Suspensions

The Suspension Tightrope – Gameweek 20

The next Suspension Tightrope of the season is already up and running after Newcastle’s Jack Colback earned his ninth caution of the campaign in yesterday’s 1-0 loss at the Emirates. If the midfielder is booked at any point between now and Sunday of Gameweek 33 (April 9), he’ll earn an automatic two-match ban.

With 18 rounds of league fixtures still to play out, Colback looks in line to break an unprecedented record – no player has ever amassed 15 Premier League bookings in a single season, with six players – Olivier Dacourt, Mark Hughes, Paul Ince, Robbie Savage, Cheick Tiote and Lee Cattermole – all accruing 14 over previous campaigns.

Colback is one of seven players on the New Year’s Tightrope. Norwich’s weekend match-winner Alex Tettey is tucked in just behind on eight yellows, whilst Liverpool midfielders Emre Can and Lucas sit on seven apiece, along with City’s Eliaquim Mangala, Stoke left-back Erik Pieters and Tottenham’s scorer at Everton, Deli Alli.

Elsewhere yesterday, a caution for Cattermole in Sunderland’s 3-1 home win over Villa means he has now earned 83 yellows in the Premier League – that takes him to eleventh overall in the list. United’s Wayne Rooney is eighth on 86 bookings, though Everton’s veteran midfielder Gareth Barry leads the way on 109 top-flight yellows.

In terms of team card counts, Villa’s four cautions yesterday means they are now level with Tottenham as the most culpable – both sides have collected 43 bookings, with Erik Lamela earning his sixth of the campaign at Goodison. West Brom are next best on 40 yellows.

Looking at the new bans, Bournemouth’s Simon Francis is set to miss next weekend’s FA Cup trip to Birmingham after he was sent off for denying a goal scoring opportunity during the Cherries’ goalless draw at Leicester.

Post-match, manager Eddie Howe confirmed that, although he disagreed with the decision, he won’t contest Francis’ dismissal:

“I didn’t think it (Francis’ challenge) was a foul from my angle, he definitely touched the ball. It was a great recovery tackle. It’s not a foul, a penalty or a sending off. It was a very even game before that point, a high tempo game and very high quality. We had some great chances in the first half but when we went down to 10 men we showed character and it’s a great point for us. We won’t appeal the red card as it’s a one-game ban and the FA Cup is coming up.”

Victor Wanyama, meanwhile, will serve a two-match ban after he was dismissed in Southampton’s defeat at Norwich. The Kenyan has already been dismissed once this season (in Gameweek 11 at Bournemouth) and will therefore have his suspension extended by an additional match, which rules him out of the FA Cup encounter against Palace and the Gameweek 21 home match with Watford.

Wanyama took to social media to say sorry for his sending off after he came under post-match criticism from Saints boss Ronald Koeman:

“I would just like to apologise to the manager, fans and everyone at the club for my red card yesterday. It was reckless and irresponsible and I should have used my experience to have not let it happen, especially when I was on a yellow card. I now just want to focus on getting back on the pitch and helping the team as much as I can.”

Stoke’s Geoff Cameron is set to miss the next three domestic matches after he was sent off for violent conduct in the weekend derby loss at West Brom. The US international is sidelined for the upcoming Capital One Cup clash with Liverpool and FA Cup trip to Doncaster in addition to the Gameweek 21 home match against Norwich. Mark Hughes has suggested he may appeal the decision, though, with Cameron’s sending off meaning that the Potters have matched West Ham for total red cards (four) this season. Three of those dismissals have arrived against the Baggies, with Ibrahim Afellay and Charlie Adam also sent packing in a Gameweek 4 home loss to Tony Pulis’ team.

Those players join Watford’s Nathan Ake on the naughty step. The on-loan defender served the first of a three-match suspension during yesterday’s home loss to City and will also miss upcoming clashes with Newcastle (FA Cup) and Southampton (Gameweek 21) before returning to contention for the trip to Swansea on January 18.

Why on earth is anyone selling Ighalo? Did they not watch the Watford v Man Sheikhy game at the weekend? The most impressive striker that day was not Kun.

^This. The reason why he isn't in more teams than he is, is that he plays for Watford, and both money and in-form forwards with decent fixtures have been a plenty.

People routinely price bias. It's why it took so long for people to believe in Kane last season and Ramsey the season before. For some reason there's a psychological comfort in buying an expensive player as if their points are special.

No, with Kane the problem was that for some while he wasn't nailed on. Once it was clear he was going to play at least quite often, he was in every team _because_ of his low price. The unsustainable conversion rate was a small worry, because his price was so low and playing for a relatively big club it was expected that he'll get chances. But had he been more expensive, as he is this season, that would not be good enough - as is reflected in his ownership this season.

With Ramsey, there was a deep midfield position, rotation potential and unsustainable conversion rate that put many off.

The worry of being nailed on faded by October lol...still it took a while for people to believe.

Hell there are people THIS season who only just bought Mahrez!

On Kane: he didn't even start to score regularly before December. By the end of October, he had not started a single PL match.

On Mahrez: Those must be mighty few. Many had him from early on but _sold_ him because of the unlikeliness of Leicester and Mahrez to continue their run, not because of Mahrez's low price. And what I recall of those stubborn people who refused to buy Ramsey, Yaya and Mahrez, this was the reason: unsustainable conversion rates are unlikely to be sustained for long. I haven't heard anybody ever saying that he won't buy some player because he's too cheap. Heck, I've seen this same Ramsey/Yaya stubbornness here on Özil, and Özil is _not_ cheap.

...and Kane's ownership rose immediately when he started to enchain starts, even when he didn't score, exactly because he was an extremely cheap player starting upfront for a relatively big club. In early January, when he scored that big haul against Chelsea, the drama was that he was on the bench of half the FPL teams. After that, he became unbenchable (and not just in every team). But before it, he had only scored 6 goals in PL of which 1 was against his own team.

I think you're substituting in the low price argument for the actual reason they're low priced to begin with. Players are priced lowly because they have no recent history of returns. People are wary of new kids on the block because they have limited information to go on. Its also explains why Costa's ownership took so long to rise last year, it was because he was new to the league. Aguero on the other hand, people rush to get in because they know he has an illustrious history.

All seems good. Martial a potential differential if he plays anything like yesterday every week. But so many good striking options ahead of him. VVD is shaky though, Saints look in fretful currently (Arsenal result aside)

Depay is garbage, and Villa are down so Ayew not worth it. Both got to go.

Carroll a pretty bold differential. Their fixtures are OK and if Payet starts firing then he could be worthwhile short term - but history says he'll be injured again in a month.

My thoughts exactly re: the injury. But while he's fit and Payet is back, he will start and he will get chances? Plus fixtures don't matter for westham, they seem to do fine scoring goals against anyone (now Payet is back)

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/fa-cup/fixtures

Any one giving thoughts as to likely FA Cup squads?

Half the Prem teams play each other. Who will play a strong side to get through those playing stronger or weaker teams?
Many Premiership teams have come unstuck in the past playing weak squads against lower division sides and ended up having to go to a replay.

    What are your thoughts?

Would love to bring in Payet, but my mids have good fixtures this week. Should I tinker or leave it?

    Front 8

    Ozil / KDB / Willian / Arnie / Alli
    Giroud / Kane / Lukaku

    7.7 itb

Hate looking at Payet's price rising so fast.

It could go up tonight . The price change sites are not very predictable this year and anything above 80 could potentially rise . It's hard to tell with Hennessey because he is a goalie and there won't be alot of transfers in in comparison to other positions . I'm really not sure tbh . I wouldn't rush him in if that is what you are asking ?

    For the guys that consider Smith for their Aguero enablers and whatnot, beware;
Elphick is due back, and that will cause a rotation inthe backline, which will most likely leave Smith out of the starting back 4.
