Sky Sports Analysis – The Man of The Match Awards

In our latest pre-season article on the Sky Sports game, we turn attention to the most arbitrary of scoring methods – the Man of the The Match (MoTM) award.

While it’s often easy to overlook the significance of this accolade, it should be noted that MoTM is worth five points in the Sky Sports game – the same amount as a goal or clean sheet.

As the award is dished out by the Sky Sports match reporter, and can sometimes differ from the televised opinion, it is far more difficult to predict and quantify than likely goals or clean sheets.

Using the last couple of season’s data, however, we can look to highlight certain players and positions and their potential chances of securing future accolades.

TOP OVERALL RECIPIENTS

Let’s take a look at the players who gained five or more MoTM awards last season.

NameStartsMoTMStarts – MOTM %(MoTM 13/14)
Eden Hazard381232%9
Sergio Aguero30827%3
Harry Kane28829%n/a
David Silva32722%6
Yannick Bolasie31723%6
Sadio Mane24625%n/a
Philippe Coutinho32619%2
Alexis Sanchez34618%n/a
Jamie Vardy26623%n/a
Danny Ings35617%n/a
Raheem Sterling34515%5
Stewart Downing37514%2
Papiss Cisse11545%0
Gabriel Agbonlahor30517%2

Here are a few points to note:

  • Seven forwards and midfielders make up the top players here, with not a defender or goalkeeper in sight.
  • As a generalisation, it appears that creative midfielders with good dribbling skills and hardworking forwards (who can also score) look the most likely to receive the award.
  • Eden Hazard’s 12 awards was the highest amount ever awarded in a single season by Sky Sports – nine was the previous record, also set by the Belgian and a few others.
  • Papiss Cisse had the highest overall starts to MoTM percentage with 45%, although many of those came via appearances from the bench.
  • Yannick Bolasie, David Silva, Raheem Sterling and Eden Hazard are the only four players to have achieved over five MoTM awards in back-to-back seasons.
  • Sadio Mane and Harry Kane were awarded many MoTM awards in a relatively small window of time suggesting when they hit form they are likely to continue to rack up the five extra points.

AWARDS BY POSITION

Let’s now assess the entire player list broken down by position…

PositionTotal awards% of total MOTMTotal awards (13/14)% of total MOTM (13/14)
Goalkeeper308%236%
Defender5013%5715%
Midfielder19952%19952%
Forward10127%10127%

These stats help to back up our findings in our previous article on formations. The numbers underline that, once again, midfielders come out on top, followed by forwards, then defenders, and, finally, the lowly goalkeeper. In addition, these percentages mirror the previous season’s breakdown by position almost exactly – confirming that there is a trend at play.

LOOKING FORWARD

As MOTM awards are harder to predict than goals or clean sheets, we shouldn’t get too carried away and start picking players on the basis that they are MOTM “darlings”.

However, the allure of the extra five points really comes into its own when you combine it with the captain’s armband: if you’re torn between two candidates in any given Gameweek, then targeting the player a strong track record for the MoTM award is clearly the most sensible route.

Given the data on show, it’s fair to assume that we’re likely to see the trends continue. The top team midfielders, who play a big part in the final third should regularly receive MOTM gongs, along with forwards who not only score goals but put a good shift in, hassling the opposition’s defence.

For the lesser sides, it appears centre forwards are even more likely to receive MoTM if they win their side the points: Jamie Vardy, Danny Ings, Papiss Cisse, Gabriel Agbonlahor, Charlie Austin and Saido Berahino all secured the most MoTM’s for their individual sides last season.

THIS SEASON’S BENEFACTORS

So let’s try to predict a few of the likely benefactors for this season.

The table below lists my view on the key MoTM candidates by team:

TeamPlayer
ArsenalAlexis Sanchez
Aston VillaJack Grealish
BournemouthMatt Ritchie
ChelseaEden Hazard
Crystal PalaceYannick Bolasie
EvertonJames McCarthy/Romelu Lukaku
LeicesterJamie Vardy
LiverpoolPhilippe Coutinho/Jordan Henderson
Man CitySergio Aguero/David Silva
Man UnitedWayne Rooney
NewcastleGeorginio Wijnaldum
NorwichNathan Redmond
SouthamptonSadio Mane
StokeBojan Krkic
SunderlandCostel Pantilimon/Jeremain Lens
SwanseaGylfi Sigurdsson
TottenhamHarry Kane
WatfordTroy Deeney
West BromSaido Berahino
West HamDimitri Payet

Hopefully some of the above will repay my faith, although, with the ever-changing dynamics of the Premier League and the whims of the Sky Sports reporters dictating matters, I’m sure I’ll be reassessing my thinking as the Gameweeks roll by.

As always, I’ll be tracking the allocation of the MoTM awards and offering an updated view in my weekly Sky Sports article each and every Friday.

If you mean for opening fixtures,

      Pelle
      Giroud
      Lukaku
      Benteke

Longer term Tekkers might gel, Lukaku and Pelle have nasty fixtures upcoming, and Giroud will lose his place to a galactico.

      Week 1, Lukaku. Season-long, Benteke.

Giroud will suffer from rotation and regression. Pelle simply isn't good enough for the price.

Not too much wrong with this Toonzie. I'd recommend you watch the highlights from Man City's game with Stuttgart before you start with Kompany though.

Kompany to Mert for example will allow you to move Saylor to a 4.5

But that's generally less money sitting on the bench. If you're going for 4.5m mids and 5m strikers they'll more likely not be playing half the time.

I just don't see it as an excuse sorry. Benched points is normal in FPL and for a short term plan it can work. Nobody is suggesting here that an attacking rotation will be they way to go all season long. I think its a useful strategy for the 1st month till we get a clearer idea on who the good 4.5/5 mids are

Exactly. It's a short term strategy that spreads funds over 3 spots rather than concentrating them on 2, potentially making it more difficult to miss out on, as you say, the bargain bandwagons.

        2. TJ_777
          • 9 Years

Yes but I go fixture based not h/a based

(I understand u can still leave on bench)

But 4 points because 6-2 = 4 on the bench

For mids and forwards they score more because of baps and goals

          7/8/9/10(mid)-2= 5/6/7/8 on the bench

          6/7/8/9(fwd)-2=4/5/6/7 on the bench

I doubt your rotating defenders will often accumulate bps

Yes but as with defenders, it is possible to have a reasonable idea about games where your attackers will do well, and games where they may not. It's always a calculated risk leaving say Sakho on the bench for Arsenal (away), but you know that Wilson with Villa at home probably has a better chance of bringing in some returns.

        • 9 Years

Not necessarily. With the rotation I've mentioned there is always one fixture quite significantly harder than the other two. I guess it's the same with rotating defenders - always a chance that a team will unexpectedly keep a clean sheet.

Decided no early WC this year. I'm convinced Kun will play gw1 at least some mins. S Hampton fixtures and form too juicy had to have Mane and think Tadic will out score Hendo/Milner first 13 gw by virtue of fixtures and set pieces. Ft on hand if not

I'm planning on starting without Hazard
I'll be hiding behind the sofa most of the time.
      The decision boils down to
Hazard & Ritchie (or other 6.0)

If you had to pick a 5.5 mid as your 4th MID, who would it be?

Mahrez? Good preseason so far and seems to be the focal point in whichever formation Ranieri chooses, also seems like Van Ginkel has been involved heavily in Stokes preseason often times playing one of the 3 attacking mid positions in the 4-2-3-1

Mahrez or McLean. No one seems to be considering McLean. Loving it. He has priors of going on a 5 gw double points haul as well and he will be one of their main creative threats. Really excited about Mahrez as well though, poor man's Silva.

Asked this a few days ago but.....

LVG has essentially confirmed how United will line up v Spurs, like this:

    --------------------------DDG-------------------------
    Darmian - Jones/Smalling - Blind - Shaw
    ----------Schweiny - Carrick/Schneid--------
    Mata-----------------Depay-----------------Young
    ------------------------Rooney------------------------

After tomorrow we will also have a very clear idea of how Arsenal will line up.

Thinking about what Jonty said in the RMT surgery about going for players who don't have too many variables, is there a case for doubling or even tripling up on both Arsenal and United? After all, actually being sure of their starting line up and shape removes a very big variable, doesn't it?

Top teams, good fixtures and a host of potential picks we'll *know* are starting GW1 (and likely beyond). Rooney, Depay, Mata, Darmian, Giroud, Walcott, Ramsey, Ozil, Cazorla etc. I could easily get five strong picks from that list alone without even venturing near riskier options like Young......

Yep. Add in the potential departure of DDG, a new RB adjusting to the team/league and (arguably) their best defender potentially being left on the bench....

Wouldn't invest in their defense from the start.

Yep. I agree. Still a bit concerning Smalling isn't first choice without question. If DDG goes, they're in for a long ride. All the good transfer work so far would count for little.

I have double Arsenal so far, but tripling up on Man U seems extremely risky since their defence is pap. Or do you mean two Man U mids and Rooney? Or an Arsenal defender and two mids?

I'm thinking maybe double United (Rooney + Depay/Mata) and triple Arsenal (Theo, another mid, defender). Very strong and secure base to start your team off with in GW1, I'd have thought.

ADM is good in attack but a liability in defence and in retaining possession. He had one of the worst pass completion percentages in the United team, this is terrible for LVG's filoshofee and its why he was dropped. It hasn't worked and United needed to move on an recoup as much of the 60m fee as possible.

Depay is young and his future appeal is probably greater than his current one. He'll get time on the LW but Herrera could easily usurp him in a central position in a 433.

On the other hand, in Mata and Rooney we have two player with FPL pedigree who will be starting in secure attacking positions after a relatively low score last year due to being either benched or played out of position.

If you back their quality to shine true then they have the potential to be a strong double up....

The only issue I have with tripling up early on is the lack of flexibility within that team. If I have 3 Arsenal without Wally and he then gets off to a flier and appears essential I'd be a little bit stuck.

Would you have three Arsenal players without Wally though? If you are going for three of them then I'd have thought he was an obvious guy to include given that at worst you could either downgrade him or swap him out for Sanchez before too long.

The other mids are all in the same price bracket (along with a lot of strong picks from other sides) so you'd have a fair amount of flexibility there too, no?

Not sure Arsenal lineup is settled - Sanchez will return and they may get a galactico striker.
I think United will get one or two big new signings - a replacement for Young and a proper central defender. And I think DDG will be gone by then.

"After all, actually being sure of their starting line up and shape removes a very big variable, doesn't it" We have a problem here though... I'm not sure we know the Arsenal line up for sure either.

This looks like our strongest 433, imo

            Schweini/Carrick Schneiderlin
            ---------------Herrera-----------
            Mata-------Rooney-------Depay

Not sure this is what we'll end up with though...Looks fantastic but Depay might play in Herrera's position, not sure if that's best for him...

He said they will line up as they have in pre-season. He meant a 4-2-3-1, he just calls that a 4-3-3 for some reason.

    Pantilimon / 4m
    Jenkinson Kolarov Gomez Huth Francis
    Hazard Walcott Chadli Mane 4.5
    Aguero Sakho Wilson

2M in the bank for a rainy day.

Thoughts? If Aguero isn't full fit, Rooney for the first few weeks.

I think the punty picks in Kolarov/Gomez make it look unbalanced. Replace them with Fonte/Oshea

            Pants
            Fonte Jenkinson Huth
            Hazard Mane Sanchez Chadli
            Sakho Aguero Wilson

BR more or less said he's not fazed to start him at Stoke and the team that played earlier on will be close to the one that starts.

I don't think he's nailed but the lb spot is his to lose. One patchy performance and Moreno comes in maybe

I've never tried it before and don't plan to this season either.

Sinclair is as good as benchable every week, but a bit better player than Boydinho who served me well last season.

      Here's letting rip:

I read the philosophy of the triple cheap rotation in defence that you've gone for. To me having Bour/Wat/Nor looks leakier than the Titanic.
Then you've got Sinclair on the back of goals in friendlies - hmm.
So when Cost's inevitably crocked and Wally's on the bench, you're going to be putting out those defenders away to top teams.

      That's my take anyway.

spend some of the 2.0 ITB

      Rooney/9.0> Ag/7.0

get 2 playing rotating keepers for 9.0 Kos> Mert can pay for that.

good options in your squad.IMO GL

The 2.0M in the bank is to upgrade Costa to Aguero when he starts , but it could be used elsewhere.

Rotating goalkeepers has never worked for me, and since Leics will rack up the save points then I'm fine with them.

The defensive rotation is definitely a risk, but fairly easy to swap one of them to another 4.5 when one appears who's solid.

Got Sinclair because he was great for me when he played for Swansea, but your concerns and advice have been noted, and thanks.
