Scout Report – DeAndre Yedlin

At the eleventh hour, DeAndre Yedlin sealed a season-long loan deal from Tottenham to Sunderland on deadline day. Having fallen out of favour at White Hart Lane, the USA international is keen to get his career back on track and revealed that a host of opportunities passed him by during the transfer window before he made his way to Wearside:

“This last month has been pretty stressful because there have been so many different teams that have come up and then gone. I have some sort of say but not a whole ton, so that was tough. But I’m glad where I ended up and I’m hoping to make the most out of it. Obviously they’re a little bit lower on the table. I just felt like it was a good place for me to go. It’s a league that you really have to get used to. It’s a tough league, so I think getting the experience of playing with a Premier League team, just getting hopefully consistent games will be huge for me.”

The History

Born in Seattle, Yedlin joined the Seattle Sounders youth system for the 2010/11 campaign. He then enrolled with the University of Akron in February 2011, where he would spend two years playing for the collegiate team. The jet-heeled right-back notched 12 assists in 42 appearances for the Akron Zips, before signing a professional contract with the Seattle Sounders in January 2013.

In two terms with the Sounders, Yedlin racked up three goals and six assists in 69 appearances across all competitions. One of the rising talents in the league, he was named as a member of the MLS All-Star team in 2013, becoming the first rookie since 2005 to receive that honour.

Despite signing a contract with Spurs in the summer of 2014, Yedlin didn’t make the switch to White Hart Lane until January 2015 – following the conclusion of the MLS season. To date, the 22-year-old defender has just one Premier League appearance to his name, having come on as a substitute in a 1-0 loss to Aston Villa last term.

Yedlin is perhaps most known on these shores for his exploits on the international stage, having impressed with his high-impact cameo appearances for USA in the 2014 World Cup. He’s been a regular for the USMNT since breaking through at the beginning of last year, tallying 23 caps in all.

The Prospects

Although exclusively deployed as a right-back during his two-year stint with the Seattle Sounders, Yedlin has been tasked with a right-wing role in three of his previous five starts for USA by virtue of his exceptional speed. Indeed, the Tottenham loanee is renowned for pace that would give Hector Bellerin a run for his money in the full-back stakes and could cause problems for many a Premier League defender.

With Jeremain Lens excelling on the right flank and Spurs – if their pre-season campaign is anything to go by – looking to nurture Yedlin’s defensive qualities, the American seems more likely to push for starts at the right-back berth. In light of Adam Matthews being ruled out until October with an ankle injury, Billy Jones – who’s started all four matches – stands as the only competition for Yedlin. Although the former has failed to impress so far, it remains to be seen if Dick Advocaat will integrate the American after the home tie against his parent club next Gameweek, though.

In the event that Advocaat – in appreciation of Sunderland’s paucity of wide options now that Adam Johnson is a long-term absentee – shifts Lens back to a more familiar left wing role and hands Yedlin a chance on the right flank, the 4.4-priced defender would certainly pique our interest by way of his out-of-position potential. That seems unlikely, however, given that Jermain Defoe is now stationed on the left due to Advocaat’s reluctance to field him as a lone striker.

Looking at the statistics, Sunderland’s defensive frailties this term are likely to keep most managers well clear for now, though. After proving such a good source of budget defenders last term, with 13 clean sheets accrued, they’ve struggled to batten down the hatches, shipping more goals (ten) and shots inside the box (46) than any other team.

Nonetheless, should Advocaat’s side rediscover their resilience and Yedlin manages to oust Jones in the right-back pecking order, that 4.4 price tag suggests he could yet become a viable option for our five-man defences, given that fellow full-back Patrick van Aanholt come in at 5.0. With Bournemouth, West Ham, West Brom and Newcastle also to follow in the next six, the schedule certainly offers a degree of optimism for the Wearsiders as they look to build on back-to-back draws against Swansea and Villa.

If this were your team, what would you do with it? 2 FTs and 0.0 ITB.
I understand Bertrand is allegedly back but I don't need to get rid of Targett for a few weeks due to my other defender's good fixtures as I can afford to bench him.

    Hart
    Darmian / Williams / Targett
    Sanchez (C) / Payet / Toure / Ayew
    Pelle / Aguero / Diouf

    McCarthy -- Hoolahan, Richards, Muniesa

      I would actually do Targett+Diouf to Francis+Wilson

I genuinely think Wilson will out score Diouf over the next few weeks and continue to rise for that bargain price tag. They have better fixtures in the next 4 compared to Stoke.

It would also leave you 0.3 in the bank

He was lucky in FPL last season - had a run where everything went in, lots of goals from outside the box, an unsustainable shot conversion rate and so on.

He could perform just as well as a footballer this season and still score a lot less FPL points. The luck evens out over time.

    - Wickham (CP)

Iam ganna repost this once again, as there is a lot of people on a WC crying about no price rises.

    Hi FFS!

Not sure if this was discussed somewhere sometime, but this is something which bothers me - price rises/drops and Wild Cards.

I believe that mojority of fantasy players just hit the WC button after the GW which gives them a week (or two in case od Int break) to tinker with their teams. Some common knowledge is that when on WC, bringing or droping players from your team do not influence overall tresholds needed for player price changes. Therefore your moves when on WC do not influence player prices. But in case you are on a WC you WANT your moves to influence player price changes (one tranfer is spit in the sea, I know, but still). So simply you want your players which you bring in to rise and players you drop to go down to make it harder for your opponents.

Due to all this I strongly believe that its better to do your transfers for the whole week like on WC, but actually hit the WC button just before the deadline to erase all the hits you have taken through the week. If this will be followed by enough players I strongly believe that it will possitively influence the price rises(drops) during the GWs where many players WC.

So basically take hits through the week and hit the WC button just before the deadline

Slightly different this season though coz oppo can't tell if you've wildcarded. In a tight mini league value to surprising them with a wc.

    2. Breedy
      • 15 Years
      8 years, 9 months ago

You'll never get enough people to see this to actually make a difference. And that's if they were willing to risk forgetting to wildcard for an entirely negligible reward.

      1. Skokym
        • 10 Years
        8 years, 9 months ago

Maybe I will maybe I wont but every player taking this game seriously shoul follow this imo. And I do not think that to forget to wildcard for someone taking this game seriously is an option.

Do it if you like. It's logical advice and I'm sure makes some difference, if only slight - but Rhinos is right in that it does show your hand to your ML, so really it has to be personal choice.

Real Madrid, because they wanted DDG for free next season..and are trying to put the blame on Manchester United so that He doesn't sign a new contract.

Surely, he will be offered a new contract to make sure he doesn't go on a free.

Does the price tag he holds take into account the remaining period/years left on his contract - which I'd assume so since this is how young players are so overly valued these days.

It is his last year..and it's up to DDG to whether Sign a new contract or not...If he does sign (a big money contract, with a ridiculous buyout clause, Which United will Offer) then things are different.

Not at all.. Could be the Northern Ireland pairing of McAuley + Evans or the new CB pairing of Chester + Evans. Either way he is probably the 4th in line to start CB at West Brom. just get Evans for 0.3 more

Agree with Disable. Holebas is an attacking fullback.

Did the same error to pick him over Francis at start of season, on the grounds that the latter was supposed to be a card magnet. Well, that went well..... Now hoping he won't drop by more than 0.1 this GW, as I want to wait until GW5 to play my wildcard.

somebody on this sigte told me that daniels will be out for a 5-6 weeks, so hes replacement is Adam Smith.

        dunno 🙂

And it might be, but isn't he a RB? Bennett was signed on deadline day and is a LB (albeit not a very good one). I'm no Bournemouth expert though.

Hazard to Sanchez for a hit?
Plan was to just hold, but a whole week of nothing... Idle hands.

      Why?

      1. turboLuck

Been hanging onto Hazard hoping he'll come right. But then I saw how many more shots Sanchez has had which got me thinking that maybe the 11m is better spent on him.

A push either way, although I'm more inclined to hold.
