Scout Picks

Scout Picks – Gameweek 8

It’s time for the eighth set of Scout Picks for 2015/16 this evening before the second international break is upon us. We triple up on Man City for their home encounter with Newcastle, whilst West Ham and Bournemouth supply us with a couple of players apiece as we keep faith in a 3-5-2 formation.

For the start of the season, the budget for the Scout Picks and Community XI is capped at 82.5m, though this will be increased as the campaign progresses.

West Ham’s Adrian earns his place between the posts away to a Sunderland side that has drawn blanks in each of the last three Gameweeks. Given that the Hammers have conceded just once on their travels, despite facing Arsenal, Liverpool and Man City, the chances of a shut-out against the basement-dwellers look strong.

Aleksandar Kolarov comes in for City’s home clash with Newcastle. The Magpies have failed to score in any of their three away matches under Steve McClaren, whilst the Serbian’s raids down the left means he leads the way for shots (12) and is joint-top for key passes (also 12) amongst defenders.

Scott Dann’s threat in the box has already helped the Palace centre-half serve up a goal and assist in six appearances. Having registered a clean sheet and maximum bonus at Watford last week, he now faces a West Brom side that’s scored just twice in their three road trips.

Simon Francis plays hosts to a Watford outfit that’s drawn blanks in four of the first seven Gameweeks. The Bournemouth right-back has equalled Kolarov for chances created this season and has also chipped in with two assists and four bonus points for Eddie Howe’s side.

Kevin de Bruyne’s eye for goal ensures the Belgian keeps his place in the Scout Picks midfield. Having scored in three of his first four starts in all competitions for City, we’re backing the in-form summer signing over fit-again David Silva for Newcastle’s visit tomorrow.

Dimitri Payet is our West Ham attacker of choice for the trip to basement-dwellers Sunderland. The Frenchman has served up 29 points in three appearances since Slaven Bilic moved to a 4-2-3-1, playing a part in four of his side’s six goals over that period. Given that the Black Cats have conceded more times (16) than any other side and the Hammers are joint-top for goals scored (15), Payet’s owners could be in line for more returns.

Chelsea’s home clash with Southampton brings Eden Hazard into consideration. The Belgian has produced returns in each of the last two Gameweeks – including a ten-point haul in his previous home appearance – and will fancy his chances up against the Saints’ attack-minded right-back Cedric Soares.

We’re avoiding Riyad Mahrez and instead turn to Norwich playmaker Wes Hoolahan as the pair go head-to-head at Carrow Road. The Republic of Ireland international has played a part in three of his side’s four home goals this season and has produced more assists (five) than any player in the top-flight. At a price of 5.1, he faces a Foxes side that’s failed to keep out their opponents in the first seven outings.

With Callum Wilson sidelined, Matt Ritchie’s contribution will be vital as Bournemouth entertain Watford. The Scot – who scored in his previous home appearance – fired five attempts against Stoke last weekend and has now produced 17 efforts for the season; that’s on a par with Santi Cazorla and just one less than Juan Mata, for example.

Five goals in the last four Gameweeks brings Jamie Vardy into our starting XI. Having produced points in six of his seven appearances, the Leicester forward has the chance to justify his recent bandwagon against a Norwich side without a clean sheet to their name. In terms of shots inside the box over the last four, Vardy leads Riyad Mahrez by 14 shots to four, highlighting his importance to the Foxes’ cause.

Last but not least is Sergio Aguero. Will this be the Gameweek where his season finally kick-starts into life? Having scored the midweek winner over Wolfsburg, there’s hope that the runaway leader of this week’s Captain Poll can finally show his class and put the Magpies’ porous backline to the sword, as City attempt to recover from back-to-back league defeats.

Villa’s raiding left-back Jordan Amavi makes the bench for a home encounter against Stoke. The Frenchman produced his second assist in four Gameweeks against Liverpool last time out, whilst the Potters have drawn blanks in three of the opening seven matches.

Ross Barkley comes in for Everton’s home derby clash with Liverpool. Brendan Rodgers’ men have conceded nine times in the last four now and the Toffees’ playmaker has impressed in front of his own fans, earning a couple of nine point-returns in the first three at Goodison.

Having scored Villa’s last three goals in all competitions, Rudy Gestede looks in fine form. At just 5.8, the Benin international entertains a Stoke side that’s yet to keep out their opponents in the absence of injured skipper Ryan Shawcross.

THE COMMUNITY CHAMPION

Having scrapped the weekly vote idea from last season, we now operate a lottery system to pick our weekly candidates. The community member who beats our picks by the biggest margin over the campaign will win a £100 Amazon Voucher and a place in our Contributors and Moderators League for the following season.

Last week saw The Blue of Leicester trump us by 11 points, though he failed to overhaul Massive (16 points) in the race to claim a £100 Amazon voucher for beating the Scouts by the biggest margin.

This week’s Community champions is Supersonic. Now in his 10th season of FPL management he is a wily veteran, finishing last season in 386th and with two other top 10,000 finishes under his belt. He has also opted for a 3-5-2 but has picked just three of the same starting XI: Hart, Alderweireld, Cresswell, Francis, Hazard, Sterling, Silva, Mata, Payet, Sakho, Pelle.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

PL matches goal supremacy spreads for the weekend (from Spreadex)

    Palace/West Brom 0.6-0.8
    Villa/Stoke 0-0.2
    Bournemouth/Watford 0.3-0.5
    Man C/Newcastle 2-2.2
    Norwich/Leicester 0.2-0.4
    West Ham/Sunderland(h) 0.05-0.25
    Chelsea/Southampton 0.65-0.85
    Everton/Liverpool -0.1-0.1
    Arsenal/Man U 0.4-0.6
    Swansea/Spurs 0-0.2

    Player goal minute spreads (selected)

    Aguero 46-50
    KDB 21-24
    Sanchez 18-21
    Hazard 15-18
    Silva 15-18
    Vardy 15-18
    Payet 14-17
    Martial 13-16
    Mahrez 12-15
    Mata 11-14

Supremacy = The spread bet on how many goals team A will beat team B by.

Goal minutes = The spread of the total number of goalscoring minutes for the player, e.g if a player scores in the 40th and 80th minute, the make up will be 120. If a player doesn't score, make up will be zero.

Ok - take Palace v West Brom - the spread is 0.6-0.8

If you fancy Palace to win by less than 0.6 goals, you would sell @ 0.6 at, say, a stake of £5.
If, for example, West Brom win by 1 goal, you would win 1.6 x your stake (i.e £8)
If, for example, Palace win by 2 goals, you would lose 1.4 x your stake (i.e £7)

If you fancy Palace to win by more than 0.8 goals, you would buy @ 0.8 at, say, a stake of £5.
If, for example, Palace win by 1 goal, you would win 0.2 x your stake (i.e £1)
If, for example, the match finished as a draw, you would lose 0.8 x your stake (i.e £4)

The spread is a range. For example, goal supremacy will be how many goals team A will beat team B by (as Jarvish says above).

If we take an imaginary match of Man City vs the local Sunday league team, we'd expect City to dominate.

The goal range of goals that City would expect to score would probably be about 10 to 15 goals. This means that the spread is about 10 to 15.

If teams are fairly equal then although there could be loads of goals in the game, it could be tight meaning that the spread is very low, say 0.2 to 0.5. There can't be a 0.5 of a goal I hear you say, but this is just a value. The magnitude of the values shows how closely matched they are.

The goal minutes means as Jarvish explained. This is a combination of how likely they are to score and how often. The higher the better.

If a player is expected to score once then his minutes would be about 45 (could be any time during the game but the midway point makes the most sense). If twice, then the 30 min mark and the 60 min mark. This totals to 90 mins.

Anything around the 15+ mark means that they're about 30% expected to get a goal (that's maths in my head though so it could be slightly off).

        Hope that helps.

Payet in for Yaya for a hit?

Or play Sinclair and bench Yaya?

The final call: Mahrez/Vardy V/S Aguero? Whom would you put the armband on?

    A) Mahrez/Vardy:

    PROS
    - Haven't disappointed at all (Mahrez..10+ in 5/7 GWs)
    - Consistent: Except vs arsenal, only time Mahrez delivered 1 point is when he got off injured and could have had a penalty if he was on the field
    - Play in a v.attacking side
    - V/S NOR who are susceptible to conceding goals vs attacking opposition (see sou 3 goals, whu 2 goals, palace 3 goals, liv 1 goal)
    - CONS: NOR have some good defensive HOME stats (similar to NEW's away stats) but v/s okaish opposition

    B) Aguero
    PROS
    - Simply because it looks like he's due. He can't keep on shooting with low SoT and keep on missing BCs like he has done until now
    - Silva is back behind in no.10 & game is at the Etihad
    - V/S a seemingly poor NEW side who conceded 2 in 5/7 games
    CONS
    - NEW killing big teams. Drew v/s united at OT, 2 goals v/s Chelsea, barely lost v/s Arsenal
    - NEW Away has decent defensive stats

I like what I have done in general. More or less sorted, 5 big guns in midfield, crappy keepers and lightweight defence. Should do well

I can't believe there are people enthusiastic enough about FPL that they use this site yet didn't go out and transfer out the likes of Wilson straight away but are still considering it for this week.

For me that is the kind of situation where you have to make an early decision either stick for some strategic reason and accept the price loses or make the change as soon as the player you are swapping to is safe from harm to avoid price losses and get price gains after everyone else does the same thing.

£7.2M to spend on a striker, who would you choose?

Currently have a front 8 of
    Payet - Sanchez - KdB - Mahrez
    Aguero - Martial - X

Ighalo imo. Some people will say Vardy but I see Leicester doing a Swansea
