Captain Sensible – Gameweek 37

Our usual Friday members article comes around now as we analyse the captaincy conundrum ahead of the final double Gameweek of 2016/17. We take a delve into the Opta data for the main contenders and assess the team statistics and Rate My Team’s reckoning, before rounding off with our opinion on the current poll standings in light of the data analysis, including our view on differential captains.

The Captain Poll

Double Gameweek 37 understandably dominates our selection, with nine of the top ten in the Captain Poll facing a couple of fixtures.

With a goal or assist in seven of his last ten, Dimitri Payet boasts a healthy 34% of the votes cast. The popular Frenchman has a higher ownership (33%) than any double Gameweek player ahead of home clashes against Swansea (one away clean sheet all season) and a United defence with two shut-outs in their last 11 road trips.

Eden Hazard just edges Andy Carroll in the tussle for second position by 13% to 12%. The Chelsea winger’s three goals and six bonus points in two outings since returning from injury has piqued our interest ahead of trips to Sunderland and Liverpool.

Finally free from his injury worries, the 6.5-priced Carroll offers a tempting route into an attack that’s scored at least twice in each of their previous seven. The big Geordie has chipped in with six goals and an assist in the Hammers’ last six fixtures and looks a viable double-up option along with Payet.

United’s Anthony Martial is backed by 8% to do the business away to Norwich and West Ham. The Frenchman has notched five times in ten outings across all competitions and faces a couple of unconvincing defences – the Canaries have one clean sheet in their previous at Carrow Road, whilst the Hammers’ 3-0 win at West Brom earned them a first shut-out in seven.

Just 7% are willing to back 14-goal Jermain Defoe as Sunderland host Chelsea and Everton. Big Sam will take solace in their visitors’ defensive data as he looks to secure survival – Guus Hiddink’s side have one clean sheet in 11, whilst the Toffees’ backline has been breached in all but one of their previous ten.

Five goals and an assist in seven highlights Daniel Sturridge’s form yet with Jurgen Klopp’s team sheets proving a huge source of frustration, just 5% are willing to roll the dice for Liverpool’s home matches against Watford (one clean sheet in nine road trips) and Chelsea. After playing virtually every minute against Villarreal last night, though, there are still concerns over his minutes in light of the Reds’ progress to the Europa League final.

Further down, the likes of Robbie Brady, Diego Costa and Mark Noble are amongst a host of differentials hovering around the 2% mark.

Are the current rankings backed by the underlying statistics, though?

We kick off by breaking down the player and team data for their respective last four matches in order to shed a little more light on the situation.

Hi Guys, With a BB and for a -8 hit -

    -----------DDG (Mccarthy)----------------
    Fuchs Kolarov Bellerin Alderweild (Oxford)
    Sanchez Firmino Mahrez (Drinkwater, Alli)
    ----------Aguero Carroll Defoe-------------

    a) Alli+Firminho+Kolarov > Payet+Fabregas/Willian+ Smalling/ PVA
    b) Alli+Firminho+Kolarov > Payet+Hazard+Morgan/Simpson/Cathcart

Need to catch up with a rival who's leading by only 4 points! His team -

    Thanks a lot!

Don't really get it. You are bench boosting with Oxford, McCarthy and Drinkwater? If you were to BB this week get the ones that are guaranteed not to start out. Alli, Drinkwater, Oxford, McCarthy, Kolarov. If not benchboosting, get just Kolarov and Alli out.

But removing all of those players would get me a - 20 ! Isn't that dangerous, even with BB?

How does Kane, Delaney, Fosu-M > Carroll, Smalling, Cress sound?

Gives me 9 doublers + Kun and Alexis

        ROBLES
        SMALLING, CRESS, PVA
        PAYET, HAZ, COUT, Alexis
        Aguero, CARROLL, DEENEY

(-8), Triple (c) either Carroll or Payet.

he's dangerous from free kicks. If he starts wide again his fpl potential is poor

also carroll starting seems to have hurt his potential for pts

Plus his crosses from wide will be gobbled up by Carroll so I'd rather have the goal scorer than the provider.

Right this is a bit of a long read so I apologise in advance im ruling myself out of my ML for 1st I'm behind 2nd & 3rd by 82 & 74 pts (still get money back for those places) is it impossible now to catch up to either, 2nd has used all thier chips while 3rd has thier TC chip left, i have my TC chip left is this the best time to use it for the DGW or should i save it for Sanchez GW38 vs Villa? Also if you are chasing like I am would you do Aguero > Costa or Defoe? Many thanks to people's suggestions & advice on here again.

I'm in almost the same situation, trailing in my ML by 31,69,91 and 103 points (4th,3rd,2nd and 1st places)

What I just did was writing their teams on a piece of paper, comparing our teams, checking their chips, DGW players etc
Without it it's hard to recommend you any transfers, yours Aguero-->Costa/Defoe move seems reasonable but what if they do the same? Check differentials in your team, maybe risk with a bit overlooked guys like Lukaku, Deeney, Noble, Rooney...
You(we) don't have anything to lose...and I feel that TC should be used on explosive DGW player like Sanchez/Kun in GW34

      1. Lecky Legs FC
        • 8 Years

Good idea jotting and comparing each squad, heres how my squad looks right now

        Gomes
        PVA-Bellerin-Daniels
        Mahrez-Sanchez-Coutinho-Payet
        Carroll(TC)-Aguero-Deeney

        Subs:Lamela,Gabriel,Huth,Hennessy

Yeah I kicked myself for not TC on Aguero only had him as a normal captain.I've done no hit yet but I'm tempted to do just a -4 for Aguero > Costa or Lamela > Noble as a differential and I personally can't see 2nd or 3rd bringing them in but will analyse both teams

Chelsea and Sunderland might be the safer plays for TC.

120? Milner never gets subbed on.

Anyone got a bench full of Arsenal players this week cos they're playing Man City away?

I'm on bench boost and don't feel it's strong enough to use it this week.

Am I better holding and using bench boost GW38?

Current team - still got 1 free transfer to use:

    Robles
    Cresswell PVA Fosu-Mensah
    Payet Milner Sanchez Lanzini
    Aguero Kane Rashford

    Darlow Ozil Bellerin Sakho

Actually Arsenal's last 6 games away to city are 3 wins, 1 draw, 2 losses so it's not so bad.
City is really poor with matches with top four this season, it can go either way

Bringing DDG in (-4) for Mignolet the right call? I've got Hennessey as back up as there's no guarantees he's going to play either as Pardew has said he wants to give Speroni games to break the record.

#1 GW37: Mignolet (WAT,CHE) - I think there's probably an 80% chance he's benched for the Watford game. Hennessey (STK) probably doesn't look any better. I think given the slim chance Mignolet plays both games he's worth about 5 points on average.
GW38: Mignolet (wba) or Hennessey (SOU). They could both easily be benched here too. I think it's only worth around 2.5points on average.

    #2: GW37: DDG (nor, whu) - maybe 7.5points on average? GW38 (BOU) - perhaps 4.5points?

I guess we are looking at a pretty fine margin. Am I missing anything? Chance DDG gets rested?
