The Community Round Up

The community got their stop watches out this week as they discussed the media storm created by the exact timing of Southampton defender Cedric Soares’s substitution last weekend. As well as Cedricgate, we also cast our eye over the key community articles and hot topics looking ahead to Gameweek 10’s matches. In addition, we’ve squeezed in an extra few minutes to focus on some of the most eye catching latest Members tables and events in our community leagues.

The Community Articles

To help get prepared for Gameweek 10, three of our regular community writers were on hand to offer advice on transfers, bench decisions and captaincy issues.

Your Mum’s Athletic’s latest What The Bookies Say looks at captaincy options, clean sheet potential and likely outcomes of the weekend’s matches based on bookmakers odds.

Elsewhere, Rodellegabomb has been casting his eye over the latest bandwagons and The Serjeant has been looking at possible shut outs, a key player to consider and team form going into Gameweek 10.

Don’t forget, if you’ve got some analysis, scout reports or features brewing, be sure to visit our community section to submit your article.

The Hottest Topics

Our Hall of Fame, featuring the best managers over a number of seasons, has been updated to take into account Gameweek 9’s event.

This prompted The Colonel to take an indepth look at the Hall of Fame top 50 and compare this bunch of ‘old pros’ with the lucky ‘casuals’ currently topping the Fantasy Premier League.

Looking ahead to the weekend, Liverpool’s first home clash in the Premier League under Jurgen Klopp is among the key matches the community is keeping an eye on. Klopp’s team ran Spurs ragged last weekend as his ‘Gegenpressing’ strategy of knackering out your own team as well as the opposition took effect. But, pondered Wakey, how can injury prone Daniel Sturridge fit into this system?

Another keenly anticipated match is between free-scoring Leicester and away specialists Crystal Palace. Despite being benched for the last two matches JazzliHD urges caution before transferring out Riyad Mahrez. He believes his display as a substitute in Gameweek 9, where he earned an assist, will be enough to convince Tinkerman Claudio Ranieri to reinstate him into the starting line up.

If Mahrez does start and produces the goods, he adds his name to an already-congested midfielder watchlist. With so many wingers and attacking midfielders vying for our attention, we asked whether it was time to return to a power five formation, with just two strikers. For Valar Mesut Ozil is among those deserving of a place amongst this elite group.

Further advice going into Gameweek 10 was on hand from Zasa, who has been trawling the latest statistics to serve up a wealth of numbers on everything from attacking potential to clean sheets. There were further names to consider for those looking to steal a march on their mini-league rivals in our hot topic on Gameweek 10’s best differentials.

We also looked back what Gameweek 9 has taught us in Rough with the Smooth, with failed early transfers during an international break of players a key lesson learned for a number of our community members.

Another key event from Gameweek 9 under discussion was Cedricgate, which sparked a national press and Twitter debate after community regular Fuzzy Warbles questioned FPL’s decision not to award Southampton defender Cedric Soares clean sheet points when substituted around the 60 minute mark.

After taking a battering from journalists and the Twitterati, as well as praise on our Scoutcast, Fuzzy returned later in the week with his views on the media storm his letter to FPL created.

Looking further ahead Gameweek 11’s shift in the fixtures, where Everton and Manchester United embark on kind runs, is set to dominate discussion next week. We covered the subject in our latest Scoutcast and also asked the community how they planned to address this change in fixtures.

The Members Tables

With Gameweek 11’s fixture shift in mind, tillster2003 has taken a look at the best Everton defenders last year as a reminder of their potential.

Knightrider’s latest table considers the attacking threat of Steve McClaren’s Newcastle – another team with good upcoming fixtures. Meanwhile, Scorcher Prime has been looking at the best and worst defences so far this season.

If you’re a member and are yet to get to grips with the custom statistics tables, you can view this movie for an explanation of how they work. Also, remember to tag them so that people can find the tables with ease.

The Community Tournaments

Colin Bothwell had quite a week in Gameweek 9. His score of 67 was enough to propel him to the top of RedLightning’s Top 10K Any Season mini-league. Colin now leads 10 mini-leagues, including AZ’s cash league, thanks to his overall FPL rank of 175.

Balders dropped by with news of a new five-a-side themed tournament set up by recently-formed FFScout community group Fédération Internationale de Fantaisie Football Scout Association( FIFFSA). Meanwhile, the latest standings from Balders’ Grand Play-Off competition can be found here.

Jaffalicious sent this update of the latest standings in his FFS UEFA Champions League competition, while in TorresMagic‘s Last Man Standing competition, Sushant hit the top score in Gameweek 9 with 105. There are now 1873 teams that have qualified for LMS, after 149 were eliminated when the safety score was set at 38.

Finally, it was business as usual in the FFScout Moderators and Contributors league with Andy extending his lead over second-placed Greenwindmill.

If you are running a community tournament and would like the latest scores included in future Community Round Ups please email me a brief summary of the current leaders and a link to your league, spread sheet or head to head competition, at jonty@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk.

    Bottomed (no Brazilian pun intended)

    Last (last) time I'll ask.

    Choose one.

    1) Fortune favors the bold. Captain Mahrez.

    2) Caution is the better part of valor. Captain Vardy.

I don't have Alexis. I'm benching Bellerin and Payet and I don't care what you think about that bit any longer. I just need to sort out the captain and can't bring myself to do that which I should... help me over the hump....

Armband fixed on the late game of Saturday. 🙂

Just one decision remains for this GW, one to bench ?

A: Mane -- Low ownership. Less impact if he did well on my bench.
B: Pelle -- More goal involvement than Mane.
C: Mahrez -- Will he start? Will Palace do a good away job again?

    ... bench Mane, OK?

That's right. I probably don't expect a high scoring in Liverpool vs Southampton game. So, for one goal, I think Pelle will have more chance to involve. Just that.

That's my feeling too. Plus his high ownership, 30% of FPL managers will get his points. I think it's a damage control for me to play him over Mane.

This is a tough one. I am benching Barkley this week. He is back for run of fixtures as I decide how to cheapen a mid to begin to operation repatriate aguero

        Cech (Myhill)
        Kolarov, Bellerin, Dawson (Nyom, Francis)
Sanchez (c), Payet, Mahrez, Mane (Barkley)
        Costa, Pelle, Vardy (vc)

Who would you pick out of Erikson / Walcott / Wij?

Rest of midfield is Sanchez / KDB / Payet / Mahrez

Erikson - great fixtures and reasonable form
Walcott - you said it yourself.. good form but rotation risk (plus have Sanchez)
Wij - differential and New have strong fixtures..

    1) Aguero -> Costa & Ayew to Erikson / Walcott / Wijnaldum (AOA option)
    2) Aguero -> Costa & Davies to Alderweireld (bench Ayew)

    2) is the safer option but tempted by 1)… If you recommend 1) who would you pick? Erikson and Wijnaldum have fixtures, Walcott goal threat but rotation risk. I'm tending towards Erikson or Wijnaldum at the moment.

    *Long post alert
Much has been written about Everton’s changing fixtures. From next GW until the turn of the year, they read (SUN, wham, AST, bou, CRY, nor, LEIC, newc, STOK, TOT).
With doubts about game time for the likes of Mirallas, Lennon, Deulofeu, Naismith, and Kone, it’s hard to look past Barkley (6.8) and Lukaku (8.4) in the premium mid and att options. Both have started every game this season.
Barkley is playing in the number 10 role, is on direct free kicks in the absence of Mirallas and Baines, and second choice for penalties behind Lukaku.
With Baines out, Lukaku has had his share of direct free-kicks which have favoured the left-footer (without success).
Lukaku has a reputation for disappointing in easy fixtures and scoring in the difficult ones, although there is little recent evidence for this. Last season he scored in the Premier League against West Brom, Palace (x2), Villa (x2), Burnley, West Ham (x2), Hull and Newcastle. He didn’t score against any of last season’s top 9 - Chelsea, Man City, Arsenal, Man Utd, Tottenham, Liverpool, Southampton, Swansea or Stoke (Palace were 10th).
In defence, there is more to ponder. The first choice back four when all are available is Coleman, Stones, Jagielka and Baines. At that stage, there will be almost no rotation, with Funes Mori pushing for inclusion in the way Yoshida does at Soton.
Howard is a solid 5.1 option and will play every game.
Galloway (4.5) will play until Baines is back and not a minute longer. 0 goals in 10 Everton matches, 1 assist.
Baines (6.2) will be back “soon” according to Martinez. No point second guessing this, when he’s back he’s back. He will take over the free kicks which clearly favour left-footers, but will be behind Barkley for the others, initially at least. He won’t take pens but will be back on corners. 23 goals in 262 Everton matches (*12 penalties, 6 free kicks).
Coleman (5.9) hasn’t hit the heights of two seasons ago (6 goals 2 assists) or even the 3 goals, 4 assists of last season, boasting just a single assist so far. He seems less cavalier than before, either by design or because the opposition have worked out ways to nullify him. Technically, Coleman plays behind a more natural wide man than Baines (Lennon, Deulofeu, Mirallas). This can make it more difficult to get forward in space. Baines usually plays behind players who prefer to cut inside (Naismith, Pienaar, Mirallas as an inverted winger and even Barkley last season) creating space for him to exploit. There’s also a strong suggestion that Coleman carries a greater attacking threat when Baines is on the pitch, with more for the opposition to worry about as well as the chance to get on the end of Baines’ crosses. 13 goals in 157 Everton matches.
Finally Stones (5.5) vs Jagielka (5.4). Jagielka is the captain and has been an ever-present this season. In Everton’s 3 clean sheets, Jagielka has picked up 2 bonus points and Stones 3 (2&1). Jagielka has scored around 1 goal every 25 games in his 8-year Everton career, with Stones solitary strike in 52 Everton appearances coming against MUN last season. Stones is recently back from injury, but is about to go through contract talks which will draw increased media attention.
    Conclusion:
As ever, much depends on the make-up of your squad but Lukaku looks the best option, followed by Barkley. Howard is a secure route into the defence.
Don’t touch Baines until he’s confirmed as fully fit and playing. Galloway will only play until that time. Coleman has the potential to be explosive but little indication of it in 2015. Stones v Jagielka impossibly close for goal threat and bonus potential. Jagielka slightly more nailed given he hasn’t had any injuries so far this season and gets my vote.

Lukaku and Barkley are great. Maybe Baines once he is back. Coleman follows if he can step it up. Howard for 100% starter. Stones v Jags is a toss up.

Howard looks a great option but are Everton solid defensively. Do they have a habit of conceding sloppy goals to average opposition? I seem to remember them conceding a few in their good run of fixtures around the same time last season.

I would say that is very fair

SUN, wham, AST, bou, CRY, nor, LEIC, newc, STOK, TOT

In the equivalent fixtures last season, they conceded

        2, 1, 0, N/A, 3, N/A, 2, 3, 1, 1

Lukaku is definitely coming into my squad.

In defence it's between Howard and Jagielka for me, leaning towards the later.

nice piece, I agree with mos of what you said, Baines may be an option but frm after this GW from Everton it's hard to look past Lukaku, Barkley,Howard, take any of those and points will come in that run of fixtures.

      Shortened version following feedback

Everton GW 11 onwards (SUN, wham, AST, bou, CRY, nor, LEIC, newc, STOK, TOT)

      GK – Howard 5.1 nailed

DF – Baines 6.2 “back soon”. Off pens and some free-kicks. On corners.
Galloway 4.5 will play until Baines back and not again.
Coleman 5.9 will pose more attacking threat with Baines back.
Jagielka 5.4 v Stones 5.5 little difference in key stats. I prefer Jagielka due to recent Stones injury.

MID – Barkley 6.8 the only option. Number 10 role, on direct free kicks (will share some with Baines). Played every minute this season.
Doubts about game time for other key midfielders.

ATT – Lukaku reputation for trolling has little recent evidence. Last season didn’t score against any of the top 9. On pens, starts every game and will get some direct free kicks until Baines returns.

Pelle - goal involvement.. 50/50 really but in these cases I normally come down on the attacking side

Hey mate. Go with your gut. Moreno wins if score ends up 0-0, 1-0 or equivalent. If it's 1-1, 0-1 or 0-2 Pelle will get the points. I just can't see Liverpool lose this game.

Mate in my mini-league triple captained Aguero vs. NEW. He did.

In a DGW you should target a 25-pointer.
