Captain Sensible – Gameweek 1

Our pre-Gameweek members article returns this evening as we count down the hours until the 2015/16 Premier League campaign gets underway. As always, we take a three-part approach – the first section will be free for all visitors to the site and will analyse the chief protagonists in our Gameweek Captain Poll, though the latter two parts will be members-only, as we delve deeper into the Opta and Rate My Team projections.

The Captain Poll

Eden Hazard and Wayne Rooney are running neck-and-neck at the summit of the Captain’s Poll, with both earning 29% of the votes cast so far. The Chelsea winger served up a timely reminder of his world-class talent against Barcelona last week, slaloming through a cluster of challenges with balletic poise, before executing a precise finish into the bottom corner. Hazard – who currently resides in over 57% of teams in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game – drew just 16 blanks in 38 outings last term, furnishing Fantasy managers with a stable pick in an otherwise unpredictable opening Gameweek. The fact that Diego Costa is still uncertain to feature due to a hamstring injury for Swansea City’s visit hasn’t deterred 2% of voters from backing the Spain international. Both Blues recruits will fancy their chances against a side they rattled nine past last season, with the corresponding fixture ending in a 4-2 victory for the champions.

Rooney, meanwhile, boasts the second-highest ownership (39%) of any forward. With Robin van Persie and Radamel Falcao leaving for pastures new, the Red Devils marksman has been reinstated in his favoured centre forward berth, which could engender a revival of his big-hitting exploits for the visit of Tottenham tomorrow lunchtime. Elsewhere in United’s camp, 2% of our voters are taking a punt on Dutch starlet Memphis Depay, who underlined his finishing prowess in the Eredivisie with 22 strikes in 30 outings and has been fielded in “the hole” behind Rooney in recent matches.

Theo Walcott – who netted twice in pre-season – sits in bronze medal position with over 10% of voters bestowing him the armband. Beset with injuries over the past two campaigns, the Gunners’ jet-heeled forward looks primed for a start up front against a West Ham United unit that conceded the third-most shots inside the box on the road last term. Despite Walcott attracting the bulk of the attention in north London, Mesut Ozil (2%), Santi Cazorla (1%) and Aaron Ramsey (0.8%) all harbour the attacking potential to emerge as real captaincy differentials.

Scanning further down the list, Romelu Lukaku’s pre-season form (four goals, including a hat-trick) has encouraged 5% of voters to captain the imposing frontman when the Toffees play host to Watford, though it remains to be seen if he’ll shrug off a hamstring concern in time. Christian Benteke rounds off the top five with 4% of the votes cast. The Reds will be out for revenge after being humiliated 6-1 on the final day of the previous season, with their forward contingent doubtless buoyed by the absence of Potters stalwart Ryan Shawcross.

Meanwhile, Southampton embark on a trip to Newcastle United in Gameweek 1, yet Graziano Pelle and Sadio Mane are peripheral figures in our poll. Given that the Magpies were joint-bottom for goals conceded at home (27) in the previous campaign, the Saints duo could be surprise gems, yet only 1% are prepared to hand them the armband so far.

Think iv got my team sorted, opinions guys??

    Ruddy

    Ivanovic/ Mertesaker/ Huth

    Hazard(c)/ Walcott/ Ritchie/ Mane

    Rooney/ Benteke/ Jerome

(Butland/ Francis/ Coates/ Wanyama)...... 2.0 in the bank for security after I see any of my players not regular starters and for Aguero and Sanchez for future.

Thanks in advance (ps Jerome great fixtures and hoping he can snatch me some lucky points in the short term)..

Hi guys, just want some opinions on this team...

    Ruddy Butland
    Azpi Mert Huth Francis O'Shea
    Hazard Ozil Mane Chadli Ritchie
    Rooney Benteke Vardy

Feel like i have perhaps spread the money too much, not sure if rotating Vardy/Ritchie is a good option due to leaving 6mil on the bench every week. If there are any tweaks you would do to improve this team I would love to hear your opinions.

    Looking at the 5.0m Defenders

    I Currently have:
    Hennessy, Azpi, Mert

Not sure about Hennessy vs McCarthy and ideally I want two rotating Goalkeepers. Thinking about changing it to:

    Ruddy, Jenkinson, Kos

Reasoning behind Jenkinson is that I won't be playing him in the first game, but his run of home fixtures is good. Also, no Europa League.
He is nailed on isn't he? I can't think of a better 5.0m Def atm

    RMT Please!

    Schmeichel -- (Guzan)
    Azpilicueta - Mertesacker - Gomez -- (Richards - O'Shea)
    Mane - Henderson - Sterling - Hazard -- (Matic)
    Rooney - Kane - Defoe

Swap Coates for O'Shea. Coates is more nailed on. Plus start him ahead of Gomez. Sunderland have a much better chance of keeping a clean sheet than Liverpool.

      Personally, l would:

      (1) Downgrade Azpilicueta to a 5m - probably Cedric
      (2) Upgrade Matic to Ritchie - Matic doesn't score or get you assists and Ritchie has good fixtures and is on all corners and free-kicks
      (3) Change Defoe to Deeney. Deeney is on penalties and rotates brilliantly with Ritchie. I found this out because l just watched an hour YouTube stream with 2 previous fantasy football winners, including the reigning champion.

Bar injury I think this the only time this season you will see Aguero ownership as low as 12.5%. It makes it les of a risk if you decide to go without.

Ive had him in my team all pre season. Think I'm going to downgrade to benteke and keep the money in the bank for an easy upgrade. Bentekes ownership scares me

Kun only has 12.5% ownership, if he plays on Monday his price will rocket ,and those planning to bring in him in for GW3 will be paying over the odds.

This is tough. Cant settle on a team. Thoughts, Opinions on the following.

    Cech(Hennessy)
    Azpi, Jags, Huth (Coates, Targett)
    Haz, Sterling, Mane, Ozil (Surman)
    Jerome, Rooney(C), Benteke

Did have Fabs instead of Haz and Hendo instead of surman with a non playing 4.5 striker instead of Jerome but Jeromes pre season form and kind fixtures want me to take a punt on him.

    Any input would be appreciated.

    Thanks and good luck.

I wouldn't play Wanayama, I'd only bench. If you're playing him then you are probably investing too much elsewhere

For that sole reason I'd rather go for B, decent fixtures but im ditching Ritchie muself for now to plug Chadli in.

I'm voting for Mané for now (dont like to waste the spot on Hendo or depay or something like that just yet) but would be easier to say if the whole teams would be posted. Might be gone to sleep tho 🙂

I'm personally going for Mané and tagging Chadli along with depay, Rooney and Tekkers on top.
