This Much We Know – Gameweek 8

Sergio Aguero and Alexis Sanchez serve a timely reminder of their world class talents. Kevin de Bruyne strengthens his claim as a must-have big hitter but Eden Hazard’s toils continue. Riyad Mahrez’ Fantasy potential could be curtailed by The Tinkerman, Christian Eriksen steps up his consistency, whilst Sadio Mane looks a major differential.

Class is permanent with Aguero and Sanchez…
After Alexis Sanchez set the tone with a hat-trick against Leicester last week, Sergio Aguero’s five-goal haul against Newcastle underlined why, in certain cases, it’s provident to be patient with big hitters. The duo banished their stuttering starts and have exploded into form simultaneously, scoring six goals apiece in the last week in all competitions. It’s been a long time coming but, finally, the South American pair look back to their blistering best – going without either of them now looks a very dangerous tactic.

…and De Bruyne deserves his big hitter status…
Three goal and two assists in a trio of league starts has underlined why City were prepared to splash the cash on the former Chelsea wide man. De Bruyne has played a part in five of City’s last eight goals, strengthening his claim as the leading contender amongst Manuel Pellegrini’s midfield. A double-up with Sanchez in the centre of the park is quickly becoming the preferred tactic for many, with the Belgian’s explosive potential looking increasingly difficult to ignore.

Chelsea’s toils aren’t helping Hazard…
Whilst Sanchez and Aguero finally translated their underlying numbers into points, the situation is a little different for Chelsea’s big hitter. Jose Mourinho’s side look alarmingly short of form and Hazard’s Fantasy potential has suffered significantly as a result, with the Belgian offering little evidence to suggest he can arrest his recent malaise. With Sanchez and De Bruyne key targets, Hazard looks surplus to requirement as we look to free up budget.

…whilst Pedro’s minutes need monitored…
The Spaniard’s owners were placed on high alert after he was omitted from the starting XI for the first time this term by Jose Mourinho. Replacement Willian vindicated his manager’s decision, though, by scoring for the third successive match in all competitions, with Pedro only handed minutes at the break due to the Brazilian’s withdrawal through illness. Now down to 9.3, Pedro is second only to Yaya Toure amongst midfielders for transfers out this week and with the international break now upon us, that exodus looks likely to pick up pace.

Sako’s star is fading fast…
Similar to Pedro, the Palace summer signing’s immediate impact has quickly died out, leaving him warming the Selhurst Park bench against West Brom last weekend. Alan Pardew’s decision to turn to last year’s attacking midfield trio, Yannick Bolasie, Wilfried Zaha and Jason Puncheon, paid off as the Eagles soared into fourth spot. Back-to-back spot-kicks from Yohan Cabaye highlights the numerous options within the Selhurst Park midfield but Sako’s name may be struck from that list, if Saturday’s team sheet is anything to go by.

Ranieri’s tinkering could derail Mahrez’ season…
The Leicester manager reminded us just why he’s known as “The Tinkerman” by surprisingly dropping Riyad Mahrez to the bench for the trip to Norwich. Frustratingly for Fantasy managers, Ranieri’s decision paid off as the Foxes recovered from their Gameweek 7 home loss to Arsenal by defeating the Canaries at Carrow Road. Sitting in 54% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) sides, we may have to reconsider Mahrez if Ranieri feels he can get away with omitting the Algerian on occasion, with Jamie Vardy looking far more secure by comparison.

There’s no shortage of Wilson replacements…
As the Callum Wilson exodus picks up pace, a number of budget options threw their hat in the ring at the weekend. Glenn Murray scored once and missed a penalty on his first start in Wilson’s absence for Bournemouth, whilst Odion Ighalo continues to look like Watford’s only source of goals – the 5.3-priced frontman’s fifth of the season was accompanied by maximum bonus, taking him to fourth overall amongst strikers. With Aleksandar Mitrovic finding the net at City ahead of Newcastle’s kind upcoming schedule, there are still plenty of budget differentials to consider for those looking to free up cash.

Mane is starting to motor…
A goal and assist away to Chelsea highlighted the Southampton midfielder’s fixture-proof appeal as the schedule starts to turn in his favour. Whilst Graziano Pelle sits in 18% of FPL sides, Mane remains a real differential – just 6% of managers have taken the plunge on a player who has delivered two goals and five assists in his last four starts. The Saints have now put eight past Swansea, United and Chelsea in the previous three and with Dusan Tadic also in decent form, investment in the St Mary’s outfit looks top of many agendas.

A consistent Eriksen adds more to the midfield mix…
One goal in the final 15 Gameweeks of 2014/15 is indicative of how frustrating the Tottenham midfielder can be as a Fantasy asset. Sunday’s two-goal haul at Swansea, however, suggests Eriksen may be a little more reliable this time around – having recovered from injury, he’s now produced returns in four of his five league appearances so far. With four home clashes and a trip to Bournemouth in the next six, can the Dane justify that 8.3 price tag and barge his way into our five-man midfields?

Lukaku is tempting…
Despite a horrendous opening schedule, the Everton frontman sits third amongst strikers after racking up three goals and an assist against West Brom and Liverpool since last Monday. Whereas the likes of West Ham, Leicester, Southampton and Swansea have viable goal scoring alternatives in the centre of the park, Ross Barkley’s recent lack of form heightens Lukaku’s importance to the Toffees’ cause. Whilst the playmaker blanked for the fifth time in six league matches, the big Belgian is starting to pick up pace as the main Everton target ahead of their superb run of fixtures from Gameweek 11 onwards.

We shouldn’t write Ayew off…
Back in the goals against Spurs at the Liberty, the Ghana international rewarded his 20% owners by climbing into the top five midfielder placings. Ayew banished a three-match barren streak to notch for the third time in four home appearances as Garry Monk’s men finally rediscovered their scoring touch at a time when Bafetimbi Gomis’ toils continue. Although many who doubled-up on the Swansea pair are looking to part company with the misfiring Frenchman, Ayew, at 7.2, seems worth retaining for now.

Theo is looking undroppable …
It’s five straight starts in the league now for the England international, with Olivier Giroud once again consigned to a bench-warming berth. Tellingly, Walcott kept his place up top despite the fact that Giroud was suspended for midweek Champions League duties – dispelling the notion that Arsene Wenger would alternate on a regular basis. It’s two goals and three assists in the last three across all competitions now for Walcott, whose speed and movement up top have helped the Gunners score ten times over those fixtures – given his side’s outstanding form, Wenger will surely be very reluctant to change things for the Gameweek 9 visit to Watford.

Defensive options. I have a budget of 5.3 so thinking out loud. (Keep in mind i have 0.7M in the bank and Richards and Gomez to boot)

Gabriel - Currently my number one contender and the Arsenal fans i have spoken to are convinced he won't lose his spot. He's got decent BAPS scores as well and decent fixtures. EVE swa and TOT are a little off putting after the wat fixture but he's got wba nor SUN and avl after that. Good medium term investment albeit a little risky. Also he gives me 4.9 to upgrade my other defender. He does come up during corners as well.

Bertrand - Great short to medium term fixtures. He's pricey at 5.3M and does not allow me more than 4.5M for my next defender. Good attacking potential but Southampton don't look as sound defensively as last year. I could wait until after liv to pounce on him since they are bound to concede against LEI and Liv. After that, he's got a great clean run which includes BOU sun STK AVL cpl

Cedric - Same as Bertrand albeit a little bit cheaper. Only problem is he could be a little prone to rotation.

Janmaat - He is firmly in my thoughts but Newcastle are just so unpredictable. He's a gamble and with me being so tight on funds in defence, its a huge risk to gamble on Janmaat. His fixtures are incredibly good and is Newcastle's best attacking outlet. NOR sun STK bou LEI (Ideally he should get 2 cleanies from this lot of fixtures atleast) but he just doesn't inspire confidence. Especially after a 6-1 beating.

Dier/Toby - Great bap and attacking potential. He's got great fixtures after LIV this week. bou AVL ars WHU CHE wba NEW. Can easily see 4-5 clean sheets in there. Both nailed on and definitely on my radar. Dier is done with his 5 yellows as well so looks good to come in.

Davies - My go to option if i go Bertrand instead of Gabriel. How nailed on is he? Does Pochettino rotate much? How has he played? If i know he's nailed, i'd be tempted to go Bertrand over Gabriel.

Currently my thinking is to draft in Gabriel immediately and wait and watch before getting Bertrand/Cedric/Janmaat/Tottenham boys in. Gabriel has a good next fixture and looks like a good medium term pick. It will give me good time to analyze whether Newcastle can defend and while give more clarity on the nailed-on-ness of Davies and Cedric.

    What do you lot think?

Yes but Gabriel has been solid. I really believe that Kos + Gabriel will start league games when all 3 CBs are fit.

Maybe Mert to start CL or cup.

I have Cedric, he was benched against United because he can't defend well but that ended horribly with Yoshida in his place. He's an attacking 5M RB who plays for Soton and who could still get you a couple of assists; i have him and for now i'm keeping him.

      Don't get Janmaat.

    Bit of a dilemma.......

I'm 2nd in my ML, 4 points behind 1st with 3 other players within 18 points. £1000 total prize pot with 10% of the pot going to the 1st quarter winner. GW9 is the last game of the quarter.

    Should I
    A. Triple Captain Aguero
    B. Triple Captain Sanchez
    C. Neither, wait for a DGW

I'm know the changes are C would probably get me more points but £100 would be nice. Almost certain one the others will go with triple captain and may not find myself up there for the other quarters

im thinking about taking a 12 point hit to get aguero the guy im meeting in my H2H league doesent have the best team so i could win with a 12 point hit.
i have already made one change yaya > mane

    my team
    de gea myhill

    sagna bellerin francis kolarov smalling

    sanchez walcott mane mahrez ayew

    sturridge ighalo vardy

    bank 1.9

    so im thinking
    myhill >hennesy
    sagna >moreno
    sturridge > aguero

i will then have 0.3 if i do it today
so it can get close on the money if i wait it out
i kind of need some city offense in my team and would have both aguero and sanchez to make captain

or i can wait and see how sturridge perfome over the next gameweeks and see if i want aguero after they have meet man U but then money could be an issue

You have far too much money invested in GK and DEF.

If you have a WC I'd use it now and downgrade some of those defenders for a much more balanced strike force.

Otherwise, you either take a 12 pt hit or go with the defenders you evidently felt were worth going Aguero-less for in the first place.

You live up to your name, I'm afraid. Those moves go from dumb to dumber.

McCarthy, Oxford, Richards and Emnes all need to be shifted cos you have no bench to speak of.

Depth is important in fantasy games because injuries are very real and can affect your starters at any time.

Personally, I'd look at replacing the players who aren't earning you any points and won't be earning you any in the future before shifting out players who are earning you points for ones who might earn you a few more.

That's the bonus of Aguero in a strange kind of way. If he gets injured suddenly you have funds to strengthen and can afford decent replacements. However Agueroless = fpl suicide.

Its do-able and allows 3 other city assets; say Kompany, KDB and Silva. Money saved allows you a strikeforce of Vardy, Pelle and Lukaku. Aguero will have reduced gametime through injuries and Champions league interest.

      1. C-Dawgg
        • 9 Years
        8 years, 8 months ago

Yeah basically this, Aguero can score heavily but he's only realistically going to average a goal every 1 and a half games at best.

I'm not saying it's bad to have him but you can build one hell of a team without him.

          • 10 Years

Secret to this game is getting players who hover up the bonus points. Kuns 13.5m won't accrue a huge no. of them whereas say Lukaku and Vardy are binus whores for much less cost.

            • 11 Years

Can't understand why him and Lucas as so highly rated by Liverpool fans. He's a decent attacking midfielder, but talks of moving to Barcelona? Please.

He's scored some good long-range goals, very entertaining when he does but for a top club you'd really expect him to be doing better. Put it this way, Sigurdsson has more goals and the same amount of assist in the same amount of time played for lower clubs.

Coutinho is a great player with a lot of potential yet to be expressed. Lucas is notoriously known as one of the most fake brazilian players of the last 15 years(not a Liverpool fan but a Brazil fan since i was a kid).

If you're expecting Coutinho to be Neymar you're going to be disappointed but that doesn't mean he's not a great player. If he were surrounded by better players(especially behind him) and if he were playing in a team with more consistency his overall performances would improve quite a lot.

I wouldn't have him in FPL.

With the right manager, though, he could turn into a very good player. Rodgers basically plays football like Ray Wilkins, all sideways passing from the back.

I think someone like Klopp or Ancelotti could improve him into a really creative midfielder.

Coutiniho is not overrated he just plays (sorry played) for Rogers. All Liverpool players are now into the unknown and could suddenly become really valuable. Only time will tell
On that. Put him in a very good side and you might see his real potential. Until then I will personally steer clear until I see some glimmers of hope and consistency.

I do think with a better management style Coutinho could get the returns to reflect the expectations on him, but even so he does himself no justice with his own technical game; i.e. often greedy on the ball, tries to do to much instead of playing a simple pass.

I'm not saying he's bad, I just don't think he's even near playing in a Barcelona side

Certainly. He is young and I don't think Rogers got the best from him. Barcelona is a long way off.

He's an 8, not a 10 so looking at his goals and assists output to make a final judgement is the deciding factor. Iniesta for example, is an 8 too. And people confuse him to be a 10. Coutinho is the same. The role of an 8 is to create chances, dictate play, open up the pitch and quite frankly Coutinho does that well.

He's 23 and has a lot to learn, but he is really good. 'Overrated' and 'underrated' are thrown about a lot. Who underrates/overrated players? Fans, media, fantasy football scout memebers? Its more to do with appreciating a good player both ways. And Coutinho is exciting to watch, no doubt. Everyone has their judgements.

Rafinha, is 22 and plays for Barcelona. He operates as an 8 in games too. We'd all agree that Coutinho is better than him. So a Barca move, as strange as it seems, May not be that far off. Not that many 8's who can operate as 10's left.

The talk of Coutinho to Barcelona started with Neymar.

It's understandable because they always hype up one of their own.

Pele once said Messi need to surpassed Neymar to be one of the best in football.

OPTA appear to have taken the 2 off he got in GW4, and added 2 for this week.

I may be wrong - I don't actually know how they do it yet. But that is my reckoning.

And don't forget, number of goals and assists scored. In a fantasy sport that lacks a great number of fantasy point outcome measures, we are often left to rely on the power of underlying stats as correlates or predictors of goals and assists. In a sport where few goals are scored, the underlying stats can at times be an unreliable indicator of fantasy points.

Are you looking at a -4 or -8? I'd be inclined to wait, or if price rise/fall is an issue, make one now and wait on the others. A lot can happen on international duty and you may well wish you had waited.

-8 and - 4 without Bellerin. I'll probably wait because international break is really unpredictable. And I still don't know what to do with Kompany and Azpi, both are so expensive. I could've use this money better. Thanks for advice 🙂

One of the many reasons why he's been a great manager for 10+ years is because he is a terrible loser. I'm no Chelsea fan, but I hope the club have patience with Mourinho.
