The Weekend Team News

Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are both sidelined until after the international break. Newcastle’s Jack Colback is out for six weeks with a knee injury, Winston Reid could return for the Hammers, whilst Bojan is back for Stoke after recovering from a toe problem.

Arsenal have been dealt a major blow with the news that Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain have been ruled out until after next month’s international break. The pair picked up calf and hamstring injuries during the midweek cup loss at Sheffield Wednesday, with Arsene Wenger admitting he could play Joel Campbell or Alex Iwobi on the right flank due an increasing lack of options. Wenger has also revealed that he expects Oxlade-Chamberlain to return to action quicker than Walcott.

Seamus Coleman is a major doubt for Everton’s home clash with Sunderland after picking up a stomach bug over the last few days. Leighton Baines and Mo Besic will return to first-team training today but the weekend is likely to come too soon for the pair.

Mark Hughes has revealed that defender Marc Muniesa will be sidelined for three to four weeks after suffering a hamstring injury in the midweek cup victory against Chelsea. The weekend will also come too soon for fellow centre-back Geoff Cameron, who came off early with a thigh issue in last weekend’s loss to Watford – Hughes has suggested that the American requires another four to five days to recover. Mame Biram Diouf and Jon Walters are both expected to be available despite soreness and a dead leg respectively following the Chelsea tie. Elsewhere, Bojan is set to return for the Potters having been rested due to a toe problem in midweek, while Glen Johnson is also expected to be in contention – he missed the Chelsea clash with a knock but is back in training.

Newcastle have suffered an injury blow with the news that midfielder Jack Colback is ruled out for up to six weeks with the knee injury that forced him off during last week’s derby loss at Sunderland.

Slaven Bilic suggests that the Hammers almost have a clean bill of health for the weekend. Key defender Winston Reid is back in training, though the Hammers boss has conceded he will have to “wait and see” if the New Zealand international is fully fit. Alex Song remains unavailable.

Swansea have a fully fit squad for the weekend visit of Arsenal, with Garry Monk confirming that winger Wayne Routledge is back in contention having trained all week.

Leandro Ulloa will be assessed ahead of the weekend, after missing recent matches with a thigh problem. Foxes boss Claudio Ranieri has suggested that the forward “is ready” for the Hawthorns trip.

A non-committal Tony Pulis has revealed West Brom “have one or two knocks” ahead of the visit of Leicester.

Sunderland will give Fabio Borini, Ola Toivonen, Younes Kaboul and John O’Shea as much time as possible before making a late decision on their fitness.

All this and more has now been updated in the Team News section ahead of tomorrow’s deadline. Keep an eye on our official Twitter Stream for breaking news – as the day unfolds, we will issue updates from Friday’s press conferences and refresh our Team News tab accordingly to keep you informed.

Really tempted myself. They've had terrible fixtures so far and he's got 1 point less than Mane.

And then would you tend to bench Barkley? As a one week punt I like, however I don't trust Barkley enough as a long term option.

If playing mostly 3-4-3 on WC:

    A) Mane + 5.3 mid
    B) Barkley + Mahrez

So, which is my better option here - 1 or 2?

    1. Albrighton ➡ Mesut Ozil (3-5-2, bench Martial)

    2. Martial ➡ Harry Kane (3-4-3, bench Albrighton)

    Current front 8:

    Sanchez KDB Mahrez Payet (Albrighton)
    Martial Pelle Vardy

Morning all. My current Huth/Dawson dilemma has made me wonder, if people have opposing players within the same game, do people prefer to put all their eggs in one basket or spread the risk?

In my situation, a Leicester victory to nil with Huth, Mahrez and Vardy could reap huge rewards. However, a 1-0 loss (not exactly rare against Pulis) would leave me immediately with 3 blanks in my side. With Dawson, Mahrez and Vardy, my ceiling would be lower - at least one will almost certainly blank - but I am likely to at least get some returns from the game.

Do other people have a preference in this kind of situation?

            That is sooo good that:

"I've seen quite a few posters this week (and pretty much every week before) tying themselves in knots trying to decide whether to play certain players who face each other. This weeks prime example is Berbatov vs. Begovic/Cameron.

The logic goes something like this:

            - If Berbatov scores then Begovic/Cameron lose their clean sheet(s).
            - If Begovic/Cameron keep a clean sheet then Berbatov hasn't scored.
            - If they can't all succeed then I must be best off benching one of them.

This is essentially true, but ignores several issues:

            - Picking all of them gives you the best opportunity to earn points whatever the outcome (granted, if Stoke concede and Berbatov isn't involved you suffer but that would be the case whatever you do).
            - If you bench Berbatov and he scores and ruins your clean sheets you'll be furious.
            - If you bench Begovic/Cameron and they shut out Berbatov you'll be furious.
            - How often have you had a GW where all of your defenders kept cleansheets and all of your attackers scored? What's that? Never? Well maybe you should worry about this a little less.

Basically what I'm trying to say is that you should judge each player on their individual merits and their likelihood of scoring points in the gameweek completely independently of all of your other players and pick your best XI on that basis.

If you think Stoke have a better chance of a cleansheet than West Ham or whoever your next best option would be, play your Stoke defenders. If you think Berbatov has a better chance of scoring than Maloney or whoever, then play him. You'll make fewer costly mistakes that way.

All that said, this is a game of opinions and varying tactics - this is how I play the game but if you want to play differently and it works for you, more power to you. I'm just trying to provoke a little interesting debate!"

I do agree with your post, and I always play the individuals likely to get most points (e.g. if this was, say, Arsenal against Leicester instead of WBA, I wouldn't hesitate to play Arsenal defenders). However, in this case I'm very 50/50 on Huth v Dawson, so just wondering which approach people prefer generally.

Aha the post is excellent, and it baffles me when people go all in with a team when it clearly isn't the best option, but this 50/50 choice has me struggling. Very good defence and poor attack vs poor defence and very good attack.

Personally I'd play Dawson - if you think the clean sheet chances are about even then I'd say he has a better chance of scoring against Leicester than Huth does against West Brom. Just my hunch though.

Depends on the fixture really. If I'm confident of a result, I'll go 'All in'.

Brom v Leicester however, could go either way so I'd say spreading the risk is the better strategy

This is the problem, I really wouldn't know who to pick from Huth and Dawson if I had no other players in the fixture. I'm not confident at all of a result either way.

I like trying to maximise potential points so no opposing attacks-defences.

I don't mind playing an attacker against a defender if needs be. Two attackers not so sure. In this situation I would definitely play both Mahrez and Vardy so I'd be inclined to just go with Huth also.

Im playing Schmeichel Vardy Mahrez Dawson.
      Why?
Schmeichel - I think more likely Schmeichel keeps cs than Butland (WBA dont score much!)
Vardy Mahrez - Well I only have Westwood and even so these guys are on fire.
Dawson - Im not playing Richards or Francis. I would like to have some better 4/5th defender and bench Dawson. But they are worse in my case so Dawson it is.
      Hoping - 6,6,6,2. Could go - 2,2,2,6
I like Doosra thinking, just play players who you think has more chance than others to score points.

Woah. He is good but he is not the wall of China. City will concede with Kompany playing someone this season, could be this week.

A playing Kompany and a CS has a really high correlation this year, right?

Yes. But that just points to increased probability, can't comment about a specific week, specially if it is for a hit.

I assume you would play him instead of Azpi this week. Benteke is back for Liverpool Chelsea so I could see them scoring and Sagna likely to get cs v Norwich. Would probably wait a week personally, but a good move until zabs is back

    Hi all,
Long time reader - first time poster. I've got a dilemma that I think others have solved before me that I can't work out. Any help would be really appreciated.

    Begovic

    Kolarov, Bellerin, Huth, Dawson

    KDB, Sanchez, Mahrez

    Lukaku, Pelle, Vardy

    Butland, Naughton, Lens, Sinclair. 0.5ITB

Without ditching one of KDB or Sanchez, I can't find any way that I get Aguero back into that side in a few weeks, short of reducing my defenders to 4.0 options; or replacing Lukaku/Pelle with a 5.0 option as well as downgrading a defender.

How is everyone else doing it? (I see teams with loads ITB and midfields of Sanchez/KDB/Payet/Mahrez/Ozil and just shout 'how!' at my computer)

    Thanks!

Do you have 0.2 in the bank?

Lose Lens 6.4, Lukaku 8.4 and Pelle 8.4 for Hoolihan 5.1 Aguero 13.1 and Igahlo 5.4

      1. Big Mac 24
        • 11 Years

Lens has potential but 3.6 ppg at 6.4 is not enough imo, Mahrez only cost 0.1 more and he's bagging 7.8! Hoolahan 4.8 and he's been quiet of late

Like it - thanks so much!

It was the Igahlo to Vardy that messed me up the most I think; so if I walk that back then things start to look a bit clearer. I just need to decide whether or not KDB and Aguero are too much City forward; and whether or not I'd be better off having wider coverage.

          Thanks everyone!

The way city fire on all cylndersthere is no too much, but mabye reduce costs by downgrading KDB to Silva when fir 0.6 saving, or Yaya 2m saving. Or even go simpler and get in Kompany, the leagues leading PPG with 8 - so far if he plays, they get a clean sheet, if he doesn't, they don't!
