Sky Sports Analysis – The Man of The Match Awards

In our latest pre-season article on the Sky Sports game, we turn attention to the most arbitrary of scoring methods – the Man of the The Match (MoTM) award.

While it’s often easy to overlook the significance of this accolade, it should be noted that MoTM is worth five points in the Sky Sports game – the same amount as a goal or clean sheet.

As the award is dished out by the Sky Sports match reporter, and can sometimes differ from the televised opinion, it is far more difficult to predict and quantify than likely goals or clean sheets.

Using the last couple of season’s data, however, we can look to highlight certain players and positions and their potential chances of securing future accolades.

TOP OVERALL RECIPIENTS

Let’s take a look at the players who gained five or more MoTM awards last season.

NameStartsMoTMStarts – MOTM %(MoTM 13/14)
Eden Hazard381232%9
Sergio Aguero30827%3
Harry Kane28829%n/a
David Silva32722%6
Yannick Bolasie31723%6
Sadio Mane24625%n/a
Philippe Coutinho32619%2
Alexis Sanchez34618%n/a
Jamie Vardy26623%n/a
Danny Ings35617%n/a
Raheem Sterling34515%5
Stewart Downing37514%2
Papiss Cisse11545%0
Gabriel Agbonlahor30517%2

Here are a few points to note:

  • Seven forwards and midfielders make up the top players here, with not a defender or goalkeeper in sight.
  • As a generalisation, it appears that creative midfielders with good dribbling skills and hardworking forwards (who can also score) look the most likely to receive the award.
  • Eden Hazard’s 12 awards was the highest amount ever awarded in a single season by Sky Sports – nine was the previous record, also set by the Belgian and a few others.
  • Papiss Cisse had the highest overall starts to MoTM percentage with 45%, although many of those came via appearances from the bench.
  • Yannick Bolasie, David Silva, Raheem Sterling and Eden Hazard are the only four players to have achieved over five MoTM awards in back-to-back seasons.
  • Sadio Mane and Harry Kane were awarded many MoTM awards in a relatively small window of time suggesting when they hit form they are likely to continue to rack up the five extra points.

AWARDS BY POSITION

Let’s now assess the entire player list broken down by position…

PositionTotal awards% of total MOTMTotal awards (13/14)% of total MOTM (13/14)
Goalkeeper308%236%
Defender5013%5715%
Midfielder19952%19952%
Forward10127%10127%

These stats help to back up our findings in our previous article on formations. The numbers underline that, once again, midfielders come out on top, followed by forwards, then defenders, and, finally, the lowly goalkeeper. In addition, these percentages mirror the previous season’s breakdown by position almost exactly – confirming that there is a trend at play.

LOOKING FORWARD

As MOTM awards are harder to predict than goals or clean sheets, we shouldn’t get too carried away and start picking players on the basis that they are MOTM “darlings”.

However, the allure of the extra five points really comes into its own when you combine it with the captain’s armband: if you’re torn between two candidates in any given Gameweek, then targeting the player a strong track record for the MoTM award is clearly the most sensible route.

Given the data on show, it’s fair to assume that we’re likely to see the trends continue. The top team midfielders, who play a big part in the final third should regularly receive MOTM gongs, along with forwards who not only score goals but put a good shift in, hassling the opposition’s defence.

For the lesser sides, it appears centre forwards are even more likely to receive MoTM if they win their side the points: Jamie Vardy, Danny Ings, Papiss Cisse, Gabriel Agbonlahor, Charlie Austin and Saido Berahino all secured the most MoTM’s for their individual sides last season.

THIS SEASON’S BENEFACTORS

So let’s try to predict a few of the likely benefactors for this season.

The table below lists my view on the key MoTM candidates by team:

TeamPlayer
ArsenalAlexis Sanchez
Aston VillaJack Grealish
BournemouthMatt Ritchie
ChelseaEden Hazard
Crystal PalaceYannick Bolasie
EvertonJames McCarthy/Romelu Lukaku
LeicesterJamie Vardy
LiverpoolPhilippe Coutinho/Jordan Henderson
Man CitySergio Aguero/David Silva
Man UnitedWayne Rooney
NewcastleGeorginio Wijnaldum
NorwichNathan Redmond
SouthamptonSadio Mane
StokeBojan Krkic
SunderlandCostel Pantilimon/Jeremain Lens
SwanseaGylfi Sigurdsson
TottenhamHarry Kane
WatfordTroy Deeney
West BromSaido Berahino
West HamDimitri Payet

Hopefully some of the above will repay my faith, although, with the ever-changing dynamics of the Premier League and the whims of the Sky Sports reporters dictating matters, I’m sure I’ll be reassessing my thinking as the Gameweeks roll by.

As always, I’ll be tracking the allocation of the MoTM awards and offering an updated view in my weekly Sky Sports article each and every Friday.

Just had a look on FISO forums who currently have their weekly captaincy poll, I expected Walcott/Lukaku to be leading, however it's Hazard who's currently on 47% of the votes! Surely Lukaku is a better option this week?

This GW has been a bit of a headache for choosing a captain IMO!

Lukaku is just one big risk...... It's either going to pay off, or leave you stood still with 4 points from your captain.

Hazard at home normally means points......

Debuchy was a PITA last season. Always threatening to come back but then injured again, and again, and again.
I think that it's Bellerin's place to lose.

The big argument to suggest Debuchy would start over him is his defensive qualities. Chelsea is the toughest team out there so using that logic Debuchy would be expected to start. Of course I don't believe it for a minute and Bellerin starting will put that theory to bed.

Is having Jerome at 5.0M as a striker to rotate with Sakho when Sakho has poor fixtures like Arsenal (A) worth it? Not sure if he's rubbish or not.

          My 3-5-2 is
          Butland - Schmeichel
          Huth - Cedric - Mings - Lescott - Wiliams
          Depay - Sterling - Walcott - Hazard - Mane
          Ighalo - Kane - Sakho

If it helps. But if I can find a 0.5 Ighalo can become Wilson

long time lurker, occasional opinion spouter, and now first time member! cant wait to get stuck into the stats this season after always being a very punty fpl player. how about a quick rmt from u guys as a welcome aboard gesture? heres my team ive been settled on for a while with some notes of my thinking.

    kasper schwarzer
    shaw williams francis prodl targett
    hazard walcott mane milner ritchie
    rooney kane sacko

-cheap def. thats how i start each season until spare money becomes available
    - i have gone for the richie/sacko rotation. think it could be very strong
    - i will sign aguero for gw4. current plan - if richie looks a good fpl pick for 6.0 and sacko for 6.5 then mane/walcott>5.0-4.5mid kane>aguero and play the rotation pair each game. if they look poor fpl picks then WC most prob
-roon haz wally are musts for the start imo. i have them
-mane/milner, could i do better? probably. hard to pick these positions. backing these for now
-backing utd def. shaw, darmian or smalling could end up there. 5.5 seems nice price
-like williams from the 5.0 bracket. gd pick?

    thanks for any feedback!

Yeah its a good team and a sound plan. I'm a big fan of a strong front 8 as well and waiting for the ideal cheap mid to reveal themselves. Its also a good way to free up an Aguero fund with downgrades in the early weeks. I'm going with the same strategy myself but I'm also keeping an eye on Ibe who looks likely to start the season on the RW for Liverpool at only 5m. This could solve your Milner issue and could also be used as part of a 3 way rotation with Ritchie and Sacko (1 benched every week).

yh Ibe is interesting and i never realized he fitted well with the ritchie/sacko rotation...and from what ive seen he looks a really gd player.......if wally looks to lose his starting place when sanchez returns, il eye up a wally>ibe kane>aguero switch. nice tip mate thanks

Bear in mind that Targett is only there until Bertrand is fit, so you're talking about a two week punt which may not work out.

Man U's defence isn't very robust so I'm avoiding.

yh my 5th defender as a 4.0 is how i go. its prob not sensible long term and know targett wont last long, but il just play shaw/williams every week, my francis/prodl rotation, and hope it goes well. when aguero is back that extra 0.5 will b very handy. and maybe a gd 4.0 medium term option will stick his head up and il sign him

Looks like you've thought it through and have a very strong squad. 9/10

Smalling looks out of favour anyway. If LVG starts blind at left CB you deffo don't want him, so it's a toss-up between Shaw, Darmian and Jones.

Pedro coming in and also Young has been attracting interest from other clubs. Not a bad time to sell him at 30 with a year left on his contract.

He only played a 4231 because with that formation everyone will get plenty of game time in pre-season. LVG has already said he plans to use a 433 this season

Its possible that Depay could drop a little deeper and still be central in a 433 but I'm not sure how likely that will be. New signings will also dictate matters.

With the current team I'd like to see Herrera come in for Young with Depay on the LW. Herrera and Mata have a very strong understanding and both seem to benefit. I'm just not sure LVG trusts Herrera enough which is a shame.

Gossip of LVG going for Bale! Bale, Pedro - whoever it is, Young has no future at OT. Would get minutes up to end of August at best.

Yep United are definitely looking to get another winger and with LVG's recent comments on Young not being a Neymar I'd expect his time at Old Trafford to be up come the end of August.

Bale will do wonders for United, I hope it happens.

Reading back at it you're right. None the less Young isn't a safe pick due to new arrivals (Pedro) and possibly Herrera starting centrally in a 433 when LVG realises Depay is better off on the left.

Even if they sign Pedro I suspect Young will still start v Spurs. Think LVG values pre-season preparation time and will ease Pedro in seeing as he's a late arrival.

Can't see Herrera starting centrally for a while as he isn't the sort of #10 Van Gaal usually likes. Would probably need the shape to change to a more normal 4-3-3

Yeah I definitely had the normal 433 in mind with regard to Herrera. I do agree that for the first couple of weeks Young is likely to start but there is a good chance he could be sold with new arrivals coming in.

He has also pretty much confirmed how they will line up for the Spurs game bar one or two positions.

Short term, Young is a good pick. Only short term though.

it is fun to watch. there always seems so much space in midfield. can be frantic stuff and yh there is lots of bad defending but also plenty of teams who try to pass in a very progressive way. i like how there is much less diving/ref abuse/general dark arts from the players and the refs seem to let alot go and encourage a physical game. it makes for good viewing......i hope the mls continues to improve

        • 10 Years

Yep, when Euro youth teams come over their coaches don't really compliment the actual play, but admire the way U.S. kids get fouled and get up right away. Not until the MLS level do you see the surrounding of the referee in disputes, and even then nowhere near Europe and of course Mexico.

    I hate the look of:

Well I snagged first pick so got Kun.

        Lloris Adrian
        Bertrand Darmian Mangala Clichy PVA
        Depay Mane Payet Ayew Siggy
        Aguero Diouf Gomis

Few too many swans for my liking but heyo.

Kolarov would be a start 😉 In all honesty I don't think you could ever offer enough for me to lose him.

Every player has a price and besides without captaincy or bonuses, Aguero aint two shades of the fpl player he is

Hi. I would really appreciate someones take on my team.

    Butland

    Ivanovic || Mertesacker || Targett

    Barkley || Walcott || Silva || Sinclair || Chadli

    Rooney || Pelle

Subs: Schmeichel || PvA || Deeney || Wisdom

    And 3.5 in the bank.

    Couple of things I'm wondering.

    # Should I ditch Targett and get another defender?
    # Caz - Walcott - Ozil?? Guess will see today?
    Any other input would help.

    Thanks in advance.

      Few roughies there!

      Yes ditch Targett.
If Wally starts today then I'd back him in.
I'd drop Ivan/Sinclair for Azpi/Bentaleb and upgrade one of Chadli/Barkley.

Targett, Barkley, Sinclair, Wisdom - none guaranteed starters. You might be picking up 0 points or 1 point late subs from them.

You are plAying Butland instead of Schmeichel GW1?
Ditch Targett or you'll regret it in a few weeks when he no longer plays
Don't like 2 cheapie mids ... Spend the 3.5 now and figure out Kun later
Wait and see on Arsenal mids

    Activating all out attack

    Kasper
    Ivan Coleman
    Hazard Wally Ritchie Mane
    Lukaku (c) Rooney pelle

    Wildcard after that

    For my wildcard consideration
    A. Mane + Ritchie or
    B. Ozil/Depay + Mahrez

How about a defence like that???

Pretty good - if you're sure Sakho starts.

I fear Sakho is a massive rotation risk. You underestimate Rodger's ego. Lovren cost the club a lot of money.

How often was Sakho benched last season with Lovren starting ahead of him?

              2.Rodger's memory is bad

I don't trust slurs defense tbh. Mind rating mine:
      Azpil, Cedric, Williams, Huth, saylor
Worried about no arsenal defense tho :/

I'd say that if Saylor nails down a spot then that looks pretty good, Guerrafc.

Difficult to say whether he will, though.
