The Scout Mission – Gameweek 3

As always, there’s much for us to monitor over the upcoming round of fixtures. Wayne Rooney’s form, Riyad Mahrez and Ross Barkley’s momentum against tougher opponents, Stoke and Swansea’s differentials, Jose Mourinho’s teamsheet and Aleksandar Kolarov’s task of cementing his City start are all on our list as we prepare for the weekend scouting mission…

Depay’s display and Rooney’s reaction to the critics…
Moved to his favoured role on the left against Villa, the Dutchman offered a significant goal threat and followed that up with a midweek brace against Brugges in the Champions League. Rooney, meanwhile, continues to stutter and has come in for some major criticism after a lacklustre showing against Tim Sherwood’s side. The weekend visit of Newcastle affords both a final chance to get amongst the points and tempt further investment before the schedule turns against Louis van Gaal’s outfit.

Grealish’s potential as another budget midfield option…
Having notched the winner against Derby in Monday’s U21 encounter, the Villa wide man could be poised for a first-team return away to Palace. Now down to 5.4, Grealish will be looking to oust Scott Sinclair in the front three and boost his side’s attacking potential – Tim Sherwood’s men have netted just once but with Sunderland, Leicester and West Brom in the next four, have the schedule to build momentum.

Mahrez’ ability to maintain his form….
Arguably, a home clash with Tottenham represents Riyad Mahrez’ first major test after bagging three goals against Sunderland and West Ham in the first two Gameweeks. Get amongst the points and rack up yet more impressive underlying numbers and there will surely be no questioning the merits of the Algerian’s speeding bandwagon.

Stoke, Shaqiri and the Differential that is Diouf…
In a week where Wildcards have been wielded at a frantic pace, the Potters’ upcoming schedule has thrown their players’ names into the hat. A trip to Norwich affords Mark Hughes’ troops the chance of earning a first win of the season and with new boy Xherdan Shaqiri set to be unleashed at Carrow Road, many are keeping a keen eye on their main men ahead of some tempting fixtures. With an ownership of just 2%, Mame Biram Diouf has the chance to announce himself as a major differential if he keeps up the form that’s seen him fire more shots on target (six) than any frontman so far.

Advocaat’s rearguard solution…
The Black Cats’ backline looks a pale imitation of the one that served up 13 clean sheets last time out. Dick Advocaat’s side have already shipped seven goals and the Dutchman is considering his options as in-form Swansea make their way to Wearside this weekend. With Bafetimbi Gomis and Andre Ayew in red-hot form, the Sunderland manager needs to urgently address his ailing defence and there’d be no surprise if he called upon the services of John O’Shea in a vain attempt to paper over the cracks.

….and whether it can cope with Montero…
Back-to-back goals have ensured that the aforementioned Gomis and Ayew have hogged the headlines for Garry Monk’s men but Jefferson Montero has been equally impressive. Having produced more dribbles than any other player in the Premier League so far, Montero has been pivotal to the form that’s seen Swansea bristle with a new level of attacking threat. Advocaat has conceded his full-backs’ forward forays are causing a real headache and Monk will be certain to target Sunderland’s right flank as his in-form wide man looks to build upon his single assist so far.

Mourinho’s teamsheet for the clash with “Tony”…
A trip to the Hawthorns is hardly ideal for the champions as they lick their wounds after last week’s battering at the Etihad. Mourinho has been vocal in his praise of Tony Pulis’ top-flight record and after seeing his side beaten 3-0 in the corresponding fixture last season, faces a tough task to arrest Chelsea’s slump. It will be interesting to see if the Blues boss keeps faith with the old guard or turns to the likes of Kurt Zouma to help stem the tide of opportunities surrendered to opponents.

Barkley on the big stage against City…
It’s one thing scoring against Watford and an injury-hit Southampton but the Everton playmaker now faces a stubborn City rearguard that’s yet to concede. The Toffees’ schedule has, to an extent, prevented us from loading up on the likes of Barkley and Romelu Lukaku but a big performance against Manuel Pellegrini’s men would strengthen his fixture-proof appeal and spark a major scramble for his services at a tempting price of 6.6.

Kolarov’s ability to hold off Clichy’s claims…
The Serbian’s nine-point haul against Chelsea last weekend was somewhat tempered by Gael Clichy’s return to the City bench after stepping up his recovery from injury. Can Kolarov stave off the Frenchman’s threat and nail down a regular role? At 5.6 he’d be Fantasy gold but, as we’ve seen time and again under both Roberto Mancini and Manuel Pellegrini, City’s full-backs are more susceptible to rotation than any other position in the starting XI. Kolarov is only owned by 7% of FPL managers and another impressive showing in tandem with Raheem Sterling will make it very difficult for Pellegrini to contemplate a recall for Clichy.

The Saints and the Europa League hangover…
With many of last year’s regulars either elsewhere or stuck in the treatment room, Ronald Koeman faces a tough task to replicate the resilience that served up 15 clean sheets in the last two seasons. The packed schedule has hardly helped either, and as the Saints attempt to deal with European duties, their domestic aspirations have taken a downturn after shipping five goals in the first two Gameweeks. Fail to impress at Vicarage Road on Sunday and the Southampton fire sale will begin in earnest.

The Sanchez bid for essential status…
Back in the Arsenal starting XI for last week’s trip to Palace, Alexis Sanchez’ drive and never-say-die attitude were key to bouncing back from their Gameweek 1 home loss to West Ham. Yes, at 11.0 he’s hardly budget-friendly but the Chilean’s explosive capabilities are up there with the best forwards as a Fantasy target – with Eden Hazard owners mulling over their options, a big Sanchez performance against Liverpool on Sunday may well prove irresistible and make a further dent in the Chelsea man’s ownership.

    My current team is

    Henn, Panti
    Francis, Skrtel, Morgan, Bassong, Cedric
    Ozil, Mane, Fabregas, Silva, Gradel
    Rooney, Kane, Defoe

2 FT, 0 in the bank.

I was thinking Panti + Morgan -> Butland + Reid, but I was told on the previous page this isn't a great move. What would you do?

12 game ban for each offence!

Chelsea are expensive, partcularly when they're not delivering points. Last season there was a period of few clean sheets in defence and many transferred out. With Hazard not delivering in 2, a general sluggishness and questions over Terry, Costa just returning from injury, resurgence of City, etc and particularly the fact that we are only 2 weeks into a season with a few freak points scorers, many will avoid or transfer out for the smack hit of last week's points.

          This.

Too much uncertainty for that price bracket

Def - they do not look the solid force they were (especially when don't know who might get benched now) apart from Courtois as potential bargain at 5.4.

Mid - Hazard will come good, (and maybe Fab but less of a certainty) but in meantime can you afford to be holding onto hope while watch similar price players go on bit of a rampage of points - Sanchez/Yaya/Silva (possibly even Depay or Countinho) and then there is the fact that some of the upper mid-price players are on some hot form at the moment - ie Ayew and Payet rather than Hazard and cheap is much more appealing at the moment

For - Costa is always going to lose to Kun for expensive forward choice - and some decent mid price options again, making him an expensive gamble that just does not seem worth it at the moment

Add to this that feels only a matter of time until Jose is back in the tracksuit talking about the team he is building for next season

I'm sure Chelsea will turn it around, they're one of the (if not the) favorites and it's only 2 games in..but here are some facts:

Since last season ended they are WWLDDLLDL. Next up they have a stingy Tony Pulis West Brom away, an offensive Palace at home, an offensive Everton away from home and then Arsenal at home. Palace and Everton have scored a combined 9 goals so far.

Chelsea have also conceded the second most attempts on goal in the league behind Palace with 36 attempts (Palace on 37) and 23 of those were INSIDE the box.

Jose will turn it around, he's a top manager, but they're in shambles right now and the short-term isn't looking great unless they get a couple galvanizing wins quickly.

For me it's the dodgy two gameweeks and price. Once I decided to WC I started thinking about value. Chelsea, on the basis of two GWs (which I know is a bit weak), is not good value. But I keep in mind that it won't be hard to go, say, Sanchez to Hazard, or Kolorov to Azpi if things start changing.

Fair enough EJ. I just have a feeling that all the WCers will be looking at potential hits to get on the defence and/ or Hazard, Costa. Sooner rather than later maybe.
FFS had them as weak fixtures in Frisking, I didn't agree with that at all, tbh.

The bottom line is, you pays your money and you takes your chances. I might regret, but my judgment (which was brilliant with my opening team--2.2 million rank) says I won't.

If the players people are getting in are fancied to score well does it matter RCA?

        I think it does matter.
It's not inconceivable that Hazard and defender could score 20 points and 12 points over the next 2 GWs.

Anyway, it was just a thought. I'm not WCing and just found it surprising, is all.

Chelsea players are competing with Arsenal, United and City in the heavyweight options. Chelsea's form is not the best plus there fixtures are tough for the next 5 especially when you compare them to City.

You can't have them all, have to make choices especially with Aguero at 13m.

If you look at their defenders well Terry now dropable and Ivanovic out of form I just don't see them as viable options right now given there price point.

Azp is a solid option but better alternatives right now like Kompany, Kolarov and Darmian IMO when you factor in form and fixtures.

In midfield yeah Hazard could do it and will turn it on sooner or later but hes competing with Silva and Sanchez and most see him as 3rd choice at the moment. Plus there is plenty of option in general in midfield right now.

Fabregas same again with the likes of Ozil and Yaya, he's not a consideration for most.

Upfront no contest Aguero simple. You could go heavy up top with two heavy hitters but the rest of the team is bound to suffer.

If and when Chelsea come good i'm sure people will make the switch to Chelsea pretty quickly, l lets face it by Christmas i'm sure we will all have at least Hazard in our team.

Historically (may or may not be relevant) would a team that spent heavily on 3 players be better off or worse off than a more balanced team?

Just wondering what to do with Aguero and Sanchez + Hazard. Do you all anticipate that you will have to pick either Sanchez or Hazard for the season or do you plan on getting both (or even neither) and Aguero into your team?

    Score Predictions 🙂

Man Utd vs Newcastle | 2-0
As a United fan, I hope this is where we break the 1-0 consistency at an easy fixture against Newcastle. Newcastle have looked decent against Southampton but failed to get a point at Swansea. Depay looked promising yesterday and Rooney is hungry for a goal. Both of them to score IMO

    Leicester vs Spurs | 2-2
As much as I'd love a Spurs thrashing and a win (as a Chadli owner), I don't see that happening. Leicester seem on fine form and Spurs are still hunting for a win so I feel this would pan out to be an interesting match.

West Ham vs Bournemouth | 3-0
West Ham have started the season impressively after a 2-0 win away at the Emirates however a loss last week has stopped their momentum against another in form side. Although, Bournemouth looked impressive against Liverpool and are still hunting for a goal and a win; West Ham are a tough side and I think will comfortably take the 3 points.

    Sunderland vs Swansea | 1-3
Sunderland have looked awful after a very disappointing start to the season. A 4-2 lost away to Leicester and then a 3-1 loss to Norwich at home which not many expected. Defensive issues need to be solved. However, I feel in hunt for a win; Dick will give his all and grab a goal but Swansea will be too strong for them.

Crystal Palace vs Aston Villa | 1-1
Palace should win and arguably are the better team but Villa have made many additions to their squad who are still settling in and I think Gestede will get his first team start and grab a goal. Palace will dominate the match however I still see Villa grabbing a goal. So a draw is what I expect

    Norwich vs Stoke | 1-2
Norwich are on great goal scoring form. Stoke scored 2 away to Spurs however I feel the likes of Redmond, Hoolahan and Jerome will put on a good test. I fancy Jerome to get his first goal but Stoke to scrape the match. Shaqiri to play a part with Diouf.

West Brom vs Chelsea | 0-0
I fancy this to go against all odds. Chelsea have a poor away record against West Brom and Pulis will be looking to continue tightening up after a poor opening hosting City. Chelsea aren't on good form either after suffering a huge defeat to city and losing points against the Swans. Both teams will look to tighten up and I feel it will be the 0-0 game. 1-0 at most.

    Watford vs Southampton | 2-3
I think this will be the unpredictable game. Watford are looking excellent going forward and have a decent defence however I think it'll be a very open game. Southampton have looked poor last week after a disappointing loss to Everton however I think they will bounce back and scrape a 3-2 win over Watford. Deeney to play a part for Watford and Manè to get his first goal of the season.

Everton vs Man City | 0-4
Yes, Everton looked great and sharp last week. However city are looking too strong right now and Aguero looked sharp last week. They put 3 past Chelsea and I expect them to increase that at Everton. Although Everton are likely to score, I think City will continue their 100% clean sheet record and cause an upset at the Merseyside.

    Arsenal vs Liverpool | 2-0
Arguably the game of the weekend, I think Arsenal will win this 2-0 and I fancy them getting their first clean sheet. Although Liverpool have got 6 points out of 6, they looked poor last week and below expectations. Arsenal looked sharp against Palace and will want to continue that momentum. Sanchez to score.

    🙂

Some are starting cos we have no rb cover and don't want to risk him.

My theory is that this team is Stoke on crack (under pullis when delap was scaring defended)
So I think he went for an extra centre back to defend all the set pieces corners crosses

Can I get some advice on my WC team plz

    Romero (McCarthy)
    Clyne, Kompany, Azpil (Gomez, Oxford)
    Mahrez, Yaya, Sanchez, Ozil, (Wanyama)
    Aguero, Lukaku, Deeney

I was thinking Ozil to Depay but United fixtures are looking rough after the Newcastle game

If you have the funds, surely you have to go with Courtois & McCarthey over Butland & Ruddy/Schmeichel right?

Chelsea have conceded the second most attempts on goal in the league behind Palace with 36 attempts (Palace on 37) and 23 of those were INSIDE the box.

Will turn around eventually, but in the next 4?
