The Digest – Gameweek 8

Southampton’s display at Stamford Bridge serves notice of their potential ahead of some kind upcoming fixtures. Meanwhile, Sergio Aguero and Alexis Sanchez’ simultaneous return to form turns the Fantasy landscape on its head.

The Player

A five-goal blitz in just 20 minutes against Newcastle last Saturday served a telling reminder of Sergio Aguero’s talents as the Argentine cast aside his early-season toils emphatically.

There’s no doubt that Aguero had tested our collective patience. At a time where many mid-price frontman were flourishing, the City striker’s single goal and assist over the first seven Gameweeks were a major concern.

You only had to look at the underlying stats for reassurance, though. Between Gameweek 1-7, he was firing an effort every 19.7 minutes – almost on a par with last year’s 17.9 minutes per shot. Even his frequency of key passes (82.2 minutes compared to 80.1) was more or less identical.

Whereas last term, he netted 17.6% of his efforts on his way to 26 goals and ten assists, Aguero had scored just 4% of his shots before Steve McClaren’s boys paid visit last weekend, spurning all but one of his previous 25 attempts.

There were hints this was coming, though. Three goals and four assists over the previous international break for Argentina. Eight attempts and a late winner in City’s midweek Champions League win in Wolfsburg. Aguero was getting the chances.

In a season that’s proven unpredictable, Saturday’s 50-point armband haul shows just why Aguero is the one real must-have frontman for most Fantasy managers around these parts. With Bournemouth, Norwich and Villa in the next four Gameweeks alone, the bandwagon is in full flow as those who’d braved the Magpies match without him scramble for a belated piece of the action.

The Team

A 3-1 win over Chelsea at the Bridge heaped further pressure on Jose Mourinho as the Saints moved into the top half of the table for the first time this term.

After a slow start, blighted by a number of first-team departures over the summer, Ronald Koeman’s side have finally settled into their groove. The St Mary’s outfit have racked up eight goals in the last three matches, which also includes clashes with Swansea and Man United, and look well-stocked with form options to consider. Impressively, Graziano Pelle has played a part in ten (five goals, five assists) of their 13 goals for the season, whilst Sadio Mane’s two goals and five assists in four starts perhaps gives him the edge over Dusan Tadic in the centre of the park.

At the back, the return of Ryan Bertrand and addition of Virgil van Dijk has helped Koeman’s men rediscover the resilience which saw them concede just 33 times last term. Aside from their 3-2 reverse at home to United in Gameweek 6, Southampton have conceded a combined total of two goals in five of the last six Gameweeks – both came from dead-ball situations, a Gylfi Sigurdsson penalty and Willian free-kick.

Encouragingly, the about-turn in form arrives at a time when the fixtures smile very kindly on the Saints. Over the next eight Gameweeks, Koeman’s side are afforded four eye-catching home clashes (LEI, BOU, STO, AVL) and also travel to Sunderland and Palace. Investment at both ends of the pitch could well pay off, then, as they look build momentum on the back of their Chelsea destruction.

The Talking Point

Aguero’s return to scoring form arrives at a time where Alexis Sanchez has also banished his own barren run to rack up the goals for Arsenal. The Chilean followed up last week’s hat-trick at Leicester with a brace against United to soar up the Fantasy standings after a similarly sluggish start to 2015/16.

Taking the midweek Champions League matches into consideration, the South American duo have scored six times apiece in their last three appearances. Few, if any, top-flight talents can match that explosive potential and it’s fair to say that their recent resurgence has shaken up the Fantasy landscape.

Those who filled their 15-man squads with mid-price and budget form players, thus choosing to ignore one or both of Aguero and Sanchez, now face a major restructuring program if they are to bring the pair on board. Indeed, it’s no real surprise that the duo lead the way for transfers-in this week in the FPL game.

In this most unpredictable of seasons, there’s a reassuring sense of normality settling in once again. Those who have steadfastly held onto both and kept faith in the underlying numbers have been finally rewarded – it’s perhaps no coincidence that this recent turnaround has helped the Fantasy Football Scout leagues climb the leaderboards, an indication of our community’s faith in the big hitters.

Yes, it’s a belated victory for the so-called “template” approach. A triumph that’s been somewhat tainted by those preceding weeks of frustration and uncertainty but we’ll take it anyway. After suffering for the first two months, you could almost say we deserve it.

1FT, 1.1 ITB and I want to get rid of Gomez and Coutinho (why did I pick him over Payet 2 weeks ago). Would you:

    A) Gomez -> Bellerin/Bertrand/ or other defender up to 5.8
    B) Coutinho -> Mane (also considering Payet but thinking Mane is more of a differential)
    C) Both A & B for -4

      A

Coutinho has more chance of starting under Klopp, if it is indeed he who takes over from Brenda, and could well flourish with a decent manager.

Bellerin (or Monreal) nailed on and good for BAPs and cleanies.

Investing in the Sunderland defence this season is on a par with investing in our (QPR) defence last season. Just don't do it

With a (don't laugh) must win game at home to Bayern the following Tuesday, could we see Wenger start Giroud away at Watford? Was toying with Pedro -> Wally this week, but this is a concern.

Only around European games imo. Wally is clearly first choice at the moment, so unless his form drops he will start imo. But 3 games in 7 days may lead to Wenger giving him a rest - he probably thinks he can beat Watford with Giroud (and he's probably right).

After looking at the stats it seems that A is a better move than B, would you agree?

    A: Ayew ---> Mane
    B: Ighalo ---> Pelle

-Mainly because Ighalo's goal threat in the last 4 games has almost been as good as Pelle's, whilst Ayew's has been very poor compared to Mane's dazzling stats

I'm holding too, but just really pissed how fpl towers run this show.
I can't find anything saying that something has changed in his situation and Iwas happily waiting for further news before next match.

There was no fear of another price drop before they changed flag - who knows, there might be 50k stupid enough to transfer him out for Mane, KDB, Sanchez before next press conference.
And if they kept him red flagged, price would have been protected if he's fit - now I can see price drop before next deadline even if he's fit.

Every 0.1 counts and I was prepared to take only 0.1 loss on my selling value 🙂

I've seen a few comments on here lately about ditching Mahrez and I can only conclude that those people considering this option are stark raving mad!

As a Leicester fan I can tell you that every time he plays he is the class act on the field. He ghosts around defenders, his delivery is phenomenal and he also takes free kicks and penalties. Last season he looked great without always having the end product but this year he's added that to his game. I'll be amazed if we can hold on to him as I'm sure he's now on the radar of the bigger clubs.

In fantasy terms he's still an absolute bargain even if he isn't already in your team. I know it is crucial to have guaranteed starters but do not be fooled by one omission from the starting line up, Claudio knows full well that he is our best player and he'll be straight back in if fit next time out.

    Keep the Algerian Messi!

I understood it was more to avoid him getting tired, which was probably wise, seen that when on field he either assists or takes about 50% of Leicester's shots. They're going to need him more in the next match.

Thoughts on Mahrez -> Mane if you have a spare £2m

For context, I also have Vardy and no Southampton cover, whilst a little concerned about Mahrez's minutes going forward after Saturday, plus his ability to maintain early season form.

    Thoughts?

    Midfield would be:

To be fair, a lack of clean sheets - and especially Kolarov ones! - have given everyone poor scores in defence.

Kolarov and Dawson have been my only source of returns. Oh and one clean sheet from Bego

Wildcard owners, are you playing it in a couple of weeks?

Very tempted just to do it now, but want to catch the good fixtures for Everton and hopefully take advantage of some better form at Liverpool and Chelsea.

If you need to play it now, just get a couple of those Everton players in, in advance.

I'm doing a punt in Wijnaldum, priced like Barkley. If not successful, the switch is simple in # GW11.

I also think of Howard in goal.

Funny how people suddenly consider shipping out Mahrez. Absolutely no reason whatsoever to get rid of him yet. One game rotated is not that horrible. Really want to emphasize the importance of strong bench cover such situations.

        Swings and roundabouts really.

I think they'll score quite similarly over the next 6 GW's. I can understand people going of Mané, though, as h has form and Mahrez has cooled off a bit (which was inevitable really).

Mané is a bandwagon just starting so lots of people ready to jump on early.

      Butland, McCarthy
      Kolarov, Cresswell, Richards, Evans, Gomez
      Sanchez, KDB, Payet, Mahrez, Sinclair
      Aguero, Pelle, Wilson

1 FT and 0.5 in the bank.

Players that need to go in order of priority would be Wilson, Gomez and McCarthy.

Thinking of getting rid of the first 2 for Cedric and Ighalo this week for a 4 point hit. Worth it? Both could be dropping in price tonight.

Right, I need major surgery here... more than a hospital's worth really so going to have to do it in stages.

    I have 1FT and £0.3 ITB.

    Butland, McCarthy

Kolarov, Richards, GOMEZ 4.6, ZOUMA 5.4, TARGETT 4.0

Silva, Sanchez, Mahrez, Shelvey, CHADLI 6.9

    Aguero, Martial, Vardy

The ones in capitals are obviously the ones needing most drastic care as they're not playing!

My first thought was a cheeky -4 with:

    Gomez Zouma -----> Bellerin, Moreno.

What do you think? Gabriel is a rotation risk right? Can't have any of those at the moment......

The problem is Kos gets injured too easily but he doesn't remain sidelined for 10 weeks or something.. it's usually just 1 or 3-4 weeks at most. Furthermore, he is always the first choice for CB. Playing Gabriel is at your own risk..

Hi Guys, Don't usually post looking for advice but my squad is need of major surgery. Have 2 FT so thinking a -4 minimum. I'll put a couple of options down but open to any ideas.

    De Gea (McCarthy)

    Kolorov, Bellerin, *Gomez* *Haidara* *Targett*

    *Yaya* *Pedro* Maherez, Sanchez, Ayew

    *Graham* Aguero, *Gomis*

Thinking along the lines of this...

    A) Gomez to Bertrand, Pedro to Mata and Gomis to Vardy (leaves 0.1ITB) -4

    B) Gomez to Moreno, Yaya to mata, Gomis to Vardy -4 (0.1ITB)

    C) Gomez to Bertand, Pedro to Mane (0.7 ITB) No hit

    Thanks for any help

If you had to choose between a 4 point hit or losing 0.1 on a player you want rid of which would you take?

I've a defender who isn't playing and his price is going to drop 0.1 (i will lose the 0.1 on his selling price) and i've no FT's

Who is the player? If it is a deadwood, then taking a hit to use the new def regularly might be alright. Otherwise, do nothing.

in same situation. probably gonna take the 0.1.
BUT if the defender you are thinking of transferring to has a strong chance of getting decent points this week, and one of the defenders you were going to play doesn't, then I say do it.

If you had 10.3m to get to defenders to sit alongside Kolarov, Richards and Targett (I know, I know, more pressing matters at hand), who would you go with? I've found a couple of options:

    D) Toby and Cedric
    E) Something completely different....
