Captain Sensible – Gameweek 14

It’s time for our pre-Gameweek members article now, as we assess the leading captaincy contenders for the weekend ahead. We take a three-part approach that includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

For the second Gameweek running, Romelu Lukaku takes a commanding lead (39%) at the peak of our Captain Poll. The Belgian hitman has excelled since Everton’s schedule shifted in difficulty from Gameweek 11, carding four goals and two assists across three outings. A trip to Bournemouth on Saturday looks ripe for further attacking returns, given that the south-coast club rank top for goals conceded (27) this term.

He’s unlikely to last the distance at home to Southampton, but Sergio Aguero’s unparalleled goal threat has convinced 16% of voters to hand him the captain’s armband. The 13.1-priced forward enjoyed a wave of investment off the back of his sublime finish against Liverpool but faces a testing afternoon trying to break down a Saints rearguard that’s been breached just four times on their travels. Elsewhere in the Manchester City camp, confidence in Kevin De Bruyne (1%) has waned by virtue of a single assist in four matches.

Having bagged a brace for Arsenal in midweek, Alexis Sanchez (11%) – who’s expected to shake off a minor hamstring niggle – claimed the third biggest backing. The Chile international failed to deliver attacking returns in his previous quartet of starts but will fancy his chances against a Norwich City outfit that’s recorded one clean sheet throughout the campaign. Despite notching nine assists in his last seven outings, Mesut Ozil (5%) sits outside the top five due to his limited goal threat.

Harry Kane attracted 6% of the vote ahead of Tottenham Hotspur’s home tie against Chelsea. Although the Blues are displaying signs of resurgence with back-to-back wins and clean sheets, Kane has chalked up 12 goals in his last 14 London derbies and netted a brace and two assists in the corresponding fixture last season.

Odion Ighalo (5%) has been directly involved (six goals and three assists) in nine of Watford’s last 10 goals. The Hornets’ upcoming road clash against Aston Villa provides a platform for that trend to continue, given that the West Midlanders conceded 11 times in their previous five fixtures.

With four goals and an assist in three starts, Philippe Coutinho (3%) is the league’s form midfielder. A home tie against Swansea City bodes well for the Brazilian’s attacking prospects, yet a minor hamstring complaint diminishes his appeal. Coutinho’s compatriot Roberto Firmino (1%) makes his first appearance in our Captain Poll, having tallied a goal and two assists at the Etihad.

Jamie Vardy (2%) could set a new Premier League record for scoring in consecutive matches (11) when Leicester play host to Manchester United. The fact that the Red Devils conceded one goal in the last five Gameweeks suggests that Vardy will need to be on top form to eclipse Ruud van Nistelrooy’s achievement.

Brought in Aguero. 1 FT left.
Who's the best replacement for KdB? Got Ozil, Mahrez, Bolasie and Hoolahan in mid.
    Suggestions?

New chip proposal for next season.

A Granville chip. Reverse transfer aka Coutinho one. You just get back your previous transfer and you get back the pts from your previous player. In example.

Granville does Coutinho out, KDB in
Coutinho scored 15 or so, KDB scores 2 so Granville uses his chip.

    The result

Coutinho gets back in your team next week with the 15pts, and you lose the KDB and the 2 pts. Also you lose your next transfer as a punishment. Will help lot of regrets no?

    Thoughts?

Way over complicated, and rewards poor decision making. Thumbs down.

IMO, the game would be better if it were simplified. For example, allow managers to carry over as many transfers as they choose to hoard. No limit. Also, eliminate the 50% sales tax (transfer fee) to create more of a strategic dilemma about trading for points vs trading for team value. These features, which are actually simplifications to the existing rules, are commonly seen in other fantasy games.

Although it IS annoying, the 50% profit tax keeps it WAY more level.

It makes it tougher to build up value, which rewards a long term game. Otherwise people would have TV of 120m by christmas and comfortably fit in all of the most expensive players.

I like the transfers idea but not the other one. It makes it more interesting in my opinion to have to pay 50% commission.

The commissioners of FPL can mitigate a 120m buy anyone situation from quickly evolving by having more expensive players at the outset of the season. So, Aguero might be 15m instead of 13m (whatever the right calculus needs to be).

I just think a few minor tweaks could make it better and lead to greater roster differentiation. Anything that increases the variance in roster composition would be an improvement. Making the game or level, to me, is antithetical to the whole concept. More level means more roster homogeneity.

Another minor tweak would be to increase price volatility a tad to further add some motivational differences in how one uses their precious transfers (eg, to grab a rising train, or to grab a player with a clearly favorable fixture prime to score big).

Bringing Kane in for Pelle and need to downgrade a player to save 1.1m:

    Butland, Ruddy,
    Kolarov, Cedric, Moreno, Francis, Huth
    Sanchez, KDB, Mahrez, Barkley, Willian
    Lukaku, Vardy, Kane

    Thinking either
    A) KDB to Sterling / Yaya
    B)Or Willian to Lanzini
    C) Obvious other one is Sanchez to Ozil, but feel like sticking with Sanchez.

    Keep getting different answers.

    Start three of:

    A) Kolarov (SOU)
    B) Bellerin (nor)
    C) Dawson (whm)
    D) Nyom (avl)
    E) Smalling (lei)

Currently B,C and D. I have DDG too if that matters.

Mane -> Firmino for a hit? Judging from Klopp's comments it looks like Firmino will be playing upfront again.

    The El Classico chip

This week you get to pick any player from Barca or Real Madrid and get their equivalent FPL points for the week.

    Prediction for this weekend:

    Sanchez blanks, Hazard explodes.

Everyone will be doing Sanchez > Hazard next week.

    You heard it here first.

No team in the EPL strikes faster than Claudio Ranieri’s counterattacking Leicester City, and no side works harder to slow down the game than the Red Devils.

    The Daniel chip.

Every time a rival in your mini-league logs into FPL a shout of 'JUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUHHHHUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU' is played at full volume and cannot be turnt down for the duration of their time on FPL.
