The Fantasy Football Scout Rate My Team Surgery

Welcome to the first in our series of Rate My Team Surgeries. These articles will look at initial Fantasy Premier League squads and will be published ahead of Gameweek 1, with one of the FFScout moderator and contributor team putting forward their selection for scrutiny in order to start discussion.

The aim is to highlight some of the key concerns we have faced in constructing their squads, which hopefully will chime with other FPL managers’ issues.

In addition, we want the comment section to provide a useful opportunity for you to submit your own RMTs. Please also be helpful to those asking for advice. The key to successful rating of teams is to give advice as well.

I have drawn the first straw to start off this series with my fixture-led initial FPL squad.

My Team

Heaton (BUR) Foster (WBA)

Shaw (MUN) Walker (TOT) Friend (MID) Francis (BOU) Robertson (HUL)

Mkhitaryan (MUN) Ayew (SWA) Tadic (SOU) Townsend (CPL) Capoue (WAT)

Gray (BUR) Aguero (MCI) Ibrahimovic (MUN)

Team cost £100m

Key Issues

Fixtures
The fixture schedule has been my guide in the absence of any form at the start of the season. A strong set of early fixtures for West Brom (cpl, EVE, MID, bou, WHM, sto) makes a defender or keeper a must for me. Ben Foster gets the nod due to his 4.5m price tag.

Middlesbrough have a strong early run too (STO, sun, wba, CPL, eve) which makes George Friend a good bet. Nailed on and with impressive underlying statistics last season, which FPL’s Bonus Point System favours.

Manchester United are another with good early fixtures (bou, SOT, hul, MCI, wat) and I’ve gone to town on their players with three lining up in my initial squad. Luke Shaw looks good value at 5.5 after an injury-hit 2015/16. Zlatan Ibrahimovic would be tricky to draft in at 11.5 if I didn’t have him immediately, whilst Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s 9.5 price and early pre-season form have also guided my thinking.

Questions: Am I relying too much on fixtures? Is tripling up on Manchester United too much? Am I foolish for ignoring Chelsea’s excellent early fixtures?

Value
My goalkeeper combination is all about value. Two nailed on stoppers, with a great track record of saves, all for 9m. That looks too good to turn down. Also their fixtures dovetail nicely early on for rotation.

I’ve also gone for players I think will outperform their price tag. Kyle Walker at 5.5, when his team-mate Danny Rose is 6m, looks a steal. Attacking points and clean sheets should follow especially with a strong early start (eve, CPL, LIV, sto, SUN, mid).

Dusan Tadic and Andre Ayew also look well priced considering the attacking role they play for their teams.

I’ve also ensured I can afford the likes of Sergio Aguero by opting for budget bench players. Etienne Capoue (4.5) will rarely play for me, but I’m happy to call on him particularly as he appears to have license to bomb forward under Watford’s new manager, Walter Mazzarri – already in pre-season, he has scored twice.

Hull’s Andrew Robertson is nailed on, and due to poor fixtures is likely to be benched each week. He could do well, though, if called upon. Likewise, Simon Francis may not have good fixtures but is a player I’m happy to rely on when needed.

Questions: Have I selected the best 7.5 midfielders? Have I got the right 4.5 defenders in place? Are there any 4.0 defenders I should consider?

Flexibility
This is key for me and has meant I’ve gone for players that are not necessarily my preferred picks in each position, but allow me to downgrade if required.

For example Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino is a player I like, particularly for 8.5, instead of Mkhitaryan, but it is far easier for me to downgrade from the Manchester United midfielder to Firmino than vice versa. Ideally I’d have the more expensive Eden Hazard in my team for even greater flexibility, but I struggled to find the extra 0.5 needed.

Burnley’s Andre Gray is not ideal. He faces Swansea in Gameweek 1 but fixtures are mixed afterwards, with Chelsea and Leicester away over the first six. At 6.5, though, I can easily swap him to cheaper options or the wealth of forwards at the same price, most notably Saido Berahino should he move from West Brom. Opting for Jordan Rhodes (6.0) makes it tough to upgrade, for example, particularly with Alvaro Negredo now on board at Middlesbrough.

Questions: Am I being too sensible here? Should I just go for the best players that I can afford regardless of whether I can change them for emerging stars?

Captains
Finally I have invested heavily in ensuring I have two great options in Ibrahimovic and Aguero, who alternate perfectly home and away. Both can easily be downgraded as well for other expensive players, such as Chelsea’s strikers. Getting them in if they are not in my initial squad may require wildcarding.

Questions: Can I rely on just two players for the armband? Should I be looking for a third premium option from among Arsenal, or Chelsea’s ranks?

Mert a risk, Midfield and forwards look good but Gray probably wouldn't be my choice at that price range.

Watch out for Ozil he may get a rest at the beginning of the season.

      Solid effort though

My first attempt, not convinced with the defence currently.

    Foster, , 4.5
    Shaw, Stones, Friend, Evans, 4.5,
    Miki, Firmino, Townsend, Feghouli, Capoue,
    Aguero, Ibra, Long.

1.5 in the bank, probably use it too play around with the defence or the midfield.
Always been traditionally been a 343 type of guy, any suggestions?

Improve on Townsend and Feghouli with your remaining money.

I would also considering only picking one if Miki/Ibra because of your budget. Maybe replace Miki with Ali or Ibra with Kane/Lukaku.

      Defense seems solid.

(Thanks for rating my team earlier.)

    Afternoon lads.

I've been deliberating a few of these choices, there's something about this team I'm not 100% on. Usually I'm confident in my team before the season, I'm far from it right now. Little help please fellas.

    Courtois (Jakupovic)

Shaw / Van Dijk / Evans (Wimmer, Friend)

De Bruyne / Mkhitaryan / Willian / Ayew / Fletcher

    Aguero / Long (Wilson)

Used rotating keepers last year, didn't work out particularly well for me - seemed whoever I benched kept a clean sheet and visa versa. Keeping it simple with the 1 Premium this year.

Planning on WC after GW3, so Wimmer is a perfect cheap option as Vertonghen is currently injured so Wimmer WILL start the season at CB.

Also because I'm planning to WC so early, my team is built for the first 3 rounds of fixtures, 90% of my team have very good opening fixtures. I'll be evaluating the hidden gems and newly promoted teams players in the first 3 weeks, as there is players like Gray, Fischer, Negredo, who do peak my interests but I don't want to gamble just yet.

Sorry for the essay. What needs improving? Cheers boys.

Looks fine if your plan is an early WC. Shane Long is a bit of a risk because I've heard the new manager may play two up top, a formation that Long isn't as effective in. Just a thought

Forgot to mention; Long > Berahino IF he moves club. If Benteke moves club also I could potentially look to free up 1m for him. Wasn't overly convinced with either Saints forward but Gray has less than favourable fixtures, hm. Thanks pal.

    I've currently gone:
    Lloris / Foster
Stones / Van Djik / Cresswell / Shaw / Pieters

    Aguero / Ibra / Long

    Thoughts?

Midfield is kind of weak. Kante and Hojbjerg will bring you very little besides yellow cards IMO.

    Foster (Heaton)
Shaw - Pieters - Friend (Paredes - Robertson)
Mhki- Eriksen - Fabregas - Townsend (Capoue)
    Ibra - Aguero - Rondon

Thoughts? Defense is a bit cheap, wouldn't mind upgrading Robertson to Kyle Walker. Have .5 in the bank but not sure where to get the other .5. Also, Mhki or Martial? Cheers!

      Good. My comments;

Do you need a rotate for Foster, hes not a start every week GK, Jak could be a gamble (or a deal).

Personally prefer Erikson over Lamela due to set pieces but its the price difference. I'd be tepted to wait on Mk until settled into the EPL (I went for Ibra).

Think Townsend will be a good signing, I dont have space/funds for him though.

Vardy's price tag lost his appeal for me, I'm sure it'll be proved wrong.

      1. Däzzy
        • 8 Years

Foster rotates pretty well with jakupovic tbh.
Lamela on a few set pieces himself. Ended last season with 2 goals & 3 assists in his last 5 league games. Also 1.5 cheaper.
Not sure I'll go with miki yet
Vardy faces a depleted hul side away gw1 also had home games vs Swansea & bill on the horizon

Not keen on your defence. I'd look for wingbacks (Shaw, Creswell, PVA, Moreno etc who get forward more) and Baines over Jags perhaps (could be his return season).

Mid solid, although Silva and Barkley are a gamble based on last season's returns. I'd be tempted to upgrade Silva to KDB and downgrade Barkley (and the backline).

Lukaku trolls me so I just can't promote him in any side.

      1. George21
        • 9 Years
        7 years, 11 months ago

        Thanks for your advice...
Yeah, my defence will depend on how I line up everywhere else. I was trying to get baines in for Jags. I'm not too keen on PVA considering Allardyce is now the England coach and Moreno as Liverpool have a tough start and there are rotation issues. Cresswell I might consider, but CBs are good from set pieces and tend to get Bonus Points when there are clean sheets.

Silva is a gun. Absolutely killed it at the beginning of last season, but then slightly dropped of due to injury. Should be back good this season. Barkley will fire early under Koeman and Evertons really easy draw. Same for Lukaku.

    Hi guys.

Would appreciate some feedback on my current selections!

    GK: Valdes, Mandanda
DEF: Fuchs, Evans, Shaw, Walker, Friend
MID: Mkhitaryan, Albrighton, Townsend, Hojbjerg, Feghouli
    ATT: Aguero, Ibra, Costa

Feels a little top heavy at the moment, will probably go 4-3-3 first few weeks whilst we find out how often Hojbjerg and Feghouli will play.

I'd definitely like to keep Mkhitaryan in, but I'm a bit unsure on Albrighton and to some degree, Townsend.

    Any feedback appreciated,
    Thanks guys!

Currently on the below based on feedback from you guys

    Courtois (Jaku)

Baines Shaw (Mee&McAuley rotation) + Wilson Bench Fodder

    Hazard Mkhitaryan Gradel Eriksen (Capoue)

    Aguero Lukaku Long

Jury is still out on Eriksen, need to monitor pre season, other options are Alli\Siggy\Ayew\Barkley\Rambo
Worried about the lack of Arsenal but I guess you just never know which Arsenal will start the season and which will end it!

Prefer Cech over Courtois for that price.

Agree Erikson is an easy swap to another 8.5 (which is my thought) but you'll need to get on a bandwagon quick before a price rise. Siggy/Ayew & Rambo would be my thoughts. I have Tadic which is also another option for you.

Yeah, it was a toss up between Courtois and Cech, I guess I went for Courtois cos of his defensive minded manager and their superb early fixtures.

I meant I might swap Eriksen before GW1 to one of those players, will have to check pre season.

Cheers for the feedback, Tadic will be excellent I think, hes an option although I do have Long

Need some input on these questions:

Is Mandanda likely to be 1st choice at Palace?

    Same question for Foster...

And the neverending Long / Austin debate, I've opted for Long due to the new contract...

I'm also thinking about Enner Valencia as third striker to fund a heavy midfielder (Currently have Silva - Mkhitary - Bolasie - Bojan - Gradel)

    Any thoughts on Enner?

      Not sure on Mandanda
I have Foster, but rotating with Heaton.
Long over Austin (based on last season)
Valencia could be a good bench Fwd if you go 352.

        Thanks

Enner could be a bargain if he gets enough minutes, but my gut feeling says Carrol is 1st choice...

I also had Heaton / Foster but opted for Foster / Mandanda expecting Palace to be a much stronger side than Burnley

But if Mandanda is a risk I'll go back to Heaton.

Enner only appealing if he gets a move. We're desperately trying to sign a new striker at the moment. Bacca most likely hopefully and will be first choice 100%.

ok no valencia for me then...

If they get Bacca, West Ham is going to be a little monster this season

Okay, for a first draft how is this looking?

    Foster - Mandanda

    Koscielny - Shaw - Azpilicueta - Keane - Friend

Mkhitaryan - Cabaye - Tadic - De Bruyne - Fletcher

    Sturridge - Costa - Rhodes

    0.5 in the bank.

      Just my opinion:

points are usually made up front, so I would downgrade one of Kos or Azp so you can upgrade Cabaye...

    Foster- (Jaku)

    Shaw - Pieters/Evans - Friend/Francis

    Hazard - Eriksen - Siggy - Townsend - (Capoue)

    Aguero - Ibra - Gray

decent enough to start the season?
