Scout Reports

Scout Report – Adama Traore

Aston Villa’s mass overhaul continued apace with the capture of Barcelona winger Adama Traore on a five-year deal. The former Spain U19 international – who became the Villains’ tenth new recruit this summer – said that the West Midlands club was his favoured transfer destination:

“It’s an honour for me to come here. It’s a club that showed interest in me from the first moment and made me feel important in terms of their project. I have spoken to the manager and have a very good impression of him and what he wants from me. All this have made this club my top attraction. I would also like to express my gratitude to everyone at FC Barcelona for helping me develop as a player and as a person.”

The History

Born in Catalonia, Traore enrolled at Barcelona’s world-renowned La Masia academy in 2004, where he would spend the next nine years learning his trade. It wasn’t until 2013 that Traore earned a spot in the Barcelona B team, who competed in the second tier of Spanish football.

After making his debut for the reserves in October 2013, Traore was afforded regular starts in the second half of the campaign; he went on to bag five goals and four assists across 26 outings at the right-wing berth, clocking 1462 minutes in the process. The 2013/14 season also saw the precocious 17-year-old make his competitive bow for the senior team, with brief cameos arriving in both La Liga and the Champions League.

Traore was a permanent fixture for the B team the following term, tallying three goals and 14 assists in 37 outings. Despite his best efforts, they were relegated from Segunda Division, having finished nine points adrift of safety at the foot of the table. Traore would notch a further two starts for the senior squad in the Copa del Rey tournament, netting a brilliant solo goal in an 8-1 demolition of third-tier side Huesca.

Still just 19 years of age, Traore has represented Spain at the U16, U17 and U19 levels. His last run-outs on the international stage occurred in the summer of 2014, when he bagged two assists for Spain in the group stages of the U19 European Championship.

The Prospects

Sherwood was clearly delighted with his coup after announcing the deal. Discussing his new acquisition with the local press, the Villa boss revealed he’s been a long-term admirer of Traore, though was quick to confirm he’ll be allowed time to settle:

“He’s someone I have been tracking for a long time. He’s physically a man – and he has been for some time. He’s a big powerful boy, very quick, dynamic and a maverick-type player. He stays wide, picks the ball up, runs at defenders and doesn’t give them a minute’s peace. We are delighted he has chosen Aston Villa to continue his development, but that is what it is (development). He is not the finished article by any means. He is certainly a player who can help us out now, but for the long term future he could be magnificent.”

Traore has been deployed on the left wing on the rare occasion, but the bulk of his youth career has been spent on the right flank. Despite boasting an explosive turn of pace that enables him to steal a march on most opposing full-backs, the Catalonian winger displays a propensity for cutting inside and shooting with his less-favoured (left) foot – which perhaps explains he was only able to muster three goals last term.

Akin to Tottenham Hotspur’s Andros Townsend, Traore’s decision-making has been pinpointed as a prime area for improvement. Pooling all the players from the Segunda Division and Europe’s top five leagues, Traore (243) attempted 63 more dribbles than the next-most prolific ball-hogger, Eden Hazard (180). Considering that the young Spaniard falls well short of the Belgian superstar in terms of end product, Sherwood will likely need to reign in this aspect of Traore’s play in the Premier League.

Couple the recruitment of Traore and Jordan Ayew with the imminent return of injured duo Carles Gil and Jack Grealish, in addition to the likes of Scott Sinclair and Gabby Agbonlahor, and it’s clear that Sherwood has a bevy of wide options at his disposal – that’s before you factor in the possibility of Leandro Bacuna adopting an advanced role, as he did in pre-season.

Sherwood has utilised a 4-3-3 in the first couple of fixtures but may switch to a 4-2-3-1 set-up in light of their recent arrivals, with Grealish or Gil operating at the number ten berth. With Ayew favourite to take up the right flank berth in a lone striker system, Traore would be pushing Sinclair for a start on the left in such a set-up. Alternatively, the Villains could operate with a 4-4-2, which could allow Ayew to moved up top and hand Traore the role on the right.

Having scored just once in the opening two Gameweeks, though, it’s fair to say that most Fantasy managers will be steering well clear of Villa’s attacking recruits until they start to look a little more cohesive after a summer of restructuring.

In spite of a relatively kind price of 6.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and a strong quartet of upcoming fixtures (cry, SUN, lei, WBA), Traore looks likely to be eased into contention ensuring that he’s to be filed under “one for the future”.

So I'm really regretting starting Ibe over Albrighton now. Sickening.

I sense his time as a starter is almost up too. Was hoping Liverpool will play 4231 but its looking unlikely now I think 433 with Coutinho and Firmino behind the striker is probably what will happen.

My prediction was almost spot on. AB's to win 44 - 12 (4pts off) and Cooper to be a liability.

Cooper was terrible. Wallabies lost their way after that first try (against the run of play). ABs had the fire in their eyes.

Once the ABs got under way with that try the nerves smoothed out and they were away. Was an even game for the first 20mins.

Never understood the appeal with Ibe tbh. Was always going to be a short-term option before Firmino took his place (likely to happen tomorrow)

Yep, was hoping he'd do something to keep his place or Rodgers would play a 4231 with Coutinho Firmino and Ibe playing behind a striker.

Reckon it's the right move to get rid of Kolarov this week, or should he be safe for another one?

I think Clichy will be back next week. Has helpfully dropped to 5.4 to help potential owners buy players at other positions who've had a price rise

    Ruddy, Rudd
    Kosc, Cedric, Huth, Francis, Coates
    Hazard, Ayew, Mane, Mahrez, Surman
    Aguero, Kane, Jerome

    3.0 ITB, 1 FT

Soton assets not performing. Kane not fit. Punt on Norwich fixtures has gone awry with Jerome. The less said about Coates the better.

Players I'm considering are Costa (for Kane), Diouf (for Jerome), Sanchez, Silva & Yaya (for Mane), 4.5 for Cedric

So far with Kos to come this week over the first two game weeks my defence has got me a massive 2 points. Anyone top that? (Excluding 4 from my keeper)

    @Billy

You have the link to the Dead Team Challenge's Google spreadsheet please?

I see last year's linked in the article but, didn't see anything for this season please.

Haven't got around to putting it together yet. I'm planning on getting this year's up later today, but I haven't ironed out the scoring yet, so the first proper update is probably a couple of weeks away.

        Geez, hurry up!
        It's almost May already... 😉

TBH, when I saw all our teams, I thought you'd had the Google Form we filled auto-populate a sheet you had on the go.
        Obv, zero rush.
Thanks for doing this again sir.
Appreciate the work that must go into this.

It auto-populated that google sheet that was linked to it. Wouldn't have the foggiest how to get google sheets to auto-populate pitches (not really worth the hassle when I have it ready-made in excel). I have an excel spreadsheet that turns those one-line submissions into the pitches like last season. It also highlights over budget teams, teams with 4 players from a team etc that I have to go through and sort. Shouldn't take too long.

Again, no big deal on the time.

And, TBH I don't have any idea how you work your magic...
            (I am woeful w/ Excel)

I thought when I saw the pictures of the pitches & our teams that this was the start / base of the DTC spreadsheet itself.

I get now that you take the info Google Form & put it into a proper Excel sheet.

            Thanks for the clarification.

That was just to prevent people complaining that their team wasn't what they had chosen etc. Can't have a go at me when they can see the whole team in pitch form upon submission. It basically is the same as the DTC pitch except it shows prices rather than scores.

I have to run it in excel as the programming you can do in google sheets is streets behind the capabilities of VBA in excel, which is understandable as VBA has been in development for decades, while google sheets is only new.

The good thing about google sheets is that you can link to urls, so those player shirts on the pitches don't appear in the excel version, just error messages. Provides a much better visual interface than anything excel could do (or at least that I know how to do)

Please help guys, seriously need some advice.

    Ruddy Rudd
Cedric Huth Gomez ( Francis Richards )
    Hazard Sterling Walcott Depay Mane
    Kane Benteke ( Graham )

    I did Coates > Gomez after GW1

I didn't have any CS/Goals/Assists in GW1 and haven't even got any in GW2, is it that my team is really bad? or just that all the usual performers have not performed well?

    what should I do now?

    A) Wildcard ?
    B) take a -4 hit to bring in Aguero,Mahrez and a 7.5( Payet most proably ) ?
    C) just make FT's and hope my team wil eventually come good ?

    Thanks In Advance 🙂

Just relax for a moment. So many of us have had shockers in the opening weeks. Just ride it out, the top players will pay off over the season. I'd just do a FT for now...

Wait on Aguero..watch the game tonight to assess his sharpness..I would be offloading Walcott myself after this gw given that Wenger would "tinker" with his forward options. Payer does seem to be the focal point of West Ham and with their next match against Bournemouth I would suggest get him for Walcott/Depay. Bring in a city def after gw3 along with Aguero. Look out for Gomis 😉

difficult to pick but Kane is not "there" yet in terms of scoring and Liverpool have quite easy home ties in which youd expect Benteke to score. So for me that would be Kane.

I have 2 FT's. What would you recommend?

    Ruddy [Hennessey]

    Cresswell, Mert, Targett [Bassong, Huth]

    Barkley, Payet, Hazard, Mané, Ozil

    Lukaku, Aguero [Grabban]

Don't do anything till after the arsenal game. If theo doesn't do well, odds are another arsenal mid will. People are ditching arsenal midfielders after 1gw and we know that they'll probably have the highest combined score
