Scout Notes – Gameweek 34 – Wednesday

Daniel Sturridge and Philippe Coutinho are amongst the goals as Liverpool put four past Everton in a one-sided derby at Anfield. Andy Carroll nets again as West Ham sweep aside Watford at Upton Park, whilst Matteo Darmian bags a goal and assist in United’s home win over Palace.

Reds run riot

Jurgen Klopp welcomed back his starters for the Merseyside derby but opted to field Divock Origi ahead of Daniel Sturridge at the lone-striker berth. The former opened the scoring (his third goal in three) at the 43-minute mark but would later leave the pitch on a stretcher with an ankle injury. Post-match, Klopp conceded that the Belgium international has twisted his ankle and is set to undergo scans to assess any further damage.

Sturridge replaced Origi and found himself on the scoresheet seven minutes later, notching his fourth goal in five appearances. Should Origi face a stint on the sidelines, the England international could be in the driving seat to lead the line over the run-in, though with the Europa League clashes against Villarreal also to factor in, Klopp could also utilise Roberto Firmino as a false nine as he continues to manage Sturridge’s minutes.

Philippe Coutinho netted his third goal in as many starts, whilst James Milner also kept his tally ticking over with his second brace of assists in three outings. With the weekend home match against Newcastle taking place five days before the first leg against Villarreal, though, there’d be no surprise if Klopp made several alterations to his team sheet, as evidenced by his first XI at Bournemouth on Sunday.

Rounding off Liverpool’s Fantasy output, Mamadou Sakho bagged his first league goal of the season to deliver a 15-point double Gameweek 34 haul, while Lucas Leiva and Joe Allen grabbed assists.

Funes Mori dismissed for sorry Toffees

Everton endured a torrid evening at Anfield, mustering just three attempts and zero shots on target as they stretched out their winless run to seven matches.

To compound matters, Ramiro Funes Mori received a straight red in the 50th minute for a reckless challenge on Origi, ruling him out of the Toffees’ FA Cup semi-final against Manchester United and their next two league encounters (BOU, lei). With Seamus Coleman and Phil Jagielka both injured, Roberto Martinez’ men look decimated in defence right now.

An exodus is on the cards for Romelu Lukaku owners following the Belgian’s fifth consecutive blank. Lukaku managed a pitiful six attempts in his previous four starts and is fronting an attack that’s netted only two goals in six fixtures, underlining the magnitude of Everton’s current malaise. Ally this with the Toffees’ poor defensive form (one clean sheet in nine) and it’s difficult to justify investment prior to their double Gameweek 37 (lei & sun).

Carroll notches another in Hammers win

West Ham United extended their unbeaten streak to nine matches with a 3-1 home win over Watford.

Courtesy of two goals from the penalty spot, Mark Noble posted his highest score (16 points) of the campaign. Andy Carroll spearheaded the Irons’ attack and went on to notch for the third successive league match. The Hammers striker now boasts six goals in five outings, placing him on many managers’ shopping lists ahead of West Ham’s double Gameweek 37 (SWA, MUN). Considering that Diafra Sakho had to settle for a wing role on his return to action, Carroll looks set to retain his starting berth beyond a blank next Gameweek.

Dimitri Payet, Cheikhou Kouyate and Michail Antonio grabbed the assists. The former somewhat fell short of expectations with a six-point haul over the double, while the latter continues to deliver attacking returns (two assists in three) despite being deployed at right-back.

Prodl bags Hornets’ consolation

In the wake of defeat at the Boleyn Ground, Watford lay claim to just one victory in their last eight outings.

In an obvious ploy to preserve the fitness of his first-teamers before the Hornets’ FA Cup semi-final this Sunday, Quique Sanchez Flores named seven changes for their trip to Upton Park. The likes of Odion Ighalo was afforded a rest, whilst Troy Deeney was named amongst the subs only to emerge from the bench and miss a spot-kick.

Handed a third start in four, Sebastian Prodl (Steven Berghuis assist) starved the hosts of a clean sheet with his maiden goal of the campaign.

Darmian the unlikely United hero

Manchester United renewed their hunt for a top-four berth with a 2-0 win over Crystal Palace at Old Trafford.

Matteo Darmian delighted 13,000 managers that drafted him in prior to Gameweek 34, notching a goal and assist as part of a 17-point showing. The Italian full-back profited from the Red Devils’ fourth clean sheet in five outings, yet the absence of Marcos Rojo and Timothy Fosu-Mensah reaffirmed the fact that David Gea and Chris Smalling represent the only safe routes into their defence. In saying that, it’s worth noting that Antonio Valencia also benefitted over the pair of fixtures, with a goal and two clean sheets earning him 20 points – only Sergio Aguero (26 points) has bettered that score amongst outfield players in the Gameweek ahead of tonight’s final fixture at the Emirates.

Anthony Martial was re-inserted into the starting XI as Louis van Gaal also found room for Wayne Rooney and Marcus Rashford in a 4-3-3 set-up. Ultimately, Martial – who’s now scored a solitary goal in seven appearances – proved to be a misstep for over 200,000 managers that backed him to capitalise on Man United’s favourable pair of home match-ups.

    For GW35

    Coutinho > Alli (10 GW35 players)
    Lanzini > Alli (11 GW35 players)
Payet > Alli (11 GW35 players, Coutinho a risk though)

    Currently on Lanzini > Alli
May do a sideways move of Coutinho > Milner to free up funds at a later date

I'd be worried of putting any Liverpool player in as Klopp could do literally anything. I'd do Coutinho to Alli i think, gives extra funds for later transfers (enabler for me to get Kane for example)

Yeah I do. 5 days between the Newcastle fixture and the UEL semi vs. only 3 days between Bournemouth and the UEL quarter so I think it's a bit of a different scenario. I'd think/hope Coutinho will play at least a bit to retain match fitness.

Lanzini can be easily bought back and having Alli in seems to be a good strategy for now.

Points seem to be spread across the Hammers midfield. Fortunately they score lots of goals so still get decent returns.

              Midfielders are tough for 37!!

May keep Ozil and Alli, because of the fixtures GW38. Payet is certain, maybe Mata because of his stats this week, may punt on Hazard.

Liverpool attackers are really troublesome. I'd like a midfielder, but I'm not sure who would play both... Firmino may be too risky.

Tough one - Kane vs. Kun (as has become the usual) for me:

Kane is top of my list at the moment because Spurs are on form in terms of team comparisons, though obviously Kun and Kane are fairly equal in terms of individual form.

Stoke are seemingly on holiday, so Kun could be a great option to be fair. But I hate captaining the early kick off, which City's is.

Think Kane vs. WBA is probably the better option - will see how engaged WBA seem tonight vs. us

Surely he still isn't nailed? Klopp has used Firmino as a false 9 to great effect before, he could do so again. Particularly as Firmino hasn't played more than about 70 minutes in any of Pool's last 3

No WC left - Lukaku and Martial out for Kane and... [-4]

    A. Long for GW35 and Defoe for GW36+... (wasting a T next GW)
    B. Defoe from now.

First one to 5 wins - 2-2 so far.. (no money for Pelle)

Seriously considering a -8 to get Kane in (with Alli and Walker) as can't afford Kane otherwise. Is taking a big hit ever a good solution? Most i've taken before is -4, and that is only rarely.

It can help, if they give you points in return. For example, this week I did Robles(5)+Barkley(2)-->DDG(12)+Alli(15) for a -4. I got an extra 16 points 🙂

    Darlow (robles)

Is anyone else struggling to see any decent DGW37 attacking players?

Watford - rubbish. Norwich - rubbish. Chelsea - rubbish. Liverpool - rotation nightmare. Man Utd - limited, no decent midfielders and ? over their attack. Everton - worse than rubbish.

Which leaves Sunderland and West Ham. Hmm.

Sturridge won't start against Newcastle imo.

He will be wrapped in cotton wool now that Origi is injured.

I expect more of a mixed bag than against Bournemouth, because of Newcastle's league position. Then I expect that Liverpool will rotate fully for GW 36 again.

Firmino through the middle against Newcastle I expect.

Just a Wakey thought. I posted a couple of weeks ago that I don't think things are all they should be between Klopp and Sturridge....the last few team sheets just add fuel to my fire.

Does anybody else now think Klopp will be happy to see the back of him if he can find another talented goal scorer without the injury baggage?....He's not the only player in the world who can score goals.

He seems quite keen on pushing Origi. I don't know much about Klopp but football history is littered with managers who hold no patience for injury prone players. He could well be quite happy for Origi to steal Sturridge's game time. I would be if I were Klopp.

          Agreed.

          Similar players out there though..

I mean, if Madrid ever decide that they'd prefer a different spearhead, Benzema becomes available.. Higuain still knocking about for the right price in Italy, Lacazette in France.. There are a few decent striking options about without the injury prone headache.

Top strikers are the most in demand and valuable assets out there. A club with no CL is not much of a draw.
Clop managed Dortmund and lost all his best players whilst there.

Yep. My thoughts exactly. I don't know much about Klopp, but I do know Sturridge would have driven plenty of managers mad over the years...talented or nor,

The point is for how long....Nobody doubts his talent but in the end it has to be a talent that lasts more than a few weeks at a time. Klopp's job is to win games and try to lift trophies. He relies on his players for both quality and quantity if starts.

Seems to me like he's pushing Origi for that spot or else he'd be starting Sturridge more.
