Tracking The Fantasy Football Veterans – Gameweek 27

Gameweek 27 was reduced to eight games due to the Capital One Cup Final and as we expected the veterans took advantage. Many of this group of 34 Fantasy stalwarts, made up of Hall of Fame leaders and Fantasy Football Scout contributors, rocketed up the rankings as a result of careful planning in the previous weeks that ensured they comfortably fielded a strong XI. They will surely be optimistic about similar returns in Gameweek 30, when once again the fixture list is reduced due to domestic cup scheduling.

TRANSFERS

Because of the blanks, there was a high frequency of transfers this week – 1.47 transfers per team.

Transfers by positions (% of all transfers in bracket)

– Goalkeepers: (4.00%)

– Defenders: (30.00%)

– Midfielders: (36.00%)

– Forwards: (30.00%)

Transfers In:

– Jamie Vardy (LEI) – 30.00%

– Marko Arnautovic (STO) – 12.00%

– Christian Fuchs (LEI) – 8.00%

All three players performed well. Jamie Vardy earned a fortunate assist for the goal, while Leicester’s defence earned their fifth consecutive clean sheet at home and Christian Fuchs earned the maximum bonus points. Marko Arnautovic scored a brace in a 2-1 home win over Aston Villa.

Transfers Out:

– Romelu Lukaku (EVE) – 26.00%

– Albero Moreno (LIV) – 16.00%

– Roberto Firmino (LIV) – 8.00%

CAPTAINS

Kavgwk271

Vardy was the top captaincy pick for the veterans, managers overall and amongst top 10,000 managers. His assist for Leonardo Ulloa’s late winner means he’s now scored or assisted in 11 of his 13 appearances at home. Riyad Mahrez disappointed managers who gave him an armband as he failed to register a single accurate attempt on goal.

* stats for top 10,000 teams and overall can be found here.

It is worth mentioning that many managers in the top 10,000 have already used their strong chips, such as triple captaincy. When we look at overall stats and player ownerships, we must also consider that around half of the 3.6 million teams involved in Fantasy Premier League are ghost ships that have long since been forgotten about. This shows us how important blank Gameweeks are to those who spend time tinkering with their teams.

OVERALL RANKINGS

After Gameweek 26, the average overall position of all 34 veteran teams was 133,436, but now, their overall position is 116,029 –  17,407 places better than last week. This means that the bulk of the veterans (67.65%) gained a green arrow in Gameweek 27. In addition, the veterans’ average Gameweek 27 score was 47.18 points. This compares exceptionally well against the average score overall (33.30 points) and is also better than the top 10,000 managers’ average (42.70 points). This was another great week for the veterans that shows how long-term planning and managing the blanks and double Gameweeks will be key to their ascent.

Kavali `In Italy for 30 years under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder, and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and the Renaissance. In Switzerland they had brotherly love - they had 500 years of democracy and peace, and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock.`

Happy picture gets rolled out again!

Another good week for the veterans with careful planning helping take advantage of a very low overall average. This bodes well indeed for the vets during dgwks and gwk 30.

Just seen Man C at 6/1 for the PL and had to back them. Way too big a price. Reasoning is:-
Leicester - is it sustainable? 2/1 no thanks
Spurs - some tough games to come - 2/1 too short
Arsenal - huge ability to bottle it 5/2

Only my fourth season - but I'm firmly in the veteran mold.
For gw27: Firmino and Moreno out, Arnautovic and Fuchs in.
My team only has a few deviations from the veteran template...
We are definitely sheep. I'm hoping this veteran mentality will lead us to ever-greener pastures and not off a cliff.

It is important to track the most popular players amongst the veterans. For example, you click on some player on FPL and see his ownership of 35%. But is it for real? Is it for real when you know that more than 50% of teams are ghost ships. Or, do I wanna know who are the most popular players among the top 10,000 teams when almost 50% of them used Triple Captain chip and more then 60% used Bench Boost? They and their players will not be for long in top 10K.

...and most of the starters were at home too. Careful planning indeed.
