Sky Sports Analysis – The Man of The Match Awards

In our latest pre-season article on the Sky Sports game, we turn attention to the most arbitrary of scoring methods – the Man of the The Match (MoTM) award.

While it’s often easy to overlook the significance of this accolade, it should be noted that MoTM is worth five points in the Sky Sports game – the same amount as a goal or clean sheet.

As the award is dished out by the Sky Sports match reporter, and can sometimes differ from the televised opinion, it is far more difficult to predict and quantify than likely goals or clean sheets.

Using the last couple of season’s data, however, we can look to highlight certain players and positions and their potential chances of securing future accolades.

TOP OVERALL RECIPIENTS

Let’s take a look at the players who gained five or more MoTM awards last season.

NameStartsMoTMStarts – MOTM %(MoTM 13/14)
Eden Hazard381232%9
Sergio Aguero30827%3
Harry Kane28829%n/a
David Silva32722%6
Yannick Bolasie31723%6
Sadio Mane24625%n/a
Philippe Coutinho32619%2
Alexis Sanchez34618%n/a
Jamie Vardy26623%n/a
Danny Ings35617%n/a
Raheem Sterling34515%5
Stewart Downing37514%2
Papiss Cisse11545%0
Gabriel Agbonlahor30517%2

Here are a few points to note:

  • Seven forwards and midfielders make up the top players here, with not a defender or goalkeeper in sight.
  • As a generalisation, it appears that creative midfielders with good dribbling skills and hardworking forwards (who can also score) look the most likely to receive the award.
  • Eden Hazard’s 12 awards was the highest amount ever awarded in a single season by Sky Sports – nine was the previous record, also set by the Belgian and a few others.
  • Papiss Cisse had the highest overall starts to MoTM percentage with 45%, although many of those came via appearances from the bench.
  • Yannick Bolasie, David Silva, Raheem Sterling and Eden Hazard are the only four players to have achieved over five MoTM awards in back-to-back seasons.
  • Sadio Mane and Harry Kane were awarded many MoTM awards in a relatively small window of time suggesting when they hit form they are likely to continue to rack up the five extra points.

AWARDS BY POSITION

Let’s now assess the entire player list broken down by position…

PositionTotal awards% of total MOTMTotal awards (13/14)% of total MOTM (13/14)
Goalkeeper308%236%
Defender5013%5715%
Midfielder19952%19952%
Forward10127%10127%

These stats help to back up our findings in our previous article on formations. The numbers underline that, once again, midfielders come out on top, followed by forwards, then defenders, and, finally, the lowly goalkeeper. In addition, these percentages mirror the previous season’s breakdown by position almost exactly – confirming that there is a trend at play.

LOOKING FORWARD

As MOTM awards are harder to predict than goals or clean sheets, we shouldn’t get too carried away and start picking players on the basis that they are MOTM “darlings”.

However, the allure of the extra five points really comes into its own when you combine it with the captain’s armband: if you’re torn between two candidates in any given Gameweek, then targeting the player a strong track record for the MoTM award is clearly the most sensible route.

Given the data on show, it’s fair to assume that we’re likely to see the trends continue. The top team midfielders, who play a big part in the final third should regularly receive MOTM gongs, along with forwards who not only score goals but put a good shift in, hassling the opposition’s defence.

For the lesser sides, it appears centre forwards are even more likely to receive MoTM if they win their side the points: Jamie Vardy, Danny Ings, Papiss Cisse, Gabriel Agbonlahor, Charlie Austin and Saido Berahino all secured the most MoTM’s for their individual sides last season.

THIS SEASON’S BENEFACTORS

So let’s try to predict a few of the likely benefactors for this season.

The table below lists my view on the key MoTM candidates by team:

TeamPlayer
ArsenalAlexis Sanchez
Aston VillaJack Grealish
BournemouthMatt Ritchie
ChelseaEden Hazard
Crystal PalaceYannick Bolasie
EvertonJames McCarthy/Romelu Lukaku
LeicesterJamie Vardy
LiverpoolPhilippe Coutinho/Jordan Henderson
Man CitySergio Aguero/David Silva
Man UnitedWayne Rooney
NewcastleGeorginio Wijnaldum
NorwichNathan Redmond
SouthamptonSadio Mane
StokeBojan Krkic
SunderlandCostel Pantilimon/Jeremain Lens
SwanseaGylfi Sigurdsson
TottenhamHarry Kane
WatfordTroy Deeney
West BromSaido Berahino
West HamDimitri Payet

Hopefully some of the above will repay my faith, although, with the ever-changing dynamics of the Premier League and the whims of the Sky Sports reporters dictating matters, I’m sure I’ll be reassessing my thinking as the Gameweeks roll by.

As always, I’ll be tracking the allocation of the MoTM awards and offering an updated view in my weekly Sky Sports article each and every Friday.

I like the team for the most part but personally I wouldn't go starting with 2 in the bank. Find another way to remove players and get in Aguero. Upgrade one of your defs and one of your mids.

    Schemichel / Fabianski
    Azpi / Kosc / Mings / Bassong / Angella
    Sterling / Haz / Ozil / Chadli / Ki
    Sakho / Rooney / Berahino

This is my 4th draft and by no means my actual team (my first draft got rated 13/15 with an 'A' grade!)

Thought I'd see what thoughts were considering Berahino isn't a popular pick

I like the Berahino pick personally.

Good keepers. Not sure on Bassong and Angella though. Ki as a fifth mid could lead to a lot of bench points. Strong team.

      1. Chris Finch - squeal piggy …
        • 13 Years

The Ki is my biggest concern with that draft. I looked at Jedinak and Mahrez as punts for the fifth spot. Might be too risky though

Don't mind the Berahino pick, it's just WBA's opening fixtures are awful...maybe monitor him and consider picking him up after GW4 or so? Also think there is a risk of a slight price drop owning him for the first couple GWs if he blanks.

Good team, I prefer Milner to Chadli but thats just personal preference

You lol all you like. If Debuchy nails down he's spot he'll be the best value defender this season. Scott Dann is a goal machine (relatively speaking) and you can expect them to have a decent season under Pardew.

I'm an Arsenal fan. Bellerin is ahead of Debuchy.

Pardew and Palace play attacking football. I would expect 4.5s like Huth to outscore Dann.

Also Bellerin is a liability in the air, a well known fact. Debuchy is an accomplished international who was ahead of Bellerin before Arnautavic assaulted him. Every chance he takes his place back. Has had an excellent preseason by all accounts also.

I thought the answer was a joke, too.
Debuchy is not nailed. And even if he was, would you really put him ahead of everyone else mentioned here?
As for Dann, palace had all of 2cs under Pardew last year. Even if they do find some defensive form, the rest of Palace's defence is better value at 4.5m.

            1. Touré De Force
              • 13 Years

Yes I would put him ahead of a lot of them given Arsenal's opening run of fixtures. Also Scott Dann had 4 goals and 2 assists last season, we'll ahead of all CP defenders and indeed many defenders from other teams at his price as well. Pardew took them over mid season. He'll tighten them up now he's had time to work with them.

Fifth mid pick (mostly for bench/injuries):

A - Ki - bonus points, goals, too many points lost on bench?
B - Mahrez - highly priced for a LEI mid

yep! would understand it more if you had Ivan in there, but benching at least 9.5 million in defense if you're playing 3 at the back is too much. Creswell > 4.5 and Azpi > Ivan is better if you want to spend that much in defense.

        That's a thought.
I'm not fixed on the 3-at-the-back template. I see more baps in defence and more goals in midfield this season compared to the past.

To be frank I'm not sure about your goalie picks... As you have already said, you have gone expensive at the back, your defs are: 6, 5.5, 5.5, 5, 4.5 the only problem with this is if you somehow need to free up some cash then you may need to downgrade two of your defs... What I would suggest is if you want to spend more on defence, get one biggie instead... So that when you need cash you can get it by using one transfer. In other areas I like your team!

Hmm, it looks weaker. Getting Ivan forces me into a 4/4.5 defender, none of which I like.

Okay, Just upgraded Azpi to Ivan and ditched Cressy for 4.0 NP Burke with the keepers now Steklenburg/Schmeichel

Question - how much do you consider "too much" to be on your bench/is there an optimal range the value of your bench should fit into? (Including GK, in a normal gameweek through rotation rather than injuries)

The minimum is 16.5... 4.0 GK & 2x 4.0 defs + 4.5 mid, but this is very risky, even though it potentially frees up an extra million or two
Mine is currently 18.5... 4.0 GK & wx 5.0 defs + 4.5 mid, and will vary between 17.5-18.5 depending on which two defs rotate

    1. Beautiful Game

It depends whether you are rotating. If not, then the bench fodder can be as cheap as possible (my 5th midfielder will be 4.5, many have a non-playing 4.0 backup keeper). If you are rotating, then it is normal to have more on the bench for any given week.

yup have definitely decided to drop one of Azpi/Kosc. Currently dropping Azpi, but seems abit odd.

I do think Arsenal's defence will see a big improvement this season though.

Same thing going on my mind. Thinking Kos will get the chop, but Ivan most likely will stay.

Definitely. Cech-effect. Whether we can value in other defense is the story here.

      B. It depends what you do with the funds that are saved. Out of principle, I avoid defenders over 5.0, so you won't be alone.

Yeah, what I can do with the funds is the key here. I'd love some money itb for flexibility too.

No >5.0 def? Make sure you save some money in case any 5.5 or more defender gets into gear. You wouldn't want to miss the wagon

Lol. My defence is Azpi, Cedric, PvA, Jenkinson and Bassong currently so I could maybe find the 0.5 for Bellerin if he starts. But I think there is a lot of value in the 5.0 options 🙂

    Hi.

Would love an opinion on this lineup and any thoughts for improving it.
    Playing 3-5-2

    GK: Butland (Myhill)
    DEF: Cedric---Azpilicueta--Alderweireld (Huth--Baker)
    MID: Hazard---Sterling---Depay---Cazorla---Ibe
    FWD: Rooney---Pelle (Deeney)

I'm not sure, he has been starting and playing well through pre-season, I just don't have any spare money and given he is only 5.0m seems to have a lot of upsides. If he doesn't play then Deeney will come in and it will be 3-4-3. Can you suggest a change?

I could offload Cazorla for Chadli and replace Cedric with Koscielny, to keep Arsenal in my team. Then use spare 0.5m to get Ki-Sung Yueng for Ibe?

Bellerin and Ozil. Both must feature prominently if they are to confirm their spots on my team.

Costa needs to also show me why he's worth 11m and if Fabregas will prove better value than Hazard.
