Scout Scribbles – FA Reject Courtois Appeal

The FA dismiss Chelsea’s appeal over Thibaut Courtois’ weekend red card. Kevin Mirallas remains a doubt for Everton, Jack Grealish is set to miss out for Villa again, whilst Newcastle due Remy Cabella and Paul Dummett return to training.

Courtois Appeal Fails

Chelsea are set to be without their first-choice keeper, Thibaut Courtois, for the weekend trip to City, after unsuccessfully appealing the keeper’s weekend dismissal against Swansea.

The Scout Says: There’s no real surprise with the FA’s decision, which should afford Asmir Begovic his first league start for the champions on Sunday afternoon. Chelsea’s unusually porous display against the Swans may persuade owners of their defenders to move them to the bench for the Etihad showdown. Granted, Jose Mourinho’s men have a knack of shutting up shop on these occasions but they seemed decidedly sluggish at the back last weekend and with City looking slick against West Brom on Monday evening, the chances of a clean sheet for the champions, is, for once, debatable.

Mixed News for Toffees

Roberto Martinez expects Gerard Deulofeu and Muhamed Besic to return to the matchday squad this weekend, while Kevin Mirallas is touch-and-go for the Southampton clash after sustaining an ankle injury against Watford:

“Gerard Deulofeu and Mo Besic are very close and it’s about getting them back to their best possible level. Physically we need giving them that introduction but they are close to making the squad for the weekend. Over the [last] weekend we picked up a worrying knock on Kevin Mirallas. He’s got a bit of a swollen ankle but I’m quite positive in Kevin being fit, even though as it stands now we are going to check and assess him for the weekend. It was a very dangerous challenge and if you review the action, he was very fortunate to escape with no major injury.”

The Scout Says: While the return of Deulofeu and Besic affords Martinez more options off the bench, Mirallas’ injury status is of more interest to Fantasy managers. The Belgian winger – whom we tipped as a Differential last Gameweek – excited us with his goal frequency last term (one every 213.7 minutes), given that Alexis Sanchez (192.4) and Sadio Mane (204.3) were the only regular midfield starters to post superior figures. In saying that, Everton’s dire schedule – which pits them against all of last year’s top eight in the next nine Gameweeks – should ensure most steer clear for now.

Midfield Woe for Villa

Jack Grealish and Carles Gil are recovering well from their respective injuries, but Tim Sherwood is unlikely to risk the pair when Villa play host to Manchester United on Friday:

“Jack and Carles are still out injured. Once we get everyone fit and fighting for places, it gives us a lot of options to play different ways, which will be crucial. Jack and Carles are training. They have had a few training sessions. But we don’t want to push them back too early because they’ve had soft tissue injuries. We don’t want them to reoccur.”

The Scout Says: Despite emerging from the opening Gameweek with a victory under their belt, Villa managed just seven attempts on goal at Bournemouth last weekend. The return of Grealish, in particular, should help the Villains improve in that regard, and place question marks over Scott Sinclair’s role on the left. Sherwood set his side up in a 4-3-3 last weekend and, with big-money signing Jordan Ayew handed the right flank role; it remains to be seen whether Sinclair can remain at the top of the pecking order for long – all the more so given that the Villa boss has also been heavily linked with a move for Barcelona wide man Adama Traore. With some decent fixtures to follow the United match (cry, SUN, lei, WBA), those looking for a budget option could consider Ashley Westwood (4.5), who provided the assist for Rudy Gestede’s weekend winner.

Clasie remains doubtful for Saints

Jordy Clasie ramped up his rehabilitation from a hamstring injury with a run-out for the Southampton U21s on Monday but was forced off with a fresh knock just after the break.

The Scout Says: With Clasie looking uncertain to feature at home to Everton, Steven Davis looks likely to earn another start alongside Victor Wanyama in the double pivot. Although he’s better known for his metronomic passing than his defensive capabilities, no midfielder tallied more interceptions than Davis (five) in Gameweek 1, suggesting he’s an able stand-in for Clasie. That’s positive news for those managers who sourced Saints defensive coverage in light of the south coast club racking up 11 home clean sheets last term. With showdowns against just three of last year’s top seven in the next 12 Gameweeks, the Saints defence remains a likely source of defensive points, despite conceding twice at Newcastle last Sunday.

Cabella and Dummett step up fitness

Steve McClaren revealed that Paul Dummett and Remy Cabella are set to return to full training this week, though Emmanuele Riviere could be forced to undergo surgery on an ongoing knee problem.

The Scout Says: Considering that Riviere mustered just one goal and assist across 23 outings in the previous campaign, it’s safe to suggest that his absence wouldn’t be felt on the Fantasy scene. Cabella (6.5) carded a similarly underwhelming attacking output last term (one goal and two assists), yet his underlying statistics hint towards latent potential: only Moussa Sissoko (44) engineered more shooting opportunities (43) among the Toon midfield, while his key pass frequency (one every 55.4 minutes) bested the likes of Jack Colback (74.9) and Sissoko (74). Given that McClaren fielded Gabriel Obertan on the left last weekend, Cabella will be hoping to force his way into the Magpies’ plans after last year’s disappointment. Dummett’s imminent return should see him vie with Massadio Haidara for the left-back berth, though the latter, like Obertan, strengthened his claim for a regular role by supplying an assist against the Saints last weekend.

Looks like FFF came pretty close with two out of three of the risers, Darmian was at 60+%.

Fiso seems pretty off, it ha10 or 11 risers. Can't remember TFL.

On the contrary several players were below par in the Swansea game. I don't know if it is only a fitness issue. So I really doubt Chelsea's ability to play a backs to the wall style in this game.

Before getting rid of Walcott, consider two things:

    1. Why you want to get rid of him

    2. Why he was in your initial team

    1. You're scared of a price drop which is completely understandable. He isn't "nailed on" which can be concern. I used the quotes with "nailed on" because Walcott's capable of scoring and assisting when getting subbed in with only 20 minutes to go.

    2. As I'm sure you already know since he's in your team, Walcott is statistically the most explosive MIDs you have to offer. He's also the 3rd most of all players just behind Aguero and Sturridge
    http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2015/07/15/fantasy-footballs-best-all-round-attackers/

Walcott's price won't be 9.0 at the end of the season...

    It'll be higher.

      • 9 Years

I knew I took a risk when I picked him, BUT the 9.0m price tag enabled me to downgrade him to some cheaper midfielder who adapts well to PL for example (Payet, Ayew etc.) Wally can be a frustrating FPL player, but quite high reward player too.

I Think the concern is Arsenal will stutter till Wenger sorts out the formation issues. Happened last season also when he tried to shoehorn too many AMs into the team. They were too predictable against West Ham and one paced.

I am worried that the squad has changed significantly since he last had an extended run in the team. Now team has to play to strengths of Ozil and Alexis and Walcott is a bit part player in this scheme IMO. Unless wenger gives him a run at the CF role and he makes a good fist of it.

This game is all about catching the wave at the right time though.

Alot (like myself) would have brought in Walcott for the West Ham game, thinking a) he would start without sanchez around b) arsenal would score 3-4 goals as is traditional with the home fixture

With the likes of payet, mane, swans midfield all having good fixtures, it's time to make a decision.

I'm skeptical that his price is gonna drop before Friday, nobody's moved yet and he's nowhere near dropping on either fplstatistics or FFF

I have him, and I'll keep him. If he's on the bench this weekend then maybe he'll have to move on (Kun's coming) but one benching hardly makes a disaster.

I don't have him but if I did I'd hold for one more week. That said, you can't spend £9.0 on a player who isn't guaranteed more than 50% game time especially when Hazard, Sanchez and Aguero costing so much this year.

Again, another good post for you. Well done

Yeah he's THAT explosive. Last season during ARS' DGW37 everyone loaded up the other ARS mids but he turned the best FPL scorer with that goal at Old Trafford - coming off the bench! And I don't need to mention his beastly mode in GW38 🙂

However if he continues to get limited minutes, it'll be a wary for us owners. Wenger might continue to deploy him only when the gaffer need his pace upfront. And you'll start to wonder if other nailed-on options can give you better return at even better prices hence more value.

He's good and proven enough to stay in my team for now - but I think in terms of value I might have to look elsewhere later on, especially when I WC.

Ayew averaged a little over 8 goals and 2 assists in Ligue 1. Unless you believe Swansea is astronomically better than Marseille, he'll get less than this consider the Premier League is a bit tougher I think we can all agree.

It's a hard thing to spend £9m on a player that isn't nailed but I am in agreement with you that he doesn't necessarily need 90 mins to get nice FPL points.

Will still be a test of my willpower to keep him in the long term though (even though I think he will still outscore most midfielders over the season).

I have never felt so underwhelmed before at the start of the season. I've never been a good starter, but lying below 2 million is a new low. Moreover, I have a disastrous squad which hardly looked disastrous at the start of the season - yet I did not play my WC and no point in doing it anymore since the price rises have already happened.

    Rant over.

Yes, I have Mertesacker who should be dropped, Walcott who won't start because Wenger is biased towards his countrymen, Hazard who looked so off, one non-starting defender and Sakho, who probably got arrested or something.
        And the 2 million rank.

I'm no expert but the only thing that went wrong for your team was that Arsenal underperformed, exacerbated by you captaining Walcott. And you have Bahrami. 🙂 But he at least played 78 mins. The difference in 1m ranks is just 7 or 8 points.

What do people think about Jose banishing Eva from the Chelsea bench for the supposed medics' naivity?

PR disaster and scapegoating or sound management?

Personally think City will win the league this year and Jose could be on his merry way with him reaching the end of his usual 3 year cycle before things fall apart. Think Terry's legs will go soon and it could be the beginning of the end.

I think it's classic Mou trying to make the story anything but how poor Chesea were. Think it's harsh on her, but the only reason it is a story is because she is a good looking woman that we've all come to know, for that very reason; if it was any other doctor at any other club nobody would give a shite!

As for Mou on the way out, I don't agree. It was one bad game that they still got a point out of. They'll be thereabouts end of season.

      1. Jet5605
        • 9 Years

Those readers who can look beyond her good looks will recognise that the decision would be equally as poor if it was a bald 50 year old male doctor.

He has no history of longevity at clubs and while he may be given the opportunity to regain the title next year if they do lose it this year I know what I expect to happen. He has a knack of destroying relatioships at a club whenever things don't go his way. That's why Utd and City didn't want him.

At he end of the day everyone hates Mou, loves Eva and doesnt talk so much about the game and result so Mou have achieved exactly what he wanted!
Take pressure off his players, he can take all the abuse as he doesn't care 🙂
