Sky Sports Analysis – The Man of The Match Awards

In our latest pre-season article on the Sky Sports game, we turn attention to the most arbitrary of scoring methods – the Man of the The Match (MoTM) award.

While it’s often easy to overlook the significance of this accolade, it should be noted that MoTM is worth five points in the Sky Sports game – the same amount as a goal or clean sheet.

As the award is dished out by the Sky Sports match reporter, and can sometimes differ from the televised opinion, it is far more difficult to predict and quantify than likely goals or clean sheets.

Using the last couple of season’s data, however, we can look to highlight certain players and positions and their potential chances of securing future accolades.

TOP OVERALL RECIPIENTS

Let’s take a look at the players who gained five or more MoTM awards last season.

NameStartsMoTMStarts – MOTM %(MoTM 13/14)
Eden Hazard381232%9
Sergio Aguero30827%3
Harry Kane28829%n/a
David Silva32722%6
Yannick Bolasie31723%6
Sadio Mane24625%n/a
Philippe Coutinho32619%2
Alexis Sanchez34618%n/a
Jamie Vardy26623%n/a
Danny Ings35617%n/a
Raheem Sterling34515%5
Stewart Downing37514%2
Papiss Cisse11545%0
Gabriel Agbonlahor30517%2

Here are a few points to note:

  • Seven forwards and midfielders make up the top players here, with not a defender or goalkeeper in sight.
  • As a generalisation, it appears that creative midfielders with good dribbling skills and hardworking forwards (who can also score) look the most likely to receive the award.
  • Eden Hazard’s 12 awards was the highest amount ever awarded in a single season by Sky Sports – nine was the previous record, also set by the Belgian and a few others.
  • Papiss Cisse had the highest overall starts to MoTM percentage with 45%, although many of those came via appearances from the bench.
  • Yannick Bolasie, David Silva, Raheem Sterling and Eden Hazard are the only four players to have achieved over five MoTM awards in back-to-back seasons.
  • Sadio Mane and Harry Kane were awarded many MoTM awards in a relatively small window of time suggesting when they hit form they are likely to continue to rack up the five extra points.

AWARDS BY POSITION

Let’s now assess the entire player list broken down by position…

PositionTotal awards% of total MOTMTotal awards (13/14)% of total MOTM (13/14)
Goalkeeper308%236%
Defender5013%5715%
Midfielder19952%19952%
Forward10127%10127%

These stats help to back up our findings in our previous article on formations. The numbers underline that, once again, midfielders come out on top, followed by forwards, then defenders, and, finally, the lowly goalkeeper. In addition, these percentages mirror the previous season’s breakdown by position almost exactly – confirming that there is a trend at play.

LOOKING FORWARD

As MOTM awards are harder to predict than goals or clean sheets, we shouldn’t get too carried away and start picking players on the basis that they are MOTM “darlings”.

However, the allure of the extra five points really comes into its own when you combine it with the captain’s armband: if you’re torn between two candidates in any given Gameweek, then targeting the player a strong track record for the MoTM award is clearly the most sensible route.

Given the data on show, it’s fair to assume that we’re likely to see the trends continue. The top team midfielders, who play a big part in the final third should regularly receive MOTM gongs, along with forwards who not only score goals but put a good shift in, hassling the opposition’s defence.

For the lesser sides, it appears centre forwards are even more likely to receive MoTM if they win their side the points: Jamie Vardy, Danny Ings, Papiss Cisse, Gabriel Agbonlahor, Charlie Austin and Saido Berahino all secured the most MoTM’s for their individual sides last season.

THIS SEASON’S BENEFACTORS

So let’s try to predict a few of the likely benefactors for this season.

The table below lists my view on the key MoTM candidates by team:

TeamPlayer
ArsenalAlexis Sanchez
Aston VillaJack Grealish
BournemouthMatt Ritchie
ChelseaEden Hazard
Crystal PalaceYannick Bolasie
EvertonJames McCarthy/Romelu Lukaku
LeicesterJamie Vardy
LiverpoolPhilippe Coutinho/Jordan Henderson
Man CitySergio Aguero/David Silva
Man UnitedWayne Rooney
NewcastleGeorginio Wijnaldum
NorwichNathan Redmond
SouthamptonSadio Mane
StokeBojan Krkic
SunderlandCostel Pantilimon/Jeremain Lens
SwanseaGylfi Sigurdsson
TottenhamHarry Kane
WatfordTroy Deeney
West BromSaido Berahino
West HamDimitri Payet

Hopefully some of the above will repay my faith, although, with the ever-changing dynamics of the Premier League and the whims of the Sky Sports reporters dictating matters, I’m sure I’ll be reassessing my thinking as the Gameweeks roll by.

As always, I’ll be tracking the allocation of the MoTM awards and offering an updated view in my weekly Sky Sports article each and every Friday.

I think I've decided to go without West Ham players. This is a big call with sakho and cresswell offering such great value. Here's the thing, I think their injuries, hard Pre season and recent poor form means they won't start well.
I can see them shipping 4 goals to arsenal week one.
"Ah" I hear you cry, "what about their next two matches?".

Well, you're right, you're not going to sell before such a run. I've a feeling LEI will beat them, as they recover from the poor ars match. Then, you only have a plucky BOU before liv.

Essentially I have convinced myself that west ham's ticker is various shades of red.

This is of course one mans opinion and Botha more, but given that many are planning an early wildcard, I wonder is WHM investment is wise?
Someone talk me out of it. After all, look at the value!

I won't talk you out of it. I toyed with Cresswell and Jenks along with Payet before coming to a similar conclusion. I'm keeping Sakho though for the price.

He is tempting, but some are packing their team with 3 hammers and will need to play 2 of them regularly. Fixtures look o-Kay but form is terrible!

They tend to share the points around quite a lot too.

That's pretty bold! I can see LEI turning over the hammers mainly due to poor form, but don't know what their defence will be like under the tinker man

I am thinking only about Sakho because of the uncertainty of the low priced forwards
At 6.5 it gives you space to downgrade to Wilson or Deeney if they hit the ground running or even Mitrovic / Bamford.

but if you're planning on playing 4-3-3 then you won't downgrade before Weeks 1 and 2, as you won't expect them to do anything against arsenal.

Well, if they beat arsenal then it's easy to jump in the bandwagon.

But some people are taking on 2 or 3 hammers in their team- I think they will regret this as will want to sell after arsenal match, but won't want to cut their losses before a seemingly kind run

Ibe played 90 minutes for Liverpool yesterday, anyone see the game or know if he played well? What's BR's thoughts on him for the season? Him and Sinclair have made that 5th Mid 4.5/5.0 slot very interesting at least.

Obviously, then put him in for GW2 and he has a stinker, such is FPL life. At least if he does get a goal, and assist and 3 baps, everyone will jump on him and his price will rise. Small victories ha!

Safe 5th mid option - Mahrez

Rodgers will tinker the Liverpool attack a bit. He will play a lot more than last year though.

Surely if he does play GW and has a good game it is his spot to lose? I would worry about his game time but I think BR's has a sweet spot for him and I think see's him as a sterling-esque replacement.

And he needs to be managed like Sterling was, on the pitch. I mean start for a good few games weeks so his price escalates, then drop him just as a bunch of waggoners hop aboard, so I can sell at top dollah!

I agree! win/win, worst case scenario is that he doesn't get any time on the pitch, or he bombs out, and I waste a FT getting in a guaranteed starting 4.5/5.0 - I can live with that risk.

Who will score more points to start the season, Fabregas or Sterling?

Fabregas first 5 games: SWA, mci, wba, CRY, eve
Sterling first 5 games: wba, CHE, eve, WAT, cry

Between them 2 for the final spot in my team. (Or I could go with Yaya and upgrade my 4.0 5th defender)

I don't get why people think that. Bony/Dzeko is Citys 2nd striker. Sterling's position won't get effected with or without Aguero.

Yes, but that was not my point. Dzeko was on the Australian tour but Pellegrini played Sterling ahead of him as Dzeko didn't appear to give a rat's! Hence there is no reason to believe Sterling's position will be influenced by the availability of Aguero, as Bony will be fit to start.

    Panti / 4
    Azpi - Mertesaker - Gomez (Huth/Targett)
    Fab - Walcott - Sterling - Mane - Henderson
    Rooney - Lukaku (Deeney)

0.5 itb for Lukaku to Benteke after GW1

Gomez to take Liverpool left back spot, becoming the best 4.5. Quite likely to bottle this and go for a more recognised 4.5 option though!

It's only about the points from the people you have in your lineup. Unless you are planning on playing five at the back each week, some of them are going to be wasted money on the bench.

Thoughts on Mulumbu as a 4.5 5th mid?

Hmm, the comments there make it look like he is nailed. Err, the injury probably means it's better to go with someone safer like Fletcher 🙁

I'm actually not 100% sure he's nailed. But he's just as attacking as the other 4.5s (not very much).

I see you posting a lot about 4.5s but the main thing should be that they are 100% nailed, you'll probably only need them once or twice over the course of the season so it's highly unlikely you'll get returns from them, as long as you know you'll get 2-3 points then that's all you need.

Yeah, I'm trying to be ambitious and find a 4.5 mid with some attacking potential 😛

Doos thinks that he is the best 4.5 mid available. But I will probably bottle it and start the season with Fletcher 🙁

First one of those RMTs I've ever done

    Butland - Ruddy
    Ivanovic - Clyne - Huth - Prödl - Cedric
    Mane - Hazard - Walcott - Sinclair - Mahrez
    Wilson - Rooney - Kane

Trusting perhaps my own instinct more than statistical numbers for this team compared to others.
From what I've seen Spurs' side is still very much Kane-centric so he is bound to get points. Mahrez and Sinclair are the pre-season based risky picks of low-percentage players who's sole purpose is to make me money to spend on better players in a month or 2.

I don't like Rooney, at all for that matter. Mainly he is a safety pick so I don't lose too many points if he gets lucky first few weeks. He will be traded for Agüero or downgraded for Sterling/Silva soon.

Nice! Although I wouldn't be a fan of either Clyne or Wilson... so my recommendation imo would be to Clyne >4.5 & Wilson to Sakho/Lambert/Ade(if he goes to Villa)

Also wouldn't be dying baout Harry Kane at 9.5, but that's probably my own blind spot & one I could regret if he bags a brace v utd!

Liking the sinclair & Mahrez shouts... I have a 5.5m mid slot that I can't nail down to complete my own team... at the minute it's Brady but it has been both Sinclair/Mahrez/Albright/Jedi at different times! Some will also argue you should downgrade either sinclair or mahrez to a 4.5 & upgrade the other to a 6.0... its much of a muchness as imo you need a cheap starting midfielder

I've found it difficult to find 4.5's... but if you can stretch to 2x 5.0's & 2x 4.5's the options become a lot better. PVA & Jenkinson for example have great fixs GW2 & GW3.. they rotate really well with a Bournmouth 4.5 (great fixs GW1 & GW4) and then either Leicster/Villa etc who have good GW1/GW4. Then pair those 4 up with Ivan or Azpi along with a cheap GK is the way I'm going

A the moment, I have both Hazard and Pelle although I'm looking forward to seeing what Fab contributes to the game today. Fab traditionally is great in early part of the season before dropping off the radar whilst Hazard takes a little time to get going. With over 50% ownership, I'm not sure how much hazards price would price if he got started early whilst fab's would rocket thus ensuring I could switch to Hazard when it became clear he was once again along with Aguero the 2 players every team must have. Welcome your thoughts

I suppose it's easier to think about bringing Sanchez in because his price is lower, there is also the fact that there are a few good options in Arsenal's midfield:

      Walcott
      Ozil
      Cazorla

Whilst Aguero is the main man at City and perhaps the only striker in the game you can count on scoring big.

I agree, however I think that Walcott and giroud will reduce each other's game time and the arsenal midfield is subject to rotation other than Sanchez.

Gomez now looks likely to start the season as Liverpools left back, not sure how long that will last though but he has been very impressive and as Rodgers proved with Flanagan he will throw a youngster in there if he impresses.

Probably Coates, yeah, though hard to be sure.

Toss of a coin between Milner and Henderson, both better than Chadli I would say.

Defence is pretty good though O'Shea might be benched as Sunderland bought Kaboul and Coates might also be ahead of him in pecking order. I don't like Spurs defenders but that is just my opinion. I'd rather take Jenkinson for 5,0 and Kaboul for Sunderland coverage.

Midfield is nice. Hazard will score lot of points as will Walcott if he can start games. Henderson might play little deeper role if he is handed double pivot role with Milner. If Rodgers decides to play 4-3-3 with Hendo, Milner & Can in the middle Henderson will score more points thanks to more advanced role. Ritchie is a bit gamble but ut's worth the risk

Attackers are also good. I can see those players score a lot of goals but there are also another good options like Kane, Sakho and obviously Agüero.
