Scout Scribbles – Dire Night for Manchester Duo

Man City stumble to a 1-0 Champions League loss at Juventus, as neighbours United fail to find a way past PSV at Old Trafford. Elsewhere, Mauricio Pochettino considers resting Harry Kane for Spurs’ Europa League clash tonight and Daniel Sturridge edges closer to a Liverpool return.

City Lose in Turin

Manchester City fell to a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Juventus last night. Sergio Aguero played 69 minutes before being replaced by Raheem Sterling, while Gael Clichy lasted the distance on his return from injury as Aleksandar Kolarov dropped to the bench. Joe Hart was withdrawn at the 81-minute mark, with Manuel Pellegrini later explaining that the shot-stopper was suffering with hamstring and back injuries. The Sky Blues boss refused to rule out David Silva for their home tie against Southampton, but insisted that Vincent Kompany will be sidelined for at least another couple of weeks:

“As for Joe Hart – it is impossible to know how serious his injury is at this point. He has a problem with his hamstring and has had a problem in his back for the past week. We hope we don’t lose him, but for if for some reason he cannot play I have trust in Willy Caballero. David Silva is working with the physio in Manchester and we will know more tomorrow, but Vincent Kompany has no chance to play this week. He is not running yet and will need at least two weeks more.”

The Scout Says: Ally Hart’s doubt for the weekend with Kompany’s continued absence and Man City’s defence is looking vulnerable. Those Fantasy managers holding the likes of Aleksandar Kolarov and Bacary Sagna will be irked by the fact that Pellegrini’s charges have shipped 12 goals in the five matches that Kompany missed, failing to register a single clean sheet. Nonetheless, match-ups against Stoke City (away) and Swansea (home) in the next three Gameweeks harbour decent shut-out potential. Although Pellegrini previously stated that Aguero is unable to play three games in a week, the Argentine has played just over an hour in both of the last two and will surely lead the line at home to Southampton once again. Given that City have scored just one goal in their last three in all competitions, Silva’s possible return would be a real shot in the arm as they attempt to rediscover their spark in the final third.

United Attack Falters Again

Manchester United’s home encounter against PSV Eindhoven ended as a 0-0 stalemate, putting their Champions League campaign firmly in the balance. Wayne Rooney and Anthony Martial returned to the starting line-up from illness and injury respectively, with the former operating as a number ten and the latter spearheading the attack. Having been utilised as a forward last weekend, Memphis Depay was shifted to the left flank, whilst Van Gaal’s decision to bench Juan Mata meant Jesse Lingard was afforded his third successive 90-minute run-out for the Red Devils.

The Scout Says: Another clean sheet for the Red Devils reaffirms the merits of investing in their back line. Chris Smalling (6.7) is the safest option by virtue of his security of starts, though Marcos Rojo (5.5) has started four of the last five but remains a slight rotation risk, particularly over the festive period when the schedule picks up pace. Notwithstanding the former’s prohibitive price tag, Man United’s favourable fixtures (lei, WHU, bou, NOR, sto) certainly justifies investment. Up front, Martial flattered to deceive as the lone frontman and has now scored one goal in his last 11 appearances for United; having chalked up just 11 shots throughout the entire league campaign, the former Monaco starlet will need to accelerate his influence in the final third to re-ignite our interest. Lingard, meanwhile, produced four attempts last night – double the number of any team-mate – and at just 4.5, he is clearly worth monitoring if he can retain his starting berth at the weekend again.

Pochettino Considers Resting Kane Tonight

Mauricio Pochettino revealed that Harry Kane could be rested for Tottenham Hotspur’s Europa League tie against Qarabag FK. During his pre-Europa League press conference, the Argentine complained about the fixture scheduling which sees his side play in Azerbaijan tonight before playing host to Chelsea at midday on Sunday:

“Why couldn’t we play on Monday against Chelsea? The reality is you play Thursday, have a long trip home and play Sunday morning, in this case Chelsea who played yesterday [Tuesday] and have three days (to prepare). We have one day – it’s an advantage for opponent. We need to accept the rules for the game but it’s the reality for us. We will see tomorrow if Kane plays. This is a problem we have had in the last few weeks, the international players play a lot: Kane, Alli, Walker, Dier. The competition is very tough and it’s not easy to manage that. But always we try to assess and analyse to make the correct decision.”

On the injury front, Pochettino broke the news that Erik Lamela and Nabil Bentaleb are contending with ankle injuries. Meanwhile, Danny Rose, Kyle Walker and Mousa Dembele will not feature for the Lilywhites, as they were not asked to travel with the squad to Azerbaijan:

“Nabil is still out, he got a bad tackle during international duty with Algeria and he is out now. Alex Pritchard, Nacer Chadli and Erik Lamela are also out and we have rested a few players for this game as well.”

The Scout Says: Given that Kane hasn’t missed a domestic or European match this term and turned out for England in the U21 Euros during the summer, his 27% ownership will be hoping that Pochettino affords the red-hot frontman a well-earned breather. Fresh off the back of a brace against West Ham United, Kane will be relishing the opportunity to match up against Chelsea at White Hart Lane, having put them to the sword with a brace and two assists in the corresponding fixture last term. With Dele Alli serving out his one-match suspension next Gameweek and Lamela a doubt for the Blues clash, Dembele could be shifted back into the attacking quartet, with Ryan Mason sitting alongside Eric Dier in the double pivot.

Sturridge Close to Reds Return

Jurgen Klopp said that Daniel Sturridge could play against Bordeaux on Thursday if he negotiates training without any problems. Conversely, Martin Skrtel is unlikely to be in the matchday squad because of illness:

“Daniel is coming closer and closer, he has trained seven or eight times in a row. I will help him, and in the end it will help us. He’s closer. Each session is very important, my decision you will see tomorrow, but it’s closer. The most important thing is he can train with no problems. If we have the feeling that it’s a good moment for [Sturridge to play] a few minutes or more, we will see in the game!”

The Scout Says: In the wake of their 4-1 road victory over Manchester City, Liverpool’s attacking assets are back on many a Fantasy manager’s radar. Philippe Coutinho (four goals and one assist in three) and Roberto Firmino (one goal and three assists in three) are courting serious attention in light of their burgeoning partnership, yet the striker situation on Merseyside, with both Sturridge and Christian Benteke jostling for attention, means we are yet to ascertain Klopp’s preferred starting XI. With Liverpool’s schedule from now through to the New Year (SWA, new, WBA, wat, LEI, sun) looking ripe for returns, Fantasy managers are hoping for some consistency of selection as we look for a way into Klopp’s flourishing attack.

Eder Pushing for more Minutes

Having started ahead of Bafetimbi Gomis for the Swans’ 2-2 draw at home to Bournemouth, Eder is determined to prove his worth and earn further pitch time in the league:

“I had to adjust to the rhythm because I haven’t been playing, but it was good and I’m looking for more minutes. I’m working hard for that. I always want to play, but it’s the gaffer’s decision. I’m going to keep working hard so I can play more games. That’s what I’m going to do. I need to play a few games, but I will try to show my best as soon as possible. I’m working hard and I feel confident.”

The Scout Says: Eder’s insertion into the starting XI was borne out of necessity, considering that Gomis had drawn blanks in eight successive starts. It’s safe to say that the Portuguese frontman failed to stamp his authority on the lone-striker berth, managing one shot and zero key passes against the Cherries. As such, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Garry Monk elected to reinstate Gomis for their trip to Liverpool this Sunday. With regards to attacking coverage for the Welsh outfit, Andre Ayew (three goals in six outings) remains the prime pick. The 7.1-priced Ghana international has tallied as many shots on target (five) as the rest of Swansea’s midfielders combined over the last six Gameweeks.

Don't take offence now, this is a genuine question that has been puzzling me for some while:

why are the English managers so tactically inapt?

I tend to respect managers as professionals and usually think that they have good reasons to do whatever I find counter-intuitive, but in the case of the English managers that have recently been managing in PL (or had some name anyway), I genuinely find it very hard not to think that they're just plain wrong.

Klopp's comment on trying to do what the opponent finds hard to defend, the obvious idea of hitting the opponents weaknesses, made me think of how Sherwood throws Gestede against Chelsea defence of Terry and Zouma. Then against the fast Spurs CB's Alderweireld and Verthongen, he played... Gabby. He does exactly the opposite to what Klopp suggests, tries to beat the opponent where they are at their strongest. And then he sets his defence weakest at where opponents is at its strongest, i.e. last season playing a very high and quite slow (Vlaar!) defence line against the pacy Southampton. The heat maps show that the RB Bacuna was _never_ in the RB defensive zone - no wonder the LW Mané ran riot. I'm not saying Sherwood does this intentionally. Rather that his tactical choices are completely random. This randomness is manifest also in the way he uses his players, or doesn't use them.

He's just one example. Monk is to my mind similarly randomizing manager. He doesn't appear to have much clue of what he's doing. Rather a Redknapp-school of "just go fecking run about" management. He got continuously extremely lucky last season, but we've seen that luck can't be eternal. Then there's of course Redknapp. And while Pardew has had some good times recently, don't you feel that he's a bit of a one trick pony? Hey, "I've got this great plan, let's wait for opponent to come to our half and then press the ball and try hit long passes to our fast wingers!" When the opponent chooses to sit back, he has no ideas of how to break that defence. And then, as we saw at Newcastle, he tends to go as random as Sherwood.

The reliance to counter attacking and "running about" is also manifest in the much better all-in-defence school of Allardyce, Pulis and Hodgson. I don't say they are tactically inapt, for they are not, they know how to turtle defend and Pulis has some plans on attacking (loooong ball to a BIG striker, but at least he knows to try and play that guy against the smaller defender), and to my mind these are the best English managers. To some level. But I doubt they'll be ever able to rise their team to a high level. They're very one-dimensional and couldn't make it on a higher level, that game plan just doesn't get much out of really good players, and really good teams beat it most of the time. I think England running their legs off in middle of the Amazon rainforest against intelligently passing Italy team just epitomised the limitations of this strategy.

Talking about one dimensional, the job that Moyes did at Real Sociedad greatly shows how his explanation that it's ManU style and not his style to rely on crosses only was simply a lie. There's no team as dull in Spain as Moyes' Sociedad was, and the only thing that has allowed his incredibly lousy attacking side to score and not find itself at the bottom of the league is that he had by far the easiest early fixtures to this season (in 11 matches they played all bottom half clubs except Getafe and lost to most, only big team they played was Atletico). This is a serious fallback for a team that played CL just before Moyes took over. Was it just a weakened team? Example: in his last match, Moyes lost 0-2 to Las Palmas. In his very first match, Sacristán who replaced Moyes, won Sevilla 2-0.

Then there's McClaren. I kind of thought that he's a decent manager, but it's beyond me how he can set his team up same time so sluggish in attack and so vulnerable in defence. There seems to be no intention in Newcastle's game at all. What are they doing? Mostly nothing.

Finally, I think this guy just epitomises what I'm on about:

He definitely was not. He battled a flipping 26 aerial duels against the probably strongest aerial unit in the league (Terry-Zouma) wit the expected result of just ONE headed attempt at goal, and that from the border of the box.

Yesterday I watched an interview with former manager Peter Taylor, regarding Jamie Vardy's form. He said 'I don't think he's ready for England yet, because he's not great with his back to goal'.

I thought that pretty much sums us up. Let's overlook the most in form striker in the league, with the biggest desire, who is winning games for his club that are top of the league, just because he isn't an Andy Carroll type that we can lump the ball up to and hope that someone from our midfield can catch up with play before the defenders win it back and start their possession again.

      We're brainless.

"If I was a centre half I wouldn't want to play against him. He doesn't give you any time when you are on the ball."

"But one thing I would say about Vardy is that I am not sure he is an England player at the minute because I don't think he is good enough with his back to goal."

So he wouldn't wanna play against him, but he's not ready.

I think it's pretty weak using that Paul Ince gif.

He was probably just making a note of an example to use at HT when reminding a particular player to get a shot off in a particular set of circumstances. To question his tactical noise because he made a brief note is poor form tbh.

tl;dr: I think my main point was that I can't see any English manager able to pick on the weaknesses of opposition defence. And often they also seem very clueless about their own defensive failures.

The EPL is all about money and supposedly fast paced entertainment to draw the audiences in.

People probably wouldn't pay to watch a season of 'dull' tactical chess type games.

Having said that i prefer tactical masterclasses but then Mane destroying Villa in 5 minutes was also great.

English managers, players and coaches rarely go abroad. You can get away with running around like headless chickens inEngland

Agreed, but personally I find, for example, the Liga matches in Spain much better entertainment, exactly because the teams play better football, and that's largely tactically better football. Despite the higher tactical level, more intelligent pressing game and so on, the median Liga team gets about as many shots in match as the Median PL team (if that's an entertainment measure). I just have a little doubt that the PL fans would abandon the league if the shots were a result of better tactical plays rather than of bad ones.

Also, many foreign managers introduce smart game and that doesn't turn the fans off. Even at Stamford Bridge Old Trafford they don't seem that unhappy, yet, despite extremely negative football the managers make the teams play.

      Agree 100%

McClaren, is funny as well...Why not turn Sissoko into a CM/DM combo and be done with that midget Anita...

Somehow Pardew managed to turn Sissoko from a very fine box-to-box CM into a rather mediocre RW. That's one of my favourite examples of how his managing, too, gets all random when his plan A stops working.

Agree with you both. Newcastle is a weird case because many fans adress the problem as a "Unbalanced Squad Issue". That's partly the truth, but McClaren's way of handling this issue is remarkably bad. Pochettino: Missing a CDM, uses Dier with great success. Guardiola: Seeing a CM in a RB (Lahm) with great success. Wenger: Recalls an unproven loanee to be one of the greatest CDM in the league (Coquelin). Even Hodgson managed to make a striker a very good CM (Dembele)! So why McClaren can't use Sissoko and Wijnaldum as CMs is beyond me.

Yeah, and Sissoko is not an excellent RM anyways. And what's the point in splashing the cash for Thauvin when a CM is played as RM? I just can't understand it. And Siem de Jong, if he can't find his way in the starting XI as the current situation, he must be extremely bad in playing football. Former Ajax captain, what more could you expect? Newcastle is going down with McClaren.

Personally I'm stuck between benching Vardy or Mahrez. But probably the latter, although I always have a feeling I'll regret benching Mahrez.

yueah I'd bemch Mahrez between the two, especially as Vardy seems to be on pens if he hasnt scored up to that point in the match

Pelle is out, I can see City get a CS. Easy decision to bench Mane, what has he brought to your team lately? A lot of one points, and Mahrez?

Wenger is an absolute tool. Seriously how much of an idiot can you be. Sanchez knackered and has minor injury problems, I know, I'll play him for 90 minutes in a midweek game we had won in the first half! I wonder why half my squad is always injured? Seriously starting to think the guy has lost the plot.

It's the same story every season. Runs his key players into the ground. I consider Arsenal my 'english team', because i like how they play footy, but Wenger is a terrible season manager

.....Both giroud and bellerin were on the verge of getting injured. They had small knocks after the wba game but were just fit enough to start. Wenger didnt want to risk it

He also shifted sanchez up front when giroud went off to prevent him from running too much. And he didnt, which was a good decision

And those quotes are enough to get Arsene off the hook for the hundreds of other scenarios just like this? He always plays his key players when he shouldn't/doesn't have to

The sheffield game is the only one this season where he started a player that didnt need to. The game in tuesday was a big one and he took a gamble of not subbing a fitter sanchez or subbing giroud who was in red zone

Like who and when? You can always say "hundreds of times he did this or that" Arsenal has more and less the same problem with injuries as anybody in this world.

Bayern, Barcelona, Juventus have the similar amount of injuries yet no one writes off managerial skills of their managers.

As for doing it over and over...its got more to do with the players really. How many times have giroud cazorla sanchez monreal etc. Got injured during their time arsenal? Hardly. Its basically the same player getting knocked over who are basically not strong enough

The mistake wenger has made here is not getting rid of them

Maybe so, but I just know I have said this same thing on so many occassions, when im sat puzzled as to why a certain player starts or plays 90 and then they inevitably end up on the treatment table two weeks later. It does my head in. In this case fair enough those quotes do shed light on it but it begs the question as to why hes starting so many not 100% players midweek vs Zagreb in the first place

"Giroud had a little problem with his ankle over the weekend but I decided to give [him] a breather. Hector Bellerin, I took him off because he had a groin problem just before so I had to take them off meaning I could not take Alexis off. We now
              have five days to recover.
              on Alexis not getting tired…
I would have loved to do it tonight (rest Alexis) but I [had] two different options. Once it is 3-0 you are not in a position where you need him to work back and when you put him central up front you can spare a bit of energy. It is not like you have to go up and down. I tried to compromise a little bit and give a break to Giroud and not take a risk with Bellerin."

He "had" to take off Bellerin and Giroud because they had some troubles (a knock or something) before the game, so Alexis has to stay on.

WIth Giroud the only fit striker and Bellerin miles ahead of Debuchy I can see him making that decision.

And Alexis wants to play everything.

Fair point though about Wenger, but in this case it worked out right?

Im watching the City v Liverpool game, Im utterly stunned by Coutinho. On top of that I get to see an incredible performance from Firmino. What a display.

But even when we didn't score, it bordered on hilarious tricks.
When Cout had the ball passed in to him at pace, he plucked it out the air, flicked over Mangala's head to Frimino who just missed.

I initially dropped Sanchez on my wildcard, but I then decided to take him back for a 0.2 loss. Now that he has a minor injury:
    Sanchez or no Sanchez?
