Scout Notes – Pre-Season Round-Up

Jermain Defoe plays a part in all three of Sunderland’s goals away to Hartlepool. Antonio Conte opts for a 4-2-4 formation and earns his first win as Chelsea boss, whilst Callum Wilson nets twice as Bournemouth sweep aside Minnesota United.

WAC RZ Pellets 0 Chelsea 3

Goals from Bertrand Traore and substitutes Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Nathaniel Chalobah handed Antonio Conte his first win as Chelsea coach.

Traore scored from a Willian cross before the second half subs put the result beyond question, with a Victor Moses corner setting up Loftus-Cheek, who finished the match up front alongside new signing Michy Batshuayi.

Conte’s side lined up in a 4-2-4 formation, which switched to a more conventional 4-4-2 when not in possession, with Traore and Diego Costa often joined by Willian, on the right, and Moses pushing high up on the flanks.

Nemanja Matic and Oscar, who was handed his first pre-season start, took the central midfield roles, while Papy Djilobodji was again stationed at centre-half and Ola Aina was preferred to Baba Rahman at left-back.

Conte liked what he saw from Belgian international Batshuayi, but reserved much of his post-match analysis for the versatility of Loftus-Cheek, who was afforded a spot up front in the second period:

“Every manager has their own idea about a system of play. In this system, with two midfielders, Ruben can play close to the other forward but become a forward when we have the ball. He has the right characteristics to play in this position and he showed that today. Ruben is young with great potential. I like him a lot in the position of striker. He can improve a lot because he has great potential, good technique, good personality and he is good one v one.”

Chelsea Starting XI: Begovic, Ivanovic (Rahman 46), Terry (Miazga 89), Djilobodji (Hector 58), Aina; Oscar (Chalobah 73), Matic (Mikel 85); Willian (Atsu), Traore (Loftus-Cheek 58), Costa (Batshuayi 58), Moses (Kenedy 89).

Hartlepool United 0 Sunderland 3

A routine pre-season win for the Black Cats was completely overshadowed by the news that their manager looks set to take on the England job.

Sam Allardyce reportedly told his players at half-time, didn’t reappear after the break and then left the ground midway through the second period.

The uncertainty surrounding Allardyce’s future has left the club ill-prepared as regards squad strengthening, and at Hartlepool the only new face was trialist Charles N’Zogbia, who was one of 11 changes made at the break. Bizarrely, the former Aston Villa player was made captain.

All the key action had been concluded by then as Allardyce rolled out a very strong starting XI. Jermain Defoe scored twice, opening his account from a Billy Jones long ball, and Wahbi Khazri also found the net when he tucked in a rebound from a Defoe shot.

Holding midfielder Jan Kirchhoff missed out as a precaution but is expected to be fit in time for the weekend clash against Rotherham.

Sunderland XI: First half: Mannone, Jones, Kaboul, Kone, van Aanholt, Cattermole, Lens, Rodwell, Defoe, Borini, Khazri.

Sunderland XI: Second half: Pickford, J Robson, Ledger, Beadling, T Robson, E Robson, Honeyman, Gooch, N’Zogbia, Greenwood, Watmore.

Minnesota United 0 Bournemouth 4

A first-half double for Callum Wilson, a late finish from Lewis Grabban and a comedy own-goal from Minnesota goalkeeper Sammy Ndjock were the highlights of an easy Bournemouth win in America.

Jordon Ibe made his debut after his move from Liverpool and Bournemouth were home and hosed before the break.

Wilson was well placed to tap in twice, first from a Charlie Daniels cross and then when a Harry Arter shot rebounded back off the post, and in between Cameroon international goalkeeper Ndjock contrived to throw the ball into his own net as the Cherries strolled to victory.

Grabban rounded off the scoring late on after an error from their host’s other keeper in a generally low-key second half, although Max Gradel managed to get himself sent off in an altercation with Lowe following a rather robust challenge from the Minnesota man.

Bournemouth XI: First half: Boruc; MacDonald, Cargill, Butcher, Daniels; Ibe, Arter, L. Cook, Pugh; Mousset, Wilson.

Bournemouth XI: Second half: Federici; MacDonald, Francis, Butcher, Wiggins; Pugh, O’Kane, Gosling, Gradel; Grabban, King.

Huddersfield Town 0 Liverpool 2

A drone halting play, a missed penalty and a reserve goalkeeper sent on as a makeshift striker – Liverpool’s win at Huddersfield had its moments.

The main attraction, however, was Serbian midfielder Marko Grujic, who played his second half of football for the Reds and scored his second goal, firing in from a Roberto Firmino pass.

Firmino, Philippe Coutinho and Sadio Mane again started for Liverpool, and Mane was lively in the first period, having a goal ruled out for offside before being felled in the penalty area, only for Coutinho to miss from the spot.

In the absence of Joel Matip, who damaged an ankle at Wigan on Sunday, Lucas Leiva played alongside Dejan Lovren at centre back, but the Brazilian limped off with a suspected hamstring issue after the break, prompting Klopp to send on Academy keeper Shamal George – up front.

When Ryan Kent earned another penalty late on, the Liverpool fans demanded George take it. Alberto Moreno had other ideas, however, and had the good sense to convert the spot kick.

Klopp had made seven changes by that stage and the match had become a drab affair, illuminated only by a rogue drone and the earlier performance of Grujic who, with Joe Allen on course for a move to Stoke City, is making a strong case for plenty more pitch time.

Liverpool Starting XI: Karius, Randall (Alexander-Arnold 46), Lovren, Lucas (George 67), Moreno, Ejaria (Wisdom 46), Stewart, Grujic (Woodburn 46), Mane (Kent 46), Coutinho (Markovic 46), Firmino (Ings 46).

Rubin Kazan 3 West Ham 0

A thumping defeat made it four pre-season matches without a win for Slaven Bilic’s men.

In mitigation, it was the Hammers’ second match in as many days and Bilic used 19 players as he continues to prepare for Europa League action at the end of the month, but the team’s lack of defensive cohesion remains a major issue.

New signings Sofiane Feghouli, Havard Nordtveit and Gokhan Tore all featured as Bilic went with a strong starting line-up which also included Mark Noble, Aaron Cresswell and Michail Antonio, who was used as a right back.

Andy Carroll missed out as he continues to build up his fitness via an individual training programme, whilst skipper Winston Reid was rested from training and failed to play a part.

West Ham XI: Adrian; Antonio (Cullen 64), Nordtveit, Burke (Rice 33), Cresswell (Page 74); Kouyate (Browne 74); Feghouli (Samuelsen 80), Quina (Obiang 46), Noble, Tore (Fletcher 74); Valencia (Martinez 80).

Bayern Munich 1 Manchester City 0

City’s Pep Guardiola era began with a defeat to his former club as the coach took a squad to Bavaria that included 12 Academy players.

New signing Oleksandr Zinchenko made his debut, other summer captures Ilkay Gundogan and Nolito did not, and captain Vincent Kompany was an unused substitute as Wilfried Bony caught the eye up front in the second half. Kompany’s inclusion came as a real surprise, with local reports now indicating he is on course to be fit for the start of the season.

Guardiola employed a 4-2-3-1 formation, with Zinchenko in the No10 role behind lone striker Kelechi Iheanacho in the first period, and the coach’s trademarks – quick passing and high pressing – were in evidence throughout.

The fact that stand-in goalkeeper Willy Caballero was the man of the match, pulling off a string of fine saves, spoke volumes for the general flow of the match – and the inexperience of City’s side.

A more telling analysis of City under their fabled new coach will come when key players return for the trip to China.

Post-match, Guardiola was keen to stress that last night’s match was all about giving a number of players experience at the top level:

“We cannot forget which team we played – with eight or nine of their top players – whilst we had lots of young players, who played amazingly. We need time: we need to play in these games to see their level, and if – during the season – we can use them.”

Man City XI: First half: Caballero, Maffeo, Adarabioyo, Kolarov, Angelino, Fernando, Fernandinho, Zinchenko, Barker, Iheanacho, Navas.

Man City XI: Second half: Gunn, Maffeo, Adarabioyo, Kolarov, Angelino, Clichy, Fernando, Fernandinho, Delph, Bony, Navas.

    Bottomed ,

Im incredibly excited about this plan Ive formulated , I know people will say its too long to plan but with some luck with injuries I dont see why this wont work:

    Foster ( Japu)

    Mcauley Friend Shaw Soare 4.0

    Ayew Siggy Mkhi Bolasie 4.5

    Aguero Ibra Bat/Lukaku

The idea is to have an imbalanced team based on fixture strength in the short term and plan to wc im gw5 .

    Gw2: Save

GW3 : Ayew + Siggy to premium mid who looks good (probably city at home to whu and budget mid bandwagon)

GW4: Luxury transfer (united play city, jose will keep it tight probably one of my city or united mids to best fixture on that gw depending on how attacking city and united looking )

GW5: WC in triple city Kane and sacnhez for ars and spurs plum fixtures plus dembele due back on that day! 🙂

Super excited just wanted to share 🙂

    Aguero Giroud Gray

Covers 3 top defences and then mid / wba rotate reasonably well

Always surprising to me how Daniel Sturidge continues to be in the expensive striker bracket. Apart from his one superb season with Suarez as striker partner, he hasn't done anything (other than being injured) to deserve that price, 8.0 would have been a good price for him. So this definitely begs the question does FPL price some players on potential and past reputation rather than what happened the previous season? Compare this with Costa's price this season based on his average previous season.

And how many fantasy points has this turned into over the years about from his one blinding season? Don't get me wrong I like the guy he is a great striker but i'm talking about FPL points here.

Well seeing as he has barely played the last 2 seasons it's hardly surprising he hasn't been that great an fpl option, but he's fit (for now) and has 12 goals in 1731 minutes whilst struggling for form / regular games.

8 goals and 2 assists from under 1000 minutes is pretty good. 10.0 is too much because of his risk of injury, but when fit I think he's the second best striker in the league

Costa in Chelsea's title winning season 2years ago was second highest scorer wasn't he? Truth is Sturridge is not on the pitch enough to justify the outlay, FPL pricing should consider this

          • 13 Years

Aguero gets injured every year and is still the most expensive player. When fit they score lots of points, when injured you just sell them. You can't price them cheaply in a game where they won't stay in your team all year.

Aguero is expensive because despite his injuries he consistently ends up in the top 3 goalscorers in an EPL season, Strurridge on the other hand............A good example is Rooney, always consistently priced high but for the past three seasons, his pricing has been dropping because his FPL points has been dropping and I think he has been priced slightly right this year.

If studge stays fit though he will also be in the top three strikers, price is based on projected points per minute not on overall points for the whole season simply cos this is a game where we don't have to keep the player the whole season. If we did then I accept your argument that sturridge price should be heavily reduced for the risk that one might be stuck with an injured player but thats not how the game works. If anything im surprised his price dropped from last season...

Reading Wijnaldum to Liverpool is close....Liverpool midfield could be a rotational nightmare this season?

Surely they need to be strengthening defensively.

Matip I'm sure will do well, but the other two I thought were not really an improvement on what they already have.

Clyne needs some competition for his place, and LB is essential.

Way too much of a minefield, and Sturridge is too risky at his price, especially when I'm almost certain I'll have Aguero and Ibra in my team GW1

Why risky? Because of iinjuries? Same applies to Aguero

Yes, injuries, the same does apply to Aguero, but with Aguero it tends to be one major injury and he's out for a few weeks, and then he's back again.

With Sturridge, it's stop/start all season, too unpredictable.

    Mandanda ( Jakupovic )

Happy enough with it.. Pretty settled for the moment but like yourself expecting lots to change.

More so figuring out my team structure for the moment and what teams / rotations / balance I want to aim for.

          Foster
          Friend - McAuley - Pieters
          Mahrez - Willian - Ayew - Lamela
          Kun - Ibra - Wilson
          ((Heaton - Gradel - NTaylor - Koné))
          0.5 itb

Tough to choose the midfield.. Hoping someone becomes obvious 🙂

That's the way it goes of course! Yeah I'd wait and see sure, some will make more signings, talk I think of one of the Burnley lads leaving or something which would mean one of the 4.0 defenders would be nailed on etc. Then you have guys like Mata, who if they wound up moving would be diamond picks. Plenty of time yet.

Get him fit and playing in the right position and he'll come good again. Gotze + Reus = footballing bromance that's hard not to love

Schurrle would be a weird signing for Dortmund though, not sure why they're willing to pay so much for him.

.My big problem is an attitude like his when mixed in with the young players they've signed this Summer, all of whom have really big futures, could well be a nasty combination. I'll see how it goes, but not remotely happy.

I thought lots of Dortmund fans were welcoming him back. Tbf he was basically a kid when he turned his back on them, a stupid, arrogant kid, but a kid nonetheless. And he clearly wants to come back, sounds like he rejected Klopp and Spurs.

I'm optimistic it's the right move for all involved. Can't wait to watch Mor/Guerreiro/Mangala next year.

A lot don't want him back. I do understand he's young and it was immaturity on his part, but I have serious questions about his loyalty. Maybe I'll be wrong on it all and he'll grow up a lot, I hope so. But a guy who ditches the team who made him a professional football player for their rivals, then spends all his time moaning that he should get more game time needs to cop on.

I am too, some really exciting players in now.

    Repost from yesterday

As I'm from Northern Ireland and Evans, McAuley, Brunt are all from there I would say to go for Evans.

Evans was arguably our best player at the Euros and if fit is by far the best option, under Pulis he also got some time as a CM so some OOP potential.

McAuley is 37 now and although he was brilliant for us he is not guaranteed to play every game, he has great goal threat but lacks a bit of pace.. Expect a bit of rotation

Brunt is an interesting pick, he's been poor for us and is only worth getting for his set pieces, he's also not on pens but if you value set pieces at 0.5m then he's your pick.

0.5 left to spend on this, where would you upgrade?

    Foster / Heaton
Terry / Shaw / Friend (McAuley / Pieters)
De Bruyne / Martial / Lamela / Bolasie (Capoue)
    Aguero / Lukaku / Long

I'm currently thinking about doing one of the following:

    Terry -> Azpilicueta
One of the 4.5 defenders -> a 5.0 defender (maybe Gabriel, Mertesacker or Wimmer for Arsenal / Spurs coverage)
    Lamela -> a 7.5 mid (probably Sigurdsson)
    Martial -> Hazard
    Lukaku -> Costa

    What would you go for?

With Liverpool rumoured to be signing WIjnaldum, they are looking to be seriously overloaded in midfield for a team with no European football. I wonder if any one of them are nailed, or if it's going to be a heavy season of rotation.
