Moving Target – Gaston Ramirez

Last week, Middlesbrough finally confirmed the transfer of midfielder Gaston Ramirez on a free transfer after being released by Southampton. The 25-year-old has signed a three-year contract at the Riverside, where he spent a successful loan spell last season.

Speaking to the club’s official website, ‘Boro manager Aitor Karanka expressed his delight at securing the Uruguayan on a permanent basis:

“It’s good to have him with us again. He was a key player last season and we both knew we wanted to work together again. It’s taken time, but it’s good to have him here. It’s good for the team, for the club, and for him. So we’re all pleased.”

The History

Starting off his youth career at Penarol in Uruguay, Ramirez made his professional debut for the club in 2009 at the age of 18. He went on to make 42 league appearances, scoring eight goals, before securing a move to Italian side Bologna in August 2010 for a fee of € 2.5 million.

Ramirez enjoyed a reasonably successful first campaign in Italy, bagging four goals and two assists in 25 league matches, before really finding his feet during the 2011/12 campaign, where he netted eight times and provided five assists in 33 league appearances.

Those performances persuaded Southampton to pay a reported £12 million for his services in August 2012, but he struggled for consistency during his first season in England, despite scoring five goals and bagging three assists in 26 league appearances.

The midfielder spent much of the 2013/14 season on the fringes of the Southampton side under Mauricio Pochettino, before moving to Hull City on a season-long loan in September 2014. He once again struggled to establish himself as a regular starter, though, totalling 23 league appearances for the Tigers, scoring just one Premier League goal.

In January, Ramirez moved to Middlesbrough on loan for the remainder of the 2015/16 campaign, and proved to be a pivotal figure as ‘Boro secured promotion back to the Premier League, scoring seven goals and registering four assists in 18 league matches.

Having played 13 times for Uruguay Under 20s, scoring three goals, Ramirez made his senior debut against Indonesia in October 2010. He also represented his country in the London 2012 football tournament and the 2014 World Cup, and currently has 38 caps to his name, although he has yet to score for his country.

The Prospects

During his loan spell with ‘Boro last season, Ramirez primarily featured in the number ten role in Karanka’s favoured 4-2-3-1 formation. While the Spanish boss is known to rotate his attacking options, fellow new signing Viktor Fischer appears likely to occupy one of the wide berths, with the likes of Albert Adomah, Stewart Downing and Cristhian Stuani battling for the other wide position.

Ramirez did only come on as a substitute in three of his 18 league outings for ‘Boro last season, though, suggesting he could be the attacking midfielder least prone to rotation.

Looking at last season’s underlying statistics, Ramirez averaged a shot every 32.4 minutes, better than Stuani (36.6), Adomah (39.9) and Downing (48.2), although Fischer did manage a shot every 29 minutes playing for Ajax. Assessing the creativity of the players last season, Ramirez once again led the way, averaging a key pass every 33.2 minutes, better than Downing (48.2), Adomah (50.2) and Stuani (124.6), while Fischer only created a chance every 62.7 minutes playing in the Eredivisie.

With Fischer, Downing and Adomah all valued at 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), it’s likely Ramirez will be priced the same or 6.0 at a push. Certainly, with such favourable opening fixtures (STO, sun, wba, CPL), Ramirez, like many of ‘Boro’s Fantasy assets, look worthy of consideration as budget options for our initial 15-man squads.

The fact that Karanka’s men only scored 63 goals in the Championship last term, ranking them eighth in the division, may bring a sense of caution in backing ‘Boro attackers from the off, though. Nonetheless, their attack has been boosted by the arrival of former Man City striker Alberto Negredo, who netted a debut goal for the Teeside team at the weekend after an effort from Ramirez cannoned back off the post.

Priced at 6.5, Negredo’s instant impact has propelled him onto many radars as a cheap third striker option, though if Ramirez comes in at 5.5, he looks a decent budget midfield option for the opening weeks of the season. Given that he’s familiar with both the Premier League and Karanka’s tactical system, the South American will be looking to finally prove himself after those disappointing spells in the top-flight at Southampton and Hull.

    5.5 would be VERY nice.

We looked so much better with him in the side. A rejuvenated player, I think he needed some confidence and playing in the C'Ship last season gave him that.

Posted this earlier, but I'm just trying to get more opinions on this unusual fantasy league formation, which could work in the earlier stages. Then, I'll play my wildcard to buy a cheap striker who is in form. Many strikers are now playing in a 4-4-2, meaning less goals for each player.

    Mandanda (Jakupovic)
Stones - Terry - Shaw - Friend (Smith)
    Hazard - Mahrez - Mkhitaryan - Firmino - Ayew
    Aguero (Grabban - Campbell)

Nice logic there, based on nothing at all.

Starting to think that Tadic may be the best option at 7.5M. Full preseason and summer rest. Playing centrally (?). Although i am tempted by Barkley. Think Koeman might get the most out of him

Any reason why most seem to prefer Mahrez to Vardy as Leicester cover? Am on Vardy atm because of pens, and that I prefer the Mahrez alternatives to the Vardy ones (although the fact that Mahrez/Costa is 1.0 cheaper than Haz/Vardy is persuasive).

That's right. Redmond I have my doubts about initially, because there are slight concerns about his nailed-on-ness. Townsend has some lovely fixtures and has been playing up front in the friendlies so has found his spot in my team.

Going with Ibra plainly because it's always easier to downgrade than upgrade.

Quite the opposite here, he saved my season with that GW8 captaincy. I'm not counting on Leicester players because of possible departures but I'd do Mahrez over Vardy personally.

With Kante gone, they may well have to score a few more to win (If that makes sense).
Agree though, player retention will be key. Mahrez especially.

I get so tired every time I see some poor sod asking for a RMT without having Kun in the team getting smart arse answers like 'No Kun, start again'.

How many of those ppl answering like this have actually red through the whole team and thought about what is there due to money saved on Kun?

For example, getting Lukaku instead of Kun saves 4m.
Those 4m can do a lot of good in several areas of your team.
    For example.
Instead of Morgan you could have Fuchs, 0.5m spent.
Instead of Stones you could have Baines/Coleman, 0.5m spent.
Instead of Evans you could have Brunt, 0.5m spent.
    Etc etc
Instead of a 5.5 mid you could have Ayew/Tadic, 2m spent.
Instead of Firm/Erik you could have Miki/Haz 1-1.5m spent
    Etc etc.
Instead of a 6.5 forward you could have Tekkers(if at Palace), 1m spent.

So for example Kun to Lukaku, gets you....
    Stones to Baines/Coleman.
    Evans to Brunt.
5.5 mid(not all will be Mahrez) to Ayew/Tadic.
    Wilson to Tekkers

So the real question is would these moves outscore the possible loss Lukaku instead of Kun means. Truth to be told Lukaku might not be that far behind Kun. Plus since Kun gets inured a lot there is always a chance it happens in a game before he goes nuts.
Captaincy is not a real problem either it's just a lack of fantasy to say so.

So the next time you see a Kun-less team at least try to figure out where the money has gone and what this poor sod has to gain i other places in his team.

You had me until you mentioned captaincy. And that's why he matters. Every year kun will score around 20 points at least twice. And most will captain during that time. And it is very, very hard to come back from. Nobody will be in the top 10k without him. That's just a fact.

Your spreading of the cash has too many variables attached. Plus injury isn't a problem as you can sub him out for anyone in the game when it happens.

Don't think I'm trying to win you over. I'm trying to get ppl to answer those that have opted for a team without Kun in a more serious way.

Injury can be a problem as I stated there is no way of knowing when the injury will occur, 10 minutes in to a game would mean a game lost.

If Kun scores 20+ 2 times a season, with the fixture proof player he is you will need to C him almost every time to find those 2 20+ games for sure.

Getting in to the top 10k without Kun is nowhere near impossible. That is just plain wrong to say.

The main issue I take with this is that the value options in a team are there to enable 3-5 of the very best point potential options (who may be poor value).

Yes, downgrading Kun can achieve a lot of "upgrades", and like you say they may close the points gap between Kun and Lukaku, but usually I don't think they would. The defensive upgrades only really apply if you keep them the whole season, which is unlikely and many cheaper defenders do better. The other upgrades are also very meh

This 'the whole season' is a fair point. I see that as an issue myself. But then again, so many seem to be going for a wc between gw 3 and 4. That would mean no wc(and thus not many defensive changes) until dgw's hit(when we will use the 2nd wc).

Nah, Kun is the best captain option in the game. If you don't have him, you need to start again, regardless of what you have done with the 4mil. Build value around Kun. Not in place of.

Benteke to Palace would be great.

Pogba I would stay well clear of, he'll no doubt be in the region of £10.5m - 11m, and he won't offer much in attacking returns, compared to Hazard/Sanchez, but I'm sure he will be in so many teams.

I hope Arsenal can bring in a top striker, as I want Ozil in my team.

No point in having a 'consensus team' at this stage, it's the perfect time for gambling with so many different teams floating around, could really steal a march on the mini leagues.

Also, due to the influx of better managers in the league, there will be more clean sheets.

    Mandanda (Foster)
Stones - Terry - Shaw - Van Dijk (Taylor)
    Hazard - Mahrez - Firmino - Tadic - Ayew
    Aguero (Grabban - Campbell)

I don't actually like the defence but I don't have a problem with the formation in theory. Trouble is flexibility. One of those 6.5m strikers will hit the ground running we just don't know which and you could be left behind if you can't then get them in. I always think that if you are going to go for an unusual team or line up week one you HAVE to commit to it for two full weeks with no transfers. At least then you have the flexibility to change it.
