Moving Target – Gaston Ramirez

Last week, Middlesbrough finally confirmed the transfer of midfielder Gaston Ramirez on a free transfer after being released by Southampton. The 25-year-old has signed a three-year contract at the Riverside, where he spent a successful loan spell last season.

Speaking to the club’s official website, ‘Boro manager Aitor Karanka expressed his delight at securing the Uruguayan on a permanent basis:

“It’s good to have him with us again. He was a key player last season and we both knew we wanted to work together again. It’s taken time, but it’s good to have him here. It’s good for the team, for the club, and for him. So we’re all pleased.”

The History

Starting off his youth career at Penarol in Uruguay, Ramirez made his professional debut for the club in 2009 at the age of 18. He went on to make 42 league appearances, scoring eight goals, before securing a move to Italian side Bologna in August 2010 for a fee of € 2.5 million.

Ramirez enjoyed a reasonably successful first campaign in Italy, bagging four goals and two assists in 25 league matches, before really finding his feet during the 2011/12 campaign, where he netted eight times and provided five assists in 33 league appearances.

Those performances persuaded Southampton to pay a reported £12 million for his services in August 2012, but he struggled for consistency during his first season in England, despite scoring five goals and bagging three assists in 26 league appearances.

The midfielder spent much of the 2013/14 season on the fringes of the Southampton side under Mauricio Pochettino, before moving to Hull City on a season-long loan in September 2014. He once again struggled to establish himself as a regular starter, though, totalling 23 league appearances for the Tigers, scoring just one Premier League goal.

In January, Ramirez moved to Middlesbrough on loan for the remainder of the 2015/16 campaign, and proved to be a pivotal figure as ‘Boro secured promotion back to the Premier League, scoring seven goals and registering four assists in 18 league matches.

Having played 13 times for Uruguay Under 20s, scoring three goals, Ramirez made his senior debut against Indonesia in October 2010. He also represented his country in the London 2012 football tournament and the 2014 World Cup, and currently has 38 caps to his name, although he has yet to score for his country.

The Prospects

During his loan spell with ‘Boro last season, Ramirez primarily featured in the number ten role in Karanka’s favoured 4-2-3-1 formation. While the Spanish boss is known to rotate his attacking options, fellow new signing Viktor Fischer appears likely to occupy one of the wide berths, with the likes of Albert Adomah, Stewart Downing and Cristhian Stuani battling for the other wide position.

Ramirez did only come on as a substitute in three of his 18 league outings for ‘Boro last season, though, suggesting he could be the attacking midfielder least prone to rotation.

Looking at last season’s underlying statistics, Ramirez averaged a shot every 32.4 minutes, better than Stuani (36.6), Adomah (39.9) and Downing (48.2), although Fischer did manage a shot every 29 minutes playing for Ajax. Assessing the creativity of the players last season, Ramirez once again led the way, averaging a key pass every 33.2 minutes, better than Downing (48.2), Adomah (50.2) and Stuani (124.6), while Fischer only created a chance every 62.7 minutes playing in the Eredivisie.

With Fischer, Downing and Adomah all valued at 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), it’s likely Ramirez will be priced the same or 6.0 at a push. Certainly, with such favourable opening fixtures (STO, sun, wba, CPL), Ramirez, like many of ‘Boro’s Fantasy assets, look worthy of consideration as budget options for our initial 15-man squads.

The fact that Karanka’s men only scored 63 goals in the Championship last term, ranking them eighth in the division, may bring a sense of caution in backing ‘Boro attackers from the off, though. Nonetheless, their attack has been boosted by the arrival of former Man City striker Alberto Negredo, who netted a debut goal for the Teeside team at the weekend after an effort from Ramirez cannoned back off the post.

Priced at 6.5, Negredo’s instant impact has propelled him onto many radars as a cheap third striker option, though if Ramirez comes in at 5.5, he looks a decent budget midfield option for the opening weeks of the season. Given that he’s familiar with both the Premier League and Karanka’s tactical system, the South American will be looking to finally prove himself after those disappointing spells in the top-flight at Southampton and Hull.

deulofeu at everton isnt super cheap at 6.5 but if you need a mid range/cheapish mid, del will score goals, he will def set them up, plays as a striker as well as rm and always has so much energy to start the season... only negatives... he crashes out around christmas, hopefully that changes with koeman and an emphasis on fitness. other negative... lukakus future is still up in the air... if he goes del may not be as dangerous... as his strength and positioning really layed the platform for del last season. hope that helped

Henderson is possibly moving for 25 mill

Widj - Cout - Firm - Mane mid with Sturridge up top is the current rumour

Dunno. A few clubs interested in him for 25. Spurs were.

Strong rumours we're trying hard for Dahoud. Klopp's idea is like this (apparently):

          Karius

          Clyne Matip Lovren Hector

          Can Dahoud

          Mane Firmino Coutinho

          Sturridge

I quite like this not seeing a lot of teams with silva could be a nice diff..don't think funis Mori is a great pick Everton don't keep a lot of clean sheets baines an Coleman are picked for their attacking threats

    2. Däzzy
      • 8 Years

      Looks decent
Foster probably a better shout to save .5 million ecspecially with Foster having tough away games.
Funes mori probably won't play unless Shaw leaves. Downgrade him to a 4.5 defender and work from there
Try and upgrade one of your midfielders (Silva for me) to a more expensive midfielder to give you more flexibility making easier to get in expensive midfielders that start well

      1. Blakefaa
        • 8 Years

as an everton supporter, i really believe funes mori will be the most regular starting cb for us... jags is always getting injured, hes getting pretty bloody old lol, stonesy unfortunately is off to city... we have a few under 21s and are yet to sign stonesys replacement.. so as it stands, i think he will be a decent buy.. scored some wicked headers from corners last season as well...

DiMaria did start the season with some double digit hauls in the first 5 weeks, he got injured then and never really returned as an fpl option after that. But it's just different with every player. I think Mhki is a great option. Last season with Payet I was also going to 'wait and see' how he does and bring him in later, cost me some points though

Question is - are we just renembering the points we lost waiting and seeing. The ones we waited and saw flop, we rarely remember.

In contrast, there was Ayew and Payet. Before that Fabregas. Every player is a different scenario.

True! It is a gamble and it hard to know which horse to bet on. Is there a way to find out, who will settle well in PL?

Honestly it is all just up to luck, as much of fantasy is. Personally, I put players that I think have the class to do well. Sometimes there are flops, but if I see them perform well (against reasonable opposition), I'll consider them. Mhki and KdB both lit it up in the Bundesliga. If I believe correctly, Payet created the most chances in Europe before coming to England. I don't believe the Premier League physicality stuff. Overall, it all comes down to luck, but there are some things that point to gems. I get it all wrong though in the end.

Not buying the all the Byram talk.

Hes a rb through and through and even then lost his place in the team to Antonio last season who is a winger shoe-horned into a rb and has questionable defending skills.

We have a couple of young guns who would be better than byram or expect us to sign up another lb as cover.

Thought about it but Guardiola scares me... I could actually see him ending up playing CB again as he often did with Barcelona (He's a much better CB than Mangala for sure).

Morning! Anyone able to give me some opinions on this?

    Schmiechal (Jakupovic)
Coleman - Walker - Taylor - Friend - Wilson (2 big hitters and 3 way rotation)
Martial - Ozil - Fabregas - Fischer (8 goals, 3 assists in 19 apps at ajax last term) - Fletcher
Ibra - Aguero - Wickham (Palace's only striker option now)

    Cheers!

Really don't like your middfield tbh

Ozil still a doubt to start
Not sure where I will see Fabregas fitting in, in the 4-2-4 formation
Fischer hmm, rather Redmond if he can nail a spot in the starting XI

Why don't you think Ozil will start, just lack of rest?
Fabregas is surely the best 7.5 option tho?
And yes I agree, Fischer is a bit of a punt and will probs change haha

Have already tried to sign Benteke and they are trying to sign Berahino . They will definitely sign someone imo and Wickham only seems to do well if his team is in a relegation scrap .

Care to rate my team?Tried not to take too many risks

    Foster - Heaton
    Shaw - Fuchs - Souare - Pieters - 4.0
    Hazard - Eriksen - Tadic - Townsend - Højbjerg
    Aguero - Sturridge - Deeney

    Thoughts?

      Nice punt on Studge!
Would go Naylor + Wilson at the back instead of Pieter and another 4.0. The rest looks good, although I think there are better options than Deeney

are you confident that wilson will play? I am not too sure. And pieters playing lwb in a 3-5-2 seems too good for the 4.5M tag

    Valdes (STO)
Shaw (bou) Baines (TOT) Friend (STO)
Hazard (WHM) Eriksen (eve) Townsend (WBA) Snoddy (LEI)
Aguero (SUN) Ibra (bou) Rondon (cpl)

What are your thoughts on Giroud as a prospect? His form was really kicking off at the end of the season, and he had a good Euro.

Could he be an alternative to Zlatan?

Arsenal's main striker who probably won't play first game unless Wenger decides he's fit and ready. At the moment I expect sub appearance from him but there's still almost 3 weeks before the start of the season so we'll see. After that he's an interesting option. Lots of chances will be created for him. Let's hope he can score 20+ goals in the league this season.
