Scout Notes

Scout Scribbles – Martial Concern for Van Gaal

Anthony Martial remains a major doubt for United’s trip to West Ham this evening. The Hammers, meanwhile, have no new injury concerns for their final match at Upton Park. Lamine Kone is passed fit for Sunderland’s vital home match with Everton, whilst Lukasz Fabianski will be rested for Swansea’s match with City on Sunday.

Martial unlikely to feature at Upton Park

Louis van Gaal has conceded that Anthony Martial – who suffered a hamstring injury in the warm-up at Carrow Road – remains a major doubt for this evening’s trip to West Ham. When quizzed on the player’s availability, the United boss went on to say:

“I cannot say because we have to wait. If his muscles are still tight I don’t take any risks because he is a very important player. We don’t want a rupture and that is very important for us.”

The Scout Says: Martial’s inability to feature against the Hammers would be a real blow for the 120,000 Fantasy managers that recruited the Red Devils’ form marksman for their double Gameweek. Owing to the Frenchman’s likely absence, Marcus Rashford – having been rested against Norwich City – should reclaim the lone-striker berth against a defence with a single clean sheet in eight, causing Wayne Rooney to drop back into midfield as Van Gaal’s side go in search of a win that would take them above City into fourth. Should Martial prove his fitness in time for the weekend, though, his owners might be tempted to hold if the Red Devils need a victory to seal a Champions League berth for next season. The Frenchman has scored or assisted in five of his last seven starts at Old Trafford and hosts a Bournemouth defence that ranks top for big chances conceded in away ties (41).

Fabianski set for weekend rest

Lukasz Fabianski revealed that he’s accepted Francesco Guidolin’s offer to rest before the Euros and will sit out Swansea City’s home encounter against Manchester City this weekend:

“I was asked if I wanted to play (at West Ham) or not, but I had trained all week so I said I did. It was not really about staying sharp ahead of the Euros – West Ham is a great stadium and I just wanted to play. I will go away now and have a break. Other players wanted a rest (before West Ham), but I wanted to wait. I will go away now and then prepare for the summer.”

The Scout Says: In spite of the no-shows from Gylfi Sigurdsson, Ashley Williams and Neil Taylor at the Boleyn Ground, the Swans still managed to upset the odds and beat West Ham in a 4-1 victory. Nonetheless, investors in the likes of Kevin De Bruyne (two goals in five) and Sergio Aguero (eight goals in six) will be encouraged by the prospect of the big-hitting duo testing stand-in shot-stopper Kristoffer Nordfeldt on his Premier League debut this coming Sunday. Indeed, should United fail to beat West Ham tonight, it would leave City in pole position to clinch fourth and give them everything to play for in Manuel Pellegrini’s final match in charge.

Kone passed fit for Toffees showdown

In yesterday’s press conference, Sam Allardyce confirmed that Lamine Kone has recovered from the minor thigh issue he picked up during Sunderland’s 3-2 win over Chelsea.

The Scout Says: Having started all of the Black Cats’ league fixtures since arriving in the January transfer window, Kone has proved vital to the Black Cats’ survival bid. With a win against Everton on Wednesday set to seal their safety, the Wearsiders (three clean sheets in six) will feel quietly confident about their chances of nullifying a blunted Toffees who have netted a paltry two goals in their last five road outings. Whilst Kone has brought stability, Patrick van Aanholt remains the prime route into the Wearsiders’ rearguard before a trip to Watford – the raiding left-back bagged an assist against Chelsea on Saturday and ranks joint-third among defenders for attempts (six) in his last quartet of starts.

No new injuries for Hammers

Slaven Bilic reported no fresh injury concerns following their heavy defeat to the Swans, meaning that Adrian (calf strain) is the only Irons player consigned to the treatment room:

“We had regeneration training on Sunday and some of them were not out there, but they should all be OK for Tuesday night. Of course we still have one training left between now and the game, but there is nothing major to report and all that.”

The Scout Says: Although – bar a miracle – West Ham are no longer in the discussion for the European places, Bilic’s troops should be motivated to serve up a fitting send-off for the Boleyn Ground following their collapse last weekend. Considering the wealth of forward options at the manager’s disposal, Andy Carroll’s 125,000 new owners will be hoping he retains his starting berth after a disappointing weekend display. Elsewhere among the Hammers’ attacking contingent, the 34% of voters who pinpointed Dimitri Payet as the premier captaincy pick will be hoping the Frenchman can bag his first goal in six starts and justify our collective show of faith.

Baggies hopeful on injured pair

West Brom pair Darren Fletcher and Jonny Evans are expected to recover from knocks sustained against Bournemouth on Saturday in time to line up against Liverpool next Gameweek. Meanwhile, Stephane Sessegnon is also likely to be available after missing the Dean Court encounter due to illness.

The Scout Says: The Baggies’ form at both ends of the pitch (three goals and zero clean sheets in six) leaves a lot to be desired, yet they next match up against a Reds outfit that’s likely to field a second-string XI ahead of the Europa League final on May 18. As such, there’s scope for the West Midlanders to furnish our squads with differential flavour on the last day of the Fantasy calendar. On that note, Craig Gardener ranked top for attempts (nine) and joint-top for shots inside the box (seven) among midfielders in his previous two starts, while Craig Dawson placed second for attempts (four) among defenders during that time frame.

Anthony Martial has travelled with United to London. Suggestion that the forward will have a fitness test ahead of kick off.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Midfield Maze

Our poll to find the best Fantasy Football midfielders of 2015/16 has now launched. The interesting thing about that list is that so few were in the running for last year. Each year, particularly in midfield, it is so hard to predict who will be a standout midfielder. Hazard looked a prime candidate this year after last year. And for those with a long memory Stephen Ireland was a sensation one year, only to falter the next.

Who do you think is primed for success in 2016/17 among midfielders?
Who do you think of this year's current frontrunners will be a success again?

Here's some context in terms of assists - the bread and butter of midfielders points

      Top assisters 2013/14

      Gerrard 13
      Ozil 9
      Silva 9
      Toure 9
      Cazorla/Eriksen/Mirallas/ Nasri 8

      Top assisters 2014/15

      Fabregas 18
      Cazorla 11
      Brunt 11
      Di Maria 10
      Sigurdsson 10

      Top assisters 2015/16

      Ozil 18
      Eriksen 13
      Tadic 12
      Mahrez/Milner/Silva 11

Very few can maintain high form. Eriksen now has strong pedigree. He'll be one I'll consider next season.

I had him and Alli for a period this year. Key reason why I had a few green arrows. I was a fool to let him go amid DGWK fever. Definitely a player that is a great fantasy asset.

Unpredictable returns however means that he's a great 8m mid but he'd be a terrible 10m mid as you'd struggle to feel comfortable captaining him 😛

Great, great player nevertheless, and one to consider next year with Alli's inevitable price hike!

Anyone you hope could remain (or become) cheap? 🙂 or will we be looking mainly at new imports and promoted assets?

Keeping a close eye out for the next George Boyd at the promoted clubs.

Hang on...it turns out George Boyd is the next George Boyd. 🙂

Chelsea and Man City are the two I'm keeping the closest eye on for premium options with their two new managers. Could even be a bargain should they take a shine to one of the squad players.

Haha! 😀 if fpl towers look on here pre-season then they might put Boyd as a 6m mid 😉 I wonder if he knows how popular he is on here after his heroics last time round..

Yep, good calls with Chelsea and City.. If Pep promotes any youth players to the first team I'll be very interested. Iheanacho could be a bargain if he manages to earn a spot beside Kun.

KDB is a class player and if he stays fit, he would be my favourite to top the FPL midfielders.

Alli has to be one who will only get better.

Payet and Mahrez again are quality players who will produce returns on a consistent basis.

Interesting that everyone is stating KDB at City. Pep is likely to play high possession football, where as KDB is possibly the best counter, transitional attacker. (under Klopp he would be top scorer without question)
Under Pep the best value midfielder is going to be Silva (pending his ankles)

At Liverpool, Firmino is the clear option. though I would recommend looking at Lallana. He's dramatically improved under Klopp and is prone to leading the high press.

Likewise to the Lallana call, Lamela at Spurs should be considered. His scoring stats at previous clubs are excellent, He's going to be my break out option from that Squad.

Trick of early season performers. Like how all awards go to late bloomers.
But the trouble is, Arsenal under Wenger have failed to run up scores for a while now, seem to stop at 2 nil. So any large rewards tend to be for the goal scoring midfield (Sanchez)

Yep, its sorted by matches which occasionally throws up a name like that....you just have to ignore him. Rest are sound though.

Ritchie, Costa and even Jordan Ayew among recent successes.

I tried sorting by Gameweeks but that was even more unfair due to blanks and doubles over the last four.

Alex Neil should have kept an eye on this table, perhaps Norwich would have more goals if he had kept hold of Johnson. 😉

      Hi guys

I would like Giroud but I'll need to take a hit to get him, as I have Bellers, Gabriel and Sanchez.

Is it worth it, do you think?

We should keep a clean sheet so it depends, do you think he will score more points than just one goal?? Say Gabriel gets 6 points you'll need Giroud to score at least 10 just to mkake it worth it.

I'm about 60-70 ahead in my ML just dropped outside the top 10k though with Carroll TC, Defoe, Payet, Hazard, Smalling, Clyne, Martin and Robles to play. Hoping I can still finish the week up there.

Does anyone know how I can see how many of top 10k played a chip this week?? Is it FPLdiscovery??

Secondly, with that advantage would you be inclined to take an 8 point hit next week for the hell of it to lose Hazard, Iwobi and Carroll for KDB, Long and Ozil/Ramsey??

      Rest of team:
      Robles (Mignolet)
      Simpson, Smalling, Koscielny ~(Martin, Clyne)
      Mahrez, Sanchez, Payet, *KDB* *Ozil/Ramsey*
      Kane, Defoe, *Long*

I understand the critics of LVG but can also see positives. According to Borthwick-Jackson and Varela et al there is a real buzz around the championship winning under-21 squad knowing that if they play well Van Gaal will give them a chance in the first team. I can't stomach Mourinho so hoping Louis stays on and does well next year.

Well the thing with LvG is, he will not win you the CL nor the title. That is just my opinion. He will hover around top 4-6 and thats it. While you may not stomach Mou, he will be the one that is able to win you those trophies.

Do you really want to depend on u21 players? In all honesty? Do you really want CBJ and Varela to be your main players and to become the next Arsenal ?

This is not completely true. Ibra has since stated that while their relationship aint good both him and LvG are professionals and as such would have no problem working together again.

not seen any direct quotes to that effect. And for all you know the Valdes issue could've just been a clash of personalities, with no blame attached, or it could've been Valdes' fault - thing is you don't know. The gutter press of course love to sensationalise everything. They go big on a 'story' and the next day it is forgotten, or withdrawn buried on page 24 or something

Ok it seems Robles and Milner will be no-shows this weekend. My rival has Milner too and De Gea in nets. Should I block his De Gea and double up with Smalling, or trade Milner?

      a, Robles>De Gea
      b, Milner>9.5m?
      c, Milner>De Bruyne(-4) (selling Lovren>4.0m)

I can cover Milner not starting as I have Lingard as sub.

      Tricky move! Team is;

      Robles/Darlow
      Bellerin Smalling PvA (Simpson Lovren)
      Sanchez(c) Iwobe Payet Milner (Lingard)
      Aguero Kane Defoe

      Cheers!

Nice! Well played. How long ago was the 180 lead?

If you're chasing then personally I wouldn't be looking to block because you need the differentials.

            But that's just my opinion.

              Pre-GW33 wildcard!

I think I may roll with Darlow and Smalling, and maybe a punt on Mane or something for Milner?!

Few days to mull it still yet!

That's great but don't get ahead of yourself.
You are behind, so I wouldn't think about blocking.
Just go for whichever is the best team for the week, if that i one of his players then so be it.

for me the jury is still out. He did well at Barca, but although Rijkaard had had a poor season and a half, before then he had made them into a great team too. Just as LvG had in his first stint, and Luis Enrique is doing now. Guardiola was just holding the torch and making some tweaks, he certainly didn't change the club like Cruijff did.

            • 10 Years

Agreed. It's one of the most nonsense things around IMO.

            Pre-Guardiola:
            2006-07: 2nd, 76 points
            2007-08: 3rd, 67 points
            Guardiola:
            2008-09: 1st, 87 points
            2009-10: 1st, 99 points
            2010-11: 1st, 96 points
            2011-12: 2nd, 91 points

Okay he inherited Messi, Xavi and Iniesta but to make them into the squad they became was incredible, especially considering the list of players he'd discarded within a year. Ronaldinho, Deco, Henry, Zambrotta, Yaya, Eto'o all surplus to his requirements and yes it speaks of Barca's largess, but he still made the club ~20 points a season better and won two Champions League. And what was that rubbish yesterday from Ruth about inheriting Busquets? He bought up Busquets in Barcelona B and then brought him to the first team when he took over there. Pep made Busquets what he is today.

      Martial's prospects:
Tight hamstring doesn't normally mean a lengthy lay off, does it?
And Martial has travelled with the squad. So maybe he will delight us owners with a 1pt cameo.

It's a must win game for united if they want top 4, if it's 0-0 and Martial is even 80% ready then he'll bring him on to try and win the game
