Suspensions

The Suspension Tightrope – Gameweek 6

Alexander Tettey became the first player to topple off the Suspension Tightrope this season, picking up his fifth yellow for a foul on Philippe Coutinho during Norwich’s 1-1 draw with Liverpool on Sunday. The Norwegian enforcer – who has amassed a card every 105 minutes this term – now misses the Canaries’ Capital One Cup Third Round match against West Brom on Wednesday, before returning next Gameweek for a trip to West Ham.

Prior to today’s match, Tettey tried to explain the series of combative displays which has now seen him collect a booking in five of the first six Gameweeks:

“If you look at the yellow cards, there is a reason. I don’t go out looking to pick up yellow cards. I have a role in the team and the manager has made it clear what he wants from me in that position. If it was up to me I would be having zero yellow cards. He has been helping me a lot since he came in, in terms of what I should do and always looking at how I play and giving me some advice. He played in my position so he knows exactly what I have to do.”

Elsewhere on the Gameweek 6 Tightrope, the likes of Joe Gomez, Fernandinho, Sebastien Bassong, Erik Dier, Ciaran Clark, Matteo Darmian and Eliaquim Mangala remain on three yellows, having escaped the referee’s wrath in this round of fixtures.

There are six new additions at the three-yellow mark, though, with Jeffrey Schlupp, James Milner, Jack Colback, Andre Ayew, Sebastian Coates and Billy Jones bolstering the ranks after this weekend’s matches.

Turning our attention to the newly-suspended players, Arsenal duo Gabriel and Santi Cazorla were both dismissed during their 2-0 loss to Chelsea on Saturday. The former received a straight red for kicking Diego Costa, meaning he’ll sit out the Gunners’ midweek League Cup clash against Tottenham Hotspur and two league ties (lei, MUN), before making a potential return in Gameweek 9 for a trip to Watford. Cazorla, meanwhile, was sent off for two bookable offences and is set to miss the midweek cup derby with Spurs. This means he will be back in contention for Saturday’s road encounter at Leicester.

Kevin Mirallas was brought on in the dying embers of Everton’s 0-0 draw against Swansea but still found time to earn a straight red for a studs-up challenge on Swans player Modou Barrow. Nonetheless, Toffees boss Roberto Martinez is weighing up the possibility of launching an appeal to the FA:

“I always tell my subs to come on with real intensity so I was pleased with Kevin’s manner. I felt he was more like a striker trying to defend himself and maybe putting in a defensive challenge which looked worse than it actually was. I haven’t seen it in detail but sometimes you need to show a little more common sense and I felt that he clearly didn’t have the intention to hurt the Swansea player. It was more Kevin being fired up trying to get the tempo of the game and trying to help the team. I’m disappointed with the action but not with his manner. I haven’t seen it again but we’ll look at it and if there are grounds for an appeal we’ll look at it.”

Although he received just a yellow during the Blues’ meeting with Arsenal, Diego Costa may yet face retrospective action if referee Mike Dean confirms he failed to see any potential incidents involving the Chelsea striker and Laurent Koscielny on Saturday lunchtime. The FA are studying the whistler’s match report and are expected to announce their verdict tomorrow.

Arsene Wenger is certainly adamant that the Spain international should be punished with what would amount to a three-match ban:

“I don’t want to judge Mike Dean overall but in this game it was surprising that Costa got away with what he did. You go into half-time with a red card and he stays on the pitch.”

Moving onto the players that are currently serving out bans, Valon Behrami still has two league fixtures (CRY, bou) left on his three-match suspension, while Charlie Adam and Aleksandar Mitrovic serve the last of three-match bans in the Capital One Cup.

Adam will skip Stoke’s road tie against Fulham in midweek, meaning he will be available for the Gameweek 7 home clash against Bournemouth. Similarly, Mitrovic will be available for Newcastle’s home clash against Chelsea in Gameweek 7 as we will miss Sheffield Wednesday’s visit on Wednesday.

Potters boss Mark Hughes can also call upon Ibrahim Afellay’s services for their home match-up against Bournemouth next weekend, given that the Dutch winger sat out the second match of his two-game ban this Gameweek. Watford defender Miguel Britos is back in contention for the home clash against Palace after serving out a suspension for violent conduct.

Kun out for Ighalo/Sahko to allow for a KDB + Silva double up?

Kun out for Ighalo makes a lot of sense to me.
I did Sanchez to Payet just before his rise and am a lot more confident in my team now.
These "Big Names" aren't performing, and for all the "yes they're due and about to explode" comments then I'll wait until they do and then bring them back in since I plan on keeping the money in the bank.

I'd be careful dropping Kun. If you watch City you know that he's not far from having a hattie. Drop at your own peril.

Watched City last week and also looked at his stats.
I'd have no compunction about getting rid until he shows some form.

Hey DZ, trying but struggling to make up ground as Pelle and Hazard punish me for selling them on WC 2 weeks ago. Thoughts on these options for this shower of shite?

    Begovic
    Kolarov Skrtel Dawson
    Sanchez Yaya Ayew Coutinho Mahrez
    Aguero Wilson

    Naughton Coloccini Rantie

    A) Sanchez > Hazard
    B) Coutinho > Payet
    C) Rantie > Bojan (and play AoA chip)

    Thanks.

These so called "sideways" moves are usually frowned upon by people who are stuck in their ways.
If a player costs about the same and is on better form then make the transfer.
Do you remember when the received wisdom was "Always have Baines but never captain him".
These times require a radical re-evaluation of the common "rules" of playing this game.
        What were the other ones:
"Never take a hit for a defender". Try telling that to people who were considering bringing in Kolarov but obeyed this rule. Or people who stuck with Courtouis, Ivanovic or Terry.
There were other "rules", but I've forgotten them.
        As should we all.

haha love the rant on sideways + your grav.

I agree with the essence of what you're saying - sideways moves are there for a reason and it makes sense given a particular team structure. In my case, I would have to take hits here and there to field Sanchez + Hazard....questionable strategy since both are off form at the moment - only the former is not looking great and Hazard might have just had his mental block lifted.

I wouldn't read to much into Hazard's performance against nine men.
His goal may not have even been his, but at least he looked interested for a change.
Still, I wouldn't get him in until he shows real signs of form.

Actually Sanchez has better form, just no luck.

Hazard could only score against 9 man.

Truly sideways. Not even for a free transfer.

That's the thing that worries me - about Sanchez being literally at the cusp of an explosion.

I might just save the damn transfer and stop tinkering with my team. All the tinkering I've done has cost me more than it has benefited.

      How much in bank?

I have had Coutinho since day 1 and just used my 1FT to bring in Payet. Watch him do something next week with AVL at home - but then I still have Benteke (for now)

Leicester is leaky, love to watch them but think Sanchez has a good chance to get off the mark. But then again Chelsea has a few decent fixtures.

I am saving chips until happier with team.

    Alrighty DZ,
had a week which was not incredible but one that was a real confidence booster 🙂
Looking ahead to next week, I am considering a Bench Boost! 😮

    McCarthy (wat) Butland (BOU)
Prodl (CPL) Francis (stk) Kolarov (tot) Fonte (SWA) Bellerin (lei)
Mahrez (ARS) Barkley© (wba) Payet (NOR) Sanchez (lei) Yaya (tot)
Kun (tot) Gomis (sou) Ighalo (CRY)

    1 FT… 0.1 ITB

    A) Bench Boost
    B) No BB, Who do I bench?

    1) Save FT
    2) Use FT on what?

Appreciate the responses in advance 🙂

I have won my mini leagues 3 years in a row against a player who has nearly 2.5m more than me and I finished 7k with 103m lower than many who were on 105 and 106 some even had 110 and were doing poorly...tv is important but doing transfers after waiting for more information and sticking with some players who fall in value temporarily and not following the trains are good traits to have in this game, its not just about making those changes because you fear them going dowin or up in price. Also having minimum transfers is important for any league battles. So no I'm not lying to myself I'm being realistic based on experience...

btw I'm not a member and many members on here think they know alot more than non members but my mate is a member and I've seen the info and stats he gets its all basic stuff and nothign worth the money I think, so I've decided not to take it...so I although I respect your opinion I don't think its necessarily true and there are many alternatives to high valued playerrs even further down the line.

and I never said anything about chasing price changes to a fault. you need some luck to build TV early, but I just think you're being naive to completely dismiss the positive effects of having bigger player combinations at your disposal down the line just because some cheaper players are on form now. class is forever, form is temporary.

my TV might be 103.4m tonight and I haven't taken a single hit and my rank is decent enough currently at 250k.

thats really good but I'm guessing with such a high TV you either got really lucky with your initial squad or you wild carded early?

mine is poor atm nearly 101 but ive not wild carded yet and have taken minimal hits ...yet to see if this will turn out good at the end or just be a major fail, we'll have to wait and see guess. Of course having a bigger tv is better than not but its at what expense thats my issue....if youve got it like you then I think thats a bonus but many are just looking for that value and thats it, thats what im against. I agree about form being permanent, ive been stuck with kun from day one but still believe hes the best,, was rewarded with eden last gw finally and yet to reap rewards for alexis...

I did WC in GW3 but started off very poorly. Haven't taken a single hit yet, I just wildcarded well.

Now if it was like last season's system, I wouldn't have wildcarded yet.

last season we got a January WC (only used in January) and a normal/vanilla WC that could be used at anytime from August until May.

this season we have a WC that is only valid before the end of the year (not sure the exact date) at which point it disappears/fizzles and a second, separate WC for the second half of the season that only appears after Janury (also not sure of exact date)

Stupid in-flight wi-fi cut out before I could reply to all those who gave advice, thank you! A few more data points sought here:

    WC:

    Myhill | McCarthy
    Azpi | Kolarov | Cresswell | Martin | Hangeland
    Mata | KdB | Ayew | Mahrez | Hazard
    Martial | Pelle | Wilson

Martial was purchased on the advice of some folks here for the double rise and in any event he might prove useful assuming nothing happens in midweek, as United welcome Sunderland. So, in order for me to recapture Kun, it might be Hazard and Pelle who make way (someone like a Sako or Redmond instead of Haz or further tinkering to afford Payet). Otherwise...thoughts?

Braced for the worst. From past experience, Silva is the type of player who moves from injury to injury unless he gets a full period of rest.

Ankle knock...next thing you know it's a calf, then his opposite leg's thigh gets strained for compensating. then it's hamstrings after walking around gingerly for a couple of days. then he sprains his ankle while walking to the toilet. repeat.
