The Fantasy Football Scout Rate My Team Surgery

Welcome to the first in our series of Rate My Team Surgeries. These articles will look at initial Fantasy Premier League squads and will be published ahead of Gameweek 1, with one of the FFScout moderator and contributor team putting forward their selection for scrutiny in order to start discussion.

The aim is to highlight some of the key concerns we have faced in constructing their squads, which hopefully will chime with other FPL managers’ issues.

In addition, we want the comment section to provide a useful opportunity for you to submit your own RMTs. Please also be helpful to those asking for advice. The key to successful rating of teams is to give advice as well.

I have drawn the first straw to start off this series with my fixture-led initial FPL squad.

My Team

Heaton (BUR) Foster (WBA)

Shaw (MUN) Walker (TOT) Friend (MID) Francis (BOU) Robertson (HUL)

Mkhitaryan (MUN) Ayew (SWA) Tadic (SOU) Townsend (CPL) Capoue (WAT)

Gray (BUR) Aguero (MCI) Ibrahimovic (MUN)

Team cost £100m

Key Issues

Fixtures
The fixture schedule has been my guide in the absence of any form at the start of the season. A strong set of early fixtures for West Brom (cpl, EVE, MID, bou, WHM, sto) makes a defender or keeper a must for me. Ben Foster gets the nod due to his 4.5m price tag.

Middlesbrough have a strong early run too (STO, sun, wba, CPL, eve) which makes George Friend a good bet. Nailed on and with impressive underlying statistics last season, which FPL’s Bonus Point System favours.

Manchester United are another with good early fixtures (bou, SOT, hul, MCI, wat) and I’ve gone to town on their players with three lining up in my initial squad. Luke Shaw looks good value at 5.5 after an injury-hit 2015/16. Zlatan Ibrahimovic would be tricky to draft in at 11.5 if I didn’t have him immediately, whilst Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s 9.5 price and early pre-season form have also guided my thinking.

Questions: Am I relying too much on fixtures? Is tripling up on Manchester United too much? Am I foolish for ignoring Chelsea’s excellent early fixtures?

Value
My goalkeeper combination is all about value. Two nailed on stoppers, with a great track record of saves, all for 9m. That looks too good to turn down. Also their fixtures dovetail nicely early on for rotation.

I’ve also gone for players I think will outperform their price tag. Kyle Walker at 5.5, when his team-mate Danny Rose is 6m, looks a steal. Attacking points and clean sheets should follow especially with a strong early start (eve, CPL, LIV, sto, SUN, mid).

Dusan Tadic and Andre Ayew also look well priced considering the attacking role they play for their teams.

I’ve also ensured I can afford the likes of Sergio Aguero by opting for budget bench players. Etienne Capoue (4.5) will rarely play for me, but I’m happy to call on him particularly as he appears to have license to bomb forward under Watford’s new manager, Walter Mazzarri – already in pre-season, he has scored twice.

Hull’s Andrew Robertson is nailed on, and due to poor fixtures is likely to be benched each week. He could do well, though, if called upon. Likewise, Simon Francis may not have good fixtures but is a player I’m happy to rely on when needed.

Questions: Have I selected the best 7.5 midfielders? Have I got the right 4.5 defenders in place? Are there any 4.0 defenders I should consider?

Flexibility
This is key for me and has meant I’ve gone for players that are not necessarily my preferred picks in each position, but allow me to downgrade if required.

For example Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino is a player I like, particularly for 8.5, instead of Mkhitaryan, but it is far easier for me to downgrade from the Manchester United midfielder to Firmino than vice versa. Ideally I’d have the more expensive Eden Hazard in my team for even greater flexibility, but I struggled to find the extra 0.5 needed.

Burnley’s Andre Gray is not ideal. He faces Swansea in Gameweek 1 but fixtures are mixed afterwards, with Chelsea and Leicester away over the first six. At 6.5, though, I can easily swap him to cheaper options or the wealth of forwards at the same price, most notably Saido Berahino should he move from West Brom. Opting for Jordan Rhodes (6.0) makes it tough to upgrade, for example, particularly with Alvaro Negredo now on board at Middlesbrough.

Questions: Am I being too sensible here? Should I just go for the best players that I can afford regardless of whether I can change them for emerging stars?

Captains
Finally I have invested heavily in ensuring I have two great options in Ibrahimovic and Aguero, who alternate perfectly home and away. Both can easily be downgraded as well for other expensive players, such as Chelsea’s strikers. Getting them in if they are not in my initial squad may require wildcarding.

Questions: Can I rely on just two players for the armband? Should I be looking for a third premium option from among Arsenal, or Chelsea’s ranks?

Hi there, my current team is looking like this, any thoughts?

    Cech - Jakupovic
    Koscielny - Walker - Dann - Pieters - Friend
    Payet - Mahrez - Alli - Bolasie - Capoue
    Sturridge - Vardy - Gray

Will play 3-4-3 most weeks unless Gray's fixture looks horrible.

    Thanks 🙂

OK, so every year I go with Aguero and he gets injured which is why he was left out.

I took on board your advice and here goes:

        Foster - Jakupovic
        Shaw - Walker - McAuley - Pieters - Friend
        Mkhitaryan - Mahrez - Alli - Bolasie - Capoue
        Aguero - Costa - Wilson

I think Phil Jones is a doubt in defence so try another option from one of the 'big hitters'. Willian was decent last year but I believe that was a one off, I would not have him. Likewise Lamela. Forward line looks very strong which is where the points roll in from.

    2. ElDaddy

Not sure whether Jones will be nailed on, gotta wait for that. I fancy a KDB -> Hazard and then Willian to one of Payet or Mahrez, they will be needed at one point. Other than that looking good

If you are WC GW4 i would be tempted to go for an Everton defender over Terry.

Phil Jones may not play due to competition from Bailly.

Still dont think Willian is a decent fantasy option but then again would need to see how they play in pre-season.

I know Mou said he likes Phil, but the risk of rotation is there, but you probably know more than I do about your defensive situtation. I don't see palace keeping clean sheets but I understand that there are little options in the 4.5 area. Aguero and Ibra kept your mids slightly cheaper. Lamela might rotate, so keep an eye. Willian doesn't get involved into many goal situations directly, and feel like fab may be a better option. Pedro and Cuadrado might pose a slight threat, so keep an eye on Chelsea's preseason.

I don't like Jakupovic, Jones, Paredes or Lamela as picks really. The first 3 are very unlikely to be regulars, and as a Spurs fan I like Lamela - but he's not consistent enough with his attacking output to be a good FPL pick yet IMO. The cost of Aguero, Zlatan and KDB is killing your team - downgrade Zlatan, KDB or probably both!

Tweaked based on some handy advice:

    Heaton, Foster

    Kun, Costa, Rondon

Wait and see with how Chelsea line up, some think Fabregas will either play very far back or not at all. Would prefer Townsend over Bolasie if you can squeeze in the funds.

Not a fan of Rondon due to WBA not being an attacking side, good player, just in the wrong team.

    Foster-Jaku
    Shaw-Friend-Souare-Pieters-Kone
    Hazard-Martial-Mahrez-Ayew-Capoue
    Aguero-Benteke-Long

If Benteke doesn't get a transfer I will revamp based on that, maybe downgrade Hazard to Willian as I fancy him this year and upgrade Benteke

Interesting that you went Mahrez. I like your team. If I had to change something, I'd say downgrade one of your mids to strengthen your defence a little bit. Other than that, strong team I feel like.

Yeah I'd like one more solid Def but the only way I see doing that would be to downgrade Haz to Willian, which i honestly woulnd't mind doing. Next problem would be to pick a prem def, thinking Azpi and with the extra get Williams too

Defence is a bit light but each to their own! Would fancy a second premium defender.

Nice team though, toss up between Long and Austin for me

Yeah may try to work that in but definitely a toss up between those two, i think if they play 2 up top I will take Austin as he has something to prove. Long just seems more nailed at this point that's all

    Foster

    4.0, Friend, 4.5 for, 4.0 def

Well at least with your subs it's easy to pick a team every week. I'm a fan, can't see where I would change other than maybe downgrade a defender to a 4.5 who rotates with Friend. Use the .5 to upgrade a mid but can't really think of who, but I think i'd want a chelsea player in with Conte's new formation allowing them to get forward.

I don't trust the ever rotating City fullbacks. Willian might have some competition on the right wing and besides his free kicks, doesn't really offer much to directly contribute to goals, so keep an eye on that. I like the rest though.

    3. Elijah's Wood
      • 9 Years

What a difference not having Zlatan in a team does for the midfield!

Not a fan of Sagna, City defence is pants without Kompany and he may be rotated. Wait and see how Pep builds his team but there are better attacking defenders, maybe swap him to a United one for coverage? Seems to be very heavily owned

    4. Keep Calm and Play On

I like it but the double on City with a new manager is a bit of a punt, I know they both have PL experience but Pep plays a different style and they have to adapt, I'd be tempted for a Utd mid for coverage and the fact that they now have a goal poacher so assists are incoming. Also I don't trust Sagna better options at 5.5, shaw, walker perhaps or williams and upgrade taylor too. Stones may not be nailed, if he moves to City I would rate him but at Everton it's a risk.

Plan to Wildcard in GW4 for the international break to catch price changes:

    Foster
    Shaw Baines Soare Wasilewski
    KDB Mahrez Ayew/Siggy
    Aguero Zlatan £6.5m (undecided)

    [Jaku Friend Watson Capoue]

Trying to capitalise on the players with the best fixtures, probably end up playing 4-3-3 or possibly 3-4-3.

Going to swap KDB for Hazard after Sunderland, probably offload the Swans attacker after their fixtures turn in GW3. Gone for two of Watford's cheap mids as Watson is on set pieces and Capoue is on fire in friendlies.

Any feedback would be great, thanks!

hull ARS SWA - first three though!

Hull are injury riddled, Arsenal will still be resting their first team players like Koscielny/Ozil/Ramsey/Sanchez, and Swansea will get battered.

Easy downgrade to virtually anyone as well if he doesnt score big against Hull

    2. Ryssel

      We have somewhat similar teams.
I haven't seen Baines in too many teams, but he could be an absolute steal at 5.5, considering that their defense should tighten up under Koeman.
My current front three is Ibra/Kun/Wilson, it seems a pretty strong trio upfront... but I'm a bit worried about Kun starting the first few games of the season considering he played in Copa America.

I'm also feeling like Hazard will have a good season....

Personally I'm not a big fan of Watson... I'm a Wigan fan and I just saw him fire freekicks wildly over the box on multiple occasions to give the ball back to the goal for a goalkick. But he does score important goals every now and again.

Otherwise it seems decent.... You are not worried about your 4.0 defenders not playing? This is something I want to avoid during the first GW especially as you never know who mysteriously gets rested or exactly what the Managers first 11 is until after GW1.

      1. Elijah's Wood
        • 9 Years

Its between Baines and Coleman for me, will see how Koeman builds his team but their fixtures are too good to be missed, and Baines if given the free roaming license he had in the past should be FPL gold.

Aguero's game time is a worry so will see what Pep does in the friendlies, hopefully he is back otherwise can leave some cash in the bank to get him in GW2, seems as though its suicide to not start with him, though last year i think he missed GW1.

Hazard and Chelsea should do well, it looks set on paper.

Watson is a just bench fodder that i shouldnt have to use much so not too concerned with his ability, just seemed like one of the best options in that range, the rest of defensive mids that do nothing fantasy wise.

Wasilewski should start in place of Huth (suspended) for the Hull game which is the only time i will play him, otherwise Friend has nice fixtures

Once i Wildcard i will create a more balanced team hopefully, get rid of the £4m's and £4.5m's

        Thanks for the feedback Ryssel!

What Dazzy said, Koscielny will probably be rested from playing in the Euros final.

Zouma wont be fit until after the first 4 weeks, John Terry should be covering until he is ready.

Funes Mori suffers rotation, i think he should start but it all depends on where Stones goes/stays.

      Ozil rested from the Euros.

Mata and Fabregas positions are up in the air, Mata may be moving to another club which would be great, otherwise highly unlikely to play. Moniter how Chelsea line up in pre-season matches to see if Fabregas features, cant see him finding a place in a 4-2-4/4-4-2, might play a much deeper role which hurts his prospects.

Rashford will get very very little game time ahead of Zlatan.

Coutinho has bad fixtures until GW6 but Liverpool look a decent side so could still score

      1. Welshxavi

Zouma is already back in training, I agree with Mata and Rashord and I'll have to monitor Funes Mori in pre season but he does have very good attackive returns, and it looks like Fabregas will play Cam with matic and Kante behind him, and can Arsenal afford to rest 2 of their best players for an important fixture

        1. Elijah's Wood
          • 9 Years

Wenger has usually rested key players after coming back from competitions, Sanchez was rested GW1 last year.

I thought Conte said that Zouma still has weeks of recovery and that he's not pushing him into starting any time soon.

I just dont see where Fab will play if Chelsea lines up:

          Courtois
          Azpi Terry Cahill/Baba Ivanovic
          Hazard Kante Matic Willian
          Costa Batshy

King might not start with Wilson back and the abundance of options on the wings. I would try to upgrade Grabban to a starter. Having both Ibra and Kun has affected your defence and midfield. Maybe consider downgrading Ibra and one of your premium mids to buff your defence and mid and get 11 good starters.

We all know how important it is to get a good start in the FPL game. It's not much fun being ranked 2 millionth after 2 or 3 GWs and then playing catch up. For me, the key is picking the right big hitters and the right differentials. Last year I managed a half decent rank by having Mahrez, Payet and Ighalo early on. I am tempted by the following this year and any info on them by those in the know would be much appreciated:

    Albert Adomah
    Stephen Berghuis
    Isaac Success
    Andre Gray
    Vincent Janssen

Andre gray scored 23 championship goals and was named championship player of the year. On pens too. By far Burnley's biggest goal threat.
      Avoid the rest

But what will be the difference between the Burnley side of 2 seasons ago and the current one? They were hardly attacking then, just not sure they will capitalise on attacking enough to benefit Gray

First stab, no doubt plenty of tinkering to come (especially as I've gone three bigger hitters):

    Foster-Heaton
    Stones-Friend-N.Taylor-Souare-Pieters
    Hazard-Siggy-Townsend-Dier-Fletcher
    Aguero-Ibra-Lukaku

Dier really isn't that great of an option since he has been reclassified to a mid and won't score much due his defensive role. Having both Aguero and Ibra really limits to options in your defence. Potentially consider downgrading one to help your defence and possibly get a few more top scoring mids.

Would you consider this a light midfield?
    Martial - Townsend - 9.0m - Bojan - Ayew
I have one (midfield) position left to fill and 9.0m to spend. Any recommendations? But as I said: Is that midfield weak?

    Thoughts on this team?

    Foster Mandanda
    Shaw Baines Friend Evans Paredes
    Mhkitaryan Hazard Coutinho Bolasie Hojbjerg
    Aguero Costa Wilson

I know the defence is weak and I'm thinking of downgrading one of the midfielders to upgrade the defence

All you need to do is find an extra .5 to upgrade Paredes to a 4.5. This creates a three way rotation with friend and Evans. Play Shaw+ Baines every week.
Costa to lukaku is an obvious option.

Yeah I was thinking about downgrading Costa because double Chelsea might be overkill but if he stays I fancy him to do well this season

I hate myself for posting this but here we go

    Foster - Heaton

    Azpi - Walker - Shaw - Friend - Paredes

    Mkhitaryan - Firmino - Sigurdson - Feghouli - Capoue

    Aguero - Ibra - 4.5

1.0 itb leaves room if a 9.5 mid makes a name for himself in week 1 or some flexibility to upgrade elsewhere easily

I would not have Feghouli. I watched him a lot at Valencia the past two years and he has lost pace, confidence and does not seem to be up to it any longer. Plus he rarely plays 90 minutes.

You'ld be forced to pay one of friend and capoue every week. Upgrade capoue or 4.5 striker to a player you can play week in week out and downgrade elsewhere.

Dont think your midfield is strong enough to play 3-5-2. Feghouli and Capoue arent attacking enough to outscore a striker IMO

Watch out for Firimino's opening fixtures. having 2 bench fodders is I feel waiting for disaster. I think there are better options than Feghouli. West Ham have quite a few options in the midfield. Your midfield also isn't that eye-catching Try downgrading Ibra/a premium defender to upgrade Feghouli and the 4.5 striker.

The 5.0 -7 .0 midfielder price bracket is a bit gash and it's what I'm struggling with most. Looking at Ibe otherwise apart from Feghouli so I understand the concern indeedy for that slot

Ibra and Aguero have the strikers sorted not too convinced without more pre season about strikers atm

442 is what I was aiming for rotating one of Friend, Capoue or Paredes

I think I'm going mad with all the potential different things I could do with my team.

May I have your thoughts on my current iteration?

    Mandanda/Valdes
    Shaw/Wimmer/McAuley/Pieters/Ake
    Mkhitaryan/Payet/Willian/Lamela/Højbjerg
    Aguero/Costa/Wilson

    Many Thanks.

Doubling up on Chelsea attack is quite a risk. I say change Willian to Tadic/Siggy. Keep an eye on Lamela's starting situation. Payet might start slow with his Euro involvement and with the amount of West Ham mids, there might be some rotation at the beginning. Besides that, solid squad.

I think Chelsea are gonna be much better this year. My biggest thought their is whether I should pick Willian or Fabregas, but I feel like Willian's ability to put in a shift defensive will be more attractive to Conte. I totally agree with Payet being a bit risky to start with, being tired and with a lot of changes to the team at West Ham. Might think about changing.

        Thanks!

Would it be more worthwhile to put Luke Shaw in my team or David De Gea?

Also, what are people's thoughts on Sofiane Feghouli for a 4th midfielder?

I would say shaw, as he has the added bonus of attacking potential. If United's defence do their job properly their shouldn't be much for De Gea to do.

Thanks, I considered De Gea because you get more points for clean sheets than for save points that's all. If he stays fit he's always gonna be amongst the highest scoring keepers' so would be a safe option I guess

I've been through many permutations and I've got this for now:

    Heaton - Foster
    Shaw - Souare - Fernandez - Walker - Gabriel
    Hazard - Shaqiri - Townsend - Sigurdsson - Fletcher
    Aguero - Ibrahimovic - Long

The main issues I'm thinking about at the moment:
    - Am I a bit thin in midfield?
    - Shaqiri (6.5) vs Bojan (6.0)??
    - Siggy vs Ayew (both 7.5)

Of course any thoughts will be greatly appreciated!

Having Aguero and Ibra is going to leave your defence and midfield a little lacking. Downgrading one to buff your side is something I recommend. Gabriel is a rotation risk, so monitor that. Personally, I don't trust Stoke midfield, maybe try upgrading or possibly one of Deulofeu/Mirallas can offer something if nailed. Milner also is always an option. I rate Siggy over Ayew.

    Foster
    Shaw - Morgan - Souare
    Mkhitaryan - Eriksen - Fabregas - Barkley
    Aguero - Costa - Long

    Jakupovic - Feghouli - Fernandez - Friend

I have found Souare/Fernandez/Friend to rotate well each week. Feghouli and Long will also rotate, switching formation from 3-4-3 to 3-5-2. I've gone with double Chelsea attack as I can see both Fabregas and Costa having good starts. Any thoughts/suggestions?

I quite like it. Double Chelsea is a gamble of course. Not mad keen on Barkley and there's the whole Eriksen-without-Dembele thing but could be worse and there's plenty of reasonable alternatives at 7.5.

Everyone's defences and keepers are looking alike already.

After 2 days of tweaking... this is where I'm at. Any suggestions or feedback?

      Foster (Jaku)
      Shaw Baines Williams (Francis, Pieters)
      Hazard, Martial, Bolasie, Snodgrass (Capoue)
      Zlatan, Aguero, Wilson

I needed to cut in midfield a little to afford my front 3 and Baines+Shaw, but Snodgrass served me well in the past (minus the first week injury from was it last season?)... and Bolasie I'm not completely sold on yet, but it also depends a bit on Benteke going to palace or not. Thanks for the Capoue tip Jonty! I'm doing Martial over Mikhi as it usually takes players a few weeks to settle into the league... and Hazard feels essential at this point in time. I went for the risky option of not starting with him last year, and that paid of nicely.... feeling the exact opposite this year.

Williams seems a shoe in for the first 2 GW's, Shaw and Baines could be points magnets... and that front 3. It gives me options to easily get Kane once he is back and also avoids that annoying 0.1 price rise that makes it super difficult to get either Ibra or Kun if they score in the first week. If Benteke does go to Palace, I'll take cut 1 from somewhere and get him in for Wilson.

Only real worry is Jaku as the backup keeper, but I usually wildcard pretty early so guess I can adress that then.

Im still unsure as to how attacking United will be under Mourinho, dont think doubling up is the best thing for your team, however it could be great! Martial as a mid should definately be utilised, and im a strong believer of Zlatan.

My only switch would be to downgrade Martial in order to either upgrade to Benteke or get Townsend instead of Bolasie, could then get Bojan for Snodgrass. Up to you though, strong team just very reliant on a team where the manager played for the 1-0/2-1s when he won it with Chelsea

If your planning on ever playing Jaku then it is an issue but Foster and WBA in general are a play all the time defence

You know I was looking at Bojan instead of Snodgrass... He was injured for a large amount of time last year right (Bojan I mean)?
I'm not really all that clued up on how nailed his minutes are going to be. Jonathan Walters was another I looked at (minutes is an issue) as was Feghouli (new to the league)
          Thanks for the feedback.

Im not sure, all i know is that Diouf was out (or was that the season before last??) for quite some time due to a family death, i assumed Bojan got full minutes? Maybe he was injured in that case. Walters' main appeal was that he was playing striker for a bit but he barely had the chance last season if at all.

Yeh agreed, it was between Everton and Chelsea defence for me, hopefully i chose the better one lol, time will tell! Just think youll get more value out of Baines and Shaw as Conte may be very reserved yet strong defensively
