The Digest – Gameweek 12

Romelu Lukaku’s ascent up the Fantasy standings brings the Everton forward onto many a radar ahead of some kind upcoming matches. Palace find their form at Anfield, whilst Sergio Aguero’s imminent return is set to have a major say in our winter planning.

The Player

There was almost an air of inevitability about Romelu Lukaku’s leveler at Upton Park last Saturday.

The Everton striker does, after all, love playing against the Hammers. Lukaku had netted six times in as many matches against the London outfit prior to the weekend and delivered the goods yet again, bagging a goal and two bonus points to climb to second in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) forward standings.

Encouragingly for Roberto Martinez and Fantasy managers alike, the Belgian international seems to have developed some consistency to his top-flight displays in recent outings. Lukaku produced points in just two of his first six matches but has since blanked just twice in the subsequent six – only United and Arsenal have kept him at bay.

Already, he’s closing in fast on the previous year’s attacking returns. Lukaku has scored seven times – only three less than 2014/15 – whilst his tally of four assists is edging towards last term’s six.

One look at the next seven Gameweeks (AVL, bou, CPL, nor, LEI, new, STO) underlines just why he’s the most sought-after striker in FPL this week. Over 67,000 managers have acquired Lukaku’s services since that Upton Park strike and with his confidence on the up, the Belgian’s perfect blend of form and fixtures is looking hard to resist.

The Team

A 2-1 win at Anfield on Sunday brought Jurgen Klopp back down to earth as Palace chalked up a third straight victory against a resurgent Liverpool outfit.

Ahead of back-to-back home matches against Sunderland and Newcastle, Alan Pardew’s side served a timely reminder of their options at both ends of the pitch.

The 4.0-priced Wayne Hennessey continues to look secure between the sticks and with Joel Ward benched for the Anfield clash, Scott Dann showed just why he’s the priciest defender at Selhurst Park. The centre-half bagged a second goal of the season to climb to fifth in the defender standings – only Aleksandar Kolarov has earned more bonus points (11 to nine) at the back than the 5.1-priced Eagles centre-half.

Yannick Bolasie’s second goal in the last five also brings him back onto our radars. Handed a role up top against the Reds, the DR Congo international’s appeal is boosted by the fact that Yohan Cabaye and Wilfried Zaha are teetering on the Suspension Tightrope, with four yellow cards apiece.

Connor Wickham’s return off the bench also bodes well for Palace’s attacking midfield three, with the former Sunderland man offering a real physical focal point up front. There’s no doubt that the Eagles have toiled without Wickham’s presence in the final third – they won 2-1 at Stamford Bridge in his last start and had scored just four times in seven matches prior to their weekend win.

If Sunday’s showing is anything to go by, then, it seems that the Eagles are starting to finally return to form in time to take advantage of a kind upcoming schedule which also hands them clashes against the likes of Everton, Stoke and Bournemouth in the next six rounds of fixtures.

The Talking Point

After seeing his side fail to find a way past Villa last Sunday, Manuel Pellegrini sent Fantasy managers’ plans into overdrive by revealing that Sergio Aguero could be in line for a Gameweek 13 return against Liverpool.

Only yesterday, the Argentine’s tweet on his recovery from a hamstring injury afforded further reason for optimism as we prepare to welcome him back into the fray.

Since Aguero limped out of action in the previous international break, most of us have restructured our squads and used the money to strengthen our attacks. Plenty have opted for eight strong options in midfield and up front, leaving us weekly headaches when it comes to decide who to bench. Aguero’s return could change all that as we look for ways to free up cash to acquire his services.

Yesterday’s confirmation that Dimitri Payet will be sidelined for around three months will be seen by many as the first step in restructuring, with the likes of Manuel Lanzini and Gerard Deulofeu offering cut-price alternatives to the Hammers playmaker. Furthermore, Mesut Ozil – at 8.8 – is challenging the 11.6-priced Alexis Sanchez as our go-to Arsenal option, having delivered points in eight of his 11 appearances. In a season where the likes of Riyad Mahrez, Jamie Vardy and Odion Ighalo all offer exceptional value for money, finding a route back to Aguero shouldn’t be too difficult.

The question for most, though, is when to make the move? Much could depend on the City situation. Given that Wilfried Bony limped off on 24 minutes at Villa Park, the league leaders currently boast youngster Kelechi Iheanacho as their only fully-fit striker. If Bony is ruled out for any length of time, Pellegrini will certainly be tempted to call upon Aguero quicker than he previously anticipated as he looks to reignite his side’s title bid.

In saying that, there’s no doubt that Pellegrini will court caution with his star striker’s fitness and it’s unlikely Aguero will be afforded 90-minute run outs on his immediate return.

Having signed off for domestic duties with a five-goal haul against Newcastle in just 64 minutes back in Gameweek 8, though, Aguero’s explosive potential looms large. Down in price to 13.0, owned by just 10% of FPL managers, he now has four home matches in the next six. If he’s passed fit for the Liverpool encounter, dare we go without him?

i've been very punt averse so far this season and done moderately well in the process. I'm thinking about taking my first real punt with Firmino. What punts have you guys taken this season and how did it work out?

in hindsight all my Chelsea players feel like punts.
only costa a few weeks ago paid off and now I don't have him so not even sure one week return counts

I would only call Chelsea picks, punts if you brought them in, from maybe GW 10 onwards

Martial was probably my biggest punt, and it completely failed. I've been pretty safe with transfers, there have been decisions like bringing Kane in and captaining him (pre-Villa) that haven't been widely done in FPL, but I wouldn't say they were really punts.

I started with a few - Wilson, Benteke, Sterling - with mixed success.

I would say kane was a punt at that time, after so many blanks you were punting on when he would start to perform and nailed it.

how long did you keep Martial for? I was never tempted but I imagine if you brought him in early, got the assist and cashed out pretty soon afterwards, it wouldnt have been so bad a punt

Got him GW7 and captained him for his assist, sold GW11 for Kane.

this is purely from watching him recently, and I haven't checked any stats but positions he takes up, his eagerness to shoot on goal at any given opportunity, his touch and vision. He looks dangerous in and around the box. He hasn't really been given a chance in the league. Brendan played him OOP, and against Chelsea he played upfront as false no.9. His best position looks like the free role behind the striker. He looked good against Kuzan and Bournemouth and could/should have scored at least once in each game. As his fitness improves, his shooting accuracy should too

For me it's a wait and see, but I can see the temptation. But he isn't exactly cheap considering Coutinho is only 0.2m more expensive.

As a pool fan, I like the look of him. One problem in terms of FPL is that both him and Cout look best as a number 10.
                    They can't both play there.

I did Countinho last night in a haze of red wine fumes, washed down with a price thnigie which predicted - incorrectly - that Payet would fall last night.

Depends on how much more dosh you need to rustle up to afford Kun

I'll have enought for kun even if i had coutinho to my team (might have to down grade kdb to silva when he is back but i'm happy with that)

Also payet will drop and coutinho will surely rise 0.1 or 0.2... so i'm tempted to coutinho

Ahahaha hitting a 300 yard drive and then frantically hitting spin, and it turns at a right angle. Excellent realism that.

Then, if having a bad round, just taking it out on the game and smashing drives off the green. "That's not the best shot we've seen today" as I launch a 2 foot put onto the next fairway.

In the first versions you could change spin direction at any point, so it was horrible when they changed it so that past a certain point you couldn't change the direction! When you're frantically putting backspin on the ball and then realise you're 20 yards short of the green and can no longer change it to topspin!

Morning everyone. Sorry for the long post in advance – it’s crisis time! 🙁

I'm having an absolute shocker of a season. The last 4 gameweeks have taken me from inside 100k to outside 700k - I can't ever remember having such an appalling run.

I've made poor decisions, but even moves that were understandable at the time seem to have backfired spectacularly - injuries galore and choices such as Bony over Lukaku/Kane.

So I'm hoping for some help from FFS to resurrect a miserable season. Here's my squad:

        Myhill, McCarthy*

        Kolarov, Cedric*, Bellerin*, Davies*, Nyom

        Sanchez, Mane, Barkley, Payet*, Alli

        Vardy, Bony*, Ighalo

As well as the asterisked players who've been injured/dropped/rotated, I have a couple (Myhill, Barkley) who I wouldn't mind getting rid of. If I had a WC, I'd use it.

The positive is that I have 7.7 ITB, so can make upgrades and still have enough to bring in Aguero.

Obviously Bony and Payet are priorities to get rid of. I think Kane is the standout option this week so I'm tempted to bring him in (and captain) and wait 1/2 weeks for Aguero. I personally don't think he'll score big against Liverpool even if he does start.

Payet out also makes sense. I'm looking at Ozil who would allow a Kane/Vardy -> Aguero upgrade, or Mahrez/Wijnaldum which would allow me to do Ighalo -> Aguero.

I'm hoping Bellerin will be passed fit and that Cedric is reinstated... as long as one plays, I'll have a back 3.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be hugely appreciated.

I'd worry about getting XI out. Kolarov could be rotated, Davies won't play, Cedric might not play and you're left with Nyom and hopefully Bellerin.

At least with Moreno you can pretty much get a side out. Payet can be sorted with Alli temporarily, or just take the hit...

Not as bad as it looks at first glance I don't think. McCarthy can wait and Bellerin should be back next week. Cedric is a wait and see job. Davies is an issue but Payet and Bony are the priorities as you've already mentioned.

Basically your transfer plans look sound to me - you've had some rough luck but keep making the sensible decisions and you'll turn it round soon enough.

Thanks for your reply - realise my post was a bit excessive, as Rusty pointed out... Honestly, there have been weeks I thought I was on for a big green and everything went wrong!

Think I'm set on Kane in. He appeals over Lukaku, think Villa will provide resistance. Just need to decide on the midfield option.

don't see anything wrong with the way you are thinking.
my own thought is we don't have to rush into aguero buy, wouldn't say his next three games are great fixtures, even with the 'its aguero he can score any time' thought.
perhaps you could do lukaku and save another downgrade to get aguero funds

Yeah -12 is big. Maybe better to get them in all at once rather than 3 -4's in a couple of months. But I really need to cut down on the hits.

I agree, or at least for me I only wait until I reach breaking point and do a massive rejig. Usually try and save 2FTs for it or a wildcard, but not this time. Strike while the iron is hot and all that, we have a fair idea of how teams are shaping up now so I think in the long run a sensible few hits will pay off.

            Lets see, I think its

Cresswell, Francis, Jones -> Moreno, Smalling, Bellerin
Payet -> Deulofeu (or other, not entirely decided yet)
            Costa, Pelle -> Kun, Igahlo

I know the whole stuff about hits on defenders, but it sets the team up much better.

All of them look good, especially the defenders.

I've done Yaya + Pelle -> Ozil + Lukaku, with a further 8.1 to spend on a Payet replacement.

Thinking one of Bolasie, Wijnaldum, or Firmino ( 😀 )

Cheers 🙂 Could hold off on Costa -> Kun if I really need to, but Chelsea are just bilge 😛

Like those moves a lot, as for the replacement its hard to say. I saw the discussion on Firmino, and really if you're WCing its fair to take a punt, but do you expect anything from him vs City?

Bolasie an interesting one, looking at the woeful opponents he plays. Wijnaldum a good player, but Newcastle might be on the back foot for both of those matches (still, could expect some space in defences, especially vs Leicester).

I don't need a player that much for this week as I can play 4 defenders (VvD, Kolarov, Coleman, Koscielny).. but NEXT week I'll need someone with a good fixture.

I also have Ighalo on the bench this week so it's mainly for next, which means a Liverpool player could be ideal (vs Swansea) and it kind of rules out Wijnaldum as I expect Palace to beat Newcastle.

Cabaye is out as he's a risk with getting a ban in the next game, so that leaves Firmino or Bolasie..

Might just end up flipping a coin.

That's all pretty fair so. You could always, if feasible (though I accept a bit of a risk to TV) wait until after next week, then do Payet -> Cabaye if he isn't banned.

But really I think you can just punt away and see how it goes, not exactly going to impact massively with an impending WC.

Dusan Tadic is in fact Matt Dillon. Try unseeing it.

        Apart from that:

        Aguero Ighalo Vardy

        B - Sanchez Alli Kdb Marhez - 7 Mid

Biggest regret this season is gut feeling which I posted on FB to do -4 after Costa owned 1 week and 24pts as C to Kane before his hatty. Costa against Villa didn't impress dispite his score. That said I do feel Hazard is due so who knows

Sanchez will outscore Ozil over the course of the season. He's only a few points behind having blanks for the last 3 - 4 games! ANother goals haul is imminent. Not consistent player like Ozil but potential to explode like Aguero

          -12, wow!
Sanchez you will regret when he gets a hat trick at some point.
Mata, delivers every now and again. Good fixture this week.
Wijnaldum, question mark. Not a great fixture this week.
Deulofeu, cheap and looks like he will deliver.
          Mahrez, no brainer.
          Kane, getting form.
Pelle, Lukaku? Good home fixture this week.
          Vardy, no brainer.

So i would say Wijnaldum this week and Pelle next week. No minus.
          Whats your defence?

What do you need funds for? Aguero? He wont get full minutes in first couple of weeks.

Bony + payet out for Kane + deulofeu in.

I am debating using my WC to get Aguero in a couple of weeks.

I already have him but Özil is by a country mile the best player in that bracket.

Many would disagree but I'd say Tadic.

        Payet > ???

Have 8.1 to spend. Willing to go Fabianski > Butland to get another 0.4 for a -4.

I'm gambling on Lingard. Attacking mid who registered as many shots as any Manure player last game and the 0.4m makes huge difference to my other planned trades in next game weeks and if doesn't work out easy fixed

The way he currently plays, he's a good bet

          Madness 😉

I predict 2 CSs max for Chelsea in the next 6.

There's 0 signs of their defence tightening up Andy, I'd steer clear.

This. I've owned him all season and getting rid on a WC. United, Arsenal and Soton defences way better value

I could name about 10 Def I'd rather have and most under 5.5m

I was thinking of getting rid of him for a SOT defender. Juicy fixtures making me hold on to him.

I've held onto him for the whole season... wishing I'd shipped him out right now.

The fixtures do look great though.

Thoughts on Eriksen? Created a lot of chances but not received many assists. Perhaps this will change if Kane starts banging in the goals like last season?

Lamela is out, so i think Son starts next game. I want to see the dynamic with him, kane and Eriksen as they are yet to start together
