The Digest – Gameweek 31

Southampton’s in-form frontman spearheads a dramatic win over Liverpool. Norwich’s bid for survival takes a step in the right direction, whilst Riyad Mahrez and Harry Kane stake yet another claim to remain in our wildcards plans for the run-in, despite the lack of a double.

The Player

A goal and two assists in Southampton’s stunning comeback win over Liverpool continued Graziano Pelle’s recent return to form.

Having bagged a brace in a 2-1 win at Stoke in the previous Gameweek, the Italian served up a 15-point haul on Saturday – his highest of the season – to take his tally to nine goals and seven assists in 20 league starts.

Pelle’s weekend haul means he’s racked up 28 points in the last two Gameweeks – put into perspective, Sergio Aguero has produced 30 points in his previous seven.

Granted, the Saints’ lack of a double Gameweek is a major deterrent for any would-be investors with wildcards in hand right now. Nonetheless, Pelle’s penchant for going on scoring streaks – he racked up four goals and five assists in five outings between Gameweeks 4-8 – suggests he could still thrive as a Fantasy option over the run-in.

Sitting just four points off fourth spot, the Saints’ testing trip to Leicester is then followed by a trio of encounters with Newcastle, Everton and Villa’s dodgy defences. With a Champions League spot still in the balance, the Italian’s renewed confidence may well prove decisive as Ronald Koeman’s side look to build momentum on the back of their weekend win against the Merseysiders.

The Team

Whilst Newcastle and Sunderland had to settle for a point apiece in the Tyne-Wear derby, relegation rivals Norwich distanced themselves from the bottom three with a vital away win at West Brom.

Having ground out a goalless draw with City the previous weekend, Alex Neil’s men managed to nullify a Baggies side that had picked up ten points in four, thanks to a trio of wins over Everton, Palace and United and a draw at the King Power.

With their confidence on the up, Norwich are showing they have the stomach for a fight and the stats show they have tightened up considerably at the back, conceding just one big chance over their last four matches. For those who have already played their wildcards, the likes of Timm Klose – with five bonus points collected over the last two – is emerging as a late-season budget enabler at 4.2. Wes Hoolahan, with two goals and a pair of assists in his last four home fixtures, and weekend goal hero Robbie Brady (two goals in his last four starts) may prove influential in the absence of the injured Nathan Redmond.

Up next for the Carrow Road club is a trio of fixtures that may ultimately determined their top-flight status. The Canaries entertain both Newcastle and Sunderland in a pair of proverbial six-pointers, with a trip to Selhurst Park – where Palace have lost six on the bounce – sandwiched in between.

With a double Gameweek 37 offering back-to-back home encounters against United and Watford, Norwich may yet harbour some Fantasy appeal as Neil attempts to prevent a slide back into the Championship.

The Talking Point

Last week’s double Gameweek announcements give us plenty to plan and prepare for over the current international break.

As we look to assemble our squads to take advantage of the remaining schedule, there’s a concern that going “all in” on the double Gameweek sides, and using a bench boost chip to field 15 players with a pair of fixtures, may be a little overzealous.

This is compounded by the recent showings of Riyad Mahrez and Harry Kane, who are becoming increasingly crucial to their side’s title bids.

Whereas Jamie Vardy has scored just once in the last seven Gameweeks, Mahrez has averaged 6.7 points over the same period and netted Leicester’s winner in two of the last three. Kane 16-point return at home to Bournemouth, meanwhile, means he has delivered successive double-figure hauls for the first time this term. At a time when Sergio Aguero is struggling for form, the Spurs man has proven a very capable armband alternative.

The Gameweek 35 schedule, where six teams – including five of the sides with doubles in the previous round of fixtures – also has to be factored into our planning. Whilst the likes of West Ham, Everton and United face the weekend off, Leicester and Spurs are both handed home comforts, with Mahrez hosting Swansea and Kane welcoming West Brom to the Lane.

Given that the duo are two of the three most popular players in Fantasy Premier League, with 68% and 46% ownerships respectively, parting company won’t come without risk – Mahrez has 11 double-figure hauls to his name this season, whilst Kane is now up to seven, highlighting their explosive potential.

Whilst the allure of the double Gameweeks is irresistible, maintaining a balance to our 15-man squads – in terms of both form players and fixtures – will be key. Obviously, opting for a double Gameweek player could pay off but given their current levels of form and reliability, is parting company with one, or both, an unnecessary risk too far?

Most on here saying with a lot of certainty that Rashford will definitely be dropped once Rooney comes in.

Rooney has a higher chance of playing behind Martial instead of Mata/Herrera rather than replacing Rashford if you ask me.

Its not a certainty that Rashford WILL be dropped that most on here are advocating.

Not a certainty, but if you're on a WC, you can't risk it.

I'd wager Martial / Rooney start at least one game up front in his place.

Nobody says it is a certainty. But it is the more reasonable possibility rather than Rooney being benched to play Rashford. No?

thing is, on here, writing "this is what is more logically reasonable than what your are suggesting, but of course it might not turn out my way and you could be right" is too long to type and cumbersome. One would rather, "No, I am right" 😛

True, but who else to go for?

Cech looks the prime option, but can cover him with Bell / Kosc.

Adrian looks good, but can cover him with Ogbonna / Reid.

Schmeichel covered by Fuchs / Huth / Simpson..

Smalling is expensive as hell though for United.

Thing is, if Rashford does not play both games, he is likely to play villa which is most points potential as van gall more likely to give him a go, and the cash he frees up adds a lot of value to rest of the team.

Which 3 of these would you prefer for only next GW?

    1) Payet (CPL) or Sanchez (WAT)
    2) Kane (liv)
    3) Alli (liv)
    4) Arnie (SWA)
    5) Siggy (sto)

Currently on (1) with Payet and (2) (4) but Siggy is in decent form and Swans play good away...Benching Kane also seems little foolish considering his current form

    I think I've cracked it - Episode 2:

    Robles / Eliot
    Bellers / Rojo / Sakho / Nyom / Simpson
    Payet / Ozil / Sanchez / Coutinho / Mahrez
    Kane / Kun / Deeney

    Key points:

    - I see a MUN & ARS defender as a must, with a potential four cleans sheets on offer
    - The midfield has the potential to explode
    - Keeps Mahrez and Kane in play
    - Looking ahead, gives me the basis for a decent GW37 team, as well as taking into account Arsenal's superb fixtures.

    Concerns:

    - Deeney.
    - Weak keepers.
    - Are Rojo and Sakho sure starters?

Again this may help with your planning but am also interested to hear your criticisms!

First thing I did on my drafts was to put De Gea, Smalling and Martial in my team... they have the best fixtures so I want to be as guaranteed as possible to get 6 outings from those players.

But it looks like I'm going to have to go without Aguero, so that I can still afford the likes of Ozil/Sanchez/Coutinho/Firmino and still have pretty nailed on options.

Hmm - are you set on Simpson? Might be worth looking at an Olsson / Delaney of this world just to increase the DGWness

      As for your concerns

      - Deeney will get pens, but there's questionable Watford involvement in, well, anything, as they focus on the FA Cup. I can't see Troy being dropped but the motivation for the league may well have gone now, as many have pointed out. Seems the best option in that price bracket, though
      - Keepers are pretty cack, yes - I'd be more tempted by Mignolet at least rather than the double budget, could well get a total of 8 points from them both for just appearance. Maybe try to have 1 who might well get a cleanie...
      - Rojo and Sakho both look nailed on - Mama is basically Skrtel's replacement as the defensive mainstay for 'Pool, and Rojo looks to be playing on the left back in Shaw's absence.

Thanks for the input - much appreciated.

I think I'll go with Simpson because of the week before and after. Nothing about WBA appeals.

Concern about Deeney will stay for a while. But their 2 x DGW and fixtures look pretty good.

        1. Individual

Fair does - I think if I keep more than 2 SGWers I might as well hit the TC in 34 then bench boost in 37.

Only reason I "pick on" Simpson is that you can easily bring him back in for GW35 (if we're using the FFS strategy of WC 33 --> Roll FT 34 --> 2 FTs for 35) if you've taken a punt on a Palace/Newcastle/whatever asset over the two fixtures.

Totally understand Mahrez and Kane, though - I'll be keeping them, too!

His performances have declined over the last few years. I agree with you, hard to judge given nobody at United has played particularly well with LVG's tactics this season, but when I see Rooney doing stuff like taking far too many heavy touches, putting simple passes into the feet of the opposition etc. I do have serious concerns. With that said, your point is very valid.

I am on this currently. Much more nailed than Rashford in my opinion if I need to ditch Alli. Alli's price is such that very few players are below him and can come near to equal him even with 1 extra match. Lingard just might with the strength of those two fixtures combined with his added nailed-onness compared to Rashford.

##this is what is more logically reasonable than what the Rashford-starts-both-wagon are suggesting, but of course it might not turn out my way and they could be right##

Probably Lingard to be honest, seems to be fairly nailed in the United team but we'd need to see what Rooney's return does for his minutes - he's in my WC too at the moment.

If Iwobi keeps starting (again, watch for minutes after Ramsey returns) he could also be another possible

after a lot of thinkering i came up with this dgw team

    DDG , Elliot

    Kosh , Monreal , Sakho , Rojo , Simpson

    Payet , Ozil , Firmino , Coutinho , Alli

    Aguero , Lukaku , Martial

-as liverpool, utd and arsenal have best fixure i decided to load up on their players

-utd is great defensivl so doubling up + martial punt who will be sold week after

-i am not scared of doubling up at coutinho and firmino

-decided to keep alli and simpson cause of crazy good valute and good fixures before and after dgw

    any room for improvment?

That looks great imo - my only concern would be Monreal (Bellerin is safer) and the lack of either Mahrez or Kane. Sakho and Rojo will need to be assessed between now and then but make sense if they are fit and starting.

How do you think Bellerin is safer?? They both as guaranteed to start as each other, if Gibbs plays with Bellerin the team is too unbalanced because both of them like to bomb forward. Monreal has the positional sense to stay back when Bellerin goes forward

I'm surprised at the amount of Sanchez love in the WCs tbh. He might be explosive but he hasn't hit double figures since October for a reason. He only has 7 goals and 4 assists this season. Personally I think doubling up on the Arsenal defence and using Ozil might be the way to go. The midfield is full of options with Coutinho (6 goals 6 assists), Firmino (8 goals 8 assists), Milner (5 goals 7 assists), Wijnaldum (9 goals 5 assists), Payet (8 goals 9 assists) and Barkley (8 goals 8 assists) proving better value. That would also leave more money for a better forward option - I'd rather spend money on Aguero (16 goals 2 assists) or even Kevin (5 goals 9 assists) than Sanchez.

    1. Taffer
      • 10 Years

KDB away from home though? He does absolutely nothing.

The thing about Sanchez is that he can put two double-figure halls together back to back with ease and his stats are always at the top of the midfield list.

Can you think of another player bar Aguero who can do what Sanchez did vs. Leicester and Utd earlier in the season?

  16. Whats the Huth

    Done a little research.
Basically. It seems that Ozil's stats have been slowly declining since Ramsey got injured. Ozil needs Ramsey. And Ramsey is apparently on the recovery trail and should be back and start both of the DGW34

Sanchez stats on the other hand. Has been on the up. This is linked to welbeck starting games. However, welbeck is not 'nailed' IMO.

Could mean that Ozil will be a better option for the doubles?

Anyone have any opinion on this?

    1. Taffer
      • 10 Years
      8 years, 3 months ago

Sanchez is a must have to be honest - Welbeck's runs drag the defence across the pitch which allow a lot more space for Sanchez to exploit.

Wenger rarely rotates players when they are on form - and Welbeck is definitely on-form (whilst Giroud has been in full donkey mode since Jan).

      1. Whats the Huth
        • 8 Years

Yes I agree with that. Backing up what I said really. But welbeck may not be nailed. And if he isn't. Then Sanchez won't perform as well unfortunately

        1. Taffer

Welbeck is nailed IMO - he is undroppable on current form and the team's all round play has improved immeasurably since he got back.

        Has he. Just comparison

Just thought it explained why Ozil hasn't been performing as well.

For me. I can get either. But not both. I'm still not convinced by Sanchez. But on the other hand. Ozil form is on the slide

3 games does not constitute on the slide imo - it is way to short term. Players do not score and assist every game unless they are Ronaldo or Messi. Mahrez and Kane went through minor blips and have recovered. Ozil is scoring more points because he is playing behind the striker, getting alot of set pieces, and is showing his class. Sanchez will score more goals than him between now and the end of the season but Ozil will set up more.

Okay for those whose planning to BB37 instead of BB34, can you please enlighten me as to how youre going to fit 15 GW37 players then?

I really can't look past this team which is probably the template by GW37 (bar 1-2 variations)

    Robles
    Smalling, Sakho, Creswell
    Coutinho, Payet , Firmino, Barkley
    Costa, Lukaku, Martial

And since there's plenty of WHM, EVE, LIV, MUN who have 2 DGWs, I'm sure you'd have 7-9 in there in GW34 and leads up to 11 by GW37.

For the remainder of the slot for 15 DGW it will be filled by

    GW 34 : MCI / ARS / NEW / CPL / WBA
    GW 37 : CHE / SUN / NOR

    So it's
    Kun, Ozil, Wijnaldum, Bellerin, Elliot
vs Costa, Willian, Antonio*, Ivan, Ruddy

(*I can't find any decent midfielder so I added a WHM player who have brilliant GW37)

In addition to DGW players, we'd like to keep ala Mahrez / Simpson / Kane / Alli / Toby (who also plays GW35 to cover the blank) which has better GW 34-35 than GW 37-38.

TL;DR It's seems like it's easier to pick good 15 players side on GW 34 than GW 37.

I also don't understand this fascination with 15 DGWs, especially in GW 34. It leaves squads unbalanced for before and after, and ignores some of the game's best scorers. Why pick someone playing twice who is a 10 goal a season forward or 5 goal a season midfielder over someone in the form (and with the quality) of Mahrez and Kane? Imo 11-12 DGWs is the way to go with Kane, Mahrez and a Leicester defender retained.

What happened last season is a rarity not the rule.

The allure for me personally, is that if you can get a considerable haul in 34, and go into 35 with 2fts, you can take a couple of hits to sort your team out. A -8 is painless if you can get an extra 20-25pts from your 'extra' players in 34. Picking the right players is, of course, the main stumbling block. I'll prob be a dull conservative tho, and at least keep Alli & Mahrez. Financially a bit crippling to get them back in again.

14 with 5FT's, probably keeping Özil/Sanchez for AVL in GW38 then
But injuries/rotation will of course add to that 😉

    Ouch.

The plan for De Gea & Martial > Robles & Kane for GW35 has been thwarted by Kane's buy back price.

£0.2 million away from the plan of my dreams.

Doh. I think going with Cech is the best option as it gives you a good GK in 35 and less worries. That way you can use any subs on outfield players looking towards GW37.

I can't look past Aguero, Kane, Lukaku.

But I have to, I can't afford this

Yes its too expensive and Considering Ars matches, Sanchez seems a must have...was looking at Martial for Kane...thoughts below?

      Deeney to outscore Lukaku?

Which 3 of these would you prefer for next GW?

    1) Payet (CPL) OR Sanchez (WAT)
    2) Kane (liv)
    3) Alli (liv)
    4) Arnie (SWA)
    5) Siggy (sto)

Currently on (1) with Payet and (2) (4) but Siggy is in decent form and Swans play good away...Benching Kane also seems little foolish considering his current form

Arnie at home not worth it?? Does Siggy has penos now?

was never a fan of Arnie tbh. maybe it is b/c I am stubborn, but thinking without Shaquiri he struggles a bit as does the team

So all this indecision about when to WC makes me wonder, if there was no BB (i.e. a normal season), which GW would you WC in?

I would still do it in 33/34 and set myself up with a nice finish to the season.

I don't think it would have made too much difference

    Better punt before WC?

    A - Payet (CRY) (c) + Wilian (avl)

    B - Sanchez (WAT) (c) + Lanzini (CRY)

Btw, don't know if there's been an article or anything on it, but has anyone thought which is better?

4 extra players with DGW off the bench in a BB situation or TC on a player DGW? Surely TC is the most potent chip of them all, right? And if there are questions about rotation / "nailed-ness" of players in GW37, surely we should be maximising the TC, right?

    Hmm....

Bench boost gives you 4X2 and TC gives 2X3

Bench boost more potent and reliable
