Scout Notes – Gameweek 9 – Monday

Bojan Krkic hands Stoke a third successive league win with a first-half spot-kick at the Liberty Stadium. Bafetimbi Gomis blanks for the fifth straight Gameweek, whilst Gylfi Sigurdsson drops to the bench as Swansea’s poor run of form continues.

Bojan Wins it for Potters

Bojan Krkic netted from the penalty spot to earn Stoke City a 1-0 win over Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium – the first time they’ve recorded consecutive road victories since December 2011. The Spanish forward claimed his second goal in four leagues starts since returning from a long-term knee injury, highlighting his potential as a third striker. Priced at 5.3 and taking precedence over Charlie Adam on spot-kicks, Krkic could well deliver points on a budget as Stoke lock horns with the likes of Watford, Newcastle and Sunderland over the next five Gameweeks.

The Staffordshire outfit had no clean sheets to their name through the opening seven Gameweeks but have now kept the opposition out in their previous two match-ups. Considering that the Hornets – who rank bottom for goals scored (six) this campaign – are next on the agenda, Jack Butland’s 8.5% ownership will be hopeful of a third successive shut-out. In terms of their rearguard recruits, Geoff Cameron’s 4.5 price tag and security of starts renders him an attractive squad filler over the short term as Ryan Shawcross closes in on a return to fitness. With the fixtures turning against the Potters from Gameweek 12, though, long-term investment in Mark Hughes’ men looks less appealing.

Swans Toils Continue

Swansea are now winless in five outings following their home defeat to the Potters and have triumphed in just two of their last 11 league encounters. Allied to that, Garry Monk’s men have failed to secure a clean sheet in six of their previous seven fixtures, frustrating Ashley Williams’ sizeable 9.5% ownership. Nonetheless, an upcoming road tie against an Aston Villa side that’s drawn a blank in all but one of their home clashes this term portends an improvement on that front.

Bafetimbi Gomis and Andrew Ayew were hugely ineffectual: the former mustered just one attempt on target and was continuously flagged for offside, while the latter didn’t card a single shot at goal. Both players currently sit in 19% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) sides and have scored one goal between them (courtesy of Ayew against Spurs in Gameweek 8) in the last five league matches. Whilst many will be keen to part company, the Swans square up to Villa, Norwich and Bournemouth in the next four and may yet profit from that favourable run.

Meanwhile, Jonjo Shelvey entered the referee’s notebook for the fourth time this season, putting him on the precipice of a one-match suspension – as the Swans’ top creative outlet (18 key passes), his potential absence would influence our assessment of their attacking prospects. Gylfi Sigurdsson’s diminishing band of owners will be looking for the exit door, though, after the Icelandic international was benched for the first time this term, as Garry Monk opted for Modou Barrow in the attacking midfield slots instead.

    Sorry about the repost, bottomed.

What would be your priority here?

    Butland - McCarthy
    Kolarov - Dawson - Richards - Haidara - Targett
    Sanchez - Yaya - Ayew - Mahrez - Morrison
    Pelle - Vardy - Martial

I've been too busy scrambling to fix the defense (and to sell Aguero last week) to even think about Morrison. Was going to do Kolarov to Bellerin like most people but with the latest news is it finally time to upgrade Richards/Haidara/Targett?

I want Francis out and Arsenal look decent going forward long-term, in your opinion which offers more of a threat to oust/get rotated with:

    A) Bellerin

    B) Monreal

I know Bellerin will be the popular pick but does Debuchy not offer more of a threat of starting the odd game then Gibbs does to Monreal?

Yep. Gibbs is decent at least, though Monreal has been very good. Bellerin is way superior to any Arsenal RB.

    3. Mark-O
      • 9 Years

Wrong. Debuchy is in a more poorer form than Gibbs. I would find A more nailed on.

I dont think Debuchy stands a chance of regaining his place.

He's openly moaned about it and when he did play he looked shocking...
Gibbs is younger and English, Arsenal would do more to keep him happy than Debuchy.

What are peoples opinions on Sunderland defensive prospects under Big Sam?

I need a Targett replacement, John O'Shea at 4.3 is quite tempting for me. They've some good fixtures coming up, admittedly not kept a clean sheet yet, but I'd expect them to tighten up now.

Yeah I've got o'shea at 5th defender at the moment. Hopefully will improve under sam but 4.3 not an expensive punt so not much to lose.

Yeah, my thoughts. I could get any defender, but not wanting to massively restructure my team as wanting to get Aguero back quickly once he's fit.

"Many clubs in England are under pressure, they have to spend money.

“Looking at the circumstance, a mediocre team like Stoke City spent almost 10 million euros on a mediocre striker (Joselu) from Hannover 96.

“Then this is well a lucrative deal for a club from Bundesliga."

Think he referred to Stoke as 'an average club' and Joselu as a 'mediocre striker'. Not too bad for me. Players from the continent are much more honest in interviews by the way, and can say something worth listening to.

His point on money spent on BL players, and the impact it will have in Germany is very accurate and well worth reading. Suppose I found it a tad harsh to be going at Joselu, seeing as he's only played one 90 minute game so far this season in the PL, and who was decent, not mediocre, in the Bundesliga.

To everyone who thinks they know whether Mahrez is starting this week or any other, you do not. You cannot fathom the mind of the Tinkerman. This is the man who brought Veron on at half time in a Champion's League semi final straight after a major back operation. You will never ever know for sure how his team will line up.

As for Vardy owners, he's due a spell on the bench too due to some bizarre tactical insight that we will never understand.
