The Digest – Gameweek 31

Southampton’s in-form frontman spearheads a dramatic win over Liverpool. Norwich’s bid for survival takes a step in the right direction, whilst Riyad Mahrez and Harry Kane stake yet another claim to remain in our wildcards plans for the run-in, despite the lack of a double.

The Player

A goal and two assists in Southampton’s stunning comeback win over Liverpool continued Graziano Pelle’s recent return to form.

Having bagged a brace in a 2-1 win at Stoke in the previous Gameweek, the Italian served up a 15-point haul on Saturday – his highest of the season – to take his tally to nine goals and seven assists in 20 league starts.

Pelle’s weekend haul means he’s racked up 28 points in the last two Gameweeks – put into perspective, Sergio Aguero has produced 30 points in his previous seven.

Granted, the Saints’ lack of a double Gameweek is a major deterrent for any would-be investors with wildcards in hand right now. Nonetheless, Pelle’s penchant for going on scoring streaks – he racked up four goals and five assists in five outings between Gameweeks 4-8 – suggests he could still thrive as a Fantasy option over the run-in.

Sitting just four points off fourth spot, the Saints’ testing trip to Leicester is then followed by a trio of encounters with Newcastle, Everton and Villa’s dodgy defences. With a Champions League spot still in the balance, the Italian’s renewed confidence may well prove decisive as Ronald Koeman’s side look to build momentum on the back of their weekend win against the Merseysiders.

The Team

Whilst Newcastle and Sunderland had to settle for a point apiece in the Tyne-Wear derby, relegation rivals Norwich distanced themselves from the bottom three with a vital away win at West Brom.

Having ground out a goalless draw with City the previous weekend, Alex Neil’s men managed to nullify a Baggies side that had picked up ten points in four, thanks to a trio of wins over Everton, Palace and United and a draw at the King Power.

With their confidence on the up, Norwich are showing they have the stomach for a fight and the stats show they have tightened up considerably at the back, conceding just one big chance over their last four matches. For those who have already played their wildcards, the likes of Timm Klose – with five bonus points collected over the last two – is emerging as a late-season budget enabler at 4.2. Wes Hoolahan, with two goals and a pair of assists in his last four home fixtures, and weekend goal hero Robbie Brady (two goals in his last four starts) may prove influential in the absence of the injured Nathan Redmond.

Up next for the Carrow Road club is a trio of fixtures that may ultimately determined their top-flight status. The Canaries entertain both Newcastle and Sunderland in a pair of proverbial six-pointers, with a trip to Selhurst Park – where Palace have lost six on the bounce – sandwiched in between.

With a double Gameweek 37 offering back-to-back home encounters against United and Watford, Norwich may yet harbour some Fantasy appeal as Neil attempts to prevent a slide back into the Championship.

The Talking Point

Last week’s double Gameweek announcements give us plenty to plan and prepare for over the current international break.

As we look to assemble our squads to take advantage of the remaining schedule, there’s a concern that going “all in” on the double Gameweek sides, and using a bench boost chip to field 15 players with a pair of fixtures, may be a little overzealous.

This is compounded by the recent showings of Riyad Mahrez and Harry Kane, who are becoming increasingly crucial to their side’s title bids.

Whereas Jamie Vardy has scored just once in the last seven Gameweeks, Mahrez has averaged 6.7 points over the same period and netted Leicester’s winner in two of the last three. Kane 16-point return at home to Bournemouth, meanwhile, means he has delivered successive double-figure hauls for the first time this term. At a time when Sergio Aguero is struggling for form, the Spurs man has proven a very capable armband alternative.

The Gameweek 35 schedule, where six teams – including five of the sides with doubles in the previous round of fixtures – also has to be factored into our planning. Whilst the likes of West Ham, Everton and United face the weekend off, Leicester and Spurs are both handed home comforts, with Mahrez hosting Swansea and Kane welcoming West Brom to the Lane.

Given that the duo are two of the three most popular players in Fantasy Premier League, with 68% and 46% ownerships respectively, parting company won’t come without risk – Mahrez has 11 double-figure hauls to his name this season, whilst Kane is now up to seven, highlighting their explosive potential.

Whilst the allure of the double Gameweeks is irresistible, maintaining a balance to our 15-man squads – in terms of both form players and fixtures – will be key. Obviously, opting for a double Gameweek player could pay off but given their current levels of form and reliability, is parting company with one, or both, an unnecessary risk too far?

Help needed what would you do for the DGW.

    Currently sitting on the following:

    HENNESSEY, butland

DAWSON, BELLERIN, aldo, van dijk, francis

    PAYET, OZIL, mahrez, alli, king

    AGUERO, vardy, kane.

caps playing double, tempted by the following:

    32: Francis -> Sahko/Moreno
    33: King -> Lanzini
    34: VVD -> MUFC Defender

Leaves me with full team on GW 35 and 9 DGW players.

Could be slightly tempted to swap Ospina in if Cech hasnt returned by then.

0 FTs, I have Kompany, Moreno and Ozil all flagged - would it be worth a -4pt hit to get rid of Kompany?

I'm currently starting Bellerin, Huth and Williams (who will likely concede away to Stoke) so could be worth it if I bring someone like Azpi (playing Villa)

Tactically the hardest thing to plan for of all time! Knowing the right way is very tough. I'm concerned WC for DGW34 could easily backfire. Alli netting and assisting away at Stoke outscoring Firmino (rested for Bournemouth with Dortmund and the Derby upcoming within a week). City flagging, especially away from home. United at home to Watford could have conceeded several, do we really want to ditch Butland and the money tied up on him? So many difficult decisions. I might just take a couple of hits and field 10 DGWers keeping Alli, Kane, Butland, Mahrez, Simpson and unleash my TC on Alexis which I think is the best TC choice out of any of the DGWs left - unless Everton get a TGW. Leaves me with a great chance to WC later on. Alot will depend on what my ML rivals do, don't fancy pulling the trigger on my WC early if they don't.

Butland has averaged 2.8 PPG over the last 13 GWs, why would you keep?

Value tied up in Butland is irrelevant at this stage of the season. So that's on less concern you should have.

    Toby, Dawson, Williams
    Payet, Eriksen, Siggy, Mahrez
    Kane, Aguero, Vardy

    Butland, Fonte, Francis, Stan

WC with this lot or just make the 1 change for a WC next week (probably) ?
What 1 change would you make here if going for the FT.. ?

Change AOA chip to another free transfer chip instead. Much better use.

    1. Sjaugen

Going off previously heard stories, 4 points for AoA would be a bargain

Most gameweeks if AOA is used would result worse score. But the margin is only a few points difference. So this chip is really useless.

Ok so this is the final team for today

    Kasper - Robles
    Bellerin - Gabriel - Rojo - Sakho - Simpson
    Ozil - Firmino - Payet - Mahrez - Antonio
    Kun - Kane - Lukaku

    1) Seems like LEI will get more CS than any other DGWer up to GW 36 (SOT sun WHM SWA)
    2) Taking a risk on Gabriel and Rojo, they're first choice and enabler.
Also have the best fixture and at worst will play 2 out of 3 - and that's still better S/DGW defenders.
    3) Mahrez is a season keeper. only probably benched on GW37 where I have 11 DGWer
    4) Kane for the next 2, then switching to Martial / Sturridge.
    5) Hoping Everton on GW 35 so I can play 4-3-3 instead of 4-4-2 and not waste a transfer on Antonio->Alli.

    Thoughts?

I know, I was on my wc and just making some teams on a drunk evening and confirmed it. So when I wake up, Mahrez was gone 😀

But anyway, Leicester always seem to win 1-0 while I can see more goals in Spurs games so happy to go with Alli and Simpson though

    -------------------Cech - Elliot-----------------------------
    Darmian - Gabriel - Sakho - Janmaat - Olsson
    ----Mahrez - Antonio - Firmino - Ozil - Yaya----
    -----------Aguero - Sturridge - Lukaka---------------

      Not conviced

Would go with Rojo/Smalling over Darmian
      Bellerin over Gabriel
Simpson over Janmaat since you already have Newcastle and Leicester are strong in the back
      Sanchez over Yaya

I like you Sturridge punt though

I guess I could've picked other words to make that sentence, let's call it a translation error 😀 But ineed, like I just said, it's a terrible thing people are so crazy to blow up the metro. But now it's just going to be like the attacks in Paris with racist comments against the Islam and refugees and I think those people are having a hard time already without the media pointing out 50 times a day that a muslim has done it

Don't get me wrong, it's a terrible thing it happened
But the media is just doing what the terrorist want, causing panic.
After the attacks in Paris, everyone in Belgium was hating on the refugees although they had no involvement in any of this. People even called the police when they saw Naingolan on the streets, thinking he was from IS planning an attack....

Think i've got my DGW team sorted! Keeping Mahrez as he's generally awesome and had him since GW2!

    Here it is...

My only caveat is Newcastle, two strong home ties where i can see goals, might swap one of these out for a WBA defender!

    De Gea / Mignolet
    Bellering / Clyne / Rojo / Janmat / Sagna
    Ozil / Payet / Mahrez / Firmino / Wijn
    Lukaku / Martial / Kun

Is my 5 DGW players enough with 3 FT's in the pocket? Already got Bellerin back for Kompany this week... Thinking I have to sell Aguero or Sanchez to get more DGW player funds in but I''m not sure. Kun looks the most likely to go for me at present for Lukaku and spread the 5.0m??

    Current DGW34 Non-Wildcard Team Sanchez(TC) with 3 FT's but no cash

    Forster/McCarthy
    BELLERIN Wimmer Huth NYOM Cook
    SANCHEZ(TC) OZIL Alli Mahrez King
    AGUERO Vardy Kane

DGW34 Wildcard Team Sanchez (C) - No Aguero

    DDG/ELLIOTT
    BELLERIN SAKHO REID NYOM Simpson
    SANCHEZ(C) OZIL PAYET LINGARD Mahrez

The KDB news makes it a lot easier to bin lukaku.
Was worrying about him getting rested but now losing him for Deeney/Ighalo to fund Yaya>KDB.

15 DGWers with 11 players and a FT the week after. Happy enough with that
