Scout Report – DeAndre Yedlin

At the eleventh hour, DeAndre Yedlin sealed a season-long loan deal from Tottenham to Sunderland on deadline day. Having fallen out of favour at White Hart Lane, the USA international is keen to get his career back on track and revealed that a host of opportunities passed him by during the transfer window before he made his way to Wearside:

“This last month has been pretty stressful because there have been so many different teams that have come up and then gone. I have some sort of say but not a whole ton, so that was tough. But I’m glad where I ended up and I’m hoping to make the most out of it. Obviously they’re a little bit lower on the table. I just felt like it was a good place for me to go. It’s a league that you really have to get used to. It’s a tough league, so I think getting the experience of playing with a Premier League team, just getting hopefully consistent games will be huge for me.”

The History

Born in Seattle, Yedlin joined the Seattle Sounders youth system for the 2010/11 campaign. He then enrolled with the University of Akron in February 2011, where he would spend two years playing for the collegiate team. The jet-heeled right-back notched 12 assists in 42 appearances for the Akron Zips, before signing a professional contract with the Seattle Sounders in January 2013.

In two terms with the Sounders, Yedlin racked up three goals and six assists in 69 appearances across all competitions. One of the rising talents in the league, he was named as a member of the MLS All-Star team in 2013, becoming the first rookie since 2005 to receive that honour.

Despite signing a contract with Spurs in the summer of 2014, Yedlin didn’t make the switch to White Hart Lane until January 2015 – following the conclusion of the MLS season. To date, the 22-year-old defender has just one Premier League appearance to his name, having come on as a substitute in a 1-0 loss to Aston Villa last term.

Yedlin is perhaps most known on these shores for his exploits on the international stage, having impressed with his high-impact cameo appearances for USA in the 2014 World Cup. He’s been a regular for the USMNT since breaking through at the beginning of last year, tallying 23 caps in all.

The Prospects

Although exclusively deployed as a right-back during his two-year stint with the Seattle Sounders, Yedlin has been tasked with a right-wing role in three of his previous five starts for USA by virtue of his exceptional speed. Indeed, the Tottenham loanee is renowned for pace that would give Hector Bellerin a run for his money in the full-back stakes and could cause problems for many a Premier League defender.

With Jeremain Lens excelling on the right flank and Spurs – if their pre-season campaign is anything to go by – looking to nurture Yedlin’s defensive qualities, the American seems more likely to push for starts at the right-back berth. In light of Adam Matthews being ruled out until October with an ankle injury, Billy Jones – who’s started all four matches – stands as the only competition for Yedlin. Although the former has failed to impress so far, it remains to be seen if Dick Advocaat will integrate the American after the home tie against his parent club next Gameweek, though.

In the event that Advocaat – in appreciation of Sunderland’s paucity of wide options now that Adam Johnson is a long-term absentee – shifts Lens back to a more familiar left wing role and hands Yedlin a chance on the right flank, the 4.4-priced defender would certainly pique our interest by way of his out-of-position potential. That seems unlikely, however, given that Jermain Defoe is now stationed on the left due to Advocaat’s reluctance to field him as a lone striker.

Looking at the statistics, Sunderland’s defensive frailties this term are likely to keep most managers well clear for now, though. After proving such a good source of budget defenders last term, with 13 clean sheets accrued, they’ve struggled to batten down the hatches, shipping more goals (ten) and shots inside the box (46) than any other team.

Nonetheless, should Advocaat’s side rediscover their resilience and Yedlin manages to oust Jones in the right-back pecking order, that 4.4 price tag suggests he could yet become a viable option for our five-man defences, given that fellow full-back Patrick van Aanholt come in at 5.0. With Bournemouth, West Ham, West Brom and Newcastle also to follow in the next six, the schedule certainly offers a degree of optimism for the Wearsiders as they look to build on back-to-back draws against Swansea and Villa.

      I would keep Benteke honestly.
Liverpool LOVE Norwich and they have AVL home as well next.
Also, he could bully Blind this week and knick a goal in.

I guess sometimes it's form over fixtures and he's in close to 0 form at the moment…

Your defence represents price reductions on Lidl shelves look good on first glance but ultimately discarded. Downgrade one of Rooney or Benteke (wait for injury news) upgrade Oxford Browning Targett

Targett will lose his place any time soon when Bertrand is back

Actually don't mind my forward line now. Vardy is great. Deeney should get his fair share of goals (I remember dropping Austin last season because he was slow off the mark) and borini can do the biz.

    Butland McCarthy
    Azpi Kolarov Gomez Francis Richards
    Sanchez Silva Pedro Maherz Wilson
    Augero Diouf Wilson

    0 itb, 1 FT

Planning to save or is there anything I'm missing?

You're right. Butland may well rack up save pts and then he is well placed for a CS or three after that.

Keepers are such an odd pick. Heaton last season ended up as one of the highest pts scorers in that position....how....just how. It really is a bit of a lottery.

My workmates want to play UCL fantasy however the official UEFA UCL fantasy is still showing last year and hasn't been updated at all. Anyone know what's going on? (We don't like fantasy iteam because it's app based and difficult to use)

Thoughts? 2 FTs but 0.0 ITB. Going to keep Targett on the bench for a couple of weeks before getting rid.

    Hart
    Darmian / Williams / Richards
    Sanchez (C) / Payet / Toure / Ayew
    Pelle / Aguero / Diouf

    McCarthy -- Hoolahan, Targett, Muniesa

He played LB for a while and was a bit of an Ivanovic with how he'd pop up in the opponents box. He's never going to do that from CB but would like to see him step out from the back again and go on a rampaging run.

Stats are misleading. Do you remember those great long barren runs Benteke had at Villa? Everyone remembers when he arrived and the second half of last season but he was pretty poor in between

I used to really like him. He did really well with him early on in his villa days and I gave him quite a few chances when decent fixtures arose so I thought I would wait after he went to Liverpool. I just don't trust him any more. I hope he works out for you though. He could be great.

To be fair for the price difference I don't expect Wilson to be on par with Benteke stats wise. He should be cheaper for a reason.

I've just about forgiven the game for punishing me playing my WC last week and shipping Ayew, Sinclair and Mané. It's a huge form over fixtures season so far yet arguably only Ayew out of those 3 was a silly transfer.

I think Sinclair wrangles the most... Had him from GW1 rotating with Sakho. Bou(A) in GW1 then benched until GW4 for SUN(H). Only him not even making the team in GW3 and dropping in price cause me to switch to plan B and WC...

Losing Mané before Norwich at home is never going to look good, retrospectively. Hey ho. These price drops after a bad week and a WC in your back pocket takes balls of steel to resist.

I think moist of us would have been twitching over Sinclair and Mane. The hat trick mid week by Sinclair didn't tempt you to keep him for a bit?

It did, but I couldn't find the 0.4m to keep him over Westwood on the WC. I also wouldn't have been able to start him as my 5th mid as I couldn't play AOA on the WC.

Bottom line is I shouldn't have played my WC, but who was to know.

Every year my WC team scores less points in the immediate game week than if I had not made any changes. Every time!

I either need to learn patience or pick a dud GW1 team and wildcard immediately.

Patience has worked really well this year. It has worked for me any way. Sure I was patient with Rooney and Hazard which never worked out but I was also patient with Wilson and Mane and that did so it worked out ok in the end.

Quite possibly. I was on the verge of transferring Diouf in myself last week for Rooney. Decided to give Rooney a last go in the end after his capital one hat trick. Then Gomis seemed like a better option. Wilson does seem to be scoring goals though

Well he has good fixtures until GW 9. I will probably look at him then if his goals aren't coming it will be a sensible time to ditch. If they do then it will be a tougher decision

Yeh I prefer Diouf but ain't much between them and Murray may well play alongside Wilson and nick some goals off him.

I agree that sometimes if a player has let you down in previous seasons, your abit apprehensive about getting them in, but things do change, Mane let me down last year, but he come good when I needed him gwk4

Yeah. It really colours your views going forward. I have Mane too. What do you think regarding keeping him. He did well last week against 10 men but can he be relied upon for steady points?

So GW 1 you fill your side with cheapies more likely to rise leave a shedload in the bank. You will be loaded in a couple of weeks.

Tough one. 2 players currently scoring well and one with a good season behind him who surely will hit form at some point.

Or the new boy who may well spearhead what in theory should be a strong attack.
