Suspensions

The Suspension Tightrope – Gameweek 6

Alexander Tettey became the first player to topple off the Suspension Tightrope this season, picking up his fifth yellow for a foul on Philippe Coutinho during Norwich’s 1-1 draw with Liverpool on Sunday. The Norwegian enforcer – who has amassed a card every 105 minutes this term – now misses the Canaries’ Capital One Cup Third Round match against West Brom on Wednesday, before returning next Gameweek for a trip to West Ham.

Prior to today’s match, Tettey tried to explain the series of combative displays which has now seen him collect a booking in five of the first six Gameweeks:

“If you look at the yellow cards, there is a reason. I don’t go out looking to pick up yellow cards. I have a role in the team and the manager has made it clear what he wants from me in that position. If it was up to me I would be having zero yellow cards. He has been helping me a lot since he came in, in terms of what I should do and always looking at how I play and giving me some advice. He played in my position so he knows exactly what I have to do.”

Elsewhere on the Gameweek 6 Tightrope, the likes of Joe Gomez, Fernandinho, Sebastien Bassong, Erik Dier, Ciaran Clark, Matteo Darmian and Eliaquim Mangala remain on three yellows, having escaped the referee’s wrath in this round of fixtures.

There are six new additions at the three-yellow mark, though, with Jeffrey Schlupp, James Milner, Jack Colback, Andre Ayew, Sebastian Coates and Billy Jones bolstering the ranks after this weekend’s matches.

Turning our attention to the newly-suspended players, Arsenal duo Gabriel and Santi Cazorla were both dismissed during their 2-0 loss to Chelsea on Saturday. The former received a straight red for kicking Diego Costa, meaning he’ll sit out the Gunners’ midweek League Cup clash against Tottenham Hotspur and two league ties (lei, MUN), before making a potential return in Gameweek 9 for a trip to Watford. Cazorla, meanwhile, was sent off for two bookable offences and is set to miss the midweek cup derby with Spurs. This means he will be back in contention for Saturday’s road encounter at Leicester.

Kevin Mirallas was brought on in the dying embers of Everton’s 0-0 draw against Swansea but still found time to earn a straight red for a studs-up challenge on Swans player Modou Barrow. Nonetheless, Toffees boss Roberto Martinez is weighing up the possibility of launching an appeal to the FA:

“I always tell my subs to come on with real intensity so I was pleased with Kevin’s manner. I felt he was more like a striker trying to defend himself and maybe putting in a defensive challenge which looked worse than it actually was. I haven’t seen it in detail but sometimes you need to show a little more common sense and I felt that he clearly didn’t have the intention to hurt the Swansea player. It was more Kevin being fired up trying to get the tempo of the game and trying to help the team. I’m disappointed with the action but not with his manner. I haven’t seen it again but we’ll look at it and if there are grounds for an appeal we’ll look at it.”

Although he received just a yellow during the Blues’ meeting with Arsenal, Diego Costa may yet face retrospective action if referee Mike Dean confirms he failed to see any potential incidents involving the Chelsea striker and Laurent Koscielny on Saturday lunchtime. The FA are studying the whistler’s match report and are expected to announce their verdict tomorrow.

Arsene Wenger is certainly adamant that the Spain international should be punished with what would amount to a three-match ban:

“I don’t want to judge Mike Dean overall but in this game it was surprising that Costa got away with what he did. You go into half-time with a red card and he stays on the pitch.”

Moving onto the players that are currently serving out bans, Valon Behrami still has two league fixtures (CRY, bou) left on his three-match suspension, while Charlie Adam and Aleksandar Mitrovic serve the last of three-match bans in the Capital One Cup.

Adam will skip Stoke’s road tie against Fulham in midweek, meaning he will be available for the Gameweek 7 home clash against Bournemouth. Similarly, Mitrovic will be available for Newcastle’s home clash against Chelsea in Gameweek 7 as we will miss Sheffield Wednesday’s visit on Wednesday.

Potters boss Mark Hughes can also call upon Ibrahim Afellay’s services for their home match-up against Bournemouth next weekend, given that the Dutch winger sat out the second match of his two-game ban this Gameweek. Watford defender Miguel Britos is back in contention for the home clash against Palace after serving out a suspension for violent conduct.

What if Martial is plays midweek and rested against SUN. Van Gaal has SUN game before the tough fixtures for any experiments and maybe he decides to play rooney upfront(to give him one more shot to score) and brings hererra in the team. that would be a blow to martial owners. With Van Gaal u never know. 😉

there is literally no chance that will happen, we finally find someone who's capable of scoring goals, what should we do? take him out? let me guess, you aren't a Martial owner.

What he's trying to say is, LVG may protect him. There is CL games around the corner and he is the only real striker manu have. An injury vs Sunderland could feck the things up

C'mon you can admit it, you'd love to get him in there. Gomis is just as likely to be a "flash in the pan".

"Potential", ah yes guaranteed 30 goals this season then. Believe me I toyed with the idea for ages last night but couldn't find enough to back up the move. Good luck though, let's chat again in 3 or so game weeks time.

It's good to see Utd fans crawling back from under their rocks though, like Martial is the 2nd coming or something. 😆

My colleague has made another 5 transfers for 16 points in hits.

After 6 GWs he has used his WC'd and taken in total 72 points in hits this season. None of his transfer binges have played off.

Was about to pull the trigger on Gomis to Martial last night then checked stats. Gomis important stats, eg shots in box, are up in the last 2 games over the 1st 4 games. Martial conversion rate is unreasonably high. His touches in the box are low. Utd have had 6 shots on target in last 2 games, I read last night thy they've scored all 6, again un maintainable.

Think I'll nit get carried away by this bandwagon and hold.

Hey ya DZ (I hope so)

So Pelle -> Benteke (c) is a big failure 🙁

    Would you WC this lot?

    Ruddy Rudd
    Kos Kolarov Huth* Gomez* Nyom
    Hazard Silva* Payet Mahrez Westwood
    Kun Benteke* Wilson

      Ruddy/Rudd > Myhill/Butland
      Huth - Gomez transfer out
      Maybe Silva transfer out
      Maybe Benteke transfer out

Probably no, unless Benteke & Silva are both out for a couple games....

Pedro > Coutinho was equally frustrating.

I wouldn't wildcard that lot imo, Nabil - but I can see 5 or 6 changes I would make if you would want to (the ones you've highlighted plus the keepers).

For now, just Benteke out back to Pelle or Martial.

Thinking of ditching Coutinho right away. Not sure why I fell into the Liverpool trap having been burned before.

Indeed. I had a nightmare with them during last season's DGW - not sure why I haven't learned my lesson.

To rub salt into wound, I did Jenk -> Nyom too just to fund Pelle -> Benteke, when I knew WBA's defense is a must these days. How frustrating.

You think Martial is a good pick? I thought his scoring rate is unsustainable at least...

If you're concerned about the TV game, the Martial has to be considered. As a United fan, I thought he did very little else aside from taking those 2 chances very very very well. As a team, we weren't creating that much but I guess that is the style of LVG.

Start of the season I was telling myself how Pelle is for the long term - yet I somehow managed to panic sell him on my WC. I might be tempted to reverse the trade and just keep Pelle. I will be trying to get Pelle back in....not sure what to do with my team now though - my 3-5-2 switch has been horrendous.

Yeah I'm concern about that - especially when I have nothing itb atm. Gosh I really thought Benteke would explode yesterday, turned out I was wrong.

How I wish I've abandoned the TV game and just kept Targett, Mane & Pelle - my GW1 picks. SOT have plum fixtures from GW9 - you;re right might get Pelle back in.

I think Martial owners will win this week - Sunderland is set to be quite a good game imo.

It's more the longer term that I've focused on and worry about his gametime vs Ars / City.
That said I'm kinda annoyed I didn't swap him for Gomis last night as despite the hard upcoming fixtures - there really are no standout strikers at the moment.

How do people afford Martial? Is it with exact replacement, money in the bank or hit?

Looking at FFFix the top transfer (for this Gameweek) looking like these :

    1. Gomis > Martial
    2. Benteke > Martial
    6. Pelle > Martial

Is Aguero > Martial on the card also?

        That was for Forwards only.

        Looking at Midfielder;

        2. Sanchez > Payet
        9. Willian > Payet :ozil:

Ayew > Payet not really popular, but some have done that.

Aguero -> Martial is nothing short of madness. Completely understand why people are bringing him in for Gomis and Benteke (even though I'm keeping Gomis) but for Aguero? No. Just no.

        • 9 Years

Yeah, madness. But it surely an option for some.

I'm thinking of ditching Aguero but not for Martial; if not for his fixtures against Spurs this week.

I always assume my 2nd striker would be within 8.0 to 9.0 region, so it's exact replacement for me. If I go Gomis, surely I will keep some money itb.

        • 9 Years

If you have squad structure, yes.

But some on here (myself included) have 13 - 7 - 5.5 structure (Kun - Gomis - Wilson), make it hard to do with just 1FT without some money in the bank.

        1. NABIL - FPL otai
          • 11 Years
          8 years, 8 months ago

That's a similar structure to mine, but like I said, If I go Gomis, surely I will keep some money itb in case the likes of Pelle, Benteke, Lukaku or that new kid at OT explode.
