Scout Scribbles – De Bruyne Nets in City Stalemate

Kevin de Bruyne is amongst the goals again as Man City share the spoils with PSG. Roberto Firmino returns to training ahead of Liverpool’s clash with Dortmund, Andre Ayew could be back for Swansea this weekend, whilst Stoke are handed mixed injury news prior to Sunday’s trip to Anfield.

City salvage point in Paris

Manchester City secured a precious 2-2 draw against Paris Saint-Germain in their Champions League quarter-final, affording them a slight advantage heading into the second leg. Manuel Pellegrini fielded a full-strength XI, deploying Kevin De Bruyne in “the hole” behind Sergio Aguero once again. The former Wolfsburg starlet opened the scoring, while Fernandinho bagged a goal and assist. Joe Hart also delivered the goods on his return from injury, saving Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s penalty in the 14th minute.

The Scout Says: With two goals in as many starts since vacating the treatment room, De Bruyne has reaffirmed his status as the Sky Blues’ premier midfield pick ahead of a favourable quartet of ties (WBA, che &new, STO) over the next three Gameweeks. Encouragingly, De Bruyne was afforded 77 minutes last night – as opposed to 56 minutes against Bournemouth on Saturday – which highlights that Pellegrini is quickly allowing him the chance to build up his match sharpness ahead of City’s double. Given that Nicolas Otamendi (6.5) appears to be the only safe starter in the Sky Blues’ back line, the fit-again Hart (5.6) serves as their value source of defensive coverage for a stretch brimming with clean-sheet potential.

Firmino returns to training for Reds

Roberto Firmino played a full part in Liverpool training last night ahead of their Europa League clash against Borussia Dortmund this evening.

The Scout Says: In the event that Firmino is afforded a decent run-out at the Westfalenstadion, some Gameweek 33 wildcarders might be tempted to re-assess their Liverpool attacking coverage. Owing to Firmino’s hamstring issue, Philippe Coutinho (two goals in two) emerged as the prime route into the Reds’ squad – indeed, he currently ranks third among all players for “transfers in” (60,000) this Gameweek. However, the former boasts a superior key-pass frequency (one every 41 minutes to 49 minute) shot accuracy (40% compared to 28%) and shot-conversion rate (17% to 8%) than his Brazilian teammate, illustrating his greater efficiency in the final third. Ultimately, both men represent strong selections in light of Liverpool’s double Gameweeks 34 (bou &EVE) and 37 (WAT & CHE) and absence of a blank, which hands them a plum home clash with Newcastle in Gameweek 35.

Ayew close to Swans comeback

Having returned to full training following an ankle injury, Andre Ayew looks in line to be fit for Chelsea’s visit on Saturday.

The Scout Says: Although he’s expected to immediately return to Francesco Guidolin’s starting XI, Ayew will struggle to claim any level of Fantasy interest over the run-in. The Swans’ brutal run-in (CHE, new, lei, LIV, whu, MCI) and lack of a double Gameweek encourages us to disregard their Fantasy prospects and turn to those with doubles instead. That being said, Gylfi Sigurdsson’s 9% ownership might feel inclined to retain the form midfielder (eight goals in 13) until Swansea face off against Newcastle’s obliging defence in Gameweek 34.

Mixed news for Potters

Stoke City assistant manager Mark Bowen confirmed that Ryan Shawcross and Xherdan Shaqiri could be passed fit for their trip to Liverpool on Sunday:

“From Ryan’s point of view going into the weekend … we are now on Wednesday, the players have a day’s rest tomorrow and we’ll see how he is on Friday with one eye to the game at Liverpool. Shaq has trained again this week so we’re delighted with that. He seems to have come through ok and I definitely think with him, if he gets no reaction, he’ll be in the frame to start against Liverpool.”

Bowen also revealed that Geoff Cameron sat out training due to illness and Glenn Whelan is struggling with back spasms:

“Glenn hasn’t trained for the last two days. He came out of the game on Saturday and came in on Monday full in spasm with his back. I’m not a physiotherapist but I think at this stage, it’s one of those, it could settle down very quickly but if it carries on the way it is he is a major doubt for the weekend.”

The Scout Says: In appreciation of the Potters’ tough upcoming trio of match-ups (liv, TOT, mci) and lack of a double Gameweek, their Fantasy assets have disappeared off our radar. Nonetheless, Shawcross’ return to action could tighten up a defence that managed just one clean sheet in the eight fixtures he’s missed this year. On that topic, Stoke have surrendered just five goals in the seven home fixtures that their captain has started, which is food for thought for Harry Kane and Dele Alli before Spurs’ trip to the Britannia Stadium in Gameweek 34.

To those of you whom have KDB and planning to BB GW 34...

Is the value of the BB chip not derived from having 15 strong players, as opposed to sacrificing a couple of positions?

Of the RMT's I have seen, those with KDB have poor defences. Whilst CS this season have been hard to obtain, ARS and MUN have some terrific fixtures, so surely doubling up on their defences is wise?

I guess what I am trying to articulate is that, surely having two strong CS candidates ahead of KDB will yield more points?

Yep I think having 15 strong players outweighs getting a strict big hitter/cheapy divided team. I'm sacrificing Aguero to do that as KDB is cheaper and has the same PPG and looks in better form over the last couple of games. Aguero was anonymous last night.

      1. ArseneWanger
        • 8 Years

He was, but Aguero is the type of player that can explode any game and score a hatrick or even more, that's why if he's fit he's in my team regardless of form and fixtures.

    It's come down to this

    Sanchez and Martial from now
Ozil/KDB and Kane for GW33, Martial for 34 and back to Kane in 35.

Basically what I'm asking is, is Sanchez worth more than having Ozil or KDB

    The issue of returning from a hamstring vs ankle injury;
In Kdbs case ,(ankle) he is pretty much back to 100% injury wise right? Having his minutes managed, more due to lack of match involvement?
In Firminos case, (hammy) a more restricted approach to his minutes on the field, is the the most common occurrence? Fear of reflaming the injury etc

I'm on to something, or off target?

    1. Zizoulicious
      • 8 Years
      8 years, 1 month ago

      Thought KdB was knee?

I think muscle injury is more likely to relapse, but both will limit fitness and minutes the same way

      1. Sjaugen
        • 8 Years
        8 years, 1 month ago

Maybe, I didn't research the issue at all.
I'm more hinting towards that he will start all the games going forward, as it's not a muscle injury (which you also point out)

          • 8 Years

Do you have another Arsenal def besides Gabriel?

      If so, A

If not, still A but be slightly worried about Mert getting a game.

    De Gea, Robles
    Smalling, Bellerin, Jagielka, Sakho, Delaney
    Sanchez, Ozil, KDB, Coutinho, Payet
    Lukaku, Mitrovic, Rashford

Big 5 mid an option? Not sold on Jags or Delaney as I would have preferred Coleman and Dann but as their defences aren't great I guess it is a compromise. Rashford a risk, but a cheap one at that, and can change to Defoe for the next double gameweek.

I really don't like KdB at the moment, I think he's a waste of money if it means you have to have such weak atrikers

Same PPG as Kun over the season for less money, seems more in form. Aguero seems a default option because of the lack of strikers but I'm tending towards going cheap and improving everywhere else in the team rather than spunking 13m.

Guess it's just a matter of taste, but dropping DGW Agüero is asking for trouble IMO

I quite like that. Aguero certainly shouldn't be an untouchable.

I'd want Martial in for Rashford though, if you can find a way.

Would hugely appreciate some feedback on the below WC:

    Cech / Robles
    Bellarin / Darmian / Reid / Sahko / Delaney
    Ozil/ Coutinho / Payet / Lingard / Lanzini
    Aguero / Lukaku / Kane

+ Aggressive front 3 (I'm enjoying Kane being a differential - it's rare you can say that about an inform striker going for the golden boot/league title)

    - No KDB
    - Some rotation risk as the back

My current WC team - any suggestions?
(Can field a full team in GW35)

    Robles Mignolet
Dann Smalling Bellerin Fuchs (already had him) Sakho
Coutinho(or Firminho) Sanchez Payet Iwobi Barkley (or other)
    Aguero Lukaku Mitrovic
    0.6m

    * Not liking the Darlow GW35 game away to Liverpool
    * Martial or DDG will require a hit in GW35 to field a full team
    * not sold on Barkley
    * will probably go with Firminho if fit

      • 8 Years

Like it. Barkley -> someone who plays gw35 solves your hit problem

I assume you'll be playing Migs in 35, so Darlow's fixture doesnt matter.
Mitro and the keepers are fine.
Barkley is as good as punt as any with his double double.
Cout and Firm is a coin flip

Nice team, doesn't need any more work

I don't have Darlow in this draft due to the fixture in GW35.

I have 9.7 to fill the 2 empty spots, ideally want one with a game in GW35 but a hit for the right player, or playing with 10 wouldn't be the worst thing I guess
    Robles, Darlow
    Gabriel, Bellerin, Smalling, Sakho, ______
    Coutinho, Firmino, Sanchez, Payet, _______
    Kun, Lukaku, Martial

Mitro over Martial frees up cash but can't ignore those Martial fixtures

    a) Lanzini with Simpson + cash
    b) Lanzini with Kirchoff + cash and a floating FT
    c) Lanzini and Janmaat (double Newcastle defence)
    d) Lanzini with Delaney/Klose and a hit/10 players in 35
    e) Lennon/Antonio/Townsend with Simpson

At the moment you have no keeper playing in GW35, so both of the players yet to be brought in have to play in GW35 or change a keeper.

    Kun, Lukaku, Kane

Three spot open. Which one is better option?

    A) Mignolet, Coleman, Mahrez
    B) Darlow, Jagielka, Firmino

    Currently I have A.

I have Mahrez atm, but I can see his points being low as the emphasis is on the cleansheet.
I think if Leicester give away a goal early it might mean his point haul will be a bit higher.
So, I am thinking of trading him out.

I posted this two hours ago in an old article:

Yesterday I did a poll on 13 DGWplayers, asking the following:

How nailed on are the following until the end of the season or at least GW37 on a scale from 1-5 where 5 is the highest possible nailed on-nes as in Aguero, Ozil, Sanchez...(or use your own definition of nailed on) ---

--- I know have the results from 8 voters (9 when it came to Lanzini...thx Doos
