Team of the Season – Harry Kane

After emerging from nowhere to break through as a star of the Premier League during the 2014/15 season, Harry Kane cemented his standing as one of the top strikers in England with another outstanding campaign which saw him earn the Golden Boot accolade. The England international scored 25 goals, one better than both Sergio Aguero and Jamie Vardy, and was also named alongside Vardy in the PFA Team of the Year. Kane proved a popular Fantasy pick after a slow start to the season, and took 30% of the vote to take one of the three forward spots in our Team of the Season.

The Statistics

As already mentioned, Kane struggled during the early weeks of the season, possibly as a result of his involvement with England in the European Under 21 Championship last summer. Failing to register any attacking returns in the first six matches, his goal in the 4-1 victory over Man City in Gameweek 7 proved to be something of a turning point, with Kane then scoring seven times in just four appearances between Gameweeks 10 and 13, firmly putting himself back on the radars of Fantasy managers.

By the time the England international registered a hat-trick against Bournemouth in Gameweek 10, his price in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) had dropped to a season low of 9.2, having originally been valued at 9.5 at the start of the campaign. There were to be no more glaring dry spells for the Tottenham forward, with double-digit scores against Norwich (twice) and Sunderland during the winter months rewarding the many FPL bosses who entrusted him with the captain’s armband in such favourable match-ups.

As Spurs looked to push leaders Leicester at the top of the table, Kane remained deadly in front of goal, registering 10 strikes and an assist in his final 13 matches of the campaign, ending the season with 211 points in FPL – level with Vardy among forwards, and second to only Riyad Mahrez (240) across all positions. Kane’s price peaked at 10.4 during the final weeks following his 13-point haul in the 4-0 win at Stoke in Gameweek 34.

No forward amassed more bonus points than Kane (33), while the Tottenham man also led all forwards for both shots inside the box (105) and shots on target (74). In terms of points per game (ppg), Kane averaged 5.6, lagging slightly behind both Aguero (6.1) and Vardy (5.9), largely due to his slow start to the season. His total score of 211 points was the best among Tottenham players, with Christian Eriksen next on 178, while Dele Alli and Toby Alderweireld finished with 168 points apiece.

THE PROSPECTS

Having broken the 20-goal barrier in each of his last two seasons, Kane’s status as one of the leading strikers in the Premier League is in little doubt. In that respect, we should expect to see the England international be subject to a further price hike next time around, perhaps to around 11.0 or even 12.0 in FPL, the price tag that Chelsea’s Diego Costa was handed at the start of this season as a proven striker for a title-contending team.

While both Eriksen and Alli provided strong options from the Tottenham midfield this season, it’s likely that Kane will remain the primary attacking option on show at White Hart Lane. The difference in price between Kane and the two midfielders will certainly play a part in shaping our thoughts, though, and should Eriksen and Alli come in at least 2.0 cheaper, they could well prove viable alternatives to the striker. Kane will certainly be among the stand-out captaincy options on a weekly basis next season, however, with the benefit of penalty duties making the extra outlay perhaps worthwhile.

Worth noting is how Kane struggled to find the back of the net when Mousa Dembele wasn’t in the side. Indeed, Tottenham’s top scorer netted just one goal in the 11 league matches that Dembele failed to start in 2015/16, compared to 24 strikes in 27 outings with the Belgian on board. This is something to perhaps consider when building our pre-season squads, bearing in mind that Dembele will be suspended for the first four matches of the new campaign.

Although Mauricio Pochettino is expected to add to his squad over the summer ahead of next season’s Champions League campaign, Kane’s record as the only forward to start every league fixture last season underlines his importance to the Tottenham cause. At a time when fellow big-hitters Aguero and Daniel Sturridge remain susceptible to injury and the disciplinary record of Chelsea’s Costa continues to cause consternation, Kane’s consistency of both output and pitch time should ensure he remains a hugely popular option for our three-man frontlines in 2016/17.

How far can we consider Mathieu as a sure starter for France now that Varane is out for the tournament?

Surely Mangala (bad form at leaky city) and Sakho (failed drugs test for fat burners) haven't done enough to carry the flag at CB?

Mathieu is 4.5 which means a much needed 1.5mil saving on the French defence if he starts.

    Thanks in advance!

Croatia offer us the best asset in Perisic who should be in everyone's team and they have great depth in their squad around the pillars of Modric and Rakatic.

Alaba, Janko, Arnautovic offer goal threat for Austria whilst Fuchs is a great choice at both ends of the pitch.

The likes of Lichtsteiner and Rodriguez also roam up front and are solid defenders. Shaqiri is definitely one of the best forwards this year given his set piece duties.

These three teams will offer the best value, I'm certain of it. It could well be a lottery as to who gets the points with the depth of qulaity in Spain, Germany, France and England's teams. Ronaldo is the only sure way to goals and he costs 12mil.

I think Calanoglu is a better prospect than perisic. IMO Calanoglu is better than him, and Calanoglu is central to turkey. Even if turkey are garbage Calanoglu will definitely score goals because he is one of the greatest free kick takers in the world right now. (The best in the world right now IMO)

    Patricio 4.0
    Alba Hector Mangala Vrsiljko Denayer
    KDB Reus Alaba Memushaj Rafa-Silva

Denayer will be my main sub...a risk I know, but my captain potential swaps would be Griezman->Kane->Muller/Reus->Alba/KDB->Alaba

Agree to disagree : all the major French sports newspapers predict Griezmann Giroud Martial.

You have to remember that even though Payet has had an amazing season in the PL, he was vastly overlooked before in France, and he only got in the national team AND played well the last two friendlies.
It's still not considered enough the cement starting berth

And i would seriously doubt Giroud going 14 premier league games without a goal until a hat trick against Villa(lol) is considered enough to cement a starting berth.. wheteher he was overlooked before isn't really relevant the time is now..

I'm not debating the quality of the players. Griezmann is far, far superior to Giroud, and Payet should definitely have his place in the team.

But Deschamps favors stability. They are used to playing in this system, and he's not going to change it now. And to be fair, Giroud has not been so bad with the national team, and he does bring something that no other attacker in the squad does : he can be used as an anchor, with two fast players around him.

Besides, while a front 3 of Payet, Griezmann, Martial does look enticing, who is Payet going to cross all his nice balls to? Griezmann is 1,75m tall only.

It's a fair point regarding Giroud and what he brings.. he is a good player but international class.. not for me..
Would certainly expect Deschamps to go with a Martial Payet Griezmann front 3 in one of the friendlies to see how it works for him Martial could play centrally and is pretty handy in the air.. who knows what he will decide in the end

Tbh, being French myself, I would much rather see Giroud on the bench.
But another thing to take into account is that both Martial and Payet play on the left side in a 4-3-3.
And Martial hasn't played much - if at all - as the most advanced forward in a front 3.
If Payet were to start, I'd assume it would be instead of Martial, and Coman would play on the right with Griezmann up front.

But hopefully we'll now more in a few days after the friendlies.

Just need to decide on my front 3 which the friendlies should do. Giroud and Griezmann could change to a number of players.

    De Gea, Sommer
    Schar, Dragovic, Eliseu, Vrsaljko, Denayer
    Hazard, Ozil, Perisic, Alaba, Mak
    Griezmann, Giroud, Shaqiri

Denayer could become Mathieu, Gokhan Gonul, Fonte, or Hinteregger/ Prodl.

Might even just draft in Linelof (4.0) and use the 0.5m saved elsewhere

    DDG / Randolph
    Ramos / Eliseu / Mangala / Denayer / Vrsaljko
Kroos / Fellaini / Alli / Matuidi / Renato Sanches
    Ronaldo / Lewandowski / Giroud

Im considering swapping Denayer or Vrsaljko to Lindelof so i can upgrade Matuidi to Perisic

My question is should I ? as i quite like being 3 heavy on france given their group and home advantage but if yes who gets chopped out of the two above?

    Btw GW1 wc

    Almer - 4.0

    Sagna - Dragovic - Dier - Vrsaljiko - Denayer

    Alli - Calanoglu - Ozil - Martial - Memusaj

    Lewa - Mandzukic - Muller

I thinking should change Sagna to someone else but who? If I do drop to 5.0/4.5 French defender than I will probably get DDG and and 4.5 backup keeper if I drop to 4.5 idk where I would spend that .5 what do u think

Only watched him play once (and I was drunk - it was live) - He was a bit box to box, Vieira-esque but it's obviously not enough to base anything on. Based on the stats and my limited knowledge I'd advise just to monitor if he's above 5.5. As has been said above - he's more defensive than anything.

Stanciu seems to be on corners and free kicks

Having said that Keseru and Torje aren't on the pitch

    Thoughts on this:

    Patricio - Kozáčik
    Hector - Dier - Dragovic - Denayer - Vrsaljko
Fabregas - Alaba - Perišić - Weiss - João Mário
    Lewandowski - Griezmann - Muller

Could downgrade Mario to Rafa Silva but then not sure how to spend the 1.5m

I like it. And although my team isn't settled yet, I can see it looking something like this. I don't like Dier, Cesc, Weiss or Joao Mario. Schar or Rodriguez would replace Dier for me. Alli over Cesc as well. If Griez plays on the wing, I'd get Martial instead and get a forward like Janko/Shaqiri/Kane/Nani or whoever the budget allows for

Giroud is surely the best replacement for Griezmann. Keeps coverage, saves money

Got much hope for Kozáčik? Tempted by him just to pocket the 0.5m and spend elsewhere

Not good enough to be 1st choice striker in PL club. Boro will heavily struggle for goals.

I really don't think he is bought with the intent of being a striker though.

Fantastic signing if they can afford to give him time, only 21 and in a couple of years he could be a great asset.

Definitely bought for one of the 3 behind the main striker. I think we will buy another striker to compete with Rhodes

I am liking my side at the moment but a few choices will have to be made regarding Muller or Lewandowski and when I intend on using my wildcard.

The wildcard thing could affect my GW1 side a lot I think. It is quite tempting to go all out with a team tailored for GW1 then WC just after

I think I have nailed my strikers and GKs atm. Debating either to defence heavy + light midfield or a heavy midfield + a light defence

I am quite sure I will be WCing in GW 3 because player prices will change post GW 3 and it might be wise to bulk up on one's TV

    B) Juanfran + Alli + Griezmann
    C) Jordi Alba + Alli + Giroud
