The Digest – Gameweek 7

Alexis Sanchez explodes into form with a hat-trick against Leicester. Tottenham’s momentum is building after sweeping aside City, whilst the big hitters are finally starting to deliver. Here’s our thoughts on Gameweek 7 in this week’s Digest…

The Player

A stunning hat-trick in Arsenal’s 5-2 thrashing of Leicester finally announced Alexis Sanchez’ return to Fantasy form this season.

After a sluggish start, mainly brought about by his exertions for Chile in this summer’s Copa America, the Gunners’ wide man eventually translated his superb underlying statistics into Fantasy returns to reward those who patiently stood by his abilities as a heavy-hitter.

One look at last season’s returns highlights Sanchez’ explosive, yet erratic, showings. Somewhat surprisingly, the former Barcelona man produced returns in just 15 of his 35 league outings, blanking on 20 occasions, yet still racked up 16 goals, eight assists and 207 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points in his debut year at the Emirates.

Clearly, then, Sanchez will frustrate us and has the potential to embark on barren runs but has such a strong upside that, as Saturday’s 20-point haul demonstrated, going without him can be a dangerous tactic.

With Arsene Wenger now believing that his star player is finally back to his best, it’s little wonder that Sanchez is the second most transferred-in player since the weekend, as Fantasy managers belatedly scramble for a piece of the action.

The Team

An outstanding comeback win over City on Saturday stretched Tottenham’s unbeaten run to six matches as Mauricio Pochettino’s men moved into sixth spot after seven Gameweeks.

Encouragingly for Spurs and Fantasy managers alike, the club’s form at both ends of the pitch bodes well for future returns. Kevin de Bruyne’s early strike at the Lane is the only goal Pochettino’s side have conceded in the last four, with clean sheets accrued against Everton, Sunderland and Palace over that period. The summer addition of Toby Alderweireld at centre-half, allied with the decision to move Eric Dier into the double-pivot has paid off handsomely in terms of improving resilience, and the duo’s potential at both ends of the pitch was highlighted after they both bagged a goal in the 4-1 thrashing of Manuel Pellegrini’s men.

Crucially for Pochettino, his attack finally seems to have found their form. Spurs went into the weekend having scored just five goals in the first six fixtures but ran riot against City. Harry Kane finally opened his account for the campaign, whilst fit-again Christian Eriksen – who was afforded his first start since Gameweek 2 – has now earned an assist in each of his last three outings. With Erik Lamela chipping in with a goal and assist, and Heung-Min Son’s energy boosting their pressing game in the final third, the north London outfit are starting to click.

The upcoming schedule – which sees that face Swansea, Liverpool, Arsenal, West Ham and Chelsea in the next seven – is by no means easy but, as evidenced on Saturday, Spurs look to have the form and momentum to prevail.

Talking Point

Sanchez and Kane’s return to form was mirrored by Daniel Sturridge as the Liverpool striker netted twice in a 3-2 win over Aston Villa.

Finally back in first-team contention in the previous Gameweek, Sturridge thrived alongside the dynamic Danny Ings as Brendan Rodgers kept faith in his 3-4-1-2 formation. Tellingly, Sturridge played from start to finish against Tim Sherwood’s side, suggesting he’s fast approaching full match sharpness after months on the sidelines.

After a number of weeks where the big hitters have failed to justify their hefty price tags, is the tide starting to turn? So far, the Fantasy games have been dominated by Leicester pair Riyad Mahrez and Jamie Vardy whilst Dimitri Payet has wasted no time in bringing his Marseille form to the Premier League.

Last weekend served a timely reminder, though, that top class talents will prevail and keeping faith in the premium picks can pay off. As Sergio Aguero (NEW, BOU, NOR) and Eden Hazard (SOU, AVL, LIV) both prepare for three home matches in the next four, their loyal owners will be hoping that the duo take their cue from last week’s events and start to justify their premium price tags.

Pulled the trigger on Wilson > Diouf.

I would have loved to go for Jerome, but fact is the cash saved would have faciliated me to do Bentaleb to a 7m midfielder, and other than Tadic there is not really any genuine option at that price and since I have Pelle, I wouldn't have taken Tadic anyway.

Now with Diouf in, I still have 1m ITB, which means I can upgrade Bentaleb to a 5.3 mid, Hoolahan preferably if I want to.

Lets see how it shapes out for me over the next 5-6.

Opinions and criticisms are most welcome.

I have him too, transfered him in but than he got a knock. Glad I kept him. He is fit, and he will start in my opinion. He is their first striker, it;s just that Walters is doing nicely in his abscence. Walters will move to the right I guess, didn't Shagiri just got injured?

Shaqiri was subbed off at half time last week and according to PremierInjuries, he is currently being assesed with no mentioned return date.

As for Walters, he is not a striker by any means, he plays mostly on the flanks and sometimes centrally. Though he scored a hat-trick for me last season against QPR when playing as their makeshift striker. 😉

I dont think gametime will be much of an issue for him, though would like to know why you think it will be an issue ?

As for whether he can stay fit, he does not really have any serious injury history, he did have a devastating 13/14 season for Hannover, where he played only 1 game whole season. But other than that, he never really had any problem with fitness.

Just quite a few options for the one striker spot at Stoke. Agree that Diouf is number one currently. A couple of blanks though and maybe the other strikers scoring in the cups that could change.

Don't get me wrong though, I'm happy with him in my team

Yea true, can definitely happen tbh.

But I cannot see him getting pushed to the bench entirely in the next 5-6, though he might be pushed out wide on occasions or might get subbed between 65-75 minute mark for Joselu especially.

You're really not gna go with any City coverage bar Kolarov? I would get at least a mid, KDB/Silva. Think there are better options in the GK department for cheaper than Cech. This site loves Myhill but he is a legitimately good pick. Means you can get in Bellerin/Monreal in instead of Cresswell.

I would be scared not owning Aguero lol

I don't know what your team value is, but I think you can do a lot better than his. I also believe the Mane Pelle double up is too much, and Hazard doesn't seem to be worth the money even if the fixtures improve over the coming weeks. Luckily you have the CL to see how he performs, but I wouldn't go near him at that price. No attacking City player is ballsy, but also probably unwise.
As for Cech, there are cheap goalkeepers who perform similarly for less money, and I don't fancy Ighalo to do well.

      Hope this helps you!

Just been looking into Southampton's 3 main attacking options comparing home vs away form.
Since the beginning of last season, the stats are as follows:

    Home
    Apps Mins Goals Assists
    Pelle 23 2139 14 3
    Tadic 20 1416 5 6
    Mane 23 1514 8 5

    Away
    Apps Mins Goals Assists
    Pelle 22 1973 2 1
    Tadic 17 1235 2 2
    Mane 21 1240 3 1

Southampton as a whole scored 45 goals at home vs only 19 away in this period.
Teams are generally less attacking playing away from home, but this is a huge gulf.
Is it crazy to look for rotation options for these players if you have them?

I know that Pelle doesn't perform away from home, so rotating might be a good idea yeah! Their focus on defence also make the defenders stand out and take the BPS, so you idea is not crazy at all. Very sensible.

I have the same exact in mind. Mane has scored 1 and assisted 4 in his last 3 home games this season and I believe blanked away. Southampton have Leicester, Bournemouth and Stoke at home. I would be upgrading Westwood to Mane after the Chelsea game which means I can bench Ighalo against Arsenal

    4. PurpleCobras
      • 9 Years

      Particularly pronounced for Pelle...

Surely they're all a little too expensive to rotate?

      1. ItOnlyTook9Years

Maybe, overall though, I would think twice about playing them away from home and therefore getting them at all.
I have Mane and probably won't play him against Chelsea based on this.

      It currently looks like this:

      Bego / Rajko
      Carvajal / Giménez / Smolnikov / Debuchy / X
      De Bruyne / Cazorla / Gusev / X / X
      Cristina / Lewandoski / Hulk

Xs appearing via autocomplete. I still have plenty to tinker, but the things that look like a must to me are Crissy and someone else from R. Madrid, some München, 2x Zenit since they have two home fixtures. And that's it, I might change everything in a few hours.

    Play my chip or not?!?

Currently my defence is a bit of a mess as Gomez, Muniesa and Targett have all lost their place, however not owning Payet vs sunderland this weekend scares me, what to do?:

    A: Gomez ---> WBA defender (-4)
B: 5th MID Westwood ---> Payet (Play my All out Attack Chip) (-4)

    B would give me:

    Butland
    Kolarov, Francis
    Payet, Sanchez, Ayew, Mahrez, KDB
    Aguero, Igahlo, Vardy

I get the Payet fear - I feel it too.

Good fixtures for the AoA chip actually. But once you play it, you'll still be left with 3 non-starters in defence in next week...playing the AoA chip doesn't solve that problem - i'm sure you're very aware of that!

A WBA defender would be good long term. Then again, not very sure if WBA defender in this week is worth the hit.

Not helping I know...but probably B between the 2 evils, has a higher ceiling for sure.

Everyone is saying that Vardy is THE forward to own give me mixed feelings. I might be wrong, but despite is actual form and good fixtures coming, I don't see him continuing like he did recently.

That's why I won't transfer him. I prefer look for a differential. I also might stike with Gomis. He's the only real striker at Swansea, although he's been awful recently, this guy has never been consistent, even with Lyon, going from games where he's taken off after 45 minutes to games where he is the man of the match. I could surprise some FPL managers against Spurs.

      Hi mate,

Your defense is too expensive imo, I would downgrade Alaba/Pique and upgrade your midfield; Costa seems the only solid mid from that lot. But I guess it depends on your approach and when you plan to WC.

Also, I think I'd rather have Iturbe from Roma as a mid than Salah.

What do you think of this lot, WC MD3:

      Lodygin - Eric
      Manolas - Bernat - Masuaku - Bellerin - Carvajal
      Zahavi - Danny - D. Costa - Pjanic - KDB
      Ronaldo - Martial - Lewandowski

Haha because I really like Pjanic and had the funds for him. I was only suggesting a similar-priced attacking player from Roma that doesn't take a forward spot from your team. Iturbe should play up front with Dzeko out.
