Digest

The Digest – Gameweek 6

United’s new goal hero and Watford’s fine opening displays arrive on our “Digest” radar, whilst Chelsea’s resurgence looks poised to resurrect our interest in Eden Hazard and the Blues backline.

The Player

A finely taken brace against Southampton on Sunday afternoon has catapulted Anthony Martial onto many Fantasy managers’ radars this week.

After netting as a sub in the Gameweek 5 win over Liverpool, Martial earned his first league start under Louis van Gaal and wasted no time in making an impact by firing the Red Devils to a hard-earned 3-2 victory at St Mary’s.

Ahead of a home clash against Sunderland, a staggering 330,000+ Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers have drafted in the young Frenchman since the weekend, with his price rising from 8.0 to 8.2 in the last 48 hours. Produce the goods against the Black Cats and the bandwagon will kick into overdrive.

With few big-hitters justifying their price tags, Fantasy managers are prepared to turn to the form forwards to fire them up the rankings. Analysis of Martial’s displays for Monaco last year – where he racked up eight goals and an assist over nine league appearances between early March and early May – indicates he’s a confidence striker clearly capable of embarking on scoring streaks.

Certainly, United’s schedule directly after the Sunderland encounter – (ars, eve, MCI) – is anything but straightforward and does suggest a degree of caution. Given that they’ve just put six past Liverpool and the Saints in their last two, though, there’s plenty of reason for optimism that Van Gaal’s men, and Martial, can cement their fixture-proof status.

The Team

A 2-1 win over Newcastle earned Watford a second straight win as Quique Sanchez Flores’ men quickly adapt to life in the Premier League.

After ending Swansea’s unbeaten record in Gameweek 5, the Hornets have maintained momentum under the savvy Spaniard, with Odion Ighalo’s brace at St James’ Park taking his tally to four strikes in the opening six. At a price of just 5.1, the Nigerian has become vital to Watford’s survival quest, having netted all but one of his side’s five goals to date. Ighalo climbed to second in the FPL forward standings on the back of his weekend 13-point return, yet still sits in just 3% of sides, whilst Troy Deeney’s (5.3) trio of assists have also kept his points ticking over, despite his failure to score so far.

It’s not just up front that Watford look great value, though. Flores’ men have conceded just five goals so far – only Spurs and Man City’s backlines have been breached on fewer occasions. Indeed, Watford are the only side yet to concede at home and, having chalked up clean sheets against West Brom, Southampton and Swansea, the likes of Heurelho Gomes, Allan Nyom, Craig Cathcart and Sebastian Prodl offer budget rotation options at just 4.5 apiece.

With Palace, Bournemouth, Stoke and West Ham in the next five, investing in Flores’ main men could well prove a valid tactic as the former Atletico Madrid manager looks to continue his side’s impressive return to the top-flight.

The Talking Point

Back-to-back home wins over Maccabi Tel Aviv and Arsenal have helped spark Chelsea’s flagging season into life and reignited our interest in Jose Mourinho’s key protagonists.

With Eden Hazard opening his account for the campaign in the 2-0 triumph over Arsene Wenger’s outfit, the Belgian is back on the menu as the Blues prepare for a very enticing run of fixtures. Given that Diego Costa could be set for a three-match ban, Hazard’s appeal is heightened at a time where most premium midfield alternatives are toiling – Alexis Sanchez continues to struggle for form, whilst David Silva’s injury worries have kept him sidelined for City’s last two league outings.

Back-to-back clean sheets have also elevated the Blues’ defence after a less-than-impressive opening few matches. With Thibaut Courtois sidelined for the next few weeks, and John Terry no longer a reliable starter, Asmir Begovic (5.0) and Kurt Zouma could soon become the flavour of the month. The latter served up a 15-point return against the Gunners and with Mourinho looking to play a high defensive line, the 5.4-priced Zouma has now started each of the last four Gameweeks. Cesar Azpilicuata, at 6.0, still looks a more secure option, having played from start to finish in all but one of the first six fixtures.

With clashes against Newcastle, Southampton, Villa and West Ham in the following four, Chelsea certainly have the schedule to build on their recent progress and shake up our Fantasy thinking as Mourinho’s men belatedly rediscover their title-winning form.

I very rarely captain in early kickoffs as they tend to be low scoring (ignoring the hammering of spurs last year as Kaboul has left to contaiminate Sunderland).

Have you seen any stats or evidence to back that up? I'm not questioning your view- as a BT Sports owner it actually strikes some chords(!)- but it might play a role in my future thinking if it actually is a thing! Is it not just more likely that the televised games tend to be more even matchups (top of the table clashes etc)?

Interesting. You're probably right. That doesn't change much concerning the advice though. It seldom is wise to captain a player playing a top opponent, so not a one from a top of the table clash. That said, a City attacker against Spurs, yes please.

I've no stats but it seems to be the case in contrast to say evening kick offs on a Saturday or Monday nights, which can be more lively. Sun afternoon kickoffs seem the worst for low scoring drab affairs, maybe because Spurs were in the Europa for the last few years and played on Sundays.

Current FFS theories: don't get Martial because he scores too much, don't get Sanchez because he shoots too much, load up on Chelsea cause they beat 9 men and sell all your Swansea players for only scoring loads of goals this season but not against two of the best defences.

Why are people who said they would never buy Walcott again buying Martial ? . He will probably start the Sunderland game but he could easily make way for Fellaini for arsenal , everton and City . I know the circumstances have changed due to his upturn in form but there is no denying he is a significant risk . Van Gael's logic is different to everyone else and his comments that he won't start every game are being ignored completely . I can see the benefit big boost in t.v and an easy home game but people are ignoring the risks . It's lose lose really if he succeeds the smugness will be unbearable if he fails the moaning will be unbearable

Some say yes, others say he's a young player who Rodgers wisely rested to avoid over-hype and burn-out. Anyone who thinks they know the answer 100% after one game is daft.

But the fixtures turn bad after the next game anyway, that's a better reason to ship him out.

Knee-jerking Gomez out after one game on the bench is a bit of an over-reaction, no? He is young and so is bound to get the odd omission, but at his price -- that's OK, no? If he misses two in a row, maybe it's a cause for real concern but if you've got decent cover in defense, I wouldn't be so quick to lose.

Most people also have a 0.1 of cushion on his price.

Fair point pep. Don't have him myself but if I did, a lot would depend on the state of my bench

Tell me when he'll play next? Exactly you can only speculate and no good holding a player like that.

Don't we usually get the Liverpool line-ups in advance on Fridays?

I am saying he is a 4.5m defender, it's not like he's a 10m forward at risk of not playing.

Unless you have a stash in the bank, you will be replacing him for another low cost defender and those usually aren't really bringing in a heap of points...

The thing is Moreno played brilliantly. So Gomez would have to be on the bench for now.

Gomez can't play as a wingback so I would say the formation is a big factor in whether Gomez starts or not. Atm it looks like 3-4-1-2 will stay

It all depends on the system. In a 3-4-1-2 he cannot offer the necessary width so he won't play IMO.

To be honest, Moreno played well on Sunday. He wasnt fit to start the season (same like Sakho)

but also depends on formation...if 3412 then Moreno will play wing back, the 3 center backs would be Skrtel, Sakho, Can/Lovren

this is lamenting style over substance, a problem there ever has been. like a caveman bringing his ornate stone club down on a sloth's head only to have it shatter and see himself eviscerated

Some substance, like some form, is important for survival, development and so on. And some only concerns your fecking private entertainment. You could as well lament that the porn the other dudes read is classless and just has big-hooter celebrity models and bad camera angles. If stuff like this pisses you off, I recommend taking some time somewhere where people have some real problems.

have 1ft and 0m itb..stick to a 352/433 alternating strategy or revert back to a full time 433 strategy?

    butland
    kolorav azpi jevans
mane hazard mahrez sterling --- chadli
    wilson kun deeney

A: save FT and bench chadli..deeney has a good fixture this gw
    B: sterling + deeney >> sako + martial (-4)
    C: chadli + wilson >> fletcher + martial (-4)

i dont mind the hit...my tv is crap so can build some tv with martial esp if he scores against sunderland..he could be 8.6 by gw8.

only reason i am reluctant to do the transfer is that i rate wilson/deeney as very good value (both on pens, both nailed on) and the fact they rotate perfectly means i can play a 352.

Looking to potential transfers this GW

    Current team is:

    Fabianski McCarthy

    Kolarov Gomez Francis Nyom Targett

    Sanchez YYT Payet Mahrez Westwood

    Kun Gomis Diouf

    ITB £3.4

    Do I?

    A) Gomez > Azpi (No hit)
    B) Diouf > Pelle (No Hit)
    C) Both for a -4 hit

Really want Azpi in my team for the upcoming fixtures and with Diouf doubtful again then not sure he'll get the minutes against Bournemouth although if he plays i reckon he'll score. Not sure if I should wait until GW 9 for Pelle when they play LEI.

    ANy advice would be great.
