Suspensions

The Suspension Tightrope – Gameweek 20

The next Suspension Tightrope of the season is already up and running after Newcastle’s Jack Colback earned his ninth caution of the campaign in yesterday’s 1-0 loss at the Emirates. If the midfielder is booked at any point between now and Sunday of Gameweek 33 (April 9), he’ll earn an automatic two-match ban.

With 18 rounds of league fixtures still to play out, Colback looks in line to break an unprecedented record – no player has ever amassed 15 Premier League bookings in a single season, with six players – Olivier Dacourt, Mark Hughes, Paul Ince, Robbie Savage, Cheick Tiote and Lee Cattermole – all accruing 14 over previous campaigns.

Colback is one of seven players on the New Year’s Tightrope. Norwich’s weekend match-winner Alex Tettey is tucked in just behind on eight yellows, whilst Liverpool midfielders Emre Can and Lucas sit on seven apiece, along with City’s Eliaquim Mangala, Stoke left-back Erik Pieters and Tottenham’s scorer at Everton, Deli Alli.

Elsewhere yesterday, a caution for Cattermole in Sunderland’s 3-1 home win over Villa means he has now earned 83 yellows in the Premier League – that takes him to eleventh overall in the list. United’s Wayne Rooney is eighth on 86 bookings, though Everton’s veteran midfielder Gareth Barry leads the way on 109 top-flight yellows.

In terms of team card counts, Villa’s four cautions yesterday means they are now level with Tottenham as the most culpable – both sides have collected 43 bookings, with Erik Lamela earning his sixth of the campaign at Goodison. West Brom are next best on 40 yellows.

Looking at the new bans, Bournemouth’s Simon Francis is set to miss next weekend’s FA Cup trip to Birmingham after he was sent off for denying a goal scoring opportunity during the Cherries’ goalless draw at Leicester.

Post-match, manager Eddie Howe confirmed that, although he disagreed with the decision, he won’t contest Francis’ dismissal:

“I didn’t think it (Francis’ challenge) was a foul from my angle, he definitely touched the ball. It was a great recovery tackle. It’s not a foul, a penalty or a sending off. It was a very even game before that point, a high tempo game and very high quality. We had some great chances in the first half but when we went down to 10 men we showed character and it’s a great point for us. We won’t appeal the red card as it’s a one-game ban and the FA Cup is coming up.”

Victor Wanyama, meanwhile, will serve a two-match ban after he was dismissed in Southampton’s defeat at Norwich. The Kenyan has already been dismissed once this season (in Gameweek 11 at Bournemouth) and will therefore have his suspension extended by an additional match, which rules him out of the FA Cup encounter against Palace and the Gameweek 21 home match with Watford.

Wanyama took to social media to say sorry for his sending off after he came under post-match criticism from Saints boss Ronald Koeman:

“I would just like to apologise to the manager, fans and everyone at the club for my red card yesterday. It was reckless and irresponsible and I should have used my experience to have not let it happen, especially when I was on a yellow card. I now just want to focus on getting back on the pitch and helping the team as much as I can.”

Stoke’s Geoff Cameron is set to miss the next three domestic matches after he was sent off for violent conduct in the weekend derby loss at West Brom. The US international is sidelined for the upcoming Capital One Cup clash with Liverpool and FA Cup trip to Doncaster in addition to the Gameweek 21 home match against Norwich. Mark Hughes has suggested he may appeal the decision, though, with Cameron’s sending off meaning that the Potters have matched West Ham for total red cards (four) this season. Three of those dismissals have arrived against the Baggies, with Ibrahim Afellay and Charlie Adam also sent packing in a Gameweek 4 home loss to Tony Pulis’ team.

Those players join Watford’s Nathan Ake on the naughty step. The on-loan defender served the first of a three-match suspension during yesterday’s home loss to City and will also miss upcoming clashes with Newcastle (FA Cup) and Southampton (Gameweek 21) before returning to contention for the trip to Swansea on January 18.

    Cannot decide between these 2:

    Ramsey to
    A) Payet
    B) Alli

My gut instinct says to go with Alli and wait until Payet is back fully fit and transfer Arnie out for him.

Or should I wait for when the cup are over to make the transfers? Thoughts?

Thank you. On a constructive note, what don't you like about the defence? The defence is valued at 23.5m. Can you field a better defence at that budget?

You shouldn't really be fielding a defence that cheap, as defenders have just as much value as attacking players. There's no point spending £35m on your forwards if the points you gain from that are lost by your defence. Better to downgrade one to a cheaper player e.g. Ighalo, and use the few million saved to upgrade your defenders.

For example, if you get rid of Costa (couldn't choose who to drop) and get in Ighalo, you've saved £4.4m, which would allow you to upgrade at least two of your defenders, let's go for Moreno and Wollscheid, giving you £13.9m to spend, which is enough to get in any two defenders, so you could pick Alderweireld and Dann, the two highest scoring, or whoever looks like they have good fixtures (in particular home fixtures) for the rest of the season.

To illustrate this, Alderweireld and Dann have scored 182 points in 20 GWs, projecting this to the end of the season (just taking an average score per week) gives 345.8. Moreno and Wollscheid project to score 216.6.

Ighalo has scored 129 points so far, projecting him to 245.1 at the end of the season.

Given Costa seems to be experiencing something of an upturn in form, it's not really fair to use his results from this season. However, last season he scored 150 points in total, so there's no reason to believe he will score the 178.1 points he's projected to need to equal Ighalo by the end of the season.

So if you downgrade one of your forwards and upgrade your defence, you'll probably end up with about 150 points extra.

Is there any point taking a -4 hit to do Payet > Barkley to beat the price rise, when Payet would be my 1st sub? You take hits to start someone, right?

My midfield for GW21 would be Mahrez - Ozil - KdB - Alli

Had 2 FTs, so I've done Ramsey, Vardy > KdB, Ighalo

    Is the template finally broken?

Vardy, Mahrez, Ighalo, Deeney, Kane, Ramsey, Barkley, Coutinho , KDB, Ozil, Shaqiri and Arnautovic all blanking with a 9 day gap til the next gameweek.

More options opened up this week in Martial, Rooney, Aguero, Payet, Willian, Oscar, Costa, Alli, Yaya and Antonio all coming into the mix.

2016 just got a bit more exciting. If this continues, we can expect the return of the concepts of VORP, and TV. This in effect, may further make us reconsider our teams as we look to use up the budget appropriately and disperse the extra cash in different ways.

Hopefully the ranks might become a bit easier to climb too as the top 10,000k template team will dissolve as the weeks go by.

        Value over replacement player.

Basically let's say Ighalo scored 10 points and Aguero scores 10 points in a given GW.

Aguero is over double the cost of Ighalo, so we say Ighalo's points per million is a lot higher, making him valuable. This allows 5/6mil to be reinvested into the team and strengthen defence/ midfield with a supposedly better "replacement player"

But this concept only applies when there is little or no cash ITB. If a team scored 75 points with 6mil ITB and a team scores 75 points with 0mil ITB, the concept of VORP doesn't apply when comparing them because the first team has not reinvested the extra cash.

So concepts of valuable players or players "worth their pricetag" only make sense when the 100mil budget is being used fully.

I think there is a definite shift yeah. Happens often when the balance rights itself in the second half of the season. Teams/players will revert to the mean.

from what I can see the biggest shift in the template will be the return from injury of aguero and payet (If they can stay fit especially aguero) plus the emergence of alli as more than your average cheap 5th midfielder.

I would say the likes of ozil kane ighalo have enough credits in the bank to withstand a couple of blank weeks tho having said that now we've got a 10 day break till the next gw its possible a lot of managers could almost out-think themselves and splash the cash.

      bring it on

Yup agree with all of that

Hazard could have made matters worse for the template too had he not picked up an injury

Though maybe e have to ask, are Chelsea playing better BECAUSE Hazard was n't on the pitch?

Things have certainly got a lot more interesting

I haven't been able to figure out Chelsea all season to be honest, personally I would always say their team is far better when it contains hazard but watching them today after he went off they did look good I have to admit.

it won't make me particularly keen to put any Chelsea players in (maybe just maybe a defender aside) but certainly a lot of people will take notice now

I don't think Hazard is a serious FPL option even if he is fit. Oscar, Costa and Willian look far more interesting. Sanchez will put a cat amongst the pigeons too.

together with his price tag i'd guess the form of ozil may make sanchez slightly less of a must than previously, together with the fact that some players may already have 3 arsenal players which makes a transfer more problematic.

agree about hazard but its fair to say if he has a month off then suddenly comes back and hits 2 or 3 with a motm performance he'll be an option again

You really need to stop concentrating so much on TV. I think it is a massive failing of this community as it very seldom matters in the long run yet every year a lot of people on here seem to place huge relevance on it.

      I reckon so.

Chelsea reappearing, Sanchez, Aguero and Payet returning and some resemblance of attacking threat has me considering an early wildcard rather than saving for a DGW
