little behind his team-mates, which indicates he may be eased into life in the top flight until his fitness is up to speed for the demands of the Premier League:

“First of all, I want to settle here, this is a very difficult and competitive league. It’s then about being at the same level as my teammates and getting into the starting XI as quickly as I can. I have already spoken with the manager. I told him I was looking forward to starting training, to getting fit and getting up to speed with my colleagues.”

Certainly, once he’s fully fit, Lanzini – at a price of just 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), could warrant some consideration should he live up to Bilic’s expectations and establish himself as a first-team regular at Upton Park. At this point, though, Payet (7.5) and Sakho (6.5) look the strongest options right now, with the former – who created more scoring opportunities than any other player in Europe’s top five leagues last term – also handed dead-ball duties by Bilic.

Judging by his manager’s comments, Lanzini is clearly a favourite of Bilic’s and the Hammers’ new coach Julian Dicks has also been suitably impressed by what he’s seen in training.

Whilst the Hammers’ first three away matches (ars, liv, mci) are hardly enticing, their first four fixtures at Upton Park pit them against Leicester, Bournemouth, Newcastle and Norwich in the opening seven Gameweeks, suggesting Bilic’s side may well deserve our Fantasy attention. For now, Lanzini looks one to monitor but once he’s up to speed, the Argentine may well emerge as one of the strongest options in the budget midfield bracket.

hard to fault, managed to get Hazard & Aguero with no obvious weaknesses.
Depay looks a great player although personally waiting to see if LVG gives him enough playing time.

Thanks. Yeah - the ideal situation would be to have Rooney and probably Ozil, rather than Giroud and Depa, but that is 1.5 more expensive. I've tried to concentrate on getting attacking coverage form the big hitters.

To those going with Rooney/ Costa and planning to swap to Aguero. Let's look at this scenario:

GW1: Rooney plays Spurs (h), Costa plays Swansea (h), Aguero plays West Brom (a).
GW2: Rooney plays Villa (a), Costa plays Man City (a), Aguero plays Chelsea (h).
GW3: Rooney plays Newcastle (h), Costa plays West Brom (a), Aguero plays Everton (a).
GW4: Rooney plays Swansea (a), Costa plays Palace (h), Aguero plays Watford (h).

So what will happen if Rooney delivers GW1? Are people really going to ditch him for Aguero that plays Chelsea and Everton over a Rooney that plays Villa, Newcastle, Swansea? I can't see the sense personally. Likewise Swapping Costa to Aguero seems a bit sideways.

I assume some will say "I'll wait til GW4 to bring Aguero in" but then again if Aguero does well he may suffer a price rise.. And as the most expensive player in the game this will mean re-structuring your team unless you plan to WC.

Just seems to me that planning a transfer/ WC before the game has even started is bad news, but time will tell I guess.

    Just my two cents....

I can get Aguero in GW 4 with 2-3 transfers and no hits. If he rises it will prob be by .1 or .2 and I can still afford

    Good day,

    I was considering the following:

    Gw 1 front line: lukaku / sakho / costa (1 itb. )
Gw 2 front line: change lukaku to defoe (3.5 itb)
Gw 3 front line: same, save transfer
Gw 4 front line: Change costa to aguero 1.5 itb)

This way ud benefit from lukaku great wk 1 fixture, costas tendency to do well against Swansea and probably a captains armband. As well as bringing in Defoe for gw 2/3 and having sakho too; and having the funds for aguero come gw 4. All this without any minus transfer cost.

      Thoughts appreciated as usually

Silva or Sterling .. Sterling or Silva

This has been a conundrum in the minds of many a manager since the moment the brash, cocky, and arrogant 'Sterling' was announced as the newest addition to the blue side of Manchester. With his price being put at 1£ cheaper than our beloved FPL Star of the previous season 'Silva', some of us were enticed whether he could improve and be a potential golden ticket to the FPL crown.

This led many of us firmly with our scouting caps on towards the pre-season friendlies.
Over the course of the 4 preseason games played so far Silva has managed to score 2 goals & an assist. On the other hand Sterling has been even more lethal aggregating a total of 3 goals & 2 assists coupled with the two penalties he managed to draw. This has piqued our interest even further in the ever menacing Sterling.

So i dug up some research over the past 3 seasons & this is what i managed to find.

First let me start with Silva,

GP GS A CS CC ADW PCR SA YC RC C

    2012-13 32 4 8 14 103 58% 85% 56% 2 0 64

    2013-14 27 7 9 13 84 53% 88% 45% 5 0 54

    2014-15 32 12 7 11 93 46% 86% 60% 8 0 34

If we look closely, then we can see that over the past 3 seasons, the trend has been an increase in goals scored mainly due to a better shot accuracy leading him to become one of the sweetest finishers of the last season. But this has also led him to become a little reckless & a bit selfish with the increase in yellow cards & a dip in the number of crosses.

    Moving on to Sterling,

GP GS A CS CC ADW PCR SA YC RC C

    2012-13 24 2 2 9 37 51% 84% 43% 1 0 51

    2013-14 33 9 5 9 51 53% 82% 67% 3 0 71

    2014-15 35 7 7 13 75 52% 81% 53% 5 0 81

Sterling,on the other hand seems to have shown progression in all areas with a little inconsistency in his shot accuracy. There has been an increase in his chance creation & crosses over the past 3 seasons which is actually a bit surprising considering all the hate he was getting for being selfish.

Many of you might say that Silva has the advantage of 'Experience' over the young 'Flamboyant' englishman, but i feel with all of Silva, Yaya & Aguero's experience behind him (which he sorely missed at his time in Liverpool) he can only improve & (might be I a little bold in saying this) even turn out to be this year's 'Eden Hazard'.

From what you can make out I've already made my decision..hope this helps in making your decision a little bit easy too!!

nice, thanks. I did wonder if Sterling's 'break out' season of 13-14 was largely due to playing alongside Suarez, although now he's at a new club with a new wage, perhaps he won't feel so 'tired'.

      Nice write up Sushant!

If money was no object, I'd go for Silva without a doubt. However, Sterling is playing for a much better side, with better players around him as you said. Sterling could equal or better his performance when playing alongside Suarez/Sturridge the season before last.

Thanks for taking the time to gather all of this info. I do agree that he will have a much better season. How high will his ceiling be is the question? Best fantasy player? Not quite. The shot accuracy is pretty concerning considering Silva scored 12 goals to Sterlings 7 playing roughly 400 mins less than Raheem. Pretty much the difference between their total fantasy scores.

Nice but your fifth mid option and your 2 other defensive options are weak. I think it will limit your rotation options a little. Angella has great scoring stats, but realistically, will Watford keep many clean sheets? Why not a Sunderland defender?

Hmm. Of course the issue then is that Everton have a great GW1 fixture and then it goes downhill. It really depends on how your other defenders would cover him?

No, I don't think we are sure. There seems to be competition for all the sunderland backline except PVA, who is annoyingly 5.0 instead of 4.5

Keep an eye on pre-season, more certainty might emerge. But right now, they're all at risk except PVA.

don't think that O'Shea is nailed on just because he's captain. Kaboul & Coates have been signed since Advocaat has been in charge so maybe they're 'his people'. We just don't know yet though

I've taken the view that Kaboul has come to replace O'Shea, and So I have gone with Coates.

I would say coates is the most risky out of those three.

Thanks all, sorry for delay. Interesting, oshea is in a lot of teams who could have a problem then. I guess by end of pre-season it will be clearer. Ta

O'shea will be nailed on for start of season. He's our captain and kaboul/coates would be untested. I feel if o'sheas form dips or he loses his spot to injury/suspension then he might not get it back.

With regards to matthews it's a wait and see. I personally think he'll start the season as first choice RB, however Jones didn't really do anything wrong end of last season, so he may be given the chance to continue that.

Ah thanks, a bit of sunderland knowledge! Oshea was poor at times last season so could all change if he doesn't perform, but ok to start with

I agree and as a fan I would be delighted if o'shea was dropped. I just think as captain he'll be first choice at least at the start of the season, but with strong competition now it's good to know his place isn't guaranteed regardless.

Ta, good to know. I might try and find the extra 0.5 for pva, he's always good for attacking points

Hey guys, thoughts and tips on my team would be great. A few roughies with Mata and Ramsey but i think they are quite under-rated and will score well. Also had Aguero in my team but weakened the rest of my team too much, but if he comes back strong I will be trying to fit him in.

    Ruddy (Butland)

    Mert Aspi Huth (Francis O'shea)

    Walcott Mata Sterling Chadli (Wanyama)

    Costa Rooney Sakho (0.0mil ITB)

    Cheers

    CRINIX

    Thank you

What do we think of this, for first 3 weeks until WC so no rotation:

    Pant / 4m
Ivan - Kos - Fonte (Bassong, Targett)
Sterling - Walcott - Haz - Henderson (Anya)
    Rooney - Benteke - Sakho

    De Gea - Schwarzer

Azpi - Merte- Oshea - Yoshida - Distin

    Rooney - Sakho - Defoe

I would have Wilson or Deeney instead of Defoe.
I dunno if Walcott will start.

I would downgrade Yoshida to Targett and upgrade Distin to Cederic or Williams.
I also think Cech is a better option than De Gea.
