Scout Notes

Scout Scribbles – De Bruyne Nets in City Stalemate

Kevin de Bruyne is amongst the goals again as Man City share the spoils with PSG. Roberto Firmino returns to training ahead of Liverpool’s clash with Dortmund, Andre Ayew could be back for Swansea this weekend, whilst Stoke are handed mixed injury news prior to Sunday’s trip to Anfield.

City salvage point in Paris

Manchester City secured a precious 2-2 draw against Paris Saint-Germain in their Champions League quarter-final, affording them a slight advantage heading into the second leg. Manuel Pellegrini fielded a full-strength XI, deploying Kevin De Bruyne in “the hole” behind Sergio Aguero once again. The former Wolfsburg starlet opened the scoring, while Fernandinho bagged a goal and assist. Joe Hart also delivered the goods on his return from injury, saving Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s penalty in the 14th minute.

The Scout Says: With two goals in as many starts since vacating the treatment room, De Bruyne has reaffirmed his status as the Sky Blues’ premier midfield pick ahead of a favourable quartet of ties (WBA, che &new, STO) over the next three Gameweeks. Encouragingly, De Bruyne was afforded 77 minutes last night – as opposed to 56 minutes against Bournemouth on Saturday – which highlights that Pellegrini is quickly allowing him the chance to build up his match sharpness ahead of City’s double. Given that Nicolas Otamendi (6.5) appears to be the only safe starter in the Sky Blues’ back line, the fit-again Hart (5.6) serves as their value source of defensive coverage for a stretch brimming with clean-sheet potential.

Firmino returns to training for Reds

Roberto Firmino played a full part in Liverpool training last night ahead of their Europa League clash against Borussia Dortmund this evening.

The Scout Says: In the event that Firmino is afforded a decent run-out at the Westfalenstadion, some Gameweek 33 wildcarders might be tempted to re-assess their Liverpool attacking coverage. Owing to Firmino’s hamstring issue, Philippe Coutinho (two goals in two) emerged as the prime route into the Reds’ squad – indeed, he currently ranks third among all players for “transfers in” (60,000) this Gameweek. However, the former boasts a superior key-pass frequency (one every 41 minutes to 49 minute) shot accuracy (40% compared to 28%) and shot-conversion rate (17% to 8%) than his Brazilian teammate, illustrating his greater efficiency in the final third. Ultimately, both men represent strong selections in light of Liverpool’s double Gameweeks 34 (bou &EVE) and 37 (WAT & CHE) and absence of a blank, which hands them a plum home clash with Newcastle in Gameweek 35.

Ayew close to Swans comeback

Having returned to full training following an ankle injury, Andre Ayew looks in line to be fit for Chelsea’s visit on Saturday.

The Scout Says: Although he’s expected to immediately return to Francesco Guidolin’s starting XI, Ayew will struggle to claim any level of Fantasy interest over the run-in. The Swans’ brutal run-in (CHE, new, lei, LIV, whu, MCI) and lack of a double Gameweek encourages us to disregard their Fantasy prospects and turn to those with doubles instead. That being said, Gylfi Sigurdsson’s 9% ownership might feel inclined to retain the form midfielder (eight goals in 13) until Swansea face off against Newcastle’s obliging defence in Gameweek 34.

Mixed news for Potters

Stoke City assistant manager Mark Bowen confirmed that Ryan Shawcross and Xherdan Shaqiri could be passed fit for their trip to Liverpool on Sunday:

“From Ryan’s point of view going into the weekend … we are now on Wednesday, the players have a day’s rest tomorrow and we’ll see how he is on Friday with one eye to the game at Liverpool. Shaq has trained again this week so we’re delighted with that. He seems to have come through ok and I definitely think with him, if he gets no reaction, he’ll be in the frame to start against Liverpool.”

Bowen also revealed that Geoff Cameron sat out training due to illness and Glenn Whelan is struggling with back spasms:

“Glenn hasn’t trained for the last two days. He came out of the game on Saturday and came in on Monday full in spasm with his back. I’m not a physiotherapist but I think at this stage, it’s one of those, it could settle down very quickly but if it carries on the way it is he is a major doubt for the weekend.”

The Scout Says: In appreciation of the Potters’ tough upcoming trio of match-ups (liv, TOT, mci) and lack of a double Gameweek, their Fantasy assets have disappeared off our radar. Nonetheless, Shawcross’ return to action could tighten up a defence that managed just one clean sheet in the eight fixtures he’s missed this year. On that topic, Stoke have surrendered just five goals in the seven home fixtures that their captain has started, which is food for thought for Harry Kane and Dele Alli before Spurs’ trip to the Britannia Stadium in Gameweek 34.

Hi Guys, very few times I request for comments, but will appreciate if you could indicate where improvements can be made as cannot field 11 on GW35. On a WC for GW33.

    Mignolet/Robles
    Darmian/Gabriel/Bellerin/Jags/Simpson
    Sanchez/Coutinho/Mahrez/Lanzini/Payet
    Martial/Kun/Lukaku

    Thanks in advance

Damian concerns me and given EVR's lack of cs, I wouldn't bother with Jags.

Personally i wouldnt double up on Eve defense, would ship Jags to Clyne and drop Migs to Darlow. Gives a little more funds to use elsewhere as well

            You're correct, missed that.
            What about this new bunch?

            Mannone/Darlow
            Sakho/Gabriel/Bellerin/Simpson/Walker
            KDB/Sanchez/Coutinho/Mahrez/Lanzini
            Aguero/Lukaku/Martial

Quite a few missing in 35. All 6 outfield players have a double in 37 too, so it's tough to decide on who is dropped

First time I've been reasonably happy with the WC 33 team:

    Mings/Robles
    Bell, Gabs, Dann, Simpson, Lovren
    Coutinho, Mahrez, Lennon, Sanchez, Payet
    Lukaku, Kun and Martian.

Probably as good as you are going to get. Dann will be Smalling in 34.

I would drop Lovren and Dann. Get Delaney and whoever else just not a double LIV defense. Upgrade Lennon with funds if you want?

Well Lennon has 45 points in last 7 games. He is a better pick than Barclay and much cheaper.
Dann will become Smalling in 34. Dann is CPL's top scorer. Yes, double LIV defence is not ideal but then who else is there? They have the best fixtures. I was thinking Janmaat (and still am). My concern with two from the LIV defence is that Firmino might be needed.

Thats why i wouldnt go with double Liv defense.

Issue with Lennon is that his shot conversion is absolutely unreal for those goals. Thats why i think its not sustainable. (que lei sustainability debate)
I am debating if i want any of the EVE mids to be fair. It all depends on if i am keeping Mahrez or not..
Dann is too expensive for what he offers in dgw. Delaney same threat almost for quite a lot of cash less. 3 goals less granted, but 2 assists more. I like that value.

I did have Delboy but had the cash for Dann. The EVR mids are a minefield, granted, but Lennon appears the best of the lot at present and offers good value. EVR's better away form appeals too.

Would just get Smalling now, otherwise you'll only have 9 players for 35 with 1 FT, rather than 2. Personally think that's more lucrative than a CPL defender

Oh lord that takes me back - haven't listened to A Maximum High for 15 years probably but I used to love that album!

That whole mix is sparking nostalgia - Longpigs, Sleeper, Mansun, etc. The music I listened to most in my formative years. It's also the time when Newcastle had players like Shearer, Ferdinand, Beardsley, Ginola, Asprilla, Lee, Albert, etc.

            I've gone all sad 🙁

The Sun Is Often Out was a great album.

For some reason I always think of Geneva (the band) when I think of the Longpigs. Weird association in my head. I used to love Tranquilizer by Geneva - lush track. Whilst we're on vaguely medical song titles I'll also throw Tourniquet by Headswim into the conversation.

I love that album, was listening to it just yesterday.

This is a great theme, this should be a hot topic.

Haha, it was a glorious heady time for me - I remember going to the Newcastle Riverside a fair few times which was a dive by most standards but we loved it. Saw Lush, Space, Rocket From The Crypt, Mansun, etc. all for very little money and in a tiny, packed venue. Simpler times 🙂

One of my favourites from that era is the forgotten genius Mick Head (helped by him being a scouser).

We had Space, Supergrass, Stereophonics and even Blur! Lovelife is a fantastic album but I never saw Lush unfortunately. The days when you could go to a gig and get pissed for about £15! God I'm old 😆

Go with Dann this GW then upgrade to Smalling for 34 or just go with Smalling now?

Means taking a hit for 11 in 35

Personally I'm in favour of the hit - you have to expect Dann will score you at least 4 pts in GW33, whereas Smalling probably won't , therefore the hit pays for itself (twisted logic)

    B. KDB, Darmian & Simpson (0.4 ITB)

    Thoughts on Barkley?

    Pros
    - two consecutive games
    - 6th ranked fantasy midfielder
    - relatively cheap
    - four double figure returns
    - nailed on

    Cons
    - two away games
    - 9 returns in 32 (28% return rate)
    - no goals/assists in last 5

Away games is a big plus for Everton. Having said that I still don't like him as an option, returns in one game in 2016

I think I may take him, don't want to carry palace players in to 34, so would be wasting a transfer on them.

Will play further forward with Barry too.

    Smalling - Bellerin - Simpson - Sakho - ?
    Sanchez - Payet - Coutinho - Lennon - ?
    ----------Aguero - Lukaku - Martial

    Got 9.5, thinking...

    A. Reid and Iwobi
    or
    B. Gabriel and Lanzini

Am I the only one who cannot see KDB starting this gw? 3 games in 6 days seems risky considering he's just come back from a spell out. Why risk him against Wba when they have potentially one of the biggest matches in their history?

KDB wildcarders = "no chance, they need to finish 4th and he will start and be subbed off when City are 2-0 up"

Guys, I'm there! WC team finalised. Please, please, please can I get a few thoughts on the last piece of the puzzle, and then I'm done.

    Front 8:

    SANCHEZ ~ KDB ~ COUTINHO ~ MILNER ~ LANZINI
    AGUERO ~ LUKAKU ~ MARTIAL

    A.) ROBLES / CECH**
    SMALLING/DELANEY/GABRIEL/SAKHO**\SIMPSON

    B.) ROBLES / MIGNOLET**
    SMALLING/DELANEY/GABRIEL/BELLERIN**/SIMPSON

    For GW35

    With A.) SMALLING--> AZPI & LUKAKU --> KANE

With B.) SMALLING --> AZPI & less preferable move than Luk --> Kane

    So A.) or B.) ???????????? Thanks guys

It's not really a problem. Having an extra player in GW34 but one less in GW35 means little in the general scheme of things.

Mine nearly did. I was going to go with Lanzini over Alli, but I didn't want to plan for an extra transfer. Bit of a mistake given he scored at the weekend, but will balance out if Alli does well GW35... hopefully.

Sounds about right, if not more on the basis that if you're in the top 1k you know what you're doing and will have had the foresight to keep them.
